#1 side Melville -v- the Vets O/50s side at home  21/08/2010  (By Macca)

#2 side last week and the prospect of going head to head with the top team was another test of our development as an evolving side (although we will be a year older next year). Missing our goalie Steve Airey & with Bobby Figredo and Brian Coppendale still injured, we were bolstered by Adam (Duff) Duffy, Len Davies, a cameo by Barry Vanderputt & grateful assistance from Diana the Women’s 2’s goalie.

We went out hard and took it right up to Melville. Baz looked right at home at full-back, working well with Macca. The halves and forwards combined with a disciplined short game that sent a clear message to Melville we were here to play. We had a number of positive moves into the forward line early but didn’t capitalise on our chances. Darrin and Duff were vocal and mobile, providing several options; John Ellis chased down everything and fed some good ball to team mates & Hammond D’Souza showed the benefit & creativity of an ‘old head’ up front. Despite good work several turnovers switched the pressure back on us and two goals resulted. We maintained our drive and discipline to halt the flow and went into the break 0-2.

Our captain Lloyd extolled the need to maintain our composure and game plan and not succumb to our second half “fade”. We kicked off & Melville tried several different combinations but to our credit, our backs worked tirelessly to disrupt a number of their forward advances. Dave (Frosty) Frost took over from Baz & took it up to their forwards, ably assisted by Jeff Anderson and Phil Hewton who exercised pressure on the strong Melville defence which had conceded only 6 goals this season!.   Whilst Macca swooped and frustrated many Melville threats Len Davies stone walled all challengers with Lloyd being the architect of several promising forward attacks.

Once again Phil Hewton worked tirelessly and on many occasions dispossessed and intercepted many attacking moves by Melville. Shaun Keating and Damon Britain provided great support in the forward line.  Diana was steadfast under heavy barrage and repelled several strong shots, earning high praise from the Melville forwards.

We succumbed to one more goal and finished 0-3, proud of what we had achieved and with credit received from our opponents.

Best Players:Phil Hewton; Barry Vanderputt; Dave Frost and John Ellis

Thanks: To Paula Westell who umpired for us; Diana again for keeping goal admirably; Duff, Len and Baz for their assistance & strong contribution on the day and our ladies cheer squad who ‘kept it real’ for us!

We go to our last game against Blades hopefully realising a winning finale to what turned out to be a tough season!!

Cheers

Macca

HAWK’S v NEWMAN KNIGHTS

 21/8/2010

By Barry Romaro

With thanks to Andy Smyth for providing the match report via mobile phone

Today we travelled to Newman College to play the against the Newman Knights with the threat of rain showers. We welcomed back Trenty from his overseas jaunt and Heathy from his midyear retirement to help make up the eleven players needed. Newman has been in second place for the entire season and they are the only team to score two goals against us on two occasions so we knew this would be a very hard game. Heathy lined up in his past position of left inner and by all reports John Gradisen braved the pain of his rolled ankle and lined up at left wing. We played into the hands of the Newman defence all day by playing behind them and trying to hit the ball through them. The Newman defensive line trapped nearly everything our forward line could throw at them. Colin could still not score that elusive first goal as he comically fell over himself whilst taking the ball into the top of the circle for an open shot, maybe next week Colin. We did not capitalise on our chances today but we were very strong in defence and did not concede a goal but we managed one for ourselves.

So we stay unbeaten with one game to go in the regular season with Harlies as our opponent next week and Barry will be back from suspension and rearing to go.

Thanks to Newman for suppling two umpires so that we could fill a full side that is sportsmanship through and through! Thanks again Andy for ringing through this report

Now we look forward to next week as our last game for the regular season and a home game with music and the great alfresco atmosphere.

