SEASON 2009 FINAL HOME AND AWAY GAMES

WELL HERE WE ARE …. AS WE ENTER THE FINAL ROUND OF HOME AND AWAY FIXTURES FOR 2009, WE CAN REFLECT ON OUR GREAT SEASON. WE HAVE AT LEAT TWO TEAMS CERTAIN TO QUALIFY FOR FINALS AND DEPENDING ON HOW GAMES GO THIS WEEKEND WE COULD GAVE AS MANY AS SEVEN.

MENS ONES

PLAYED 14 WON 7 DRAWN 2 LOST 5 LADDER POS 4TH

Two games and percentage clear in 4th spot. Play team in 3rd this week. All being well should qualify for 1st semi final with a repeat of this game scheduled for the first week of the finals.
This team has performed well on occasions and has been hiy hard by injury to key players including club captain Lee Hansord. Work commitments have restricted Paul Baillie’s appearances and the team has remained positive to qualify for another tilt at the premiership. Many new faces this year and quality has been exceptional. Well done guys and win or lose we expect to see you all back next year.

WOMENS ONES

PLAYED 15 WON 15 DRAWN 0 LOST 0 LADDER POS 1ST

Three and a half games clear on top and sailing a perfect race. This team has been playing excellent hockey all year and has returned some outstanding results. The team has been rebuilt from last year and some very handy acquisitions coupled with the returning stars, has seen them carry all before them. Rightfully, they are premiership favourites and barring any un foreseen form slumps or injury should reclaim the premiership they narrowly lost last year. The club is so very proud of your achievements and wish you all the very best for the upcoming final series.

MENS TWOS

PLAYED 14 WON 9 DRAWN 0 LOST 5 LADDER POS 3RD

Sitting in third spot and well ahead of the fifth placed team, whom they play this weekend, will qualify for finals action. This team is playing turf for the first time this year and has provided the club’s top team with some good depth as well as carrying all before them. A good blend of youth and experience has seen this team play some great hockey and are not without a chance in the finals if all goes well. Need to have all players fit and firing and a Grand Final appearance is well within reach. Great effort guys in a year where you have had to provide players in the top side to plug some holes. Go get ‘em Hawkers !!!!

CLUB AGM 730PM THURSDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER-CLUBROOMS

LADIES TWOS

PLAYED 15 WON 3 DRAWN 2 LOST 10 LADDER POS 8

Recently I highlighted this teams efforts this year, so I wont go over old ground. Just look at the column that shows games won…..3 No one in this team of hockey novices could have dreamt that they would win any games. The team has some great experienced players amongst their ranks but the majority of these ladies had not held a hockey stick before. The incredible patience and understanding of the girls who had played before must be acknowledged as they willingly took the new comers under their guidance each week and taught them the game. Well done to the whole team and we hope to see your smiling faces at the club in 2010 !!!

MENS THREES

PLAYED 15 WON 7 DRAWN 3 LST 5 LADDER POS 4TH

One name symbolises this team- Barry Romaro. I have been careful not to single out names in this season precis but I could not let this one go !! This team was thrust into the fray against some quality opposition and at the start of the year seemed headed for a long drawn out bleak season. Step up the good old Hawkers spirit and determination and you have our Mens 3’s. Not only have they performed with distinction and held their own against teams ranked higher than them, they hold their own destiny in their hands this weekend. A win should cement a spot in the finals series for the 4th successive year and we all know the grit and determination of these Warriors. With their famous never say die attitude, don’t be surprised to see this team playing deep into September. You don’t need to be wished good luck- you have the skill and tenacity to succeed.
CLUB AGM 730PM THURSDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER-CLUBROOMS

MENS FOURS

PLAYED 14 WON 3 DRAWN 0 LOST 11 LADDER POS 7

This team has had to survive against all odds as they had many players succumb to season ending injuries. The most notable of which was the thumb injury to Captain Phill Parkes. There were times this year when these guys played out of their skins and fought valiantly to win some tough battles. The Hawks are proud of your fantastic efforts and it should be noted that quite often these blokes would start a game with less than11 players and still give a great account of themselves. You all can hold your heads high and be safe in the knowledge that every season is a learning curve and if you all have taken something positive from the season then you are all winners !!! See you all back next year……

