(In honour of Kylie Minogue’s visit to Perth)

There were no TEARS ON MY PILLOW after this game even though it was a loss. It was a hard fought game. We begged the umpires to just GIVE ME A LITTLE MORE TIME as Curtin had scored in the last 2 minutes and we had the ball in our D. It was not to be.

I WOULDN’T CHANGE A THING with this team as everyone played a great game.  We just need to remember to talk to each other and I don’t mean GET OUTTA MY WAY, I mean saying mine, yours etc. We had our opportunities in the goal circle, some that left us SPINNING AROUND as they were saved or we didn’t hit the target.

We missed out on a CELEBRATION but we CAN’T BEAT THE FEELING that another win is getting CLOSER. Let’s keep the LOCO-MOTION, stay PHYSICAL (not you Miranda) and ALL I SEE will be more wins.

After the game we could all BREATHE again as everyone was STILL STANDING, not like the forward who Miranda ‘accidentally’ tripped in a “going for the ball” tackle!

We were certainly glad there was NO MORE RAIN especially ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS. (Well afternoon actually).

WHERE HAS THE LOVE GONE? Is what we asked John, WHERE IS THE FEELING? HAND ON MY HEART I think we earnt it back with this game.

SR MM 50-3 Hawkeye Report for 25 June 2011- By Macca

The stage was set… the team was aware that we were up against the #1 team in the division, we were going in on top of our game and there was a possibility the Challenge Cup could come home to the Hawks.

And then it happened….
We were hit with a couple of crucial late withdrawals and added to key players already injured or unavailable, the task got a whole lot bigger. Despite that, we were determined to put our best team on the day on the park and give it our best shot. We lined up and after Macca’s gaff (cheering Willeton not Melville) we set to work. Melville had brought their A-game to the table and immediately we were under pressure to hold and put together some forward structure. We had opportunities to make inroads to the circle but the Melville defence were resolute. ‘Skip’ Nicholas, Darren Mills and Brian Coppendale were working hard up front. Jeff Anderson had a high work rate checking the Melville attack, supported by Lloyd and Rob across the back line and supported well by Geoff (Gas).

After some inspired keeping by Steve Airey, the backs found themselves beaten by a good offensive and Melville took the first goal. To our credit we kept our heads up, maintained a contest and went into the half-time break 0-1. We challenged ourselves to re-focus and called on the forwards to create more opportunities from the 16 yard hits in order to help crack the Melville Wall.

The second half was torrid. We tried to match offensives but the pressure Melville was mounting on full- backs Macca and Frosty was evident. Our normal game suffered and we were pushed into a style which was very low percentage. After another early goal by the opposition, Skip and Darren combined brilliantly to put us on the scoreboard and maintain some pride. Shaun made a good contribution during a busy period. John Ellis worked tirelessly right across the park and in the short corners to disrupt Melville. Steve continued with his great keeping form and leadership to try and keep us in the contest. The team kept their heads up despite the pressure but the quality of opposition, injuries and our lack of firepower took its toll and Melville broke through with another two goals to record a 4-1 win.

Best Players: Steve Airey, Bryon McLaughlin, Dave Frost
Goal Scorers: Darren Mills

Thanks:
To a side who had the courage to fight it out to the end; to Club President John Heath for taking time out of a busy schedule to support us with quality umpiring; Hammond D’Souza for assisting me with player changes; Paul Dixey for his help early in the game and to the Hawks crowd who came from the turf games to support us .

Southern River vs Willetton

Masters 40’s

26/6/2011

“Whisper”

By Barry Romaro

Today we travelled to Trevor Gribble reserve to play the league leader Willetton Reds. Willetton have one three out of the last four premierships in this grade and we all knew this would be a tough game. We did our first warm up lap of the year such was the importance of this game. The game started at a frenetic pace with Willetton on the receiving end of some great attacking moves by us but just like last week we did not put our goals away. Over the first fifteen to twenty minutes we attacked with gusto and Willetton had a few chances of scoring through counter attacks. We put away our first goal after our midfield carried the ball deep into the circle then ran the base line and dished off a past for the goal hungry Trenty, who easily slotted away a fine goal. This only sparked Willetton into a frenzy of attacking runs and if it was not for Rob in goals they may have slotted away two or three goals. Eventually Willetton scored an equalising goal just before the half time break. After half time we went back on the attack and we slotted away one disallowed goal and eventually Gary chimed in with a great reverse stick goal to take us two one up. With only seven minute to go Willetton managed six short corners in a row and with a little luck on their side they slotted away the equalising goal. Both sides battled it out for the last seven minutes but the end result was a two all draw. The “Whisper” after the game was that we are the side to watch out for come the business time of the season. I can’t finish this article without a mention of Brad Georges “Little Red Boots” they kept our President very entertained throughout the game. Thanks again for the great support that we received from the great crowd that attended our game.

