THE GAMES

MENS TURF 1

In round 11, the Hawks took on UWA for the second time this season. Historically the games between the two teams have been tough. In the first half of the season UWA had the Hawks behind 1-3 at half time, however the Hawks pulled away to take the game 4-3.

The team was left the same as the previous week, with Dan one again in charge of protecting the goals. The game started with some strong attacks from UWA, however there were even more attacks from the Hawks. After countless attacks it took the Hawks 20 minutes before they broke the barrier when a strong ball-in from Tim Bowman was deflected by Jonathon Lanzon into the back of the net, via the Keeper’s helmet. Shortly after Lee Hansord was the second to score, after collecting a perfectly weighted ball from Jason DeWind and putting it past the keeper.

With plenty of attacks came a number of short corners. Before the first half ended the Hawks scored on two short corners, the first from Adam Thompson on the left post and the second from Rob Smyth after a flick inside the circle. After 35 minutes the Hawks came our strong ending the half up 4-0.

The second half saw less changes to the scoreboard with neither team able to convert. That was until the 30th minute when the hawks finally broke away. Hawks fifth and final goal came after the UWA keeper was forced to pull off a save from a Lee Hansord shot, only to drop the ball in reach of Jonathon Lanzon who made no time to finish it off. Although the Hawks had a slow second half, they were happy with a 5-0 win over UWA.

Back in the Black

By Macca (Captain SRHC Masters 50s)

With two losses from our last two starts we ran a real risk of a form slump. We were back at home after 3 weeks away and keen to do well against Vic Park. We welcomed back Len Davies for his first game of the season and found ourselves with a strong line-up albeit missing Rob with an ankle injury incurred in the last game.

We came out of the blocks hard and ready to stamp our authority on the game. We dominated play in the first half and applied constant pressure on the VP back line. Our forwards made several concerted attempts at goal but were unable to capitalise with some shots going wide of the target or strong work by their goalie . We lost our star full-back Baz early with a calf injury with Frosty joining Macca to re-stabilise the back line. Jeff Anderson and Lloyd showed wisdom and cool heads under pressure to come up with some great touch coming out of the back line and generating several opportunities. Hammond slotted in at centre half and provided several avenues going forward for Darren, ‘Skip’ and Phil Hewton who was already showing displaying touch. John Ellis was dominant across the ground and Shaun and Geoff were solid in a variety of positions. We rued what should have been a 3-4 goal half and we went into the half time break 0-0. Vic Park (to their credit) were aided by some good work in their defence.

The captain’s message at the break was a need for more intensity in the circle or to force a our hand to a short corner to swing the momentum back in our favour. We know we could do a lot better and we needed to capitalise and be rewarded for our positive work.

We started the second half as we did the first, aided by goalie Steve directing traffic and keeping us in check but with us showing a greater tenacity. Mike was active up front and well supported by Darren and Hammond having a significant effect. Len Davies joined in at right wing and through some interaction racked up our first goal. That inspired us and our game evolved into a better, more efficient brand of hockey with some great short passing and use of the breadth of the ground. Darren was rewarded for his efforts with a second goal which saw us through to full time and a 2-0 win.

Best Players: Phil, Macca and Frosty.

Thanks: Many thanks to Dean Savage-Morton for umpiring us as his second game for the day. The Bar and kitchen staff for the snack platters for us after the game which was much appreciated

“Stayfree”