MENS FIVES

PLAYED17 WON 11 DRAWN 1 LOST 5 LADDER POS 2ND

This team played in the mid season Challenge Cup Final when no –one expected them to be there. They have quietly but systematically gone about their business with a minimum of fuss. Quite often they have been the unsung heroes, made up of some Vets players from last year combined with some of the youthful exuberance of the younger guys. Well lead by the super efficient Brad George backed up suitably by the goal scoring prowess of John Trent. These guys have surprised many pundits by their ability to win the close ones and as was demonstrated last weekend obliterate some teams that dare challenge their ladder position. A club record 14 goals was scored by them last Saturday….. bask in the glory fellas and never say never and you could well be hanging a pennant on the wall come late September…..
JUNIOR SPOTLIGHT

UNDER 17’S – PLAYED 11 WON 1 LOST 10 LADDER POS 9 Great effort first up by the inaugural u/17 side. Onwards and upwards in2010.
UNDER 15’S- PLAYED 11 WON 10 DRAWN 0 LAST1 LADDER POS 1ST (CHALLENGE CUP WINNERS 2009) Finals await.

Southern River threes V’s Pirates
“FOURS TO THE RESCUE”
This weeks game was a must win situation for us, if we could beat Curtin trinity we would take fourth spot on the ladder. We started with nine players and before we could catch our breath we were down one nil. We answered the goal with one of our own in less than a minute and we were brimming with confidence. Troy arrived and now we were only one short then Miranda who was on the sideline put her hand up to play and went to center forward. We had four players from our fourth side filling in for us today and they all played well. We dominated the game from that equalizing goal and they only managed to score another via a dubious tactic during a short corner in the second half. Pirates also had the chance to score a goal through a penalty flick in the second half but Dave pulled of an incredible save millimeters inside the left post to everyone’s amazement. The goals and the shots came thick and fast during our second half and john managed another hat trick for the year. It was a satisfying result and we must now set I sights on beating North Coast Raiders next week to make the finals as our destiny is in our own hands now.
Thankyou to all our supporters it’s great to have supporters stand in the freezing wind and give us such great encouragement. I hope all of us can attend training more often as we will most likely play finals and a bit of extra training will serve us well.

HAWKS FINALS DAY 2009

The club has nominated and been granted a “finals day” on September 5th 2009. We will have eight games at our grounds including some of our own teams. Following on from the outstanding success from last year, the day promises to be a successful showcase for our club as well as giving some of our teams a “home ground” advantage as they strive for success. The day will feature the famous “alfresco” set up complete with umbrellas, music and a vibrant atmosphere. All members are encouraged to attend and bring your guests to enjoy our magnificent facilities. If you are one of the unlucky ones not to be competing in the finals series, please try and make time to support the teams that are. After all we are one mighty club at Southern River and we all bask in the glory and disappointment that may await any of our teams. The day begins with the first series of 4 games at 2-00pm and then progresses to the 4 matches scheduled for 3-30pm. Thanks to the hard working bar and kitchen staff food and refreshments will be on offer all day. Please help us to make this day an “advertisement” for our club. We received tremendous feedback from last years efforts and was instrumental in attracting new members to the club this year as well as enhancing our strong reputation with HockeyWA as a go ahead club with an abundance of energy and initiative. “GO HAWKS”

We were struggling to find a keeper or kicking back just so that we could run onto the field. Who came to our rescue? Candice Airey. Even though I am sure the keeping job was taken on with reluctance, Candice did a superb job and did not let a single attacker get within coowee of the goals. She was well supported by Tilly and Sass in the first half, and Tilly and Paula in the second half at fullback, whose touches (no we didn’t count them on one hand) kept the ball completely out of the Hawks defence and returned to the forward line where an awaiting Karyn was on FIRE. With what seemed like a million possessions and five killer goals and if that wasn’t bad enough for Whitfords the rest of the forward line was also hot to trot with nearly everyone getting a piece of the action. This was a great forward display of how to move the ball around and block in defender hit outs and at every opportunity slam the ball into the goals which is exactly how we obtained our biggest score YET!!

