THE GRAND FINAL

Southern River vs Hale

Masters 40’s

Division 2

27//2011

“Back to Back” \

By Barry Romaro

Today’s game saw us playing off against Hale for the second Division premiership. It was a fairy tale to even suggest that we could be promoted from Third Division then finish second in division two and make the Grand Final. The game started with us making all the attacking moves and our forwards gave the Hale defence merry hell. We had many missed opportunities until we earned a penalty corner and we used our set play for Andy Smyth to slot away a great goal. Hale responded with many attacking moves, only to be rejected by our tight defence. Then Hale were awarded a short corner much to the dismay of our defence and our very vocal crowd. During the penalty corner Hale got a shot on goals that Beat our Keeper Rob but was stopped on the line by a foot and Hale were awarded a penalty flick. Rob narrowly missed saving the flick and we went to the half time break one goal each. We failed to adjust to the different style of umpiring with four players at different time being sent off and Hale were very lucky as they survived doing the same thing time and time again without the  penalty of a card. The second half was much like the first, both teams were trying to assert themselves and our defence stood tall through it all. We had numerous near misses and even a goal disallowed that is still a mystery to all of us. Deep into the second half Hale were awarded another penalty flick for another unintentional foot in the circle. Our whole day was on the line when Rob pulled off the save of the year getting down low to his right and making a double save as the ball spun back towards goal after his initial save. Andy was heard later telling all who would listen that it was the first penalty Rob had saved in a decade (brotherly love). Within minutes of Rob’s heroics the whistle blew to signal the end of regular time. Now we had to play for a Golden Goal. The first two minutes saw us battling hard in the midfield but not being able to break through the defences set up by Hale. Hale had their chance to attack our goals only to be turned away by a timely tackle by Martin. That tackle spilled the ball over to Jamie who slotted it across to the right side of the field. Our midfield then ran the ball wide and then passed the ball into the circle and with all the confusion of the fast turnover Arthur got a reverse stick shot away that beat the goal keeper sealing our premiership in our first year of Division two. The end result was a two goals to one win to the mighty Hawks. Thanks to the great crowd of supporters who gave us the most rousing support any team could ask for. First Division next year is a possibility. GO HAWKS!

Grand Final Winners

1-0       Chelsea

In the words of Kaylish “Oh My God, Oh My God, Oh My God! We Won!”

The Team!

2 Cougars (Kaye and Andree) became Hawks this season. 2 Kiwis (Pauline and Lana) joined the club. A new Mummy Bear (Cassie) came back to the game and joined our other 2 Mummy Bears (Katie and Michelle). Our little hawkettes (Kaylish, Chelsea and Bec) played big girl hockey. Our Jay bird (Jacinta) was always there and a new Hawk (Tiffany) flew in to join us. Our parrot on the back line (Nat) was a great addition. All of us then backed up beautifully by our Starfish (Miranda)

The Game!

What is there to say? This wonderful team played their hearts out on Saturday evening. Everyone gave more than 100%. No one gave up or gave in! We went into the game knowing we were the last ladies team to attempt to take the flag! NO PRESSURE! We may have been the underdogs but we were determined to give Hale a run for their money! And that is exactly what we did! The end of the 70 mins saw us all square at nil all so extra time was invoked. Hale won the toss and elected to take the ball. Didn’t matter though as within 3 or so minutes Andree had won a short corner. Pauline took the shot which was saved but a scramble occurred and Chelsea managed to send the ball across the line. KAOS reigned – The umpire signalled goal, Hale were in shock, supporters yelled and the team and John screamed, ran, hugged, cried, laughed, cheered and then TOOK A BOW! The game was ours.

The Coach!

The Grizzly Bear (John) lead us to this victory with his oh so pleasant encouragement and tender words of praise!!! He knew, just like we knew, that we could win this game! His great coaching, set plays, rough plays! and  good drills throughout the season all helped to get us on the winners list.

The Extras!

