VETS OVER 50

Blades were the first top 4 side we had encountered. We were without Bobby Figredo due to injury and venturing out on a spongy Altone Park surface… anything could happen.

We were shaky on opening as we settled into a different lineup. Baz Vanderputt started where he finished off last week and worked well with Lloyd as they made it look easy coming out of the back line. The ground was very inconsistent and provided some challenge to our basic skills. Hammond and Johnny Ellis were moving well into the forward line but the wily Blades defence were making us work for everything. After a short period, through a well earned short corner, Frosty made short work off a great pass from Baz and found the backboard (love it when a plan comes together!!)

We maintained our pressure but we were not the fluid unit we had been of recent weeks. Mike Nicholas slotted another goal shortly after and that’s when Blades and ourselves knuckled down and traded offensives. Darren was very quick on the wing and Rob found himself pushing on goal on several occasions. Jeff Anderson was back after a week away and seeing a lot of the play. We had our opportunities but could capitalise on some of our good efforts.

We went to half time not 100% happy with what we had done and hoping to call on our second half strengths to build on a 2-0 lead. Phil Hewton came in after a first half of umpiring and created a number of options in attack. Geoff A-S supported well in several exchanges and displayed some great touch with the 1-2′s. We lost Frosty early in the half so we re-arranged and found Blades in our defence more often than we cared for with some good work in the main by our halves and backs. Blades responded with a goal due to an unfortunate deflection off Macca, spoiling what had been a high-work day. Our team worked well overall, dispatching and mounting several attacks but we were unable to build on our score and finished the day 2-1 up.

Best Players: Baz, Hammond, Macca & Lloyd (tied)

Goals: Frosty, Mike

Thanks: to Phil and Johnny for taking up the whistle for a half each; to Frosty for his support (even whilst injured) as an umpire mentor.

Presidents Report

well it had to happen the women finally lost a game! not a bad run 45 straight without a loss…well done ladies i think that record will stay a long time with the club..

The result last week weren’t the best shall we say but never mind as long as we all enjoyed playing the game sometimes that’s all that really matters. the drink still tastes the same ,just sometimes iot takes a couple to get the bitter taste of defeat out of your system.

The bar is cranking and so is the kitchen so come down on Thursday night with the family and have a feed and drink with your team mates and don’t forget the junior games on Saturday for those who over did it on Friday the bacon and egg burgers are a dream recovery for a hangover.

I have been missing for the last couple of weeks due to illness and being away on holiday and it seems some people take it upon themselves to try and create mary hell while im away. The saying goes while the mouse is away the cats will play. Well im back now those cats will be pulled very swiftly into line…..enough said..

Thanks to all who took up the reins while i was away i will endeavor to buy a round when we are all together so again thanks guys and girls[ notice how i dont mention names as i will no doubt forget someone]

Just so we are all informed we are going to have our mid year function again soon and this year we will be having a players review combined with a roast beef and gravy roll night. All teams are required to put on two acts for the club so get together now and start planning your routines

and remember that alcohol makes your singing sound better, no macca you are still terrible…Arthur. you will never sound any better…GET PLANNING….

This week sees the return of four games at home so the alfresco will be pumping. so come down and support the guys and girls who are playing at home and most important support the bar.

This year we are having a great result as far as fees are concerned so please keep them coming in. better than having Barry chase you…

Guys and girls good luck for the weekend and as we always say winners are grinner and go the mighty HAWKS

 John Heath

Ladies Prov 1

What a turn around from last week. I was away for two games and the ladies had a draw and a loss. this broke the winning streak and created mary hell in the playing group

well guess what im back and the ladies are winning again..yep im taking credit for the win….we call it the fear factor….only joking. The ladies were fired up on Sunday and it showed that the loss must of hurt

that always makes a coach happy to see them working extra hard to redeem themselves. poor Vic Park they never stood a chance..3..0 A special thanks to Kelly who had to put up with Rexxy as my fill in coach…Im really sorry

