Well done to all our members for making the effort to come into the rooms after training and Im sure you all agree the atmosphere being created by all the announcements is remarkable. Please just remember to keep the noise down when other team captains are having their spiel-its just a respect thing.

The next mission is to encourage those players not playing Saturdays at 2.00 or 3.30 to come down to the club for a short time to support the grass roots of our hockey club. You all will be surprised at the level of skill shown by our grass players and it makes for a good Saturday arvo’s viewing. The “Alfresco” is pumping, Nina’s Kitchen is creating culinary masterpieces and of course Brian’s Bar is well stocked with ample quantities of refreshments. Please make an effort to come down and support the Hawk’s. You all started your hockey on grass and Im sure these players would appreciate your attendance. Even if your game is early and you are finished and have a spare hour or so, come on down….. You will be pleasantly surprised !!!!!

10th July vs. Kwinana

Challenge Cup Round

Result 0-1

A rare opportunity to bring a pennant back to the club rooms this week with a Challenge Cup game against Kwinana. We knew we were in for a tough game and wanted to avenge our 0-2 defeat at the hands of Kwinana in the first round. The weather had looked threatening all day but remained fine for the duration of the game much the delight of the crowd that was gathering to support the Hawks.

We tried some positional changes this week knowing where Kwinana’s strengths were and wanted to be very solid early on at the back to resist the inevitable pressure. Troy joined me at fullback with Kyle taking on left half duties. Peter was available this week and slotted into centre forward.

As expected Kwinana came out hard and put a lot of pressure on us deep in defence for the 1st 10 minutes. The backline held up well with no clear shots at goal being allowed and 1 short corner being repelled. We started to apply some pressure of our own to return the favour to the Kwinana defence. Everyone was working very hard and the pressure on the opposition was starting to show as their tackling became more aggressive and the in fighting became more pronounced.

The teamwork displayed by the Hawks was some of the best this year and we generated a number of chances to score. Unfortunately we couldn’t quite convert and following some more solid defence we went into half time locked at 0-0.

The 2nd half saw more excellent hockey from all players in toughly contested game. Both teams generated some more chances but nothing resulted until about 15 minutes from the end of the half when Kwinana scored a field goal after some concerted pressure. For the rest of the half we pressed very hard but with could not get an equalizer. With about a minute to go a short corner was won but the resultant shot went just wide and there was no time left for any further significant play.

All up the boys should be very proud of the way they played and with so many youngsters in the team it was a great learning experience for them. We gave it everything but could not quite bring it home. A great team effort.

Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us.

17th July vs. Willeton

Result 1-3

We ventured down to the swampy bog pit known as Trevor Gribble Reserve in Willeton expecting to find Shrek, donkey, Fiona and Puss in Boots but instead came across a Willeton team very keen to defend their turf. We knew we had to adjust to the ground conditions to be competitive.

Gibbo led the team today in my absence and also took the fullback spot. Young Kyle joined him at the back and acquitted himself well during the game. Willo started strongly and showed they were really keen to avenge a defeat from early in the year. After only about 5 minutes we conceded a goal and were facing a strong challenge. After some settling down and adjustment to the conditions we started to press forward but the passes were getting cut off due to lack of punch in our passing and a willingness to try to take on one player too many rather than playing the early ball. Some concerted forward play from Willeton on a fast break led to a short corner being conceded not long before the break. The corner was converted and we headed into the break 0-2 down

At half time we discussed the changes we needed to make to our approach to the game on this field and came out determined to pull the 2 goals back. We tried to pass the ball earlier and make stronger passes and to everyone’s credit we played a much better brand of hockey in the 2nd half. Penetrating the D was proving difficult with Willeton defending their territory strongly. We managed to force a few shorts but couldn’t convert and despite some really solid play conceded a 3rd goal.

We didn’t drop our heads and struck back with a goal to Troy in open play very quickly. We pressed hard for the balance of the game but couldn’t break down the Willeton defense. A much better 2nd half than the first but we weren’t good enough to peg back the deficit. The guys put a good effort in today with everyone complaining of heavy legs at the end of the game.

