“Home Brand”

By Barry Romaro

Today’s game was the kind of tuff game we need with the run to the finals over the next two weeks if we manage to win our next two games we could finish second or first if certain results fall our way. The game started with one of the best team plays for the year we managed to take the ball from the centre pass and all the way to score a goal without Melville even touching the ball. But unfortunately that was the only first class hockey we played for the day, as from then on it was “Home Brand” Hockey (lifeless, boring and cheap). Even though we went on to score another fine goal through Phil we never really dominated the way we should have. We continued our lifeless brand of hockey all the way through into the second half of the game. The game seesawed for entire second half with the low light being a lapse in our concentration that allowed Melville to score a goal. All in all we are looking good for a solid finals hit out with our squad starting to play the way we want to for most of our game. The final tally for the game was a two goals to one win to us. I would like to thank our great crowd of supporters who came down and savoured the “Alfresco” and gave us rousing support from the sideline.

Metro 4 vs. Harlies

13th August

Result 3-4

At home this week on a sunny afternoon with the alfresco pumping and lots of Hawks games to view.  Harlies the opposition this week in what we hope will be a preview of the grand final this year.

For the first time this year we were down on numbers with only one reserve available. Cam, Andy and Ben were all out this week. Big thanks to Barry Romaro who backed up from the Vets (sorry Barry should that be Masters??!) and provided plenty of grunt from the bench.

After two very close results with not too many goals against Harlies earlier this year the 1st half was surprising full of goals. The first ten minutes or so were closely contested but we were moving the ball when with quick passing and good use of our teammates. We tried some different positional changes to cut down the drive from Harlies centre and right half which was working very well.

After some very nice ball movement down the left, the ball was crossed through to the right where Brian found himself with a defender and the goalie to beat. With a cool head, Brian very calmly slotted the goal and we had a nice fast start.

Harlies struck back with a goal from a short corner to even it up. The ball was moving between both ends of the field very quickly in what was a high standard of hockey. After some good build up down the right where Brian was having an outstanding game, the ball was crossed in and Owen put away the rebound off the keeper.

Unfortunately we couldn’t keep Harlies out and they got one back again so back to level. We continued to press and just before the half Barry latched onto a loose ball in the circle and beat the keeper. 3-2 at half time.

The standard of hockey continued to be good in the 2nd half and we continued to shut Harlies mid field drive down effectively. Harlies got a good goal about halfway through and  a tight tussle resulted for the balance of the half.

Unfortunately with only a minute to go a lifted ball into the circle was not called by the umpire and Harlies managed to scrounge a goal. The whistle sounded and the final score of 4-3 did not do us justice. We deserved a point from the effort today.

Some really positive aspects of today were our great effort with pressure and back tackling throughout the game and nice finishing in front of goal. Combinations down both the left and right hand side were very good with nice linkage between the lines.

A real good effort with lots of determination and never give up attitude displayed by all. We do need to learn to keep our heads with the umpires and keep positive at all times.

We had a good turnout at training on Thursday again and we need to keep it up to keep on top of our game for the finals.

MYALUP 2012

As mentioned in the last couple of editions of the Hawkeye I have opened bookings for Myalup 2012. As this goes to print the response has been extremely disappointing. A lot of time and effort goes into organizing Myalup and the weekend has been a highlight for many Hawks since we started the pre season camp in 2007. For many of us that came from a club in a “previous life” the Myalup weekend has been on the calendar for over 25years.

When: February 3rd/4th/5th 2012.

Where: Myalup Beach Indian Ocean Chalets

Cost $100 (2nights accommodation + commemorative shirt)

Event: Pre Season Training Camp

Deposit($50) required prior to 2011 season end and is non refundable as shirts need to be ordered in December. It is imperative that you register your interest as soon as possible otherwise we will scale the weekend down and it will just become another weekend away. Obviously I don’t want to do that so please make it a priority to register with me.

NINA’S COOKING !!!!!!!!

Yes that right Nina Keane has offered to make a guest appearance in the Kitchen on Thursday 25th August 2011. For those who may be unaware, Nina was the pioneer in our kitchen since our inception in 2006 and produced many a culinary delight on Thursday nights. The queue lining up for a serve of her curries stretched back to the toilet doors sometimes. Make it a date and come and enjoy dinner with Nina and your fellow Hawkers as season 2011 rapidly comes to a close……

Masters 40 Division Two

Vs Suburban

13/8/2011

by Barry Romaro

“Moxie”

We travelled to Nedlands to face off against a side on the rise with strong performances and wins against top four sides in recent weeks. We were not going to take them lightly and we set about attacking from the get go. We scored our first goal through Andy and that only seemed to spark Suburban into life. For the next fifteen minutes they attacked relentlessly only to be denied by Rob and our strong defence. We then had our turn to do the attacking and we came up trumps when Arty got onto a a great pass by John and slotted in a great goal to put us up two nil. After the half time break we had several strong chances to add to our score but we did not finish them off and we controlled the game well only to finish the game with not adding another goal. It was not a pretty game at all as somebody had put a “moxie” on us and we complained about every single umpiring decision made for the whole game. Next week will see us playing against another giant killing side as Melville are in a purple patch at present.