Kel it wont ever go away in season again. Thanks Rexxy for doing it for me ..Didnt know it was possible to coach from the car park…This week sees us up against no one as we have an umpiring bye. you think i might read the fixtures before typing this

report…

Thanks Heathy

Ladies prov 3

He he he no report as they had to umpire. hang on if they were umpiring then why was i doing it on sat night at 7pm..one way of stopping me drinking.mmm smart thinking ladies

This week sees the ladies playing Aquinas at 1 on Sunday at Aquinas so if you feel inclined then come down and have a gander at some good hockey. side note.. these ladies are currently top of the ladder so they must be doing something right

Lastly welcome back Kaye from your soul searching trip i missed you as organizing all the ladies is a mission in itself……was that an ass soul searching trip….. you could of just come to my house as im always here….joke”

Good luck ladies on the weekend lets bring home the bacon.

Metro 2 ladies

hmmmm well lets just we had another bye and didnt we enjoy having the day off

This week sees the ladies at home playing against Kwinana at home at 2pm so be their or be square.

The ladies are struggling a bit where results are concerned and i do blame the coaching for that so i will endeavor to get the ladies up to speed asap.

Ladies keep up the good work and never stop trying. Annie is the most loveliest captain you could imagine but sometimes i think she will have no hair left at the end of the game

…..thats why i have none……..Good luck on the weekend

Thanks Heathy

ED’S NOTE: A BIT DISAPPOINTED AT THE LACK OF MATCH REPORTS EACH WEEK. WIN OR LOSE WE STILL WANT TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR GAMES. HAVENT SEEN ANY JUNIOR REPORTS YET. THESE ARE IMPORTANT TO THE CLUB AND TO THE PLAYERS THEMSELVES.

CONGRATULATIONS

Captain of the 2031 Lady Hawks, Maggie Rose George arrived safely and in true Hawks style without interfering with Thursday training or a Saturday match. She weighed in at a thumping 8lbs 8ozs (4kg) and a super model sized 54cm’s long when she made her debut in a home fixture at 3.05am on Wednesday 18th May. Clearly from the head circumference she is of George stock, however we are yet to hear any indication as to her opinion about umpires.  Georgie girl looks forward to a long association with the Hawks and with changing my diapers when I make it to 50′s Masters. Mum, Sarah is looking sensational and is preparing for a bikini shoot this weekend.

OVER 50 V DALE

We welcomed Dale to our ground knowing it was not going to be any easy match, despite their recent form. We were conscious of not letting our run of good form go to our heads but keen to build on our strengths.

The game opened with a high degree of spirit and Dale were quickly on the offensive. Our backs ( Macca and Frosty) were under a fair bit of pressure to clear and direct our game plan going forward. We worked our way back into the contest and looked for the high possession short game but found ourselves getting drawn into the Dale game style. It was a while before we scored, but not from a lack of energy from our forwards Hammond, Phil, Darren and Mike. Steve Airey was awesome with some spirited defending. There was good drive and opportunities created by halves Lloyd & Rob; the game went to half time with us scoring a second goal but we knew we had to take stock, reach down and get back to playing our game our way.

We came out looking to stamp our authority on the game early. Baz was back at full-back  (after first half umpiring duties) and his influence assisted to settle us down. We moved back into that successful game of ours which comes with patience and a concerted whole-of-team approach. Bobby was instrumental in setting up several players and Geoff (Gas) and Shaun found themselves in the action in and around the circle. Mike  and Phil found themselves benefitting from a lot of skilful work and capitalized with several scoring opportunities (we were sure to hear about it later from Mike!). Goals started to flow to the delight of the growing club crowd in “Janson’s Alfresco”. We maintained our intensity and ran out winners 6-0. Our strong second half came from a re-focused attitude and a better level of fitness (go figure!).

Best Players: Mike Nicholas, John ‘Bobby’ Figrado and Phil Hewton.

Goal Scorers: Mike Nicholas (3) Phil Hewton (2) Darren Mills. **It is to note Phil is the current leading goal scorer in MM 50-3!**

Thanks : To Baz  Vanderputt for umpiring the first half and to Dean Savage-Morton for umpiring the second. Also to the Dale players for the spirit in which the game was played and the fellowship afterwards at the bar.