A chance to rest up with an umpiring bye this week.

Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us.

FREO AGAIN
By Deb Clearwater
Saturday 17th July saw the Hawks heading off to Fremantle again this time to take on Fremantle Black. The weather gods were once again on our side and put on a fine day for the game (we all know how cold playing in Fremantle can be).
This week our player pool of 18 was severely depleted with a number of players unable to play. Special mention must be made though for “Scary” who turned up to play even though she had only got to bed at 5am that morning – and it must be said she played a blinder! And also a big thank you to Candice for donning the goalie gear again (especially after what Fremantle did to her last time! )
Another big thank you must also go out to Ange who helped us out and to Paula and Sharon (Kwinana) who umpired for us as Willetton Reds never turned up to umpire.
Dave decided to make a few key positional changes this week by putting Lou into Centre ford (first time playing in the front line), Kellie played a number of different positions (Inner, Centre Half, Right Half and fullback – 2 of those she had never played before), Megan was moved out onto the wing to give us some speed out wide and Deb was back in at Centre Half.
There were good points and bad points to our game this week. The positional changes seemed to help stop the issue we have been having with the opposition getting the ball and racing up the middle of the field – this week they had to take the ball wide to get it up the field. We also had some good runs up the middle ourselves and this week we scored a goal (well done Megan)– which was much needed for our confidence. We also had a number of scoring shots that we were unable to capitalise on and Fremantle got a couple of quick goals at the end of the game. Once again though the elusive short corner evaded us again, not from lack of trying but we just can’t seem to buy one.
It must not be forgotten that, although we lost the game 5 – 1 it was a vast improvement on the last time we played Fremantle Black who beat us 9-0 when they had no goalie and a player short.
Come on Hawks let’s see if we can convert all that hard work we’re doing to get the points on the board.

Metro 4
Southern River v Fremantle
Result 1 -1 Draw
Best on Ground – Gary

Last time we met Fremantle my report was edited due to content about the opposition and the umpiring. So to save the editor a job I will self edit. On the umpiring… BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANKETY BLANK. On three of the black and whites….BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANKETY BLANK.

Now onto the good stuff. Last week Fremantle won the Challenge Cup against Whitfords in a strongly fought game. We didn’t roll over the last time we played them and after two wins in a row, the Fives were fired up and ready to take it to the Magpies.

We set up our 4 3 3 1 combo expecting that it was going to be a defensive game on our part. Strangely enough, it was us attacking up the wings and defending in the centre. It was a bizarre experience, there wasn’t a lot of talking going on, but everyone seemed to know where to pass the ball and where their team mates were. I think it is a sign of the team gelling and getting used to having a rotating bench after starting the season without a full team.

Now we know Kenny is on some medication for his stuffed shoulder so we thought why not put him in charge of the bench. Well I want some of what he’s taking because after the first fifteen minutes we’d had twelve rotations and Fremantle were obviously more confused than me. Mind you when the Chief and I collided knee to temple I was the one seeing flying elephants.

Fremantle picked up two short corners in the first half and we had one. All the short corners were futile. It was half time and we were ready for a breather. Phil called the gang to order, read the riot act and we reset to the starting lineup. Freo were clearly rattled by the pressure that had been loaded on them by the forwards and by the defensive of triumphant of Phil, Gary and Paul D.

Fremantle having confused us for Dale in first half and not being used to being scoreless were ready to fire. However the right side combo drove us forward and once inside the circle Trenty and Dylan combined to give Tomahawk the first goal of the game. Unfortunately that brought out the uglies all round as we tried to stay in front and Fremantle tried to come back. At this point we reinsert BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANKETY BLANK as six players across the two teams discovered the colour green. I enjoyed mine which was issued for apparently inciting another player to slide tackle head first into my knee by smiling at him. Pretty sure I was given the cane for that at high school as well.