TARTS ON TOUR 2011

The Annual Ladies end of season trip is on again.

Last year we flew to Singapore and cruised the Malacca Strait.
This year the proposed destination is Bangkok departing around October 27 (long weekend).
The intended cost is approximately $1000 for 4 nights including airfares and accommodation.
If you are interested see Lou Spear

Ed. This is not a Club arranged event. All enquires to Lou. I believe the ladies have a great time each year and this is the third year they have organised it………….

That’s it for this week. Keep those reports coming. If any team is a chance of a Challenge Cup berth I will keep you informed. All the best of luck for the weekend’s series of matches. Don’t forget the “free drink” promotion being run each Thursday night and the Saturday Alfrerso for home games. The response to these events have been great each week. Lets keep it going !!!!!!

PRESIDENTS REPORT

My report will start on a very big positive this week. It is good to see the attendance at the club on Thursday nights and Saturday afternoons. The food on Thursday night for dinner is something to behold and special thanks must go out to Kris Dixie and her willing band of helpers.Dont forget the free drink draw every 15 minutes from 8-00pm onwards.

The Alfresco was pumping on Saturday last week even with the poor weather. It’s great to see all supporting it. The atmosphere on Saturdays is something we can all be proud of and other club’s quite often comment on our great setup!! The way our members are continuing to support it is very pleasing. Well done to Janson and Ports.

Last week there was an announcement in the Hawkeye relating to playing uniforms and requirement  to wear them during games.
Now if you don’t have the correct shirt shorts and socks you may not be considered for selection this week. I have informed the captains of this policy so make sure you the correct attire this week. Shirts, sox and shorts/skirts/skorts.
The club paid its first set of moieties to HWA last week and now we are clear for another couple of weeks. That doesn’t mean you don’t need to pay up with your fees. Paying them makes the Treasurer happy and keeps him smiling cause as we all know a happy Tres makes for a stress free Pres.

Don’t forget to organise your acts for the Players Review on the 23rd July. As they say in the classics-rehearse rehearse rehearse !!!!!!!!
We are looking to purchase a Plasma TV for the clubrooms and have introduced a novel way to raise the funds. Fines are now being enforced for players and will be issued for the usual dumb things. A Fines master will be allocated to each team and at $2 per fine the outlay is not huge, but you will be surprised at how quickly the money adds up……. Remember the money is going towards something tangible and all members WILL benefit from the money. Get behind the idea and have a bit of fun at the same time.
Good luck to all this week especially those trying to secure a spot in the Challenge Cups……GO HAWKS
PRES-John (Heathy) Heath.

 MATCH REPORTS
Womens Provisional 1

OK this week we played the bottom side in Canning
The team ventured down to Rockingham with a few of the ladies getting lost on the way(Jacinta). To say the buildup before the game was bad was an understatement. We were just wandering around doing what we wanted, not warming up, hence we had two injuries during the first 5 minutes and not to mention our full back breaking our centre half’s toe !!!!.Next time we will warm up and stretch wont we ladies. OR ELSE. :)
Canning came at us really hard and dominated us from the word go and it wasn’t long before they put one on the board via a huge kick from their striker. Umpire must have been unsighted !!
They had it all over us through the first half and we were struggling to maintain any control over the play.
Half time couldn’t come quick enough.. A half time spray that would make any footy coach proud ensued for the next three minutes till i ran out of bad language and bad manners..
The girls seem to respond better but not having a bench really hurt. Legs got tired.. As the Coach I needed to inject some fresh legs into the game to give some of the ladies a well earned rest. Chelsea Heath happened to be at the game and offered to be on the bench for the second half. It wasn’t long before we were awarded a short corner and a great shot saw it beautifully deflected by Paula into the net. The score at this time was 2-1 to Canning with another dubious goal.
We then set about leveling the score card through a great defensive game from Rae who seemed to be able to find our forwards with some clever passing. Jess Heath was on fire and took it up to Canning at every opportunity. However they seemed to think they were playing footy and bashed the crap out of some of our forward. In some instances, even resorting to double teaming.
Unfortunately we weren’t good enough on the day and came away with a loss.
Now for the truth….There may be some changes this week in an attempt to return to the winning list. We were too slow and couldn’t hit targets, second to the ball, struggled to trap and generally didnt want to work.
Make sure you listen for the changes at Thursday training..Well done to Rae and Jess for great fighting efforts and to Chelsea for filling in at such short notice.