A big big thanks to Candice and Tilly for helping us out.

Whoever said this was going to be an easy game was really misinformed or did we make it harder for ourselves than we needed too? Bay Union were definitely out of the blocks fast and were trying everything to capitalise on a lethargic, half asleep Hawks team and it was just as well Miranda, Chris, Jessica and Nat were awake early on in the Hawks defensive half. With Miranda, Jacinta and Sass working closely together on the left the Hawks game has now opened up utilising both sides of the field and more drive is coming into the Hawks forward line from the left with some precision passes being bulleted into the D from Sass and Jacinta was up and about scoring two goals to open our account. A big welcome back to Ang, who didn’t seem to have lost any touch putting in another goal against her tally (except for that one wild swing). Karyn was as usual strong over the ball and had an opportunity to take a flick when a certain goal was denied by a defenders leg’s on the goal line, which of course she converted superbly. Tracey was as usual strong over the ball but was unaware of the rule changes where players are permitted to grab your arm and drag you off the ball. Kate was as usual impressive with her speed and agility and I’m pretty sure the ball is now keeping up with her. Michelle was unfortunate not to get a free hit when a player muscled in front of her and then raised her stick splitting Michelle just above the eye, just as well first aider Gail was on the side lines to patch her up… That will be a nice look for work!! Well done to all players with everyone contributing and taking on the new positions they were given with enthusiasm. A Big thanks to Jessica Heath for helping us out and a big thanks and appreciation to Fred for taking timeout to coach and support us.

Surrounded by Wolves

By Deb Clearwater

Saturday 15th August saw Southern River Gold girls travel to Swanbourne to take on Westside Wolves on their home ground. The weather storms that had been predicted for that afternoon came through early so although it was cold there was no rain or hail to contend with just a pack of hungry wolves.

Southern River Gold coming off a 4 – 0 win over Canning last weekend were confident of a strong showing this weekend. Although it was always going to be a hard task to beat the undefeated Wolves on their home ground they were confident of putting up a strong fight.

Lou had to make some changes to field positions as Amy was away sick so she had to move Chris up into Left Inner and moved Deb from Right wing to Left. In making these changes she hoped that it would spread our strength across the field and give us a few more options. Jo took up the Centre Half position which she played so well last week. We also were lucky to have Tash back in goals for us after some time away.

Lou won the toss and Tash choose to defend the West End of the ground. Wolves started strongly attacking our goal from the first hit out. Southern River Gold was quickly on the defence doing everything they could to keep the ball out of the goal. Annie, Lou and Tash did a fantastic job in the face of an organised Wolf pack. Southern River Gold defended well after numerous short corners were awarded to Westside Wolves.

It would be fair to say that on the few occasions Southern River Gold did get the ball for a run up the field, they were quickly chased down by a very fit and very skilled Wolves pack. Now I keep referring to the Wolves as a pack and it is not meant as an insult it is simply how it felt playing them. They were very organised and when you got past one of their players there were always 2 or 3 more there waiting to pounce on the ball.

Southern River Gold put up an excellent fight and kept Westside Wolves scoreless after the first 20 minutes but it was only a matter of time before they broke through as there was constant attack after attack on our goal. The first goal was a classic goal coming off a short corner and getting in behind the goalie, sheer numbers saw the ball over the line.

Jo and Deb then swapped positions to give Jo a breather after the constant defensive play. Deb wanting to try something different swapped with Robyn for the hit out and dummied a pass back to Robyn and took off up the field herself, this caught Westside off guard but they quickly regrouped. Deb hit the ball out towards the wing to get clear of the defenders but unfortunately hit it too far and turned the ball over for Westside to come back on the attack again.