Anyway when we are down to seven players on the field the defence holds up well. Four minutes to go, and as everyone runs back on as Fremantle drive forward one more time. How hard it is to breathe though as we see them inside the D and as if in slow motion the ball gets through and scores are even. We mark time the whistle is blown and our fourth draw of the season is complete. Ahh the joy of snatching a draw from the jaws of victory.

Congratulations guys, absolute team effort, great skills displayed by all and proof that we are “Moving Forward”.

Match Report: Mens Provisional 2 Black
By: Jonathon Lanzon
17th of July vs Rockingham
Result: 2-0
Returning from the midseason break, the Southern River Hawks’ Provisional Two team weren’t looking too good with only two wins under their belt. So this week’s game against Rockingham, down in Rockingham, was a must win for any chance to make it to the finals.
The Hawks team was fairly slim this week with two players out of action, meaning the eleven that made the long trip down to the Rockingham turf had to be prepared to fight it out with minimal rest. If the opposition was anything to come by, a Rockingham player with his front teeth missing, the Hawks had to make sure they kept their composure for any chance to take away the points.
Sun facing the Hawks, the Hawks took early procession of the ball. The powerhouse of the Hawks, missing in previous games, started to come to fruition with total domination from the not-as Southern River team. However no matter how much the Hawks continued to attack they couldn’t break the stronghold of the Rockingham defence.
The constant attack almost ended up being the Hawks downfall when Rockingham missed an open goal after a ball streamed side on to the Hawks’ goals towards an unmarked player. Being so close to going down, the Hawks turned up the heat and went back into attack. It was twenty minutes into the first half until the Hawks got their first goal with Ross Smith smashing the ball from a difficult angle on the edge of the penalty circle into the back of the goals. Ross’s goal was the only goal the Hawks would score in the first half.
With the start of the second half the opportunities started to come with the Hawks even more determined to increase their lead. The second half saw some quality play from Luke Giblett (promoted from the two’s), Lee Hansord, and Tim Bowman, all ensuring they controlled the mid field. This helped gift Ross Smith and Jonathon Lanzon a few chances, however the nail in the coffin came from Lee on a short corner. With a perfect push out, a perfect trap, and a perfect strike Lee gave the Hawks their second goal and with the final whistle following shortly after the three points the Hawks came to collect.
Over all it was a good game with quality play from all involved. In particular a shout out goes to Quinton Fraser who did a fine job for his first time in fullback.

“Arty gets his goal”
This weekend’s game pitted us against a well-drilled side that were determined to beat us this time after us taking the points against them in round one. It started off at a cracking pace with both sides not getting their way until the fifteen-minute mark of the first quarter when Harlie’s scored the first goal of the match. We started to struggle with our game plan as the opposition forced us to make errors and we started to use the long ball far too often robbing us of any real chances to score goals. Arthur was having his best game for us since coming to our club and like the last few weeks he was looking like scoring a goal very soon. Due to us not covering our man Harlie’s were able to counter attack with long balls and up and overs. Things changed a little for us when we scored our first goal and after seven more minutes we scored another. We went into the half time break two to one up. We had a good chat about the changes that could be made and to get the inner’s to start marking up their opposition and we put our talk to good use in the second half. Not long into the second half Harlie’s equalized with a clever goal lifted over Rob’s head locking the score at two all. We were really struggling to shake the determined Harlie’s off when Arthur chimed in with his first goal for Southern River and the game changed for us as we seemed to play with a lot more confidence once we got back in front. Over the next ten minutes we scored another two goals through great teamwork using our short passing tactics and ended the game by winning five goals to two. Thankyou to John Heath for umpiring for us and I would also like to thank Darrin Mills for also filling in for us at short notice.