“ WHAT A DEMOLITION “

With our fearless leader away this week, Rusty was given the chance to step up and lead the troops into battle. With the famous alfresco pumping. The boys were more than ready to take the field and dish out some punishment to the old foe that is Dale.

With Troy pushing back into fullback and Andrew stepping into a half back role that he looked like he was born to play. The pressure was put on Dale in an instant with the forward line looking hungry for that first goal and it wasn’t long before the rewards came with the sound of the backboard ringing. With great ball movement put to use in the first half the guys went into the half time break with a healthy 4 – 0 lead.

The 2nd half started with the guys still hungry for more goals and didn’t waste any time finding the back of the goals another 6 times before the final whistle sounded. Making the final score 10 – 0.  It was a great team effort by all the boys,  Well done guys.

A big thank you to Dean Savage Morton for umpiring our game!

Next week we head away to take on Kwinana at 2pm.

“DEPEND”

By Barry Romaro

We travelled to Mount Claremont today to match ourselves against the Soak’s side who have been playing in this second division for many years. We started quite well although we defended for at least the first five minutes before we got our selves together. We found ourselves attacking well for the next fifteen minutes making their goal keeper and defenders make five or more great saves. We even hit the wood work twice but alas we could not get on the score board. Then against the run of the game we turned the ball over at the top of our circle which resulted in a goal that hurt us deep to the bone. The game was still ours for the rest of the half only we started to struggle to get our run out of deep defence. We stopped for the half time break and spent it talking about how we could move the ball faster out of defence and to our defences credit they did this well in the second half. We let our backline down today by not manning up in defence and not back tackling and eventually Soak’s scored another goal via a penalty flick that Jamie had saved Pele style on the goal line. The game see sawed for the rest of the half and once again we had many chances to score goals but it was not our day. The game ended on a sour note with us concede ding a terrible goal with only five seconds on the clock. In the end our score line would have looked a lot worse if Rob Smyth had not made so many saves today we can ‘depend” on him to save so many shots but in the end we need to score a total that we can defend. We are slowly getting used to the higher standard of division two but we need to improve to get the elusive spot in the four to play finals again this year.

I would like to thank our great crowd of supporters who came down and gave us great support from the side line in cold blustery conditions.

Just a reminder that the traditional Thursday Night training socializing and teas are back. For the uniniated, we have team announcements, general information details and dinner. Please make an effort to come into the rooms after training each Thursday to enjoy the atmosphere !!!

LINE MARKING

I know this is repeating but I have to give a huge thanks to Geoff Foster, Chris( Ports ) Baker and Gordon for their remarkable assistance last week in making sure the lines were clear and concise for the opening set of junior fixtures on Saturday Morning.

VETS REPORT FROM PREVIOUS WEEK

Match Report – Southern River Masters 50s -v- Vic Park   30 April 2011

By Macca

This week after having notched up a great first up win against Hale, we welcomed 2010 Fairest and Best John ‘Bobby’ Figredo and Runner- up John Ellis back to the side for 2011.

The team went to work very early in the piece and through a series of good offensives realized an early goal. Vic Park replied with some deft touch and a very good goal, only narrowly beating goalie Steve Airey.

We knuckled down to the task and controlled the better portion of the play for the first half. There were solid contributions from backs Dave ‘Frosty’ Frost, Lloyd Jones, Jeff Anderson and Barry ‘Baz’ Vanderputt, allowing attack after attack to be mounted in our forward line. Mike Nicholas, Hammond D’Souza and John Ellis working tirelessly to create options across the ground. Rob Brezovski, Geoff ‘Gas’ Annett-Stuart and Shaun Keating provided some good initiatives across the half line and the wings. We went into the break at 2-1.

Bryon ‘Macca’ McLaughlin called on players to consolidate and use the resources of the team to our advantage. We knew a tenacious Vic Park had the skills and ability to upset us so we had to maintain momentum & stick to our game plan.