7th August  vs. Kwinana

Result 0-5

Away to Wasps this week and needing a win to secure a finals berth. Unfortunately we were down a few players with Ian and Kurtis sick and Andy with work commitments. After some frantic calls we were lucky enough to have Luke Frost come down and play so we at least had some bench coverage – thanks Luke!!  There was quite a bit of rain before the start (a rare occurrence this year) but it cleared with about 5 minutes before the start. Unfortunately the first half can only be described as diabolical. Elementary mistakes were made, players were not being marked well and the tackling and pressure that we need to control any game was sadly lacking. To cut a sad story short we were 4-0 down at half time having played the worst half of hockey for the year. At the half time break there was a fair bit of soul searching and a resolve to win the second half.   The second half was a huge improvement on the first. A bit of the Hawks spirit was evident and the back-tackling and run to create and chase returned. Wasps proved to be difficult to penetrate their defence but we created some opportunities and made them work a lot harder for possession. A couple of Wasps players were new from the first time we played them and this injection of skill from their higher grades made our task very difficult. We conceded only one more goal and were far more competitive across the ground. Rusty continued a rich vein of form with another good game up forward and Tyson showed some patches of very good determined play in the second half. We were outplayed on the day but live to fight another day next week, with finals still possible with a win against Pirates. Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us.            Best players             Rusty Snook, Dave Gibb, Owen De Snoo.

THE GAMES

Last weekend I was lucky to be asked to fill in for Heathy and coach the under 15’s. It was a 9:30 game on a Sunday morning. I did a bit of research and found out we we’re playing the undefeated, top team. We started the game with 10 players, but over the next 70 minutes was a great display of fighting Southern River spirit. We not only kept pace with them but took the game up to Hale and looked evey bit the A reseve team we nominated, a fantastic performance from Zack in goals and Jess and Jacob in defense was as solid as a rock. Toby was shuffled into right half to cover for Lucas for his first run at Half back along with Brian and Luke, Kept Hale under constant pressure in the midfield. Fabian and Aiden ran tirelessly through inside forward and Mitch and Keelie worked exceptionally hard up front playing 1 short. Thanks must go out to Chelsey and Zach D’Souza for racing down from the other under 15 game to fill in, and also thanks to Frosty for umpiring. A great game we unfortunately lost 4-1, but I would like to thank the kids for letting me coach them,

Leighton Keane.

HAWK’S v VICTORIA PARK
14/8/2010
By Barry Romaro

Today we travelled over to Fletcher Park to play Victoria Park and the weather was very kind to us after a very wet training session on Thursday night. Victoria Park started the game two players short but they rallied hard and we were unable to make any inroads on the score board until they had ten players on the park. The game was far to easy for us as the opposition could not be bothered marking our forwards and we should of finished the first half with eight or more goals but half time saw us four to nil up. Once again we had gone a whole half of hockey bypassing our midfield and using the long ball far to often, resulting in less shots on goal. The second half saw us dominate even more with seven goals being shared by all the forwards. Thank you once again to the mums and dads and wives who came down to support us and James and Micky for answering our s.o.s. for players. Once again thank you to John Heath who umpired us very well, pity I can’t say the same for the other guy. The final score was eleven to nil and next week we will be almost back to full strength with only Barry missing for the top of the table clash against Newman College.

7th August vs. Kwinana
Result 1-3
We were back at home this week and had a challenge against the top team with a few players missing. Troy, Andy and Peter were all missing this week so we had just the 1 reserve. Kwinana brought their full team complete with 4 on the bench so a lot of running was going to be required. Rusty slotted into centre forward with Chad a right half, Kyle left half and Owen up to right inner.
The game started at a quick pace with ball moving pretty quickly between the lines. We applied some good pressure with Rusty looking dangerous up front and some good combinations happening. After
about 15 minutes Kwinana got a cross in across goals which we failed to trap. Inexplicably the umpire called a short for a foot even though everyone’s feet were well clear. Somehow we managed to keep our cool and prepared to defend the short. Unfortunately, I think we were still cursing our misfortune as they got a shot away at the post and a mis-trap saw the ball dribble over.
The real Hawks spirit came to the fore and we hit back hard from the restart. Some neat build up play saw Rusty take the ball into the circle and put away a great goal that Jamie Dwyer would have been proud of. The game continued at high intensity and we defended a couple more corners to keep the score all square at 1-1 at half time.
At half time we knew we had a hard half of hockey in front of us but thought we had played strongly and were in a with a big chance.
An arm wrestle took place after half time and with 15 minutes to go the scores were still level. We had defended well especially on the short corners of which they had at least 10 in the second half as they were getting much more of the ball in the midfield. Brandon made some excellent saves to keep us in the match on the shorts also. We made some forays forward and created some chances but couldn’t convert. Chad was struggling with the flu and Kurtis was off with a sore back so we were starting to feel the pinch.
On a fast break we found ourselves out numbered and a hard hit into the circle got the finest of edges (that snicko would have had trouble detecting) off a Kwinana forward’s stick. 2-1 down we pressed hard for the equalizer and generated some opportunities but their defense held up strongly. Not far from the end off another short corner they managed to get one past us to make it 3-1.
All up a really good effort this week against a tough team and we ran out of legs in the end but kept the pressure on throughout the game. Next week we play WASP’s which is now critical for us to play finals.
Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us.

