HAWK EYE
What a great start to the 2011 hockey season we had last weekend !! The weather was a day out of the middle of summer with a maximum temperature of 36 degrees recorded at the height of the afternoon…. The hockey was just as hot and the Hawks recorded some very important victories. The Alfresco area was buzzing and the bar did a roaring trade. Well done to Ports for cooking the sausages to feed the masses. And cook the masses he did as he lumped a pile of frozen snags on the bbq but he recovered well and the job was done. The sight of one John Heath attempting to raise the “bali flags” on to 20mm conduit was an amazing experience. Thanks to all who assisted me with the setting up…… Ports, Heathy and Geoff.
For those who haven’t witnessed the spectacle of our home games, make an effort to make the next one. You wont be disappointed…
CLUB ROOMS THURSDAY NIGHT
We are endeavouring to make your Thursday nights a fun one with the anticipated return of “THE WHEEL” . We will be giving away a free drink every 15mins until teams are announced and match reports given. This will fill the void between coming off the track and hearing the announcements. Meals return this week and for those who haven’t experienced the culinary delights from the kitchen… be prepared…..
Wow
What a start to the 2011 season.
The club and it’s members should be proud of the start that the club achieved this week. It’s was never going to be easy to follow up after such a successful open day which saw the day go from good to great with the appearance of two of the best Aussie players showing up and signing autographs for the kids and a few of the more mature kids.

0/40 DIVISION 2
MATCH REPORT BY BARRY ROMARO
Vs JTA
This week was our first taste of second division and although we did not win
Our game we showed enough promise to suggest a win will not be far away.
We started the game solidly holding all our positions well with the ball spending fifty percent of the time with each side. JTA scored their first goal from a turn over at their attacking twenty five yard line and we were on the back foot from there. We were never dominated in the game but JTA had the edge over us in trapping and passing throughout the game and it showed on the scoreboard.
We managed many chances to score through short corners in the first half but their keeper kept us at bay. We dropped of our intensity in the second half partly due to the weather being 36 degrees.
Although we still matched JTA over most of the ground they knocked in another two goals before we scored a good consolation goal through Andy Smyth and we finished the game strongly
And we are confident that we belong in this grade and when we find our feet over the next few weeks
We will give them all a run for their money.
I would like to thank Paula Westel, Barry Vanderputt and Dave Frost for filling in for umpiring after our umpires were a no show.

Southern River Masters 50s- -v- Hale 16 April 2011
By Macca
The Masters 50s had been through an exhaustive (3 night!) pre-season training and finally Day 1 of the season had come. We knew Hale had not given us any quarter in the past and with some hot weather making itself felt our work would be cut out for us.
We focused on our short game, maintaining good possession and disposal. Hammond D’Souza and Darren Mills were creating a number of options up front and with prodigal sons Mike ‘Skip’ Nicholas and Rob Brezovski, worked well to keep the game open and maintain pressure on the Hale defence. All players showed good touch which realised an early goal early from Darren followed by another from Phil Hewton.
Steve Airey provided a solid presence in goal as both sides battled it out to half time in stifling heat. We dropped our intensity briefly which allowed Hale to reply with a good goal, but still allowed us to go to the break up 2-1.
The second half saw us aiming towards continuing our good form. Dave ‘Frosty’ Frost created a number of opportunities, capitalizing on a short corner opportunity to push us to 3-1. Barry ‘Baz’ Vanderputt displayed his characteristic calmness and consistency in defence, ably supported across the backline by Bryon ‘Macca’ McLaughlin, Jeff Anderson and Lloyd Jones. New team member Geoff ‘Gas’ Annett-Stuart and regular Shaun Keating provided coverage and good support across a number of roles.
The latter part of the game saw Skip chime in with a timely goal followed by an exceptional shot from Phil from the goal line, sealing the game at 5-1.

16th April vs. Blades
Result 3-1
The season started with a home game against Blades. You could have thought we were getting ready for the start of the cricket season with the sun shining, easterly blowing and temperature soaring. Jansen and Chris had the alfresco area set up and the stage was set for a great afternoon with 4 games to be contested.
We started the contest well with good use of the short passing game we talked about before the game. Nice combinations between the halfs and wings in particular were taking place and as we controlled proceedings and applied heaps of pressure onto the Blades defence. A number of shots on goal resulted but none were able to find the way to the back of the net.
We continued to press and earned some short corners but were still unable to get onto the scoreboard. After 20mins scores were still deadlocked until a fast break against the run of play resulted with a one on one against Bono in goals after a lapse in our defense structure. Blades managed to get it through and we found ourselves 1 down despite dominating. Soon after Blades were in the circle again and Bono was required to make a good save to help us from getting 2 down.
Time to show some character and we duly responded. Some good ball control and work rate from Rusty and Owen combining well with Cam resulting in possession in the circle and a nice deflection from Ben Collier got us on the board. Soon after Carl latched onto to a loose ball, pinged it at the goaly and Ben got another touch before the ball went over the line. Great positioning from Ben and a well deserved 2nd goal.
Half time was welcomed by both teams with a chance to grab a drink and find some shade to cool down.
Refreshed we went hard again at the start of the 2nd half and some good combinations between Gibbo and Ravi with Carl had Blades looking ragged. We earned short corners and had heaps of shots on goal. The Blades keeper did well to stop most shots directed his way and we were unable to penetrate.
The game slowed down towards the end of the half as the heat took its toll but we kept the work rate up. Finally some reward for effort when Cam slotted home our 3rd after collecting off the goaly’s pads.
So 3-1 up at the end in a good first up game. Plenty for us to work on at training – particularly finishing within the circle and some set plays. We will improve as the guys get used to playing together however.
Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us. Looking forward to seeing everyone down to training on Thursday night. Next game vs Joondalup after Easter on the 30th at 2.00pm.
