GREAT EFFORT HAWKERS

Grand Final – Southern River U13s vs Dale

What a way to finish the season, a little known Hawks team made up of players that had never played hockey at all before let alone played in a grand final beat all odds to compete against Dale for the boys 6/7 2010 pennant. To say that the players were in awe of the occasion was an understatement, most had never seen so many spectators and they were certainly cheering them on. The game started slowly and was played mainly in the midfield Dale got a couple of quick forward breaks which put the Hawks defence under a bit of pressure but Tim and Jasmine were up to the task and kept the ball away from goals, but it was only a matter of time before Dale broke the shackles and although Nathan did his darndest to keep the ball out it rebounded straight to the Dale key attacker who managed to hit a bouncey ball into goals. It was early days and there was still plenty of time for the Hawks to get an equaliser which spurred the Hawks on. The halves of Daniel, Jessica and Jordan were relentless trapping and sending the ball forward. The attackers Daniel, Izzy, Brittany, Tayla, Karl, Bec and Emily were spirited and tried all avenues to get the ball into goal, they had the ball in the Hawks forward attack consistently, Tim was moved from fullback to forward to try and rein act the goal that won them the semi final but it wasn’t to be and the game ended at a 1 nil loss. The team should be very proud of themselves at the start of the year you wouldn’t have thought they would be in a grand final and to only go down 1 nil shows how quickly the players have improved their skills, strength and determination. Look out next season. A big thanks to all the parents and spectators for being nice and loud.

Grand Final – Ladies Provisional 4 vs Dale

PREMIERS 2010
No nerves amongst the players what so ever, well okay maybe one or two and with Goal Keeper Miranda being injured at training of all places her leading foot (thanks guys) and with no Mia the Hawks hit the field. Expecting Dale to be quick out of the blocks like they were in the preliminary the Hawks were wound and ready to shut down Dale at all costs. For those that watched the junior game there was more determination to make sure that Dale did not get a win. Even though Dale started with the ball that was about all the possession they had, the Hawks quickly claimed possession and mounted their forward attack. The Hawks dominated in all areas of the field with any forward threat that Dale tried to create quickly neutralised. Hawks players were running in all directions creating passing and long ball options. The first goal was scored quite quickly but was disallowed as the umpire blew for a short at exactly the same time, but it was only a matter of time before another was scored and then three more to finish the half and dashing most of Dale’s hopes for a win. Entering the second half with a 4 zip lead and a new keeper(thanks Alanah the gardening will have to wait til sunday) the Hawks tried to continue with the same intensity as the first half but it proved more difficult than expected and only two more goals were added to the scoreboard. This game was a great team game, with lots of talking, some great passing, some excellent steals and some ripper goals Jess’s tomahawk which is now precision perfect, Bec’s flick over a sliding keeper, Ang’s patience and control, Emma’s rebound work and Jacinta’s relentlessness. The game was played in great spirits and the umpiring was superb. A big thanks to all our lovely loud spectators – yes – you know who you are and if you are wondering we can hear everything you yell. To our coach Fred and manager Cindy as the President of our club would say – Shit Hot !
43 games without a loss!
Let’s see what next season brings.