Report by Diana
TEAMWORK means a combined effort but our HAWKS add to this meaning by

TEAMWORK = Tenacious / Encouraging / Altogether / Marvellous / Willing / Optimistic Resolute / Keen

Umpires = the Van de Putt brothers (Dave still kept his coaching hat on at some stages and gave us tips along the way)

Side Line = Jo ran the interchange

Back Line= Diana in goals managing to stop a few. Annie, Lou and Tilly rotated through the back line. Annie saving many goals, Tilly backing the goalie many times, Lou continuing with her clear hit outs.

Half Line= Terri, Sarah, Kris, Kellie rotated along the half line (Lou, Annie and Deb played here too) Terri and Sarah hard to distinguish between the two as both had great runs up and down the line both blocking and creating play. Kris kept the tackling strong all game. Kellie continued her strong passing and good positioning of play.

Front Line= Rachael, Tanase, Lenni, Candice, Robyn, Meagan and Deb rotated along the forward line. Rachael had good runs with the ball. Tanase always in good side line position waiting for the ball on hit outs. Lenni strong on the left as usual. Candice ran and ran then if losing the ball chased it down again. Robyn came at the ball hard and very determined. Meagan had good passes leading up to and in the circle. Deb had good backing of play and feeding of the ball.

Injuries = Lou copped one in the lower rib from ???!!
Meagan had a stick hit her hard on the leg

Summary = A nice game of hockey played by all in good spirit. Great effort by all our players, we just couldn’t convert and they did. The entire field was utilised. Lovely team to compete against. The goal score didn’t reflect the strength our team showed.

Southern River Ladies Prov 4

Paula Westell

Now in first spot on the ladder the girls are bonding really well as a team and trying to cement our position on top. With some close games against Vic park who seem to be able to bottle up our opportunities to score and some convincing wins against Joondalup and Dale we headed into our first Sunday game in a while against Uni. Unsure of how we would fair missing some of our usual Saturday players the girls hit the turf with a positive attitude and proved to themselves that they are really capable. Although our short game wasn’t at its best the long game worked really well and we managed to come away with a convincing 4 zip win which were all but one from short corners. This weekend we were back to playing a Saturday game and although the freezing weather had scared all but 6 of us away from training, we definitely put on a great team display with our short game being back to its best and our long game also working very well but what was even better to see was the conversion rate on our shots at goals and our use of the ball within the D which was first rate. The game had the works a beautiful shot from the left top of D by Jessica sending the ball rocketing into the top right netting of the goals, a Hatric to Ang (nice slap shots and then the awesome Ang swing and lookout) some great rebound work by Karyn and Chris some lovely running goals by Emma, a stroke which Karyn earned and converted and a nicely finished off goal on the right post to Bec. Reading this you may be thinking that the game was completely controlled by the forwards and although they did some excellent work so did our midfield and inners of Mia, Jacinta, Tracey and Jessica which were excellent blocking most of the oppositions attack and sending the ball into our attack and the odd opposition break that got away was repelled by the ever reliable Gail, Raelene and Miranda who cleared the ball back into attack each and every time (no Miranda you didn’t score a goal..). This was a great team game to be involved in and will help our confidence heading into the Challenge Cup. A big thanks to Diana who did a superb job in goals and Alanah who played on field (who hasn’t lost her touch) for helping us out last Sunday night.

Vets 50
After our surprise loss to Blades the week before, the Hawks Vets 2 team were determined to start the new round with a renewed desire to acquit themselves far better than we had previously.
We hosted Kalamunda for the re-match; we had gone down with an under strength team in Round 1 so we were keen to make amends albeit missing one of our key playmakers Phil Hewton. The game started well with a good cohesive attack and a tighter short game. New member Darrin Cahill was providing many opportunities and an element of dash on the wing with Bobby Figredo continuing to defence with his brilliant skills, giving us several chances in front of
goal. He was ably assisted by our forwards including Brian Coppendale and Arthur Hodges.
Goalkeeper Steve Airey was a rock, repelling several attacks, supported by Lloyd Jones, Macca, Jeff Anderson, John Ellis and Dave Frost. We found it difficult to get a score on the board despite having
opportunities and after turnovers by both sides, we went to the break 0-0. Kalamunda scored a chance goal midway through the second half and to our credit we lifted and replied with one through Bobby. Despite all efforts and
extraordinary pressure, we finished the game 1-1, very happy to take a point and some positive play into the second round.
Highlights included both sides lifting their intensity which resulted in
several skilful passages of play, and a solo run into the circle by Damon Brittain which stopped the crowd!
Thanks to Arthur for stepping up after his game to help us out; Shaun
Keating for coming on despite injury concerns and to John Heath and Martin Hickey for assisting us capably with umpiring duties.