7th August vs. Vic Park

Result 6-0

We welcomed back Gibbo and Eggy this week to take on the bottom side at their home ground. With 15 players available we were looking for a good win and a boost to our goal difference – which could prove to be vital in what is a very close competition. With finals looming (hopefully) we tried some positional changes to work out our best combination for finals hockey. Troy joined Gibbo at fullback, Kyle started left half and Cam at centre forward.

We started the game quite well and controlled the play fairly easily. Ball movement was good and skills quite high as we enjoyed the flat surface of Fletcher Park. An early goal to Kurtis was reward for effort after some concerted field play. Vic Park made occasional forays forward which were quickly repelled and Brandon had very little work to do in goals. We continued to generate plenty of chances with Rusty strong at right inner teaming well with Kurtis and Cam. Eggy was running hard at left inner also and creating plenty of drive down the left with Andy. Soon enough some goals resulted from field play to Eggy and Rusty. We had a few short corners but were unable to put them away so we went into the break 3-0 up.

At half time we knew we had dominated and could have had a few more on the board. For the 2nd half we tried some more changes with Owen having a run at centre half and Clive at centre forward trying to snag a very rare goal.

The first 15 minutes saw many chances being generated but the next goal couldn’t be found. We had a few shorts and one found the net through a drag flick from Troy but it was disallowed due to some over exuberance by way of a raised stick from Clive near the keeper as the ball sailed by into the net. Heaps more pressure kept coming and eventually Eggy broke the drought for the half with a nicely slotted goal. Peter then showed some of the finishing ability we know he has we two neatly slotted goals from the right to make the total up to 6. –

All up a good effort this week but some big games against teams vying for our finals spot are coming up in the next 3 weeks and we need to make sure we play our best in those games to make sure we get through to September. Big game next week against Kwinana at home at 2pm. We need to avenge our defeat in the Challenge cup against these guys.

Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us.

Southern River vs Riverside Lions
Veterans 40’s
7/8/2010
By Barry Romaro
We had not much idea of what to expect today, as the last time we played this side they loaded their side with division one players. We new we were going to be short of players due to injuries so went looking for players around the club and ended up getting Phil Parkes and Neil Worland. The first half was just a game of turn overs and not a pretty sight for our spectators. We got of to a shaky start and did not get much better as the game progressed. We went into the half time break with no goals for the first time this season but enjoyed a break from the sun. The second half saw us dominate especially as Riverside started to get tired. We managed to slot two goals in through good field play but today was not our best game. Our only real fault for the day was we started to bypass our midfield on too many occasions but we improved a little bit in the second half second half. Today’s result ensured that we will finish on top of the table at years end and now have the double chance in the finals. The final score was two – nil. Thankyou to Ravi Singh for umpiring our game and also the great support from the spectators.

DAY OF DESTRUCTION

MATCH REPORT METRO 4

Southern River def Dale

7 - Zip!

As we continue to MOVE FORWARD in the second half of the season the boys decided a bit of home ground pre quiz night back board banging was on the cards. The team lined up with a standard set up and after noticing that Dale’s goalie had shrunk to half his previous size we got on with the task at hand of making a run for top four.

There isn’t much you can say about team that has a statistical goal difference that at the time we played them matched a favourite a position in the horizontal tango department. It was going to be a victory from the moment we started but the question was by how much. Dale left their centre field clear for us and the defense was not of the same standard when we met last time and unfortunately with the pint size goalie we were in like Flynn.

Our half back line plugged ball after ball into the circle and via the wings and the forwards had a blast. We were missing the Chief’s power hits but After a massive four weeks of playing hockey Steel put two away. Just to prove he was back from injury for the season (boardshorts and all) Azza banged in a couple and Phil thought he better prove that old blokes can do it without a blue pill. Dylan not to be outdone gave the Tomahawks a single to finish the job.