Only 14 girls took the field on Saturday BUT the win is SO much bigger than that. To every Hawk or Hawkette who took the field in any game with us or who trained with us THIS IS YOUR WIN TOO!

The Supporters!

As much as we tried to stay focussed on the field and not the stands during the game it is a wonderful feeling know that a stand full of supporters were there for us!  Having you all there from the beginning to the end sharing in every aspect of the game was just brilliant. To you all we say THANK YOU!

There is nothing left to say other than “THE YEAR OF KAYE CONTINUES!!!” Thanks  to this great club and this great team for a fabulous year of hockey.

GO HAWKS!

(Oh That’s Right, We Did Go and We WON!)

Match report:
Metro 4 vs. WASP’s
10th September

Result 2-0

A beautiful warm day for hockey and we take on WASP’s at their home ground. Ben Collier is back in this week and Andy Britt unavailable. 3 on the bench which we were going to need on a hot day.

We started very strongly and had Wasp’s on the back foot early on. We were teaming well together with quick passing and strong running having leading to plenty of ball in our forward half. Some short corners resulted and Ben Collier was on the spot again to put in a deflection after a nice shot in from Troy.

We continued to press and dominated play. Kyle was playing strongly at full back and Georgie was controlling their right wing nicely. Good combinations from Gibbo down the right with Cam, Andy and Brian putting together some really nice moves.

Near the end of the first half we cut off a Wasp’s attacking move and quickly transferred the ball down to the other end of the field through a series of quick moves and hard running. Rusty got on the end of the move and put away the goal to finish off one of the better team goals of the season.

2-0 at half time was a good reward for effort for the half.

The challenge was to maintain the intensity for the 2nd half which we did pretty well. Carl continued to control the game from centre half with strong support from Rusty and Owen playing the inner roles with aplomb. Ryan and Ben worked well on the left and we pressed hard for a 3rd goal to put the game beyond doubt.

The goal didn’t come but as Wasp’s tried to press we held very firm down back and they were not allowed to get a meaningful shot away.

So onto the Grand final next week – a good reward for a very strong season from the Metro 4’s.

A huge challenge to knock off Harlies next week for the flag. Something we are very capable of doing if we play to our best.

Go Hawks!!

Southern River vs JTA
Masters 40’s
10/9/2011
“Road to glory”

By Barry Romaro
Today’s game saw us playing off against JTA to cement a spot in the grand final. The game started with us doing all the attacking and our forwards had the backboard ringing after only ten minutes we were attacking with a lot of purpose. We settled down into our best attacking moves from then and could of had the backboard ringing again and again but we had many near misses or saved shots by the JTA keeper. We controlled the game from then to the half time break, but JTA had a few good counter attacks that were expertly cleared away by our resolute defence. The second half was much like the first, both teams were trying to assert themselves and our defence stood tall through it all. We scored second goal of the day at about the fifteen-minute mark of the second half and the nail was now in JTA’s coffin. We attacked with more venom using Colin through our centre corridor and cutting the JTA’s defence to pieces, but we did not add any more goals to our tally though we could of easily added another three or four. The end result was a two goal to nil win to the mighty Hawks. Thanks to the great crowd of supporters who have travelled to nearly all of our games to cheer us on once again. We play Hale next week for the premiership flag it wont be easy but we are determined to give it our best shot.

GO HAWKS!

PRESIDENTS REPORT

The Finals are here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Firstly i must congratulate all of you who worked so hard during the season to ensure we all made it to the finals[except one but will get to that later]
At the time of writing this I am preparing for the AGM this Thursday and doing the usual number crunching to make sure I get another term J..No I am really sitting here having a Corona as usual.
This year has been another successful  year both on and off the field with the only disappointment being the lack of members at the social functions this year.

The bar was once again cranking and thanks must go to Geoff and Kellie for their outstanding work, both behind the bar and for keeping the club clean every Friday..BIG THANKS YOU GUYS !!
The kitchen produced some of the best meals ever this year and you could regularly see Greg Button, and others, going back for thirds. The food was that good, so to both Michelle and
Kris a huge thank you for keeping all the masses fed.