SOUTHERN RIVER HAWKS
WIN PREMIERSHIP
BY BARRY ROMARO

THIS WEEKEND AFTER A STELLA YEAR ON THE HOCKEY FIELD THE SOUTHERN RIVER VETERANS OVER FORTY SIDE BEAT NEWMAN NIGHTS TO WIN THE DIVISION THREE PREMIERSHIP. THIS WAS A VERY SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR US AS WE WENT THROUGH THE ENTIRE YEAR WITHOUT LOOSING A GAME COLLECTING THE CHALLENGE CUP FLAG AND THE MINOR PREMIERSHIP FLAG ALONG THE WAY AND CAPPING IT ALL OFF WITH THE PREMIERSHIP FLAG. THE GAME STARTED AS ALL THE OTHER ENCOUNTERS WE HAD WITH NEWMAN DURING THE YEAR, THAT BEING A FRENETIC PACE AND ATTACKING STYLE OF GAME. BOTH TEAMS HAD THEIR MINDS SET ON WINNING THE TITLE AND THE TEMPO AND SKILL OF THE GAME WAS OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY. THE HAWKS OPENED THEIR ACCOUNT WITH A LOVELY TAP IN BY JOHN GRADISEN AFTER A QUICK TURNOVER AND SOME MAGICAL PASSING BY THE HAWKS MIDFIELD. TOWARDS THE END OF THE FIRST HALF NEWMAN SCORED A CONTROVERSIAL GOAL, AND IT TOOK SOME FOR US TO GET OVER THE UMPIRING ERROR AND CONCENTRATE ON THE GAME, BUT TO OUR CREDIT WE REGAINED OUR FOCUS AND TOOK THE GAME TO ANOTHER LEVEL.
THE HALF TIME BREAK SAW THE HAWKS ENJOY A REST AND A DRINK WHILST THE SCORE WAS LOCKED AT ONE GOAL EACH. LIKE ALL WEEKS BEFORE THAT WE DISCUSSED HOW WE ONCE AGAIN NEED TO USE COLIN THROUGH THE CENTRE OF THE FIELD AND NOT BYPASS HIM. THE SECOND HALF GOT AWAY TO A FRENETIC PACE AND NEITHER SIDE SEEMED TO BE MAKING ANY GROUND BEFORE SOME GREAT MIDFIELD PASSING AND FORWARD WORK EARNED US A SHORT CORNER. WITH BARRY OFF THE FIELD ANDY TOOK HIS POSITION OF TRAPPER AND CONVERTED A GREAT GOAL. THIS IGNITED OUR SIDE AND WE HAD ABOUT TEN MINUTES OF COMPLETE DOMINANCE THAT THEN RESULTED IN A SERIES OF GREAT PASSES THAT FOUND TRENTY IN THE CIRCLE AND HE CONVERTED AN EXCELLENT GOAL. SOON AFTER THAT WE MADE A SUBSTITUTION BLUNDER AND HAD ONLY TEN PLAYERS ON THE FIELD IN WHICH TIME THE NEWMAN SIDE SCORED THEIR SECOND GOAL. THE LAST TEN MINUTES OF THE GAME SAW US DEFENDING BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY WITH ROB, MARTIN AND JAMIE PULLING OFF SOME OF THE SAVES OF THE YEAR. WHEN THE FINAL WHISTLE BLEW WE WERE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE NOT BEEN LOCKED AT THREE ALL. THE HOCKEY GODS HAD SMILED ON US FOR THOSE LAST FEW SECONDS AND A GREAT SHOT BY NEWMAN HAD BEEN DEFLECTED WIDE BY ONE OF THEIR OWN PLAYERS AND THE GAME AND PREMIERSHIP WAS OURS. THANK YOU JOHN HEATH FOR THE SUPPORT FROM YOU THROUGH OUT THE YEAR IN UMPIRING US AND YOUR CAMEO APPEARANCE IN THE GRAND FINAL. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK THE LARGE NUMBER OF SUPPORTERS THAT CAME TO BOTH OUR GRAND FINAL MATCH AND MANY WHO SUPPORTED US AT NEARLY EVERY GAME WE PLAYED. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK STEVE FOR RECORDING ON VIDEO THE ENTIRE GAME AND TAKING ACTION PHOTOS THAT I HOPE WILL WE WILL SEE ON THE WEBSITE SOON. ANOTHER GREAT FUN SEASON WAS HAD BY ONE AND ALL AT SOUTHERN RIVER HOCKEY, SEE YOU ALL NEXT YEAR.
GO HAWKS!
In line with recent talks we are looking for expressions of interest to put together a visit by Hawks veterans team members to Windows Margaret River Winery on the 9th of October 2010.
The estate is owned and managed by Len and Barbara Davies. Len would be known to most of you as a member of veterans hockey teams and as a current player with the Hawks Over 50s team.
The plan is for us to meet on Saturday the 9th of October at or around the 5.00 pm mark, enjoy a visit to Len and Barbara’s cellar door and spending time in their company.
This also the weekend of the Busselton Veterans Hockey Carnival so if you are down there, it’s only a short jump to Windows.
We are leaving your travel and accommodation arrangements to your own devices. The event will be BYO for a BBQ with your own drinks or I’m sure you’ll be able to purchase from Len’s range. Please take time to consider and let me know your thoughts either way by either return email or call me ( Macca) on 0437 753 249.
