HAWK EYE

What a great start to the 2011 hockey season we had last weekend !! The weather was a day out of the middle of summer with a maximum temperature of 36 degrees recorded at the height of the afternoon…. The hockey was just as hot and the Hawks recorded some very important victories. The Alfresco area was buzzing and the bar did a roaring trade. Well done to Ports for cooking the sausages to feed the masses. And cook the masses he did as he lumped a pile of frozen snags on the bbq but he recovered well and the job was done. The sight of one John Heath attempting to raise the “bali flags” on to 20mm conduit was an amazing experience. Thanks to all who assisted me with the setting up…… Ports, Heathy and Geoff.

For those who haven’t witnessed the spectacle of our home games, make an effort to make the next one. You wont be disappointed…

CLUB ROOMS THURSDAY NIGHT

We are endeavouring to make your Thursday nights a fun one with the anticipated return of “THE WHEEL” .  We will be giving away a free drink every 15mins until teams are announced and match reports given. This will fill the void between coming off the track and hearing the announcements. Meals return this week and for those who haven’t experienced the culinary delights from the kitchen… be prepared…..

Wow

What a start to the 2011 season.

The club and it’s members should be proud of the start that the club achieved this week. It’s was never going to be easy to follow up after such a successful open day which saw the day go from good to great with the appearance of two of the best Aussie players showing up and signing autographs for the kids and a few of the more mature kids.

MATCH REPORTS

0/40 DIVISION 2

MATCH REPORT BY BARRY ROMARO

Vs JTA

This week was our first taste of second division and although we did not win

Our game we showed enough promise to suggest a win will not be far away.

We started the game solidly holding all our positions well with the ball spending fifty percent of the time with each side.  JTA scored their first goal from a turn over at their attacking twenty five yard line and we were on the back foot from there. We were never dominated in the game but JTA had the edge over us in trapping and passing throughout the game and it showed on the scoreboard.

We managed many chances to score through short corners in the first half but their keeper kept us at bay. We dropped of our intensity in the second half partly due to the weather being 36 degrees.

Although we still matched JTA  over most of the ground they knocked in another two goals before we scored a good consolation goal through Andy Smyth and we finished the game strongly

And we are confident that we belong in this grade and when we find our feet over the next few weeks

We will give them all a run for their money.

I would like to thank Paula Westel, Barry Vanderputt and Dave Frost for filling in for umpiring after our umpires were a no show.

Southern River Masters 50s- -v- Hale   16 April 2011

By Macca

The Masters 50s had been through an exhaustive (3 night!) pre-season training and finally Day 1 of the season had come. We knew Hale had not given us any quarter in the past and with some hot weather making itself felt our work would be cut out for us.

We focused on our short game, maintaining good possession and disposal. Hammond D’Souza and Darren Mills were creating a number of options up front and with prodigal sons Mike ‘Skip’ Nicholas and Rob Brezovski, worked well to keep the game open and maintain pressure on the Hale defence. All players showed good touch which realised an early goal early from Darren followed by another from Phil Hewton.

Steve Airey provided a solid presence in goal as both sides battled it out to half time in stifling heat. We dropped our intensity briefly which allowed Hale to reply with a good goal, but still allowed us to go to the break up 2-1.

The second half saw us aiming towards continuing our good form. Dave ‘Frosty’ Frost created a number of opportunities, capitalizing on a short corner opportunity to push us to 3-1. Barry ‘Baz’ Vanderputt displayed his characteristic calmness and consistency in defence, ably supported across the backline by Bryon ‘Macca’ McLaughlin, Jeff Anderson and Lloyd Jones.  New team member Geoff ‘Gas’ Annett-Stuart and regular Shaun Keating provided coverage and good support across a number of roles.

The latter part of the game saw Skip chime in with a timely goal followed by an exceptional shot from Phil from the goal line, sealing the game at 5-1.

Goal scorers:    Phil Hewton (2), Darren Mills, Dave Frost, Mike Nicholas

Best Players:    Barry Vanderputt, Phil Hewton, Dave Frost

Thanks:            Brian Coppendale for running the bench; Barry Romaro Captain-SR Masters 40s) for umpiring after his own grueling game!