Half time saw the score 3 – 0 to Westside Wolves. Southern River Gold came of frustrated and a little deflated. But a peep talk from Phil (Jo’s husband) got them revved up and keen to get back on the field.

Unfortunately, Westside Wolves came back even stronger in the second half scoring a number of unanswered goals. No matter what Southern River Gold tried there was always a Wolves player there to stop them. Phil tried making some positional changes to help the girls who were now getting tired and a little deflated but although these changes saw a couple of runs from Southern River Gold it was still not enough to get them on the scoreboard or stop the now stream of goals coming from the Westside Wolves.

Southern River Gold can be proud of their efforts against the top of the ladder team who have scored 90 goals this season. And to confirm this some Westside Wolves players were overheard talking to each other during the game saying “We’ve had to work really hard for these goals today”.

Although the loss was a come down from last week, I am sure the Southern River Gold girls will regroup taking advantage of the bye this weekend and come out fighting to secure one last win from their final game.

Go the Hawks!

Southern River threes V’s Old Guildford

THE FIGHT FOR FOURTH SPOT”

We are fast approaching the end of the year and the finals are looming for possibly five sides from Southern River and we want to be one of those sides.

We were playing the side in fourth spot today with us in fifth spot and we would like to beat them so we don’t have to rely on other results from other matches to make the finals.

This game was a real battle we are very evenly matched sides. I am not sure that it was a great game to watch but we battled from one end of the field to the other. Neither side scored a goal today but there were plenty of shots on goals especially from us. We just were not quite good enough with our finishing today as the game was ours for the taking on quite a few occasions but Old Guildford were rock solid on their last line of defense. Our short corners did not come off this week but I know we will be on target next week. Next week we face Curtin and with Troy unavailable and possibly Gibbo out with a quad strain its going to be a hard one. Thanks to the guys who gave me a hand post game as I had to leave very early this week I appreciate it.

Also thankyou to all our supporters once again it was great to have supporters who will stand in the freezing wind and rain and give us such great encouragement. I hope all of us can attend training more often as we still need to improve just that little bit more if we want to take part in the finals

GO HAWKS!

HOT HAWKS

I will leave the details of our women’s teams victories on the weekend to the colorful match reports by Paula Westell and Deb Clearwater, but a special mention must be made recognise and acknowledg the achievements made by the Hawkettes last weekend. Firstly for those who didn’t know our all conquering Ladies One’s team thrashed their opposition to the tune of 13 goals. It what is a club record our ladies went on a goal scoring spree and are now clear premiership favorites in their grade. A little thought for the uniniated: this team is made up of at least half newcomers to the club this year. Following the loss of goal scoring machine Alahna Ansett due to injury, there were some people who were apprehensive about how the team would achieve this year. Up stepped Fred Keane to coach and his ability to bring out the best in people started to have these girls believe in themselves and what they could achieve. They began the season with a level of skill and efficiency that had even the hardened sceptics marvelling at their efforts. They have carried all before them this year and the club is truly proud of the efforts and are confident that the can add another flag to the clubhouse wall.
Now the Two’s – This band of intrepid and adventurous Hawkers have shown that you just need enthusiasm, comradeship and determination, to show that the mountain is never to tall. This team is primarily made up of ladies who have never held a hockey stick, yet with the influence of a couple of seasoned performers and some wise words of wisdom from a couple of the older brigade around the club, have finally started to reap some fine rewards. The smiles and pride with which these girls walk from the field each week is a sight to behold. Win lose or draw that infectious feeling of being part of something growing is some thing that these ladies possess. It is clear that they are enjoying the company of their team mates and as their fledgling careers grow they are enjoying the improvement of each other as they reach their goals. At the start of the season all these girls wanted was to enjoy a game of some thing new and maybe meet some new friends. That has developed into a united band of warriors who with their “sisters in arms” go into battle proud that they don the uniform of the Southern River Hockey Club and the support that goes with them.
Well done to all involved……

