The Southern River Hockey Club is eagerly awaiting the impending commencement of the 2012 hockey season on the weekend of April 14th. The club has undergone an extensive pre season campaign, beginning with the annual Myalup camp at which over 40 people attended. The pre season training continued over the last 2 months in the late summer heat and numbers at training were extremely pleasing. With the re appointment of Matthew Butterini as Head Coach with Guy Hoskin as his deputy coupled with the high number of new faces joining existing members, the Hawks are on track for another highly successful season.
Junior training is in full swing on both Tuesday and Thursday at the club. The 5-00pm start on both days applies to all age groups except under 11, who remain on Thursdays only. Junior coaches are also extremely encouraged by the high numbers at training and at this stage could have several teams in all age groups. The Under 17 team still has vacancies and coach Greg Button is keen to hear from any prospective players wishing to be a part of this historical team. Greg can be contacted on 0488581226. Junior players of any age group wishing to play hockey this year are also extremely welcome and should attend training on the aforementioned days at the clubs headquarters on Gay St Gosnells or should contact Cindy Heath on 0439699724.
The club held its annual Open Day last Saturday and was again an outstanding success with several exhibition matches played. These matches further highlighted the extraordinary array of talent at the Hawks disposal this year. Both senior men and women played some fantastic hockey and the junior matches provided a great spectacle for the many spectators in attendance. The “alfresco” provided great atmosphere and with the fine weather , the bar did a roaring trade.
Training this Thursday is not compulsory although players are encouraged to attend as the season is upon us after Easter.
The club will conduct its annual Players Tea next Thursday 12/4/12 as a pre cursor to the season. The team captains will be announced and the first teams for 2012 will also be named. This is an important occasion for the season and all members are requested to attend. All anouncements and the official opening of the season will be conducted following training.

With the commencement of turf training at Melville turf ( refer “Training Schedule” on left) we wish to announce the conclusion of Sunday training. The 6 weeks of pre season training has been very well attended and thanks to all those who tumbled out of bed each Sunday. The numbers were very encouraging and it was great to see the number of new faces in attendance. This officially signals the end of the pre season sessions and sees the 2012 training programme proper begin in earnest
Thursday training is well and truly underway and will still commence at 6-00pm until further notice. The bar is open and we encourage those attending training to come into the clubrooms to cool down and experience the social atmosphere that the Hawks are so famous for.
On a personal note , I would like to thank all those who turned up to the pre season sessions and supported me in the exercises. I trust it proved valuable to those involved:)

HAWKS SECURE TOP COACH
The Southern River Hockey Club is proud to announce that current Australian player, Matthew Butterini has been re appointed Senior Club Coach for the upcoming 2012 season. The Hawks are extremely pleased to secure Matthew in what is an Olmypic year for the Kookaburras. Butterini was a member of the Australian team that won the coveted “ Champions Trophy” in New Zealand in late 2011. His role in that campaign proved his invaluable contribution to the success. Matthew again will bring his vital experience and knowledge in the modern game to the very successful local hockey club. The training skills and structure associated with the Australian team proved pivotal in the Hawks outstanding 2011. The club won three Premierships and numerous prestigious awards last season and hopes to continue that development with Butterini at the helm again.
Pre season training has been an outstanding success with many new faces coupled with a sea of familiar faces sweating it out in the late summer heat. The club is currently training on Thursday evenings at 6-00pm and Sunday mornings at 8-00am at the Gay St clubrooms. Turf training commences this week and all players aiming to play top level hockey in 2012 both Men and Women are required to attend. The club is currently in the process of assessing applications for the Assistant coaching role for the men and Senior coach for the womens teams.
In a landmark development for the Hawks, the all conquering Veterans over 40’s have been promoted to Division 1 this year. This is significant for the club as this now means that the team will be pitted against the best veterans players in WA each week. The exposure this creates for the club is immeasurable and is further testimony to the professional approach of all players involved.
Junior training dates and times will be decided in the very near future and the coaching panel for all junior teams is currently being finalized at present with an announcement expected in the coming few days.
The Annual Club Open Day planning is well under way and the date for this event will be detailed following the Committee meeting to be held Monday night.