John(Heathy) Heath.

Southern River vs Hale

Masters 40’s

18/6/2011

“Carefree”By Barry Romaro

Today’s game saw us playing off against Hale to retain third spot if Hale beat us they would move from fourth spot into third spot pushing us into fourth spot. The game started with Hale doing all the attacking and our defence had to absorb seven short corners in a row. After about fifteen minutes we settled down into our best attacking moves. We had many missed opportunities from then to the half time break, but we could not buy a goal. The second half was nothing like the first, both teams were trying to assert themselves but a chosen few within the Hale side had decided to continually do it outside the rules of hockey. Although our umpires for the day were good and mostly consistent they took a “carefree” attitude to the blatant dirty tactics that resulted in bad blood between our sides. Hale scored the first and only goal of the day at about the fifteen minute mark of the second half against the run of play and we battled on for the rest of the game but we just had one of those days where we could not score goals. The end result was a one nil win to Hale. We then all enjoyed the fantastic atmosphere in the famous alfresco and soon forgot about the games result. Thanks again for the great support that we received from the great crowd that attended our game its Willetton next week and they are top of the table so we will have to put our best game on. GO HAWKS!

Metro 4 vs. Subs18th June

Result 2-2

A wet day today for the first time this season and we took on an undermanned Subs outfit. Their goalie was late and they were still 1 short after he finally arrived. Gibbo was back this week but Ravi and Kurtis are still out with injuries. We started slowly and seemed to think our extra numbers would do the work for us. Subs were playing a smart game, relying on long balls out of defense to a high forward line and we didn’t adjust well. After 10 mins a deflection near the top of the circle made its way past Bono and we were one down. We responded with a bit more fight but had trouble penetrating the Subs defense that was trapping well and we didn’t work our way around them.

After some better ball movement and some short corners saved by Subs, Troy got the ball in the circle and slotted it home. Back to level but we were not playing well and near the end of the first half after a goal mouth scrimmage, we conceded another one. We really needed to rev up in the 2nd half as the work rate wasn’t there in the first half. The 2nd half was a struggle with the Hawks attacking but being kept out. Kyle was shutting the right hand side down from left half, and some of the younger guys in Cam, Brian and Andy were providing some drive down the right. Our combinations improved and we started to move the ball much better, but still couldn’t penetrate. With only a minute left we forced a short corner, and Troy tried the push rather than a hit with great success. The equalizer came closely followed by the end of the game.

We were lucky to get a point after the effort today, so let’s hope we switch back on next game (after the umpiring bye). Best players

CLUB UNIFORM

The Southern River Hockey Club has a strict uniform policy that applies to all players representing this great club. Since our inception we had always worn our uniform with pride and to date all players have abided with our uniform requirements. As a reminder all players are required to have:

A)   Club sox

B)   Club shorts/skirts/skorts

C)   Club shirt.

THE PLAYING SHIRT IS TO BE THE OFFICIAL CLUB SHIRT-NOT A MYALUP SHIRT.

Next year the club is taking an iniative with regard to uniform clashes with other clubs.

As of 2012 all Hawks players are required to have the club alternative strip as a part of their match day attire. The shirt is a white version of our navy blue strip. This shirt is available this year and are for sale from the bar. Get in early and avoid the rush next year

MATCH REPORTS

Mens Provisional 2 Gold Match Report for Round 7

The Round 7 match for the Southern River Ones team was always going to be a tough game. The Hawks have had an impressive start, only going down in one game. The opposition, Hale, on the other hand have fought hard to be in the top 4 looking to improve their 50% win rate.