This week we feature the HawkettesJessica Heath- The news filtered out late last week that Jess had made the team to travel to Beijing to represent Australia in an international hockey tournament. The club would like to take this opportunity to congratulate her on an outstanding achievement and wish her all the best in her exciting journey. More to follow (when her Dad finally sends me some details on the whole shebang!!!!!!!! Maybe some pictures (Hey Steve J )

THE GAMES

SMILES ALL AROUND

By Deb Clearwater

The rain held off for the game between Southern River Gold and Canning on Saturday 8th August. Southern River Gold was playing on the number 1 field and the girls were confident of their chances this week after so many close games. The game was delayed 15 minutes while the umpires gave the Canning team a chance for all their players to arrive. When it did eventually start Southern River Gold was off like a rocket. Lou made a few strategic changes to the positions by putting Lenni on at Right Inner, Deb on at Right Wing and Jo in at Centre Half. They also welcomed back Rachel who had been off due to injury. The logic behind these moves was to try and move the ball wide and give the team some fire power in their forward line. Right from the hit off Southern River Gold went charging up the field ever hungry for that ever elusive goal, their attacking play was rewarded with a number of penalty corners very early in the game. Deb scored the first goal after a great pass back inside to the top of the D from Lenni. The positional changes made seemed to be working as Southern River Gold played some great attacking hockey and spent most of the first half attacking Canning’s goal. Deb teamed up well with Lenni on the right with some great passing between them, Robyn and Amy also worked well together in the centre moving the ball from one side of the field to the other keeping Canning on the back foot. Deb had a number of shots at goal some just missing but she eventually got another past the goalie to put Southern River Gold up 2-0 at half time.

The girls were pleased with their performance when they came off at half time but they knew they had to push on and cement a good win. The second half continued where the first half had left off with Southern River Gold attacking the Canning goal at every opportunity. Their third goal came as a result of one of the numerous penalty corners which saw Faye in on the posts receiving the hit from Deb to fight her way in and push the ball past the goalie.

Things started to get a little testy as Canning was becoming more and more frustrated with the fact that they couldn’t get the ball down past Southern River Gold’s defence. Candice in goal only touched the ball once in the whole game which shows how much of an attacking game the girls played and how well they defended. The halves, Chris, Jo, Nicole and Rachel all fought hard for the ball and if they missed it they went back and got it back and they pushed on to get it up to the forwards for another run up the field.

Southern River Gold’s fourth goal would have to be their most spectacular to date. Again it came off a penalty corner. This time the first shot at goal went amiss but Amy was there to pick it up and flicked it beautifully towards the right hand corner of the goal, Lenni was in perfect position to take advantage of her left handedness and used her reverse stick, at hip height, to reflect the ball into the goal.

Not only did the girls play a great attacking game they also managed to keep Canning scoreless. Final score Southern River Gold 4 Canning 0.

Well what can I say, it was a great team performance with everyone working well and playing their hearts out. But best of all was to come off the field and see the smiles on all the girls’ faces.

Now that they have had a taste of that winning feeling, and a convincing win at that, I’m sure they are more than ready to give Westside Wolves a run for their money this coming weekend.

GO YOU GOOD THINGS!!!!

Metro 2 gold match report

By Barry Romaro 8/8/2009

Southern River threes V’s Melville

We new we were in for a hard game and we were prepared for it the last time we played Melville they beat us five to nil. Today we had four fill in players being Matt, Gavin, Kurtis and Thomas and they all played extremely well. Our side now only has nine players left and we are at the mercy of who ever is available for us from week to week and we appreciate the help we have received to date. We got away to a good start attacking well through our midfield and linking well with our inside strikers and our wingers catching Melville out. We scored first through Quinton via a short corner. We kept the pressure on only to give them an easy goal as we did the last time we played them. Soon after we panicked in our defensive circle and gave away a penalty flick that they converted. We went into the half time break down one goal to two. We continued on in the same fashion right from the start of the second half and it was about fifteen minutes into the half that we converted another short corner this time through Barry with a variation that caught Melville sleeping and the scores were locked on two all. Unfortunately Melville scored another easy goal with only ten minutes left in the game. We were determined not to loose this game after all the hard work we had done and with a couple of minutes to go we were awarded another short corner after John had a long run into the circle only to be hacked down by two defenders. After being awarded two more shorts after two good shots on goal we finally put the third one away through Quinton again. We ran back to the center and the umpire blew the full time whistle, we seem to be leaving things to the last seconds lately. Once again we would like to thank all the family and friends who came to cheer us on even though Quinton tried to knock a few of them out (you will have to ask Q-ball about that one)