The atmosphere from the home crowd was a real lift and getting in a win in front of the club’s leaders against the boys from Dale was a treat. Best on ground and sentimental favourite Steel!

THE SMELL OF FINALS

MATCH REPORT METRO 4

Southern River draw Whitfords

2 - 2

Just in case I haven’t said it before it’s time to MOVE FORWARD as we try and find a spot in the top four. There is nothing like the tease of mathematical possibility. A victory in this match and an expected Subs loss to Fremantle and we would be within two points of September action.

The team fired up and ran on as the Captain and Centre Forward were MIA. The Centre Forward has still not been found….Azza where are youooooooooooooooooooo? The Captain on the other hand had been hoodwinked by the Women’s 4’s into umpiring at Canning on the promise that he would be back in time for the start of the game. Apparently the space time continuum could not be manipulated and is not possible to get from Ferndale to Southern River in less than 9 minutes.

Phil led the boys on and with Bitters up in the Centre Forward slot we were on the score board within 5 minutes. Now this is the number 2 team in the competition so there was no way they were going to let us get away with it and they pushed hard to get back in to the game. Whitfords are a team made up of a core of 5 very skillful players who when they combine are lethal. The good thing about teams that are made up on individuals though is that they can’t beat a team who plays like a team.

Both teams succumbed to the men with the whistles. Let’s just say we have had this pair twice this season and although they play a higher grade than us they still appear not to have reviewed the rule book in the last 4 years. The decision making lead to a number of short corners against us and when the Whitfords Centre Forward released a drag flick from outside the circle and the back board reverberated…well let’s say the atmosphere failed to improve from there. Phil ate the cheese after some Back to a nil all situation, we were headed into the half time break early as apparently 30 minutes is the new 35!

Into the second half we had the bench rotating nicely. Ravi instructed me to lock onto the short aXX curly top and keep him out of the game. Well he said something like that and he was right. We dominated the first 15 minutes of the second half and “White Hot” Steel with his sweet new hair cut found himself on the score board for the second week in a row. At that point Whitfords could see they had some problems and they fired up. Wave after wave and decision after decision leading to free after free and corner after corner against us and Whitfords should have been up by ten goals.

One of my favourite short corners of the day was Paul De Luca hitting Chief in the foot with his stick and despite the ball being a metre away, Chief being called for kicking the ball. My most favourite was this one though… The ball pops up in the air from outside the circle on one of those 50/50 calls. It lands in the circle with no one within hitting distance. The ump calls a short. The irony is that is the last WAHA bulletin that exact situation is one of the umpiring questions….the answer as we all informed the umpire was of course…..play on!!

Anyway in the last ten minutes Whitfords finally drive one in on Bono who again did an excellent job this week heard it but didn’t see it sail through his legs. And well that should have been the game, however the umpires decided that we deserved to play on and the half went for 39 minutes in the end.

A really good team effort by the boys and with Subs drawing Fremantle we are still a sniff away from the top four. Paging Azza, paging Azza…..

QUIZ NITE

What a fantastic Quiz Nite we had last Saturday. For all those that attended, and there was nearly 200, Im sure that no one could say they came away bored. Thanks goes out to many people but of course Kristine and Paul Dixey …… TAKE A BOW. The countless hours of preparation by both Kris and Paul certainly ensured the night was successful. Initial reports indicate that the Hawks made close to $5000. Thanks to all club members who embraced the concept with the donation of many prizes and of course the team efforts of all sides in supplying their nominated “baskets”. Quizmaster, Ken (don’t know his surname) was strict and yet created a fun atmosphere. I will leave Kris to write a report on the night but a huge well done to all who assisted and, of course, you the Hawks member who came along and invited family and friends and made the night so successful.

Many bidders in the silent auction came away happy. Probably none so more than club newcomer, Martin Hickey. Pictured here with his “Ben Cousins” portrait.

To the Southern River Hockey Club

WOW…where do I start…..?