Thanks to our lovely supporters who braved the chance of bad weather to come and support us.

Metro 4 vs. Freo

13th August

Result 1-0

We ventured down to Freo with the prospect of a stormy afternoon in more ways than one. It’s always a tough physical game with Freo and we knew if we were to win it was going to take a good effort all day.

Some changes again this week with Troy and Brad unavailable and Ben Collier back in. Andy and Cam forgot to use the street directory, got lost and arrived right on the starting whistle. As it turned out, the Dockers were getting hammered again so Troy decided playing hockey was better than watching Freo play footy and rocked up in time for the 2nd half.

The first half was a fairly even affair although the Hawks had the majority of the ball. We were using the ball well, but a little too slow with the passing but still produced some good penetration down the right with Brian, Cam and Andy in the forward line teaming well with Gibbo and Carl from the half line. Andy Britt slotted in beautifully at left half and shut down their right wing completely. Our play was rewarded with a few short corners and Owen came really close to putting one away. Rusty was also very gutsy playing with sore ribs and added a possibly broken forearm to the damage he carried into the match.

0-0 at half time and we needed to continue our effort and hope that some scoreboard reward would happen.

Early in the 2nd half Freo reverted to their usual methods and tried to tackle us with their elbows into faces rather than go after the ball. Shrek at fullback took out some of our younger players with Cam copping the worst and copping an elbow to the mouth. To his credit and the rest of the teams’ credit we continued to focus on the ball despite the umpires ignoring the appalling play from Shrek and others.

About 10 minutes from time we pressed forward again and after some nice build up work got a shot on goal. Cam was on the spot and pushed one through the keeper for a very well deserved goal. We held on for the last few minutes and were a bit lucky when the umpire blew the whistle for full time with the ball in dispute in our defending circle.

A good win with lots of determination and never give up attitude displayed by all.

A big challenge for us next week against Harlies where we can test ourselves against the current No.1 team in the grade.

We had a good turnout at training on Thursday with 11 guys turning up which was great to see. Let’s keep this up for the rest of the season.

Presidents Report

Last weekend saw another great set of results for our great. Everyone should be congratulated on their efforts on and off the field.

The winning feeling is starting to flow through the club now that it is coming up to finals and every team has started to secure their spots in the final four. Every one will notice the changes in final structure

with there being only two weeks of finals .It doesn’t matter where you finish first or fourth any one can make the Grand Final. Good luck to all in contention.

Good luck to Jessie Ryan who has made the state squad and is               waiting to hear if he made the final 16.

Knowing Jessie as i do, he is in with a really good chance.

The club is cranking on Thursday nights and Saturday mornings through to the arvo games and if your not there then you are missing out on some good food and good hockey.

Has anybody seen that new bloke on crutches wobbling around the club ,yes he has recovered from his hip replacement and is on track for a comeback next season .Its good to see my good mate back up and running as I’ve missed him at the bar keeping me sane.

As you might know yes I’m on face book now so look me up and we can have a chat .Don’t know why but im loving it…..even though Macca and Rusty are on.

Last week i had to play two games as we were short in the twos and ones along with coaching and umpiring three games. I’m a bit tired and sore ,not that i expect any sympathy but thanks to Rusty who umpired with me doing the 50s and did a great job, you see people like that make the club tick. Thanks mate. The club is in debt to all the volunteers who help out each and every week. A sincere thanks for all your efforts.

Inclosing i hope you all have good games this week and represent the club with pride and honour and come back from your games to the club and you never know i might even buy you a beer.

Heathy

Povisional 1 Women

This week saw us at PHS 2 playing Vic Park. When we arrived it was interesting to see 8 of the Vic Park U/17 girls roll up.

Just a note that their 17a side has not lost and beats teams by cricket scores .With a full squad of 15 we

took the field running an 8 min rotation was in order so we could have fresh legs against these kids.

Little did i have to worry, WOW, the girls were on and set about destroying the opposition bit by bit.6 nil was the score and it could have been 20 nil if we hadn’t missed as many as we did.

I have to say that it was some of the best hockey i have ever had the opportunity to coach.