HAWKEYE VOL4 EDITION 11

August 5th, 2009 by Janson Hoskins

HAWK EYE

Southern River Hockey Club Vol.4 Ed 11

THE HAWKS ARE BACK

Well done to all members and supporters for turning out in numbers and enjoying the atmosphere that was the Hawks Club Day 2009. The day started early with a willing band of volunteers turning out at 7-00am on Saturday morning to prepare for the junior program. Thanks to Guy Hoskin and Greg Button for touching up the lines in readiness for the early games. The dew was still wet on the ground as they trudged around the pitches. Danny Hetherington and Kyle Annett-Stuart were seen with buckets of sand repairing a broken sprinkler in an attempt to ensure there were no injuries. Out came the tables and chairs and umbrellas and music that make the famous Hawks Alfresco famous. The smells coming from the kitchen and the queues for the coffee signalled the day had begun. The carpark was full as junior players and “hook into hockeyers” assembled to start the days action. Cindy Heath, John Heath, Michelle Hoskin and their willing band of chefs were feeding the hungry crowd. Dave Vanderputt grabbed the vacuum cleaner and the entire jigsaw fell into place as the unheralded band of Hawkers went about the business of ensuring the day kicked off with a minimum of fuss. Sorry if I have missed any of the early crew. You know who you are and your efforts don’t go unnoticed. The dew was gone as the sun was now bathing the Sutherlands Park in glorious warmth and bright light. As the remants of the junior contingent packed away the morning, the senior volunteers started to amble in. Out went the corner flags, the signs in the goals stood proud. Nina carried her delicious goodies into the kitchen ready to gather her band of helpers and began the days menu. Teams started to arrive. Visitors to our home marvelled at the atmosphere as we welcomed them to our showpiece. The kitchen was soon churning out toasted sangas, hot chips, pies burgers and all the “healthy” food associated with a sporting club !!!!!!! (LOL)

Barman Brian arrived to load the fridges with the much awaited refreshments of the alcoholic kind. His trusted “side kick” Jean sliced the lemon to satisfy the throngs of Corona drinkers who cry….. wheres the lemon !!! All was in readiness for the afternoon session of Hawks Club Day. Oh yea the hockey…..

I will let you read the reports but lets just say the results were fitting for the efforts put into making the day a success off the field. News even filtered through that the 2’s had a victory down in Rockingham. The day was well under way. The weather switch was turned on and as our Mayor’ Olwyn Searle was heard to comment” my goodness what a fantastic club you have here” the games began. Supporters from our teams made their way down to the club bringing family and friends. Teams playing late came early, teams playing early stayed late. Seats in the “alfesco” were scarce. The hockey being played was fierce. It was an amazing sight to stand and take in the crowds and players as they all played their part in ensuring our day was a success. Win or lose players donning proudly our club uniform were enjoying themselves. Opposing teams took up station in the Hawks Nest and kept Brian and his staff busy throughout the afternoon. As games concluded and satisfied Hawkers made their way to join the day, late games commenced to the upbeat music of 92.9. Feet were a tapping and mouths were a mouthing and the atmosphere was buzzing as the sun began to settle. Whistles sounded and cheers and clapping resounded as the late games concluded…..

The day had ended but the night was just beginning. The kitchen was struggling to keep up with demand, Brian and Jean were now joined by John Grads as the party swung into action.