This week the Hawks had home ground advantage, which the author of this report would like to add a special thanks to all the supporters who came down, and knew that a win was required to keep their challenge cup hopes alive. There were slight team changes with Mickey Burns and Dan Mckeown being promoted to the ones; Mickey in Full Back and Dan given the tough job of standing between the goal posts.

Losing the toss at the start of the game may have seem like a slow start, but the hawks jumped into action as soon as Hale played the ball showing the visitors why the Hawks have dominated the season so far. Throughout the first half the Hawks had their chances, including some impressive work from attacking midfielder Andy Smyth to help set up the forwards in the circle. The first goal of the game eventually came when Rexy Hoskins, received the ball in the circle and staring in the face of the keeper, unselfishly passed onto Jonny Lanzon on the post easily slotting the ball away. That would be the only goal for the first half.

Being one nil up into the second half the Hawks continued to gnaw away at the Hale goals. It took almost 15 minutes until Southern River doubled their lead after Ross Smith skilfully dribbled the ball towards the centre of the circle, passed to the left to Connor Cracknell inside the circle, who then put the ball in front of a sliding Jonny Lanzon on the right side. Now two goals to nil the Hawks let their guard down for a short period which Hale took advantage of by being awarded a short corner and making the most of it by putting the ball away to reduce the Hawks lead.

With the score a freighting 2-1 in the Hawks favour, the Hawks built up the tempo looking for the third crucial goal to ensure victory. The third goal eventually came when Ross Smith once again skilfully played the ball into the circle then thinking about taking a tomahawk shot thought twice and unselfishly played the ball to Andy Smith who was waiting on his left. Andy didn’t need to be told what to do next, instead he instinctively smashed the ball into the goals securing the Hawks victory. The Hawks win 3-1.

After seven games the Hawks now have five wins and one loss. Next week they take on Peel, also with five wins and one loss, where the winner will almost certainly be invited to participate in the Challenge Cup against Wasps. For those who want to support, the game will be in Mandurah Saturday afternoon.

(Movie Theme)

The TWILIGHT SAGA began at 7pm on Sunday evening at Melville Turf.  THE DILEMA, with 15 players, was who to play in what position. With NO STRINGS ATTACHED, that problem was sorted very quickly. Alas we were to be BRIDES MAIDS once again as we could not snatch the win. With a score of 1 nil at half time it was a bit of a SUCKER PUNCH when 3 more were put into the net. I am sure we heard I AM NUMBER 4, as their final goal was scored. Our FAST FIVE forwards (a variety of people) tried valiantly to score throughout the game but could not get a score on the card. THE 3 MUSKETEERS, our half line, (again a variety of people) worked hard all game to mark players and force the ball forward but to no avail. A positive from this game is the TRUST that was shown among players.  Many players were THOR at the end of the game as they worked extra hard and they may have a HANGOVER 2 or more as some may have drowned their sorrows. Not one to bag an umpire but a few of us wanted to KUNG FU PANDA 2 on both umpires at various times throughout the game. Maybe a GREEN LANTERN may have helped them see the game a bit better. Next week we will be BREAKING DAWN as we play at 11.30am at Uni Turf.

Match report:

Metro 4 vs. Harlies 11th June

Result 0-1

A tough match was anticipated against Harlies who are vying with us for top spot on the ladder. We had a few out this week due to various injuries and commitments with 5 guys missing from the normal line up (Gibbo,  Ravi,  Kurtis, Bitters and Ryan)   We recruited Ben Armstrong and Brad George into bolster the ranks both of whom played very well and helped us out of a hole. THANKS GUYS.

Just before the start of the game Troy had a wardrobe malfunction and lost his shorts. Both sides had to be subjected to the view of Troy’s meat and two veg encased in skins on the bottom half as he bravely played on without the shorts. Not sure if this put us or Harlies off the most but why didn’t someone take a photo for this weeks “Hawkeye”??  Probably best for all concerned that it wasn’t taken.

Thanks to Tash who made the necessary repairs and got his shorts back on where they belonged.