The second half developed into some very good hockey with both sides throwing their all at every scoring opportunity. Vic Park did not let us down and lifted their intensity, requiring some solid work by our team in defence to keep them away from scoring opportunities. Add to that some slick Hawk passing and possession hockey saw us build on our half time lead and take the game 4-1.

We still have a lot of work to do but the initial signs are promising.

Goal scorers:     Bobby Figredo (2), Mike Nicholas, Phil Hewton

Best Players:      Bobby Figredo, Barry Vanderputt, Dave Frost

Thanks:               Lloyd Jones and Jeff Anderson for sharing the umpiring duties for the game.

VETS REPORT 7/5/11

Match Report – Southern River Men’s Masters 50s -v- Harlies     7 May 2011

By Macca

Facing a Harlies team coming off two straight losses to start the season at their home ground was an equation which could not taken lightly. They sport a well versed group who have played together for many years and have the ability to take apart over-confident and ill-prepared sides.

The game opened at a very high tempo and despite several clever & creative plays from forwards Mike Nicholas, Hammond D’Souza, Phil Hewton and Rob Brezovsvski, goals were not immediately forthcoming. Bobby Figredo worked tirelessly at centre-half to create opportunities and open up the game but a wily Harlies defence responded to the task. John Ellis was tireless at inside right in covering the ground, intercepting and disrupting opposition plays. Half backs Jeff Anderson & Lloyd Jones provided great leadership by orchestrating forward initiatives, demonstrating cool heads and hot stick work! Fullbacks ‘Baz’ Vanderputt and Macca operated strongly, frustrating several Harlies attacks and showed deft touch and clearances in several pressure situations.

After a goalless first half we took stock & came back out with a mindset to stick to our game plan. Frosty came in at fullback for Baz and through some targeted surges & big hitting, assisted with a goal, brilliantly executed by Hammond. Shaun Keating and Geoff ‘Gas’Annett-Stuart continued to develop & show some good touch in forward positions.

Harlies responded with spirited challenges but were shut down and repelled by our dominant goalie Steve Airey who also kept us positioned and focused on where our opposition was. By this stage we were in full voice, imploring each other to play good strong possession hockey. Both teams traded offensives before Phil strengthened our position with a great second goal, cementing us at 2-0 and providing the straw which broke Harlies back.

Players from both clubs are to be commended for the standard of the game and the positive spirit in which it was played.

Our team is to be commended for their dedication, team spirit and input into what’s shaping as a very competitive side.

Goal scorers:     Hammond D’Souza, Phil Hewton

Best players :-    Phil Hewton; Bobby Frigrado and Hammond D’Souza

Thanks:               Dave Frost and Baz Vanderputt for blowing the whistle on the day.

Southern River vs. Whitfords

Masters 40’s

7/5/2011

“Beiber”

By Barry Romaro

Today’s game was played under quite hot conditions but once again we were able to field thirteen players which helped us overcome the oppressive conditions. We started the game attacking from the onset and within minute’s john Gradisen scored a great solo goal. Whitfords have been in division two for a couple of years after winning promotion from division three in 2007 and they are quite a good side. They trapped the ball well and moved it on to their forward line quickly giving our defence a very good workout. Most of our goals today came from counter attacks achieved from our back line stealing from their forward movements. We are finally starting to jell as a team but we need to work on mixing up our long and short game. Whitfords were very lucky to score a consolation goal when our defence failed to talk and we mucked up a ball we should of let go over the backline and they touched in a easy goal that Rob could not cover. Next week we have Colin in for his first game and we should be at near full strength for the first time this year and we will need to be as we are playing Uni Associates who are a very strong side. The final tally for the game was four a goals to one win to us. Rumour has it that Trenty had to slip away quickly after the game to get to the Justin Beiber concert, all the boys do hope you enjoyed the concert Trenty. I would like to thank our great crowd of supporters who came down and gave us rousing support from the side line.