To all the people that helped them when the cleaning was to be done or food dished out well done. We even got to have
a guest appearance from Nina Keane who produced one of her great curries.
To all of the committee who work so hard behind the scenes to keep this great club running, I would like to take my hat off to you all as without you there is no club. SO FROM ME A PERSONAL BIG THANK YOU FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE !!

I cant name you all, as Janson tells me off for waffling all the time, and I will probably leave some one out !!
I must say that it is a privilege being the President of this great club and I am very humble to have been the person that you put your faith in to lead the club now and into the future. Thank you all for your support !!!!

The club is only as strong as its weakest link and this club has NONE…

Now for a quick whinge…The club relies on members doing their part where our commitment to Hockey WA is concerned so when members don’t do their umpiring duties, it not only costs us fines but it also costs us Finals
This issue will never arise again as for the start of 2012 season all members are required to do their umpiring duties or find someone to do them for you!!!! It is not the responsibility of the club. It is YOUR responsibility!!!!!! As of next year failure to do your duties will result in a match suspension and the fine will be passed on to you. If you refuse to pay the fine or umpire you may be suspended for 1 match.
This is a serious issue as it has now cost one team the opportunity to play Finals. So next time you think about not fulfilling your duty, spare a thought for the other members in your team. We had a team miss Finals this year by 0.7 of a point. To miss Finals after a season full of hard work is devastating, to miss Finals because some of your team failed to umpire is heartbreaking !!!!
Now for the really good stuff. This year we floated the idea of putting a turf in at the club. A Turf Committee comprising Clive Reader, Guy Hoskin, Ben Armstrong and John Gradisen was formed. They have put some hard work into researching the feasibility of constructing an artificial playing surface at our grounds. As a result of this exercise, the Gosnells City Council have agreed to build it in time for the commencement of the 2015 season…
Now before you all get excited…we now have all the hard work to do. The Business Plan has to be drawn up … a Financial Plan has to be formulated. We have to raise considerable funds to fulfill our part of the deal. So if you know of any organisations or businesses that you think might be willing to assist with sponsoring this exciting venture, please feel free to talk to
any member of the Turf Committee. A series of sponsorship packages will be available in the new year for you to present if you know of anyone.
You may notice a time line going up in the club and a financial time line also going up. That way we can all see where and when it will all happen. So get excited !!!!! We are going to put together a club member brick wall with everyone being able to buy a brick, this will enable all of us to have some ownership over the build. As I’ve learnt over the last 6 years there is nothing that we as HAWKS cannot do together.

Last line…………PLAY WELL LEAVE NOTHING BEHIND AND REMEMBER BE PROUD OF WHAT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED AND OF WHO YOU ARE…………..YOU ARE HAWKS……………….

THE GAMES

Prov 3 Gold

Won 3-1 (Pirates)

Pauline-2, Jess-1

Ahoy me hearties! The treasure almost be ours after Captain K took her crew to the stadium and made those Pirates walk the plank. It didn’t be a flogging, but shiver me timbers it be a good win.

In fair winds we scored early when that scallywag Kaylish gave the ball to Pauline who in ship-shape form scored a goal.

Pauline kept up the heave-ho to score a second and that mutineer Jess put away the third.

Although not a flogging we did weigh anchor very happy. Our ‘swashbuckling’ coach was heard to shout “avast ye” as we did what we were told and came away with the win. He rarely had to scream Aaarrrggghhh! Because the game be a good one!

Bring on next week when we once again try to plunder the Pirates and take the treasure they so desperately seek.