16th April vs. Blades

Result 3-1

The season started with a home game against Blades. You could have thought  we were getting ready for the start of the cricket season with the sun shining, easterly blowing and temperature soaring. Jansen and Chris had the alfresco area set up and the stage was set for a great afternoon with 4 games to be contested.

We started the contest well with good use of the short passing game we talked about before the game. Nice combinations between the halfs and wings in particular were taking place and as we controlled proceedings and applied heaps of pressure onto the Blades defence. A number of shots on goal resulted but none were able to find the way to the back of the net.

We continued to press and earned some short corners but were still unable to get onto the scoreboard. After 20mins scores were still deadlocked until a fast break against the run of play resulted with a one on one against Bono in goals after a lapse in our defense structure. Blades managed to get it through and we found ourselves 1 down despite dominating.  Soon after Blades were in the circle again and Bono was required to make a good save to help us from getting 2 down.

Time to show some character and we duly responded. Some good ball control and work rate from Rusty and Owen combining well with Cam resulting in possession in the circle and a nice deflection from Ben Collier got us on the board. Soon after Carl latched onto to a loose ball, pinged it at the goaly and Ben got another touch before the ball went over the line. Great positioning from Ben and a well deserved 2nd goal.

Half time was welcomed by both teams with a chance to grab a drink and find some shade to cool down.

Refreshed we went hard again at the start of the 2nd half and some good combinations between Gibbo and Ravi with Carl had Blades looking ragged. We earned short corners and had heaps of shots on goal. The Blades keeper did well to stop most shots directed his way and we were unable to penetrate.

The game slowed down towards the end of the half as the heat took its toll but we kept the work rate up. Finally some reward for effort when Cam slotted home our 3rd after collecting off the goaly’s pads.

So 3-1 up at the end in a good first up game. Plenty for us to work on at training – particularly finishing within the circle and some set plays.  We will improve as the guys get used to playing together however.

Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us. Looking forward to seeing everyone down to training on Thursday night.  Next game vs Joondalup after Easter on the 30th at 2.00pm.

HAWK EYE Southern River Hockey Club Vol.7 Ed 01

Season 2011

The 2011 hockey season gets underway this weekend after a long and gruelling pre season campaign. It wasn’t that long ago that we were slogging it out in the sand at Myalup Beach back in early February. With the historic appointment on Matthew Butterini as the club’s senior coach, the club is looking forward to another rewarding and successful season. The Hawks made history with Matthew’s signing as we became the first “non classic league” club to secure the services of a current Australian Kookaburra. The club has increased the playing strength of the women’s contingent by adding a further turf side to its already highly successful top team as well as maintaining the traditional grass team. The senior men have maintained the two turf teams and a grass side to add to the older brigade of the o/40 and o/50 teams. The teams will this year look to build on the success of last year where the 2nd turf side made the Grand Final and the O/40 won the Premiership. Welcome to the new players to the club and we all hope your time at Hawks is a rewarding and successful time and we look forward to seeing you in our club uniform for a long time to come. Good Luck to all Teams this weekend….. CLUBROOMS As we have done in previous seasons the traditional after training “meeting” in the club rooms is operating again this season. The newly created “report” by team captains and or team representative to the crowd turned out to be very successful last year and will be carries forward to this year. It is extremely important that all players make an effort to come into the rooms after training to mix socially with your fellow club mates but also to hear some of the very important information that has to be passed on to members. Of course the all important team selections is also an integral part of Thursday nights and we ask that you all make the effort to stay until all teams have been announced. This is especially important for the new members to the club as we all then have the chance to recognise the achievements of all Hawkers… Meals will return on Thursday nights and we kick it off with the “Traditional Players Tea” tonight…. OPEN DAY What a fantastic carnival atmosphere we had the opportunity to share last Saturday as the Southern River Hockey Club presentes its 2011 Open Day. The “alfresco” was in full swing with music pumping, sponsors banners flying, the aroma of the sausage sizzle and fried onions filling the air and all the time watching some great hockey being played. Thanks to all for making the effort to attend and making the day so very successful. I would like to take this opportunity to thank several people whose tireless efforts didn’t go un noticed. Mick Spear- Banners Chris “Ports” Baker- Setting Up, Taking Down, Connecting the sound system, serving the kitchen, ground marking and generally helping out !! Jennifer Hoskin- Fantastic job in the kitchen Geoff Foster- Ground marking, onion peeling, barman, general hand Guy Hoskin- Ground marking Paul “Bono” Hewson-Ground marking John Heath-Ground marking Arte and his boys-Banners and tables and chairs Miranda and Cindy-General helping Thank you all so very much. With my impending operation on my leg this year, it is pleasing to know so many people are putting their hands up to share the load. Thank you all so much-Janson Hoskins 2011 TEAM REPORTS Please continue the great game reports to me each week for the HAWKEYE. It is imperative that all members get the chance to keep up with the progress of all our teams. Deadlines for reports will again be Tuesday nights and emails to : vicjan1201@bigpond.com