Tracey Jarion had one of the best games ive seen her play and she worked so hard with some great hard forward attacks and some great defending runs from inner.

Jessica Heath dominated at every position she played and at one stage took the ball form the half line into the D and cracked a sensational goal. well done !!!!!

Kris (hotlegs) had an exceptional game at inner and her running ability was something to be seen, you guys really have to see these girls play they are unrea.l

I know I’ve only mentioned three players but it was one of the best team efforts i have ever seen and these three just stick in my mind with the things they did on the day.

Its funny how you remember the things said. Gail said at the start of the season that we will get pumped in Prov 1 funny how we are now in the finals and in with a chance of taking home the goods if the same mind set is carried through into the finals nothing will stop us .Might even coach again next year…………………Premier Alliance is on the cards…………….

well done ladies because you all played so well you can have this weekend off so you can practice your umpiring skills……..

Heathy… Coach….Messiah…..Very naughty boy…

PS…. i cant close without mentioning” toot toot” what a game by the pocket rocket.. you gotta see her play…Shit hot…. what is your phsios name………mmmmmmmmm

Beware the sleeping tiger…

By Macca (Captain SRHC Masters 50s)

Our opponent’s position on the ladder was in no way a reflection on their ability. They were due for a big game and our job was to consolidate and improve our game as we approached the business end of the season.

We started well with our forwards keen to put in a good performance up front. Phil Hewton was back this week and immediately went to work making an impression. Hammond on the right wing worked well with Johnny to try and open cracks in the Blades defence. Lloyd and Jeff (also back this week) were resolute at half back and showed pit in a solid effort to arrest Blades flow of play. Mike was seeing a fair bit of the ball and was unlucky not to reap benefits early. Some of our basic skills let us done on a great pitch. Darren was creative on the left wing and worked several opportunities into the circle and was unfortunate not to be rewarded against due in part to a very skilled and capable Blades goalkeeper.

The defence through Macca and Baz worked well, switching the play regularly and opening up opportunities. The forwards were very good in presenting themselves as options. We worked hard and went to the break 1-0 through a great piece of play by Phil under pressure.

The message at half time was (1) we needed to lift and capitalise on the opportunities in front of goal and (2) run out the game to the end. A one goal lead was too tenuous and we went out as if it was 0-0, looking to make an early impact.

We engaged well and made several attacks on goal but again were thwarted by good goalkeeping and some closes misses. Shaun offered himself as an option on a wing and Len showed his flexibility in covering both on a wing and half back on separate occasions. Frosty was very strong in driving options through the centre half and fed several forwards. Blades attack mounted a few challenges but through some solid keeping by Steve and great disposal out the back line we were able to repel. We finished the game tired and took the 1-0 win. It was not our best or most skilful game and there is more work to do if we are going to be more productive and a factor in the finals series.

Best Players: Baz, Darren and Phil.

Thanks: Many thanks to John Heath (despite a bad case of the flu) and Rusty Snook for supporting us with umpiring and for the crowd support from the “alfresco” including the familiar face of Janson Hoskins- welcome back!

Match report:

Metro 4 vs. Kwinana

6th August

Result 4-1

Wanting 2nd spot

At home this week playing Kwinana on what was a really nice sunny day especially after last week. Ben Collier was out this week and Troy back in. We needed a good win against Kwinana who are sitting 4th and a win over them should keep our 2nd spot looking good for the end of the year.

Kwinana were down in numbers and we needed to take advantage and start strongly. With lots of space to use we controlled the ball for the majority of the time but didn’t penetrate early on. After a while we settled down and some shots at goal were generated. Unfortunately our radar needed recalibrating as we sprayed a few shots wide and let Kwinana off the hook.

Soon though Troy lifted a nice shot over the sprawled keeper and we were one up.  We must have thought we had the game wrapped up as a lack of chase and pressure allowed Kwinana to get one back after an shot from an acute angle.

1-0 at half time against a team short on numbers was not a good effort. We needed to forget the imbalance and use the short ball and use it quickly. With that message in our heads we went out with a bit more intent in the 2nd half .

Before too long in the half the guys all started to team up and move the ball quickly. Our trapping skills improved and we had some really nice ball movement  happening . Sure enough goals resulted with Cam picking up a nice deflection from a short corner and then within 5 minutes Troy slotted 2 more to pick up a well deserved hat trick.

No more goals for the rest of the game but we did have some more chances and played much better that the first half. We need to capture that form in coming weeks to secure 2nd spot.

We had a good turn out at training on Thursday which was great to see. We still need to get everyone down to work on the combinations and skills that we need in the 2nd part of the season.