This game was a tough encounter from the outset. With many of the normal crew missing and players out of their normal positions we took a little while to settle down. Harlies came out hard and really dominated for the first 20 mins of the half.  Fortunately Bono and Kyle down back in particular held up really well to the constant pressure and despite conceding a few short corners we kept them out. After a while the game evened out and we started to exert some pressure back onto them.

Some dubious umpiring led to short fuses among both teams and it was a good tight and very feisty contest through to the half time break.

We had managed to maintain really good pressure on their ball carriers in the first half and needed to keep up the effort in the 2nd half.

The second half started like the first had finished with heaps of pressure applied and plenty of banter between the two teams. Some very indecisive umpiring didn’t help everyone’s mood and some flare ups were inevitable.

Despite this the standard of hockey was very good from both teams. About 10 mins in we conceded a goal from a fast break but responded very well from that point on. After absorbing a lot of pressure early we really dominated the last 20 mins and we were very unlucky not to put a goal away which we deserved to do. 1 all would have been a fitting result.

We came up just short in the end but it was an excellent team effort today where everyone played their part with tackling and chasing a feature from every line.

Southern River vs Melville

Masters 40’s

11/6/2011

“Meds”

By Barry Romaro

Today’s game was played under quite cool conditions at Melville’s home ground. We started the game a bit shaky not playing our style of game and rushing with our passes. Melville had us on the ropes for at least the first fifteen minutes. It took a few personnel changes on the field along with some position changes to rectify the problem. We linked up better making the opposition chase us consistently and we tested their fitness. Our first goal came from a great piece of work by John Gradisen who after receiving a great pass from the midfield he managed to slot a flicked shot on goals to beat the keeper through a lot of congestion. The second goal of the day was spectacular, we had moved the ball from the centre of the field out to Arthur Hodges who stepped into the circle and slotted a fine goal to take us two goals to nil up on Melville. The tides were turned on us when a scrappy bit of play allowed Melville to penetrate our circle and then the ball was lifted dangerously across the face of the goals at head height just missing chippy and was swatted into the goals by a Melville player well above his shoulders, but the umpire allowed it to be recorded as a goal anyway. We then spent the next fifteen minutes attacking relentlessly to no avail we even had a goal disallowed. In the end the game was fought out to the last second with Melville throwing the kitchen sink at us but we held on for a great win. Most of us had a number of bruises aches and pains and most of us were heading for the “meds’ in our bags. The final tally for the game was a two to one win to us. I would like to thank our great crowd of supporters who came down and gave us rousing support from the side line.

THE STORY OF THE COLOURED CARDS

Whilst we all make light of the over zealous umpires with the pocket full of coloured cards, it is important to remember the real consequences of being awarded a RED card during a match.

HockeyWA deem the awarding of a RED card during a match as a serious misdeameanour and as such insist the offending player is suspended from his club’s/team’s next official fixture. This is a directive not a suggestion and the Southern River Hockey Club is bound to abide by the suspension and NOT select the offending player.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

THE AWARDING OF ANY CARD DURING A MATCH IS NOT TAKEN LIGHTLY BY THE CLUB AND WE HAVE OUR OWN PENALTIES AND THESE WILL BE ENFORCED.

THAT’S IT TILL NEXT WEEK

We don’t mind a good laugh at all, just not too crass ok. There will be a light dinner- hot roast beef, rolls, gravy and salad.

So please get your crew together and get started!! It should be a great night if everyone get behind it!

Any queries or if you want help to sort out an act just see Kris Dixey.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

IT IS A COMPULSORY FUNCTION AND THE FUN WILL BE ENDLESS

THANKS FOR THE GREAT RESPONSE FOR THE CALL FOR TEAM REPORTS. AS YOU WILL SEE WE HAVE A LOT OF READING TO DO !!!!!