Match report:  7th May  MENS GRASS 1

Metro 4 vs. Lakers

Result 4-2

A really good win this week with some much improved conversion work up forward. We controlled the game quite well and created good opportunities to score and forced a number of saves from the Wasp keeper.

Ravi played his best game for the season to date by cutting out their right wing and combinations with Carl and the forwards was very good.

About 20 mins in after some pressure up forward the ball was passed to Owen in the circle who realized the goalie was out of position and calmly slotted in a back stick shot. It was a great goal and one you might see once a year (or so we thought)

1-0 at half time and we really wanted to push on and get some goals in the 2nd half. Some really good passages of play were put together in the 2nd half with ball movement from the back to the forward occurring with all players getting involved.

Early in the 2nd half Owen again found some space and with the goaly up off his line managed to replicate his first half effort. High 5’s all round and it gave us some extra energy to slot in another couple of goals from Troy and the goal scoring machine that is Ben Collier

We took our foot off the gas late in the game and conceded a couple of goals which was disappointing but still a well deserved victory.

A good team effort today with contributions from everyone. Still plenty to work on with earlier ball movement to free players a priority. Thanks to big crowd that came along to enjoy the game.  Looking  forward to seeing everyone down to training on Thursday night.  Next game vs Dale at home on the 14h at 3.30pm.

PRESIDENTS REPORT

Another week has passed and another fantastic set of results.Well done to all sides on your efforts and the fact that as yet no cards have been given out.So far so good. See what happens when I’m not playing but we still have Brad George playing……the bar is going strong with good support from all members and the kitchen is cranking out some good Tucker so make sure you support the club in any way you can. A big thanks go out to all of you who are doing the right thing by the club and working hard behind the scenes. We do appreciate all your efforts. This week sees the start of junior fixtures at the club so any body who wants to help out in the kitchen should have a chat to Cindy or Rexxy to see what is needed. Don’t forget the bacon and egg sandwiches are to die for so come down and watch the future of our club running around. Next week I won’t be here as I’m on holiday in Malaysia so their won’t be a report from
me and the bar takings will be less. I’m sure Artie will drink my share. Good luck to all on the weekend and good luck to all our juniors who take the field for the first time this season.

HAVE YOU NOTICED THE LINE MARKING ?????

HUGE THANKS TO GORDON FOR YOUR INVALUABLE ASSISTANCE. ESPECIALLY OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS. GORDON AND I(with the help of the GoGo mobile) HAVE INCREASED OUR GROUNDS FROM 2 TO 4 IN THE TWINKLING OF AN EYE……

Southern River vs Curtin Trinity

Masters 40’s

30/4/2011

“Poise”

By Barry Romaro

Todays game was played under quite hot conditions but those conditions were made easier by us being able to field thirteen players. We started the game brimming with confidence and it only took about seven minutes before we had the back board ringing. We linked up better this week making the opposition chase us consistently. Our first goal came from a penalty flick awarded to John Gradisen because his shot on goal was deliberately stopped by a defender with his hand. The second goal of the day was spectacular, we had moved the ball from the centre of the field out to John at left wing and he carried it from the half way line into the circle and along the base line and slotted the ball over a diving keeper. The majority of the game saw our midfield and forward line linking up very well with very good passing that allowed John Trent And John Gradisen and a few others to accumulate a staggering goal haul. We spoke before the game about using the short pass and we did it to perfection throughout the game and it was the main reason we belted in so many goals. We finished the game with all the control as we had Curtin Trinity on the back foot for the entire game. The final tally for the game was a seven to one win to us. I would like to thank our great crowd of supporters who came down and gave us rousing support from the side line.

WOMENS REPORT

45 Games In a Row.

Yep that is how many games the ladies first team has won.

Great effort ladies.

This week saw them take on possibly the bench mark of the comp and with a few players missing our task was going to be harder than normal. We took the lead in the first fifteen minutes through a great reaction goal from a short corner shot from Jess and was well finished off by Katie right ont he line.

1 nil.

We then had our work cut out for us with some bad turn overs
in the second half which saw Newman take the ball from the back line and drill it home from in front of the goals. One all she cried.