CHALLENGE CUPS

Metro 4 vs Harlies 16th July

Result 1-2

Another hard match was on the cards for this year’s challenge with our opponents (Harlies) being the yardstick of the Metro 4 competition.  We welcomed back Andy Brit but Clive and Andy Reader were out this game.

As anticipated, the game started with a very quick pace and we were on the defensive from the outset.  Harlies dominated the first 10 mins and they moved the ball with ease and were playing good hockey.  We managed to break it up with a few good runs forward with Cameron, Rusty and Kurtis leading the charge but our defences lapsed we conceded the first goal in general play.  The umpires were controlling the game well and I think some of us have had an easy run with the usual umpires we have on Saturday afternoon but not this week!  An obvious green card to one of our players (and a Harlies player) in the first half saw us one man down but the forward pressure from Harlies was just too much and we conceded a second goal later in the first half.  We had a couple short corner opportunities but couldn’t find the back of the net.  The half time whistle couldn’t sound fast enough.

After regrouping and two goals down, it was going to be massive ask for the team to rally but we seem to play some of our best hockey with this as motivation.  To our credit, the quick ball movement, early passing and hard running (all things that we drill into the guys at training) payed off and we move the ball freely and we scored with about 10 mins to go, courtesy of Troy.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough time to score the equaliser but the second half was very pleasing to play and watch and we held Harlies scoreless in the second half.  Hockey is played in two halves and to play finals, teams must play consistent hockey week in, week out, first half and second half.  This will be something we will work on in coming weeks as we have the second place WASPS next week at home.

Last of all, thankyou very much to Barry Vanderputt who volunteered to manage our side on Sat.  It was great to have Barry there to give support and guidance to interchange players and it made my job a whole lot easier!  Thankyou to all the supporters who came down to chear us on.  Your support was invaluable.

Metro 4 vs. Lakers

23rd July

Result 4-0

2nd spot up for grabs

Back at home this week after a disappointing Challenge Cup match last week. An opportunity to reclaim 2nd spot after giving it up a fortnight ago

We needed to start well and fortunately got away to a flyer with the ball movement quick and decisive with short passing being used to excellent effect. Lots of penetration into the circle was the result and a number of shots on goal taken. This week we got some great reward for effort with Cam converting early to put us 1 up. Shortly after Rusty put one in with a really neat deflection off a short corner. We continued to press and young Ryan was rewarded for some good positioning in the circle when he cleaned up the scraps from the goaly and put the ball across the line.

This was Ryans first goal in senior hockey and received a big cheer from the team and supporters.

3-0 at half time and some really good reward for effort. As a team we were running hard to create space, back tackling and working together as well as we have all year.

The 2nd half was a repeat of the first with us generating heaps of opportunities down forward. The backline was keeping things tight and providing good drive for up the ground. About halfway into the half Owen scored our fourth and we were looking good. Fortunately there was no loss of intensity and we maintained this lead through to the end.

All up a very good team effort today with some really good running and tackling in particular.

Plenty to keep working on though so lets get down to training and practice our skills

“The Tenas”

By Barry Romaro

Today’s game was an arm wrestle from the outset, only we knocked the wind out of Whitfords sails with an early gaol through a great reverse stick pass by John Gradisen with Arthur receiving it and flicking it past the Whitfords keeper. After about ten minutes Whitfords regained their composure and relentlessly attacked our circle only to be rejected time and time again. We struggled to clear the ball past our half line as Whitfords trapped the ball well and moved it on to their forward line quickly giving our defence a very good workout. It was not until the middle of the second half that we scored our second goal, it was a reverse of the first one with Arthur being the player to hit the ball across the goals and John Gradisen tapping it in for a fine goal. The umpiring was very consistent this week and that helped the flow of the game and we thank them for showing up as well because Whitfords is a very long drive. The next stop was the players review where the five ‘tenas” would be showing of their remarkable operatic skills. Next week we face Uni Associates who are a very strong side and beat us easily the last time we met. The final tally for the game was two a goals to nil win to us. Best players:

3-2 win over Whitfords

Stephanie, Kaylish, Jacinta

It seems to me that to win a game. You must have a type of bird in your name.

The Eagles won 65-64. The Hawks 3-2 was the score.

Steph on the post scored goal number one. And who was proudest? I think that was mum!

Kaylish got goal number two. And they she did shout WOO HOO HOO!

2 nil up to start the second half. Tanya in goals you made us laugh.

Kick the ball away not into the net. Another mistake, goal 2 they did get.

The score now 2 all draw. We had to play on and get another score.

We left it to Jacinta to play it hard. Backstick shot, goal 3 on the card.