Southern River vs. Suburban

Masters 40’s

28/5/2011

“Libra”

By Barry Romaro

Glorious weather was the order of the day and it was delivered, all we had to do was entertain the big crowd in Janson’s ‘alfresco”. Today we were opposed to Suburban hockey club who played off in the finals last year in division two. We were prepared for a tuff game and we got it. We practised this week at training to shorten our game and we managed to do that for most of our game. The first fifteen minutes saw us defending resolutely but it felt like Suburban were going to break through at any time. To our defence’s credit they kept a clean sheet today when under some extreme pressure. We attacked well all day and wore down our opponents with our short quick passing and we were very unlucky not to have scored another six goals but it really was not Trenty’s day. When Gary converted a rebounded shot on goals by Arty shouts of ‘Libra” could be heard around the ground such was our exuberance at finishing off Suburban, with them now having no chance of beating us with only ten minutes of time left. Fianal score was a 3 nil win to the mighty Master Hawks.

I would like to thank our great crowd of supporters who came down to the club and gave us great support from the side line in us beautiful warm weather.

Umpiring was not up to the standard we as a club provide!

Must learn to play on anyway.

Pass from Kaylish lead to Tiffany scoring a great goal.

It sadly was our only goal.

Refuse to count the goal I scored because it was into their net!!

Extreme heat did not help us at all!

Some good passing did occur

We just could not finish the task and score the goals

End result was 5-1 in their favour

Rush tackling did not help us

Excitement in the D when a Reds player wanted to take on Miranda!!

Creating more scoring opportunities is what we needed

Running more is what some of us could improve on. (Me especially)

A big thanks to our supporters.

Pub or bar open may have helped us get over the loss.

Kaye (Captain)

Match report:

Metro 4 vs. Fremantle

28th May

Result 1-0

Back on home turf this week against an old foe from seasons past.  Many good games have been played by Metro 3 and 4’s teams over the years against Fremantle so we were expecting a tough game, and we were not disappointed. With some senior players in Rusty and Troy missing this week we had some positional changes for the 3rd week in a row with Cam starting at centre forward, Gibbo moving up to inner and Andy slotting in to right half.

The game started well with the Hawks dominating the play but not creating many clear chances or short corners. The ball was being passed around through the fullback line to the halves and space has being created up forward. Kyle at fullback continues to improve and combined nicely with Andy at right half. Ravi shut out his wing and Carl was controlling the game in the centre.

After about 20 minutes and following some fine back tackling pressure from the forwards and Cam in particular the ball was passed to Owen who cracked in a great shot from the angle across the goalie at about waist height giving him no chance. The forwards continued to create space with good running from Curtis and Brian supplementing Owen, Dave, Ben and Ryan.

1-0 up at half time and we looked to consolidate our position. Freo came out strongly and put plenty of pressure on our back half. The defence stood up well and cleared a number of short corners before shots could be taken. We created a number of fast breaks with Curtis in particular flying down the right wing but couldn’t get the ball into a scoring position. Unlike previous weeks we couldn’t create short corners either and we unable to get a winning lead through the extra goal we needed.

Despite lots of pressure we managed to keep Freo out and came away with a well deserved win, albeit a fairly scrappy one!

A good team effort today with contributions from everyone.  Thanks to big crowd that came along to enjoy the game.  Looking  forward to seeing everyone down to training on Thursday night.  Next game vs Harlies away on the 11th  at 2.00pm in a top of the table clash!

Best players

  1. Carl Vanderputt
  2. Owen DeSnoo
  3. Curtis Cheney

Southern River U11 Blue  1 defeated Dale 0

3rd game in and the U11 blues are really starting to gel well together. This was a good game to watch with players showing real determination to score. It was good to see everyone trying to keep their sticks on the ball and pushing around the opposition not always going for the big hit. Everyone played really well, Madison was relentless in attack and it was only a matter of time before she scored. Emma did some lovely clearances from defence to the waiting forwards and James, Riley, Cody, Kayla, Prempal, Ruby, Zach and Asees also had chances to score, even Alex (our steadfast backman) had a run up forward. Jordan was fabulous in goals, saved a few close calls and has benefited immensely from the coaching she received from Miranda last week. Well done on our first win for the season. A big thanks to Gail, Miranda, Chippy, Phil and all the parents and supporters for their help and encouragement and a big big big thanks to Greg for all his help.

UNDER 13’S J7/8 C

Under 13’s Hawks are back for another season.

With six players from last years Grand Final team and six new players coming into the side it looks like we should be in for a good year.