Coach’s Pre-Round One Message

April 14th, 2011 by matthew.butturini

Guys, thanks to everyone who has been attending pre-season training. For those who were there it has been a pretty tough couple of months with some real gruelling sessions which I’m pleased to say seemed to actually attract more numbers than deter people, which is an attribute not only to the guys who turned up but to the club as well.

Before I get onto the teams can I just make a note that although I think we have come along way in the past couple of months not only as individuals but as a team as well, we are still a long way away from reaching our goals and I think this is an important factor to take into the season that we are only going to improve and get closer to these goals if guys are working hard and putting in the effort week in and week out. As a club we want to do well and this is going to take a collective effort so I need to see EVERYONE at training, I need to see EVERYONE working hard and I need to see EVERYONE enjoying themselves as this is ultimately why we play sport but who enjoys it when we lose? So lets get out there and win and really put SOUTHER RIVER on the map!

Ok gentleman the following two lists are the 1′s and 2′s teams that I have selected for Round 1 2011, an asterix next to a name means that, that player is going to be playing both grades this weekend. Also for those who were there on Tuesday we had a vote for leadership groups, due to the high number of draws within the voting I have gone ahead and made an executive decision for both grades by appointing two captains. One’s captain for 2011 will be Lee Hansord and Two’s captain for 2011 will be Kevin Pethick, Congratulations to both. If there are any issues regarding this weekend or you just want to chat about selection then either give me a call or drop me an email and i’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

2011 Hawks Open Day

April 3rd, 2011 by Janson Hoskins

The Southern River Hockey Club will hold its annual Open day on Saturday 9th April commencing at 11-00am. The day will feature an extensive display of the club’s playing stocks this year with a series of exhibition matches involving players from mens and womens turf sides and a mixture of grass players. The day will also give the club an opportunity to showcase the coaching talents of Matthew Butturini. The Hawks have just completed a gruelling pre season training campaign and indications are that another highly successful season is a reality. The club has increased its women turf teams to two this year whilst maintaining the traditional grass side. The men will again be represented on turf this year in two grades  and will compliment that with a further two grass sides and a veterans 0/40 team and a 0/50 side for the older brigade.

The day’s program will be as follows;

Women 1 v Women 2                                                        11-00am Start

Mens Grass 1 v Mens Grass 2 (composite teams) 12-10pm Start

Men 1 v Men 2                                                                        1-30pm Start

All players are requested to attend the day and are asked to assemble at the club’s headquarters  in Gay St Gosnells at 10-30 as club president John Heath will officially open season 2011 before the first match.

The day will feature the famous”alfresco” area for spectators and families are encouraged to attend to add to the festival atmosphere as a bbq will be operational all day for a gold coin donation. All club coaches and administrators will be on hand to promote the day and any prospective new members are encouraged to attend to witness the growth of hockey in this region. There are vacancies in all teams and any player wishing to join the club should bring their sticks and playing gear on the day.

The club will be running a full bar service on the day with new barman Geoff Foster promising a wide range of  refreshments at very reasonable pricing. The club would like to take this opportunity to thank outgoing barman, Brian Coppendale, for his tireless efforts since the clubs inception in 2006.

More information on the day can be obtained by phoning Janson Hoskins on 0437157556