By Barry Romaro

Today’s game was played under very cold conditions but we had a bumper crowd who were enjoying the comforts of the legendary Hawks Alfresco. We started the game brimming with confidence but this was a very different and much stronger side than the last time we played Pirates. We linked up better this week making the opposition chase us consistently only to turn over the ball when we had opportunities to lay off a good pass. We had many chances in the first half to get the back board ringing but some superb saves by Pirates keeper kept the game locked at nil all. We went to the half time break with a game that we were controlling but neither side had the goals to win this tight battle. During the half time break Chippy pointed out that Arty was all alone on his wing and if he could “Stayfree” in the second half we should use him more. We did this and in the second half we had many attacking moves that were created by Arty but to no avail. Close to the end of the game we managed to get a free just outside the circle and Colin snuck in behind the defence just outside the circle. The play was set, Barry hit the ball between two defenders Colin trapped it then slugged it into the centre of the circle where Trenty got a touch on it but John stepped in and slammed a great goal into the top right hand corner of the net. We battled it out over the next few dramatic minutes before the final whistle sounded. The final tally for the game was one nil win to us. I would like to thank our great crowd of supporters who came down and gave us rousing support from the side line across the oval away from the Alfresco’s creature comforts.

Metro 4 vs. Lakers

9th July

Result 0-1

Opportunity Lost

At home this week with the Alfresco pumping and 4 home games to watch. After having secured a Challenge Cup spot we wanted to consolidate our position with a good win at home. Matt Collier filled in at goalie this week and we had a full squad to play.

In the first half the ball movement was really good with short passing being used to excellent effect. Lots of penetration into the circle was the result and a number of shots on goal taken. Unfortunately for us the Lakers goalie was having a day out and stopping everything that we hit at him. We managed to not get frustrated and kept up the pressure and generated a great chance with a cross from the right. Brad George got into great position but somehow managed to hit the ball over the cross bar from about 5 m out. 0-0 at half time was the result despite the Hawks having most of the play.

The 2nd half was a repeat of the first with us generating heaps of opportunities down forward but unable to get through a very tight Lakers defence. More shots at goal and short corners were created but we still couldn’t find a way through. With only 5 mins to go Lakers had a free hit and the ball made it through to an unmarked forward who got a deflection leaving Matt no chance. There wasn’t enough time to get one back despite repeated thrusts forward.

All up a very good team effort today with some really good ball movement happening but a disappointing result. Plenty to keep working on though so lets get down to training and practice forward work and set plays inside the 25.

CHALLENGE CUP

At this stage it appears we have 2 teams playing off for the Challenge Cup next weekend. The Mens Grass side under captain Clive Reader and the Mens second turf side under Kevin Pethick have both made it to the final. It’s a great achievement to be in the top two at the halfway mark of the season and we wish them all the very best of luck and in true Hawks spirit, no matter the result, we are all proud of you. There were a couple of near misses. In fact at one stage things were looking good for ALL teams to be a chance to be in the top two in their respective grades. The cards didn’t quite fall the right way and some were close but not quite there. Well done anyway.

TIMES AND DATES FOR CHALLENGE CUP FIXTURING WILL BE ANNOUNCED NEXT WEEK. STAY TUNED !!!!

MYALUP 2012

YES THAT’S RIGHT, I SAID MYALUP 2012. AS WE REACH THE HALFWAY POINT OF THE SEASON IT IS OPPORTUNE TO START THINKING OF THE 35 DEGREE DAYS AT THE BEACH IN THE SOUTH WEST. IT WILL BE HERE BEFORE WE KNOW IT. THE COST LOOKS LIKE REMAINING THE SAME ($100) AS LAST YEAR. THAT INCLUDES 2 NIGHTS ACCOMMODATION AND A COMMEMERATIVE SHIRT. BOOKINGS ARE OPEN NOW AND WE HAVE 40 PLACES(CAPPED). DUE TO THE HIGH NUMBER OF CANCELLATIONS LAST YEAR, I HAVE TO INSIST ON A STRICT $50 NON RETURNABLE DEPOSIT. THIS AT LEAST COVERS THE COST OF THE SHIRT AND CONTRIBUTES TO THE ‘BASE RATE’ FOR THE ACCOMMODATION. YOU CAN PAY IT OFF SO COME AND SEE ME. YOUR NAME WILL NOT BE ADDED TO THE LIST UNTIL THE DEPOSIT IS PAID. YOU HAVE UNTIL THE END OF YEAR WINDUP TO BOOK AND PAY( THAT’S PLENTY OF TIME)

THE GAMES

Prov 3 Gold Women Drew 3-3

Scorers:- Tiffany, Jacinta and Keelie

(As Keelie went to Miley Cyrus after the game, that will be the theme of the report)

This game could have been considered THE CLIMB as a win would have moved us up the ladder. This was not to be as we could only manage a draw. Being game 10 it was START ALL OVER for the round and last time we actually lost to Rockingham. GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN was our motto on Saturday and we knew we had come FULL CIRCLE as we began the second round of the season.