Match Report: Mens Provisional 2 Black
By: Jonathon Lanzon
27th of June vs Suburban
Result: 0-1
Another cold Perth night and the Hawks were in force with the Men’s Provisional Two team taking on second placed Subs on a late Sunday night at the UWA turf. The boys were in high spirit warming up on the pitch following a win from the Hawks top Women’s side in the game before. Subs are a tough team and the Hawks needed everything they had to walk away victorious. The team was only slightly altered with addition of the Two’s super halfback Steve DeWind into the side.
After winning the toss the Hawks started the game in attack. The ball was pushed around smoothly between players with multiple opportunities up front. However after 10 minutes the momentum changed seeing Subs take control of procession. The Hawks worked hard with Brad Kneebone, Dean Savage-Morton, and Carl Bowman working hard to keep the attacks at bay. Inevitably Subs, after being awarded a short corner, put a swiftly placed ball back to the left post where the Subs pusher was ready to strike into an unguarded goal.
With the first half over and Subs having most of the opportunities the Hawks were happy the score line was a manageable one nil in Subs favour. After some encouraging words from coach Lee Hansord the second half saw a change of mentality with the Hawks holding that never die attitude. The coach led with example with Lee Hansord dominating the half line, being instrumental in getting the ball up to the forwards.
The Hawks came close twice. The first from a ball from Lee Hansord behind the 25 to Jonathon Lanzon at the top the penalty circle to Daniel Mckeown inside the penalty circle. Unfortunately that play of team work saw the ball go just wide of the goals. The second and closest opportunity from the Hawks came from Connor Cracknell who took a reverse stick shot that bounced hard off the wood work.
In the end it wasn’t to be with the Subs walking away one goal nil winners. The Hawks take on Joondalup next week looking for a win to keep their final hopes alive.
Next Game vs Joondalup Lakers at Melville at 1:00pm on the 3rd of July

Under 15A
A pleasant sunday morning but a disastrous start to the day. Due to a
mix up with HockeyWA we drove all the way up the freeway to Joondalup only to find we were playing the original fixture at Hale.
After arriving only a little late, a brief warm up and a quick
inspiring speech from Heathy the game got underway.
The young hawks attacked strongly with Aidan and Bryan running hard
and exerting plenty of pressure on their ball carriers. Lucas was on
fire running down the wing and the ever reliable backline of the
triple JJJs (Jayden, Jess and Jacob) held back any opposition forays
into our defensive 50.
Keelie was having a strong game and Toby was running his guts out to
“get to the post”.
Luke at center half kept the ball flowing through the midfield as he
does every week. He also owes Heathy a new ball now as one of his
power hits smashed the ball in two.
Zak was his usual self, some super saves yet again. He was also
copping flak from the Newman players due to his “colourful” hockey
shirt. Being the character he is he took these jibes on the chin and
gave some back. Truly deserving of a spot on the regional squad.
Mitch made position to receive and unlucky on so many opportunities.
He finally cracked it halfway through the half scoring his first for
the day.
Toby was the next recipient of a scoring shot as he followed Heathys
instructions and perched on the left post. A missed shot on goal from
Mitch played straight to him and he deflected nicely to get on the
score sheet.
Newman were under the pump from the start but a lull in play from the
Hawks saw them break away quickly and score. Realizing their error the Triple JJJs did not let this happen again.

Halftime and the air over the huddle didnt turn blue this week.