Well the ladies grass team had a home game on field 2 starting at 2pm on Saturday 31st July.  We were looking pretty good until midway in the second half when I went for a ball and dislocated my ankle and went down in a heap of pain.  I couldn’t comprehend what had just happened but then the team stepped in…..

From what I have been told happened - and I apologise if things are a bit mixed up or missing - everyone around me went into help mode.  An ambulance was called for a start as I couldnt move at all and the amount of pain I was in was worse than giving birth to my 2 kids…..

For most of the time I was out to all that was going on around me but I needed to make sure that everyone in the club understands that my husband Geoff, my 2 kids, Rikaya and Brodee and my family are forever grateful for what the club did on our behalf.

To the girls in the team, especially Megan and Lou whose voices I did not stop hearing, your support of waiting for me to be attended to - THANKYOU.  I know it was tough to watch me in the amount of pain I was in as I have spoken to a coupe of you since.  To Dave, Tilly and Donna D’Souza who attended to Brodee and to Gill and Evelyn who attended to Rikaya so as they understood what was happening - THANKYOU.  My kids were 2 people who I was worrying about as Geoff had left the ground at the time.

To Nicole Frost for the use of the phone - although I tried calling myself instead of my hubby - THANKYOU.  To everyone who went and got jackets and blankets for my shock - THANKYOU.

To the other people involved from other clubs - I believe there was a paramedic from the vets team who came over and the Dellas ladies who didnt leave the ground until after I did - THANKYOU.

To Brian for waiting on the road for the ambulance - which I believe came from Mundijong and took forever - THANKYOU.  To Janson who waited by the gates to let the ambulance through - THANKYOU.  To the boys on field 1 for stopping their game to allow all of this to take place - THANKYOU.  To the vets game after ours who moved to another field - THANKYOU.

As I sit here typing this up for all of the club to see - we as a family as forever grateful and are so proud to be a part of the SOUTHERN RIVER HAWKS Hockey Club and family.  I now know that whenever there is a person in need through injury no matter what is happening at the club everyone bonds together and it should make each and every member proud to be part of such a great club, family and home.

I have no doubt that I have forgotten to thank someone individually but if I have just be assured it is because I was pretty out to it or we havent been informed of what you did.  Also know within your heart that we are grateful as we know that this would not have happened at any other grounds so we are also thankful for the home game none the less.

As an update I will be seeing the orthopaedic surgeon on Monday 9th August to have a scan etc done as they think I have torn the achilles tendon. So far no damage to the bones only ligaments, tendons and posssibly the achilles.  I will keep you posted on the recovery….

THANKYOU ONCE AGAIN TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU WHO WERE THERE AS YOUR PRESENCE MADE THINGS SO MUCH EASIER.

From

Kellie Foster - part of the ladies grass team on behalf of the Foster family - Geoff, Kellie, Rikaya and Brodee

Ed’s note….. Thank you Kellie for your words. WE ARE A FAMILY AT THIS CLUB AND WE DO LOOK AFTER EACH OTHER. We are proud to have you and your family as members of our club

Southern River  vs Kwinana

Rob saves the day

We finally got to see who this elusive Curtin Trinity side was today after they avoided playing us in round one by forfeiting to us. They have been beating most sides by large margins over the last four weeks and we have been looking forward to playing against them. The interesting thing was this Curtin side was made up from at least six of the Curtin players that we had beaten to win the first premiership for our club in 2006. We were short of two players this week but we had two worthy players to fill in their roles in both James Gradisen and Greg Button and we thank you guys for your great efforts today. It took twenty minutes of play for us to score the first goal only to see Curtin score an equaliser within one minute of us through a short corner. The game was really a game of missed chances as the goal keeper for Curtin and our keeper in Rob continued to keep the goal scoring to a minimum. We had many near misses in both the first and second half whilst Rob kept us in the hunt for a win with many fine one on one saves, many of them with shots taken from only one or two meters out. The game started to fall our way when we realised that we could not go through their right full back as the ex classic league player was stopping everything that came his way. With our change of tactics we eventually ran over the top of Curtin slotting in another two goals in the second half and narrowly missing about six chances with two near goals being cleared off the goal line. The final score was three goals to Southern River and one to Curtin Trinity. Thanks to John Heath for another great umpiring display.

J5/6 Gold

3 games left for the season and we are currently in second spot on the ladder with only 1 goal difference separating us from top spot.