We played a good game but would not say we had THE TIME OF OUR LIVES. We had many opportunities to score and repeatedly said LET’S DO THIS, but we could not get that extra goal.

It was not a DREAM when Tiffany and Jacinta and then Keelie scored their great goals.

Umpiring once again was not brilliant and Andree wanted one umpire to be GOOD AND BROKEN after the game. Our feeling about one umpire was WHEN I LOOK AT YOU, we just want to hit you.

There are 7 THINGS he needed to learn about umpiring:- Travel 5, Feet, Obstruction, Long Corners, Goalies sitting on the ball, 3rd Man and Short Corners.

Luckily our game finished BEFORE THE STORM. Not so lucky the 2’s men. They got very wet. (No we didn’t laugh??)

Once again we said GOODBYE to Rockingham and SEE YOU AGAIN, hopefully in the finals.

It might be time for a G.N.O (GIRLS NIGHT OUT) so we can get CLEAR about where we want to go with this team and hopefully live THE GOOD LIFE and not end up BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN or ladder.

Women’s Metro 2 Gold v Dellas

We went into the game against Dellas with a little trepidation as we were down to only 11 players with no Michelle, Kris or Shaz, who had to umpire us, so on short notice I called on Chelsea Heath and Issy Cracknell to help us out in the forward line.

To make matters worse we were expecting Dellas to rock up with only a kicking fullback but to our dismay they had a fully kitted up goalie.

Dellas slotted a goal in the first 10 minutes but to our credit we did not drop our heads and we fought hard and went to half time with 1 goal down.

So after bit of a pep talk we went back on the field and Chelsea was running amok as centre forward with lots of forays into our attacking D, then she did a cracker of a pass in front of goal and Rachel who was on her post (she owns the left post apparently) closed her eyes, squealed and swiped it into the goal. It happened so fast everyone just looked at each other in amazement. Jaz narrowly missed getting a goal by a hairs breadth.

This really lifted us and we played well with lots of passing and team work and then Chelsea had another shot at goal and one of Dellas defenders helped her out and kindly put it in the goal for us.

Now we were 1 up and knew we just had to hold.

Erica, Tilly and Kate were under the pump in the last 5 minutes of the game with Dellas trying really hard to even the score but we remained steadfast in defense and were very happy to hear the final whistle. Kate did some amazing saves diving every which way, and the clearances from Tilly and Erica were top form.

Kaylish, Jaz, Claire, Rachel, Chelsea and Issy were brilliant up front working together to get the ball in our attacking D many times.

Sarah, Claire, Steph and Annie worked hard across the half back line and a special mention goes to Lou who played the whole game as Centre half back without a break, hitting the ball long to our forwards on many occasions and taking on Dellas’ star forward who had 2 elbows and was not afraid to use them.

So very proud of the girls today.

A very big thank you to Shaz for giving up her game to umpire us, she did a fantastic job. Final Score 2-1

Match report:

Metro 4 vs. Blades

2nd July

Result 2-1

We ventured out to Beechboro down a few numbers this week. Andy filled in as goaly with Bono away and we could only field 12 with Troy and Brian away as well – so lots of running was in store this week as our opposition had 15 to rotate through .

In the first half we displayed good spirit and some nice combinations up forward. Kurtis and Cam were combining very well down the right and some nice crosses were made into the circle. Dave and Ben were offering targets inside the circle and had some shots on goal but we couldn’t put one away. Ryan came on at left wing and provided some run and was playing his best game for the team this year.