Now let me set the scene….30 seconds to go and we are awarded a short. Up steps Tanya and stuffs it but it managed to hit a foot and another short was awarded. Tanya saves face and I was happy again. Now up steps Jess and let’s one go . Yep 2..1 she cried game over and a great result for the hawks.

45 straight.
The second div women were playing Melville at mellvile on sat night and I managed to stay of the corona till after the game. This saw traceys mum very happy with my efforts.( don’t worry I made up for it after) the girls dominated from the start and came home comfortable winner in the end with a 3.1 victory. To say they played well was an understatement, they were great. A special
mention goes out to Jess Westall ,Issy Crackers and Chelsey. These kids come down and fill in all the time and do really hold their own so well done girls. With such young talent like this coming through the future of the club looks bright.
The grass girls went down to Freo this week and as normal
the Freo girls were physical on our women. The girls held their own for the first half but unfortunately the fast finishing Freo ran out comfortable winners in the end. A special thanks to Paula and Gail for running things for me on Sat arvo as I was working and then yes I fell asleep on the bed after I got out of the shower. Blame the work. .This week sees the girls at home so come down and support them.
A big thanks to my tireless manager who keeps me sane when all seems to be lost and I’m going to explode..whoosah woosah was the call. A big thanks also to her very long suffering husband who always manages to find me a Corona after the game. Thanks Geoff

MENS 1 REPORT
A great fightback

The Prov 2 Men faced UWA on their home turf on Sunday. We have always had tough games against UWA and have not beaten them in about 4 years. After a week off, a slow Thursday night training and a slower warm up, we started the game with a number of uncharacteristic errors. In the first half we had about 15 circle penetrations for no result, on the other hand UWA capitalised on our mistakes and scored 3 goals from 3 circle penetrations.

After a rev up from the coach we ran on a transformed side in the second half. Playing with more width and linking simple passes together we started to overrun a tiring UWA side. Quinton Fraser scored early in the second half after a nice piece of work from Smythy to open the flood gates. Jon Lanzon and Adam Thomson quickly followed with clever goals. 3-3 with about ten minutes to go and Captain Lee Hansord sealed the victory with a sweet goal in a congested circle.

2 wins from 2 rounds and another week off this week hopefully we can keep up some momentum for the long drive out to Joondalup in a fortnight.

30th April vs. Lakers

Result 1-0

We took the long trip up to south Yanchep with car  pooling being the order of the day. Despite a hold up on the freeway due to a prang near South St we still managed to get to the game with a bit of time to spare. With some Ausi Crawl on the CD player the young fellas were all revved up for a big day.

The game started positively with the ball being controlled nicely by the back half and plenty of space being created and used up front. Troy returned to the team this week and together with Rusty provided some experience up front to help the younger guys in Cam, Curtis, Andy, Ryan and also the more experienced Dave and last weeks leading goal scorer in Ben.

Heaps of chances, mainly through short corners were generated but unfortunately like last week we couldn’t convert. The back half was combining well with Ravi, Carl and Gibbo controlling the game and pressurizing the Lakers forwards, leaving Kyle and myself the mopping up and Bono not much work to do down back.

Nil all at the break and the 2nd half continued to play out like the first. Some good combinations and positioning was evident and we again created most of the chances. Lakers looked dangerous on rare occasions but no short corners were conceded at all up until 5 mins to go in the game. The ball made its way into the back of the net but fortunately the umpire ruled the ball lifted and disallowed the goal. Sensing our opportunity we took the ball up field and after sustained few minutes of pressure the ball found its way to the right goal post where goal scorer extraordinaire Ben Collier was on hand to put it away.

A well deserved goal as we had been on top most of the day without finishing the job. Not long after the final whistle blew to close out the match.

Plenty of work to do on our short corners and forward set ups at training but the team is working well together and looking forward to a successful year ahead.

Thanks to all the supporters who made the long trek north and cheered for us. Looking  forward to seeing everyone down to training on Thursday night.  Next game vs WASPS at Richardson park on the 7th at 3.30pm.