We had our first loss of the season before the school holidays but we have bounced back with 2 wins. Wins over Kalamunda, 4 – 0 and Pirates 8 – 0 have helped our goal difference and we are on a charge.

All but 3 of our players have scored goals this season with the latest “new scorer” being Donovan Heath…well done!! It is my “goal” to have all the players experience the high of scoring a goal. Wes managed to get 5 this weekend, well done! Thanks to Sarah and Nathan for volunteering to have a go in the goals. It can be a bit boring in the goals when we are winning 8 – 0, but you have allowed Dylan to have a run, which is a great team effort.

I have noticed a great improvement in all the players’ skills and the future of the club is looking good.

This weekend we play against Dale and are hoping to improve our goal difference with a big win….so please come along and cheer us on!!

I would like to take this opportunity to give a huge thanks to Gibbo. He has without fail, pitched up to umpire for us every Saturday morning. He has no kids of his own…yet, but still puts up his hand and helps us out. Gibbo, you are a great asset to the club and we appreciate your help!!

Go The Hawks!!!

Coach – Colin Stewart

Match report:  Metro 3 Gold

31st  July vs. Kalamunda

Result 2-0

At home this week and it was great to see the alfresco area set up, music blasting and heaps of Hawks supporters at the ground to cheer on the many teams that were in action. At great atmosphere for all involved. This weeks opponents were Kalamunda who gave us a good fight in the first round and who we needed to beat to keep our finals chances strong.  Gibbo and Eggs were missing this week after being asked to help out the 2’s but we gained DK who was being eased back into playing after a few weeks off with work commitments.

We started the game quite well and were dominating possession around the mid field and gaps were being found into attack. A couple of near misses resulted and some sustained pressure rewarded us with the first short corner of the game. Troy converted the corner with aplomb and we got the early lead. Kalamunda fought back strongly and found some space up forward after a quick break. A short corner was conceded but a good stop from Brandon kept them out. We continued to press and created some chances but couldn’t put any away. DK was running hard and we were combining pretty well although not moving the short ball enough and relying on the long ball a bit too heavily. We went into the break 1-0 up.

At half time we knew we had dominated but the score didn’t reflect that and we wanted to put some distance between us and Kala. We pressed hard and created some chances but we were kept out by some very good keeping and errant shooting. The team persisted and continued to work hard to create more chances and sure enough Cameron from the wing put one away after a goal mouth scramble. 2-0 up and looking for more we pushed hard but couldn’t put any more on the board. At the other end the defense held up well including some nice saves from Brandon who enjoyed his best game since playing in the seniors.

All up a pretty solid effort this week but we know we need to improve a bit if we are going to be a force in the finals. Big game next week against Vic Park where we need a big win to help our goal difference..

Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us.

Southern River  Vs Rockingham

31/6/2010

“WE CAN ADAPT”

By Barry Romaro

Today we welcomed Rockingham to the Hawks Nest and we were all looking forward to this clash, as the last time we played them it was a cracker of a game. Rockingham moved the ball very well right from the outset of the game as we tried to adjust to a different structure this week forced on us by injuries and absenteeism. This week we were without the services of Trenty and John Gradisen, John through injury and Trenty is holidaying in Malaysia. We decided to give Paul Dixie a run at left wing and we played Phil Parkes at left half and Darren mills slotted into centre forward for us. All three players had a great game but it did take us until after half time to adapt to the change in personnel. We put their defence under pressure for the first seven to ten minutes only to have the ball come straight back at us. Is was not until we realised we needed to use the square passes to take the ball around their defence that we started to settle down with more direct and relaxed passes. We scored the first goal after some superior ball movement by our midfield and forward line and a scramble in the circle. We rallied together and after many chances we scored a second goal to go two one up at half time. During the half time break we talked about making a few changes to shorten our passes and also the way we would attack the circle and these strategies worked well. We managed to slot home two more goals in the second half but Rocky battled very hard and they were very quick to respond with a scrappy goal straight after our third goal. Rockingham counter attacked us relentlessly only to be stopped by our rugged defence for the rest of the game. The final score was 4-1 win to us and proves we can win games even without two of our main strike forwards. A very special mention goes to John Heath who umpired us very well.