Score 0-0 at half time despite the Hawks having most of the play. Our ball movement and locking the ball in our attacking area was working well – just a matter of getting reward for effort.

Into the second half and Kyle, Carl and Owen were controlling the half line well leaving Gibbo,  Andy and I not a lot of work to do. Owen was generating some good run down the right and helping create some chances. About 15mins in Rusty got the ball into the circle and cracked home a great goal. Not long after that Cam got the ball from Owen and from a very tight angle had the goalie make a save. Ina bit of a scramble the goalie back footed it in and we were 2 up with 10mins to play.

We relaxed a bit and the ball made it into our circle we left a player free. Andy made a good save 1 on 1 but the ball just crossed the line after a scramble and it meant the last 5 mins were a bit more tense than they should have been.  We held on quite easily to take  a well deserved win.

All up a very good team effort today with some really good ball movement happening.  Plenty to keep working on though so lets get down to training as we approach the Challenge Cup.

No rain, Hale and we didn’t quite shine….

By Macca. Captain Vets 0/50

Our games against Hale over the past few seasons have traditionally been arm wrestles, similar to the Sydney Swans/ West Coast battles of 05/06 with close finishes. Whilst we got the jump on them in Round One, we knew we were not going to get any latitude off them this time around.

We welcomed back Hammond from injury and went in at almost full tilt. We started slowly with Hale applying pressure early and thus it took us time to find rhythm and get into game mode. Our forwards Darren, Hammond, Mike and Phil were making opportunities going forward but these were not translating on the scoreboard and we didn’t look as smooth as have been in previous games. Hale broke through early in the half with a questionable goal despite goalkeeper Steve Airey’s strong presence. Jeff Anderson and Baz  combined strongly down the left side to provide clearances and feed a keen and active forward line. Shaun and Brian provided good opportunities on their wings and Geoff was amongst the thick of it endeavouring to create opportunities.

John Ellis was his usual relentless self, chasing down opponents and intercepting opposition passes. Frosty worked tirelessly to create forward opportunities, including a valiant effort off the ground at one point! Rob showed his versatility in several positions across the ground to aid the cause but suffered an ankle injury late in the game. Lloyd joined us after first half umpiring duties and immediately offered another positive avenue on the right going forward.

We managed to reply with a goal from Darren and that inspired us to keep greater possession in the second half. We played a better brand of hockey and had our opportunities to convert but Hale continued to respond, finding the net through a deft deflection. We finished the game with us going down 2-1.

Best Players:Baz, Darren and Steve

Thanks:Lloyd and Hammond for sharing umpiring duties; the Hale players for the high level of sportsmanship shown throughout the game and the fellowship after.

PLAYERS REVIEW 23RD JULY-TEAMS MUST START PREPARING

Southern River vs. JTA

Masters 40’s

2/7/2011

“Rely”

By Barry Romaro

Today’s game was played under cold conditions with the threat of rain, we started the game well with an early goal through Trenty and JTA were shocked as the last time we played them they beat us easily. We added to that tally just before the half time break and we were well on top of JTA. The second half saw JTA kick a goal (yes kick a goal) great honesty and Rob let them know it! Then not long after they evened up the score with another goal. We still maintained control of the game as we had all day but some bizarre umpiring decisions kept going against us. With about ten minutes to go JTA scored another gaol through a terrible decision that saw us with only one defender against three JTA players who took the free early and well in front of the correct place and slotted in a disappointing goal. With only a few minutes to go we threw the kitchen sink at them missing three close chances before Arthur tapped in a handy goal from the post position. In the end it was a good result for us against the second side in the completion but unfortunately we can’t “rely” on our skills and honesty alone to win a game.

The final tally for the game was three goals each draw.

Goals: Colin Stewart 1, John Trent 1, Arthur Hodges 1