Under 13’s Hawks are made up of the Gail (Coach), Jade (Team Manager), Dylan (Goal Keeper), Jade & Katelyn (Full Backs), Jordan, Jessica & Daniel (Half Backs), Brianna, Rebecca, Isobel, Alisha, Tayla, Jennifer and Britney (Forwards).

The season started with a home game against Canning, it took the Hawks the first half to get into the swing of playing hockey again.  The teams seemed evenly matched as the ball was going from one end of the field to another, with many short corners being awarded neither sides defense letting up. Canning scored the first goal but it did not take long for the Hawks to re focus and scored the following 2 goals to win the game 2 to 1. As a spectator it was a very exciting game to watch.

The second round was a home game against Mazenod, it looked like Mazenod were giants compared to the Hawks but this didn’t seem to phase the Hawks as they went in fighting.  The kids shared the ball around and the defense were on fire. They stopped Mazenod from crossing the half line on  most occasion and when there was an  opportunity they sent the ball forward enabling the Hawks to score 5 goals to 1. The Hawks had multiple goal scorers which meant that they were playing in there positions and ensured that the win was a great team effort.

Third round was an away game against Kwinana again they were a tall team but this didn’t seem to have a negative effect on the Hawks.  The kids were off to a great start with the Hawks scoring a goal in the first few minutes of the game and again another goal just before half time. It seemed that the team listened to the coach at training. As soon as they got in the D they took a shot at goals which resulted in 2 goals.  In the second half they began to understand what the coach meant about going wide instead of sending the ball through the centre. The kids had a free left field forward of the halfway line instead of going straight towards goal they switched play to the right side of the field going around the Kwinana players and sending the ball into the D where a shot was taken and resulted in a goal. The Hawks won 3 goals to 0.

Round four saw the fixtures changed at the last minute which meant that the Hawks were playing at home against Kwinana.  As the kids had beaten Kwinana the previous they went into the game confident that they would have an easy win.  The game started off slow and the Hawks didn’t seem to be hungry for the ball although they did score a goal in the first half.  Gail must have given the kids a real gee up at half time, as when they ran onto the field they looked a completely different side. In the second half the Hawks went on a goal scoring frenzy with six different players scoring goals. Final score Hawks 7 to Kwinana 0.

You can see that the kids thoroughly enjoy playing hockey and have great fun playing on Saturdays, also it’s great to see the parent and families supporting the kids on game day.

WELL DONE !!!!!!!

Match Report – Southern River Masters 50s -v- Kalamunda – 28 May 2011

By Lloyd

Running on the back of 5 straight wins we approached the game with some apprehension given that we were still missing the services of Bobby Frigrado and for the first time this season skipper Macca due to work commitments.  The game was also approached with the knowledge that Frosty was nursing a hamstring/sore heal he injured when we played Blades in the last game.  On the plus side we welcomed the return of Brian Coppendale from a five week holiday overseas.

Kala are one of those sides who always give us a run for our money and this game proved to be no different.

Courtesy of the injury, Frosty umpired the first half and controlled the game well with some able assistance from the ever willing Barry Romaro.

We started the game with Jeff Ando and Barry Vanderputt playing at full back and evergreen Hammond D’Souza holding the center half position.  Rob (ice hockey champ) Brezovski gallantly agreed to play the left half position vacated by Jeff and played a sound game.

It was a warm afternoon with our midfield having a lot of the play but unfortunately we were not able to inflict any damage on the scorecard – despite appearing to have more opportunities than the Kala forwards.  On the other hand the few opportunities Kala had were resolutely blocked by Steve Airey.

We went into the half time break with a nil all score still confident of finishing the game with a win.  We made a couple of changes bringing on Frosty at fullback, with Baz playing at center half, freeing up Hammond into the forward line.  Unfortunately during a scrimmage Kala managed to score a goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

The team rallied and despite several promising moves could not score that magic equalizing goal.  The game ended with a one nil loss with the team maintaining a confident outlook and looking forward to our next game against WASPS following a general bye.

The best players were Barry Vanderputt, Rob Brezovski and Steve Airey.

Special thanks to Barry Romaro who umpired the whole game and to Frosty and Paul Dix for sharing a half each.

DON’T FORGET THE ALFRESCO SATURDAY AFTERNOON…..

THANKS TO GORDON FOR LINE MARKING EACH WEEK !!!!!