Not bad for some girls who the night before, Had done some synchronised swimming across the floor.

The skit night was fun for all. We drank, performed and had a ball.

The laughs came thick and fast, And everyone there had a blast.

Into the four our team will now stay. And for this week’s newsletter that’s all

I’ll say.

Southern River vs. Uni Associates

Masters 40’s

“Pads”

By Barry Romaro

We welcomed Uni Associates to our water logged grounds today and we wanted to redeem ourselves after being out classed in our last encounter to “Soaks” going down to them three goals to nil. We were determined to show that the last game was a fluke by them but we were under the pump from the very start. Uni Associates had all the confidence and made some very good attacking moves penetrating our circle on many occasions and had two short corners against us within the first ten minutes of the start of the game. We got into our grove after that and scored our first goal through some superb passing and the finesse finishing of John Trent. Now we had Uni on the hop and we attacked with vigour and within minutes we scored another goal with John Trent finishing off a great pass. With the two nil lead we had all the confidence we needed and Uni were lucky not to have gone down a few more goals. We started to tire late in the first half due to lack of player rotations and Uni slipped in a goal. We went into the half time break two one up. During the half time break we talked about moving the ball out of defence with a switch of play and to also keep using Colin through the centre. We came out in the second half with gusto and before long Trenty scored his first hat trick for the year it was revealed latter that he has switched back to the same flavoured Power-aid drink as he used last year and it has made all the difference. We started to lose players to injury and we are lucky to have some depth on our bench. We continued our dominance and scored another goal through John Gradisen and we were unlucky not to score more but the Uni keeper made some great saves. The game ended with us winning four goals to one. One of the features of the game today was how we handled the wet weather and the extremely slippery surface it was well noted that Robs “Pads” soaked up all of the moisture in the scoring zone. We have umpiring next week so we all have a chance to recover from our injuries. I would like to thank our great crowd of supporters who came down and gave us support from the side line in cold blustery rainy conditions.

Metro 4 vs. Dale

31st July

Result 5-0

Winning in the wet

Away to Dale this week on a very wet and windy day. An important game for us to establish 2nd position and get a positive goal difference happening.

Our warm up was not great and we needed to get focused on the game. Fortunately once the game started the team was pretty switched on and the team work was OK.

After a few forward entries into the circle a shot on goal was stopped on the line by a foot from the Dale defence and a penalty flick resulted. Rusty calmly converted to give us a good start. Shortly after Carl got his first goal for the year after a number of shorts and we had a good lead.

2-0 at half time and although we weren’t playing great hockey we had taken some chances but knew more effort was needed.

In the 2nd half we followed the half time instructions well and moved the ball a lot quicker and earlier than in the first half.

Some really nice ball movement was the result and fittingly the goals came. Ryan scored his 2nd goal in 2 weeks with a miraculous push from the base line which snuck home closely followed with goals to Brian and a 2nd for Rusty.

5-0 was  a fitting result against a Dale team that seemed to have  a few ring ins for the match. Big challenge next week against Kwinana and we need to reverse the result from the first round.

We had a good turn out at training on Thursday and we need to get everyone down to work on the combinations and skills that we need in the 2nd part of the season.

Prov 3 Gold

3-0 over Fremantle (Pauline 3)

Rain Theme!

As we drove to the game it was a case of HERE COMES THAT RAINY DAY FEELING AGAIN! And we were right.  IT NEVER RAINS IN CALIFORNIA but it sure did rain at Melville on Saturday. By the end of the game we were SINGING IN THE RAIN at our win but we could see a few BLUE EYES CRYING IN THE RAIN from the Fremantle girls at their loss. Not sure if they will BLAME IT ON THE RAIN but SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW we were saying I’M ONLY HAPPY WHEN IT RAINS. Our Hat Trick goal scorer Pauline was able to have LAUGHTER IN THE RAIN. She scored her first goal by passing to Keelie who fed it straight back Goal! At this time there was NO RAIN! But then it was HERE COMES THE RAIN AGAIN for her last 2 goals. Both off short corners that Andree in her wisdom decided to take the initial hit out, straight to Pauline. Goal 2 and then Goal 3 the same way. For Fremantle it was a bit of a RAIN ON MY PARADE type of day. We were very wet at the end of the game but we never cried BABY CAN YOU STOP THE RAIN? A great team effort and win that keeps us in the four.

A personal thanks for all the messages of support from members of this great club. My operation went well and recovery is on track. I apologise for the non appearance of the Hawkeye over the last couple of weeks but all articles submitted over that time have been published here. I will endeavour to get back to the club as soon as I get doctors clearance and look forward to catching up with everyone soon. Janson Hoskins