People came and went but the party that is Hawks at play continued…

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR RESPONDING TO THE CALL AND MAKING THE DAY SUCH AS SUCCESS

Club Day Match”

This game was crucial for us to win to maintain our slim chance of making the finals. We had a few things go against us before we even put a team on the field. Simon Gillespie had surgery this week after having his cheek bone broken in three places by a deflected ball, and Boyd Burns also received a broken rib ending the season of both players all in last weeks game. We all wish them well during their rehabilitation and will see them back on the field in 2010. This week we were playing the undefeated Moderians who not only kept us scoreless but the last time we played them we did not even get into their circle. We borrowed two players from the fives David Vanderputt and Paul Dixie and both guys played very well for us. Right from the start we moved the ball with confidence and had many attacking chances it was only their Goalkeepers saves that allowed them to hold us to a half time score of nil all. We were very happy with our first half and decided to keep going the way we were and we felt we could win this game. In the second half we broke through early with a goal to Troy Cornish and we looked like putting on a few more until we gave away a short corner that resulted in a goal to Moderians. Determined to not give in we battled hard with many good moves but it was not until the very last seconds of the game that we scored a Great goal through Ian Eggington. The celebrations were reminiscent of the celebrations after winning last years flag such was the feeling among us in beating the previously undefeated Moderians. I hope to see a few more faces at training now that the weather has improved and I know we can all do with a bit more practice. Thankyou to all the cheering crowd and the fantastic work done by all those fantastic volunteers that our club is very lucky to have. I would also like to thank the Mayor of Gosnells City who came and saw all the great work that has been done to create the Southern River Hockey Club. I was lucky enough to have a few words with our Mayor before our match and she seemed to be impressed with the atmosphere we have created so well done to those very special people who never receive enough accolades for the tireless work they do.
Watch us grow, go the mighty Hawks!

Southern River 8 vs Rangers 0

What a lovely day and what a lovely turn out for the Hawks Club Day, a great club atmosphere. We were unsure of what to expect from Rangers as we remembered it being quite a hard game last time we played but it didn’t take long to get the first goal on the board and the momentum swinging the way of the Hawks. The usual players were strong over the ball and dominating the half back line. Rangers continued to pressure our defences on their right which saw Miranda and Jacinta get a fair few more touches than they would normally, they both took it in their stride and used each other exceptionally and were able to clear the ball forward to waiting attackers. Our right back also got to see a little more of the ball than we would have liked but Tilleah did a superb job and for someone so young seemed to have the patience and control that some of our senior players are still trying to achieve. Fortunately Nat (goal keeper) only got to see the ball a couple of times. The Hawks right side of the field was as dominant as ever with Chris, Karyn, Tracey and Paula working the ball into the forward line (until Tracey came off injured with a lovely stick to the cheek bone). Some beautiful passes from the half saw Paula receiving and taking the ball inside the D drawing defenders and passing to a waiting Hayley on the left post who managed to tap most into the goals (persistently in the right spot). Kate was as usual running everywhere and was rewarded with a goal and Karyn managed to get herself on the scoreboard again (yay). During the second half some different players entered the spotlight with Michelle receiving some lovely passes from Miranda and Jacinta however was unlucky not to score (keep working hard, you will be rewarded). Then Tracey latched onto an errant pass from the opposition to run solo into the D and was unlucky not to score as the ball had a mind of its own at the last minute (but the weaving around the defenders looked great another run like that this week please). Further into the second half saw the entire team GASP as Karyn left the field injured (well okay maybe only I gasped) what would we do now who would receive our short corner passes but all was good Amy entered the field and took control (look out Karyn) and we were given further opportunities to score when a short corner was awarded. Just who would receive the pass? Step up Chris with a flat (about time) pass to the top of the D Chris trapped and then returned the ball to an unsuspecting Paula who managed (only just) to get stick onto the ball and put it straight into the goals. Short corner number two, well it worked the first time let’s try again except how about a shot directly on goals and bingo that’s what happened, Chris belted a lovely flat ball straight into goals (they do work taking them on the right). After having so many perfect hit outs on the shorts it was only expected that somewhere along the lines it would all go pair shaped and yep it did, just as well Tracey was able to step up and take over. Another great team game played by all and being spurred on by the crowd of Hawks supporters was tremendous. A very big thanks to our subs Tilleah and Amy we couldn’t have done it without you and to our number one coach Fred and again a big thanks to our supporters.