Southern River vs Willetton

Masters 40’s

3/9/2011

“Reds”

By Barry Romaro

Today we welcomed the league leader Willetton Reds to our great club. Willetton have won three out of the last four premierships in this grade and we all knew this would be a tough game. The game started at a frenetic pace with Willetton on the receiving end of some great attacking moves by us, but we did not put our goals away in the early stages of our game. Over the first fifteen to twenty minutes we attacked with gusto and Willetton had few chances of scoring. We put away the first goal of the game through a penalty corner. This only sparked Willetton into a frenzy of attacking runs and if it was not for Rob pads soaking up the “Reds” onslaught it would have been a very heavy day. Eventually Willetton scored an equalising goal just before the half time break through our leaking defence. Our wings were kept out of the game today due to us using the long pass far to often and during the second half our Endeavour to chase down the Reds had become all but invisible. We were on the receiving end of a good hockey lesson and we were well beaten four goals to one. We will have to lift our game many notches if we want to have any chance of winning the grand final. Thanks again for the great support that we received from the great crowd that enjoyed the Hawks Alfresco atmosphere.

Match report:

Metro 4 vs. Subs

27th August

Result 3-2

We travelled to Subs to play on a cow paddock disguised as a hockey field. With about 5 mins to go before the game we only had 9 players but everyone got there for the start. Our warm up was low key and normally we start really poorly after a poor warm-up. This week we came out of the blocks like a bat out of hell and with only 10 minutes gone we had 2 goals on the board thanks to nice follow up work in the circle from Rusty and a nice deflection on the line from Ben Collier.

The game evened out a bit after the start and we were having trouble adjusting to the bounce of a very uneven surface. Despite this there were some periods of very good play with combinations down the left from Ben C, Andy, Ryan,  Rusty and Owen and the right with Gibbo (having a rare venture to right wing), Carl, Brian, Kyle and Cam. Subs got a goal back after some missed traps in deep defense, but we quickly responded with another from Rusty who was having a great game.

In the second half we had a lot of play but couldn’t convert. Subs were playing a very high forward set up and relying on the long ball out of defense. We got caught out a couple of times and were a bit lucky not to concede more than 1 goal thanks mainly to some desperate and very good keeping from Bono and a number of short corner saves from the short corner defense team.

A 3-2 win in the end but not our best game of the season. We have a week off then into the finals.

We had a good turnout at training on Thursday again and we need to keep it up to keep on top of our game for the finals.Best players

Southern River vs Hale

Masters 40’s

27/8/2011

“Ultra Slim”

By Barry Romaro

Today’s game saw us playing off against Hale to cement second spot for the season and if anyone would of suggested that we could be promoted from Third Division then finish second in division two we would of said the chances of that were “Ultra Slim”. The game started with us doing all the attacking and our forwards had the backboard ringing after only seven minutes we were attacking at break neck speed. After about fifteen minutes we settled down into our best attacking moves and had the backboard ringing again and again. We had many missed opportunities from then to the half time break, but we could not buy a goal. The second half was much like the first, both teams were trying to assert themselves and our defence stood tall through it all. Hale scored their first and only goal of the day at about the fifteen minute mark of the second half against the run of play. We got angry and attacked with more venom using Colin through our centre corridor and cutting the Hale’s defence to pieces but we only added one more goal for the second half but we could of easily added another three or four. The end result was a four goal to one win to the mighty Hawks. Thanks to the great crowd of supporters who have travelled to nearly all of our games to cheer us on once again. We play Willetton next week and they are top of the table so we will have to put our best game on to finish the regular season on a positive note. GO HAWKS!

Lost 0-2 to Uni

They won, we lost.

They came first, we came second.

Uni scored, Hawks didn’t.

They cheered, we cried!

2 on their card, 0 on ours.

We were defeated, they weren’t.

They overthrew us, we were overthrown!

They celebrated, we commiserated.

They possibly went up the ladder, we probably came down.

We stayed for drinks, they didn’t.

Not much else to say!

Kaye

Well here we are, the last week of the home and away season. It appears we will have several teams playing of for September glory and we wish all those teams good luck as their finals campaigns begin next week. For those teams who will be playing their final game for 2011 this week, we hope your season was enjoyable and we hope to see you at the AGM, Windup and next season…..