CLUB WINDUP-FRIDAY 25 THE SEPTEMBER—YES IT’S A FRIDAY AND THE DATE HAS CHANGED. MORE DETAILS TO FOLLOW.

FAST AND FURIOUS

By Deb Clearwater

It was Club Day for the Hawks on Saturday the 1st August and there was a good turnout of supporters to cheer on the girls. The sun was beating down on Southern River Gold as they prepared to take on the Kwinana Tigers and welcome Jo back from her big OS trip with what the girls hoped would be the win they have been working towards.

Southern River Gold won the toss and chose to attack the North goal. The girls had been briefed on the fact that the Kwinana Tigers were very strong in the centre and the plan was to play the ball out wide to counteract this fact. Unfortunately, Southern River Gold were caught on the hop as Kwinana flew up the middle from the first hit off and got an early penalty corner which Kwinana executed brilliantly with a scorching hit through the middle of everyone into the backboard. Kwinana 1 – 0 up with less than five minutes gone in the game.

The girls slightly stunned but eager to rectify this early setback played some good attacking hockey. They nearly hit back soon after with a well placed shot at goal with Tilly in perfect position to get the deflection on the post, unfortunately the ball just missed her stick and it turned into a 16 yard hit out. Again Kwinana’s strength and speed up the middle saw the ball quickly up the other end of the field and yet another goal to Kwinana. The game continued to play out this way with Southern River Gold clearing the ball and attacking Kwinana only to find it come straight back at them. Southern River Gold had another opportunity to get on the board but Amy was unlucky not to get the ball over the line – missing by less than a foot. The Southern River Gold girls were getting caught by the speed of Kwinana’s middle players and their ability to chase the ball down, something they had not come up against to date and therefore were getting the ball stolen from them as they went to pass the ball on.

The first half was played at a fast pace and had a major scare for Southern River Gold as Lou hurt her hip midway through the 1st half and had to go off. This forced a few positional changes with Tilly coming back from Wing into Fullback and Faye coming back off the bench to take the wing position. The 1st half ended with Kwinana again scoring to go into half time with a 3 – 0 lead. As Fred said at half time “three down is a hard place to come back from but it’s not impossible – keep fighting and you can do it!”

As the girls took the field for the start of the second half they were relieved to have Lou back on the field. Fred made some positional changes with Amy dropping back into fullback to help Lou and Annie coming up into Inner. The girls determined to strike back and even the game up started well and had Kwinana on the back foot early but again were unable to capitalise on some great runs. They defended and attacked well but were unable to finish off when it got up to the circle. Robyn had a great run up the middle about halfway through the 2nd half seeing her get past numerous defenders to take on the goalie but was unable to get past this final hurdle and once again the ball came racing down the field aided by the very quick Kwinana players.

The Southern River Gold team fought hard in the second half and threw everything they had at the Kwinana team this enabled them to keep Kwinana scoreless in the second half but they were also unable to make up the 3 goals that Kwinana got in the first half. The game was played in great spirits by both teams and some excellent umpiring helped in achieving this.

Kwinana took the game 3 – 0. But the second half of hockey was some of the best hockey Southern River Gold has played this year. They showed fight and determination not to let Kwinana score any more goals. If the girls take that same intensity into next weeks game against Canning they should come away with a very good result.

Don’t lose heart girls – look at how far you’ve come since the start of the year. Wow!

MYALUP IS COMING…… START THINKING ABOUT IT. TAKING NUMBERS AND MONEY IN THE NEXT COUPLA WEEKS. STILL $100 BUCKS. LAST WEEKEND JAN 2010…… THINK OF YOUR NICKNAME AS WE HAVE SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT PLANNED FOR THE SHIRTS THIS YEAR. I HAVE BOOKED TWO MORE HUTS THIS YEAR SO WE CAN ACCOMMODATE UP TO 60…..