So far the game had been a great contest with some nice passages of
play. However the hawks couldn’t rest easy with the score sitting on
2-1. Plenty of pressure, both physically and mentally was applied with
the Hawks being paid a number of shorts. It seemed everyone was lining up for a shot but it was Mitch who trapped truly and drilled a
powerhouse shot into the back of the net. 3-1
The game ran out with the Hawks posting their first win in this grade.
Well done kids, great effort. We move up a spot on the ladder and only
three wins out of the top four.

I have to mention the great job Dave Frost does as every week he
volunteers to umpire. Also this week was the second time this season
he’s carried an injured player off the field. Onya Dave.

Southern River v Blades
Score 1 – 0 Win…..wooohooo
Brad George

First of all let me have a grumble. This week we had a complaint from the other team that there were comments of racial nature attributed from a member of our team to a Blades team member. No joking on this matter, it is serious and if I hear it on the field you will be off. Keep any race based comments towards other players to yourself. Cheers blokes, now onto the good stuff.

For the first time this season, the entire team played to their individual ability rather than the level of their individual hangover. With our recent lineup change following Ports’s changed work commitments and Kenny blowing a shoulder we had reshuffle 57 of the year and Phil was dragged back to running the backline. The Gary and Phil show and the Bono guitar hero solo act was a dream team in defense and this was reflected in the best on ground votes.

The Tomahawk Twins who were roundly supported by Chief and Ravi were on fire and the awesome firepower up front resulted in our single goal for the game after 15 minutes. Blades came back hard and pulled off four short corners, all to no avail.

Ravi and Phil identified the play makers and the team listened to their calls and locked on to the three Blades players who proved most troublesome. The manning up was incredible and the running back after every attack was inspiring. Army playing in the right half slot showed incredible speed and skill in backing up the left hand side defense and then become the playmaker on the right.

The second half of the game was as energetic as the first and everyone held up their end of the bargain. Blades could see their impressive position on the ladder being under threat and a bit of bodyline action slipped into the game and resulted in the umpires giving two of the players involved a swift reminder of the colours of the rainbow. Phil’s forced break gave me a chance to drop into defense and for Bitters to pick up the slack in the centre. I was in awe at the way every player ran back to stop the onslaught and again how quickly they pushed forward into attack.

The game was the best umpired and the best played of the season and it was pleasure to have a win at home! Best on ground Kristian and Gary.

Metro 3 Gold
26th June vs. Freo
Missed Opportunities

Report by Clive Reader

Result 0-4

The second round started this week with a return match against Freo at their home ground. We were looking forward to playing a highly combative match as Freo always put up a good fight. Dave V was out again this week with Brandon from the U/15 filling in while Kurtis was back after his bout of tonsillitis.
We dominated the play early in the first half creating a number of shots on goal. Unfortunately none of these found the target but they missed by millimeters not metres. Freo won a short corner after a rare move forward which they managed to put away. The Hawks responded with more sustained pressure with lots of space being found in the middle from long balls through from the back. We still couldn’t convert and a very lucky deflection at the other end resulted in a 2nd goal conceded. We continued to press but couldn’t find the way past the keeper who was playing an outstanding game. 0-2 down at half time not a reflection of general play and we knew we were still in the game.
There was optimism at half time that if we kept working together and creating opportunities eventually we would get some reward. Today it just didn’t happen. We had goal scoring chances well saved, many short corners that we couldn’t convert and a sense that today just wasn’t our day. To rub salt into our wounds Freo managed to get another 2 goals in half by taking the rare chances that presented themselves.
To the teams credit we never gave in and kept the pressure up all day but to no avail. Freo took their chances far better than us and deserved their win.
Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us. Looking forward to seeing everyone down to training on Thursday night. Next game vs. Melville at home at 2.00pm.

Southern River vs Newman nights

TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH
We welcomed Newman Nights Hockey Club today to our fantastic grounds and facilities today, they are the second placed side in our division and we are holding top spot. The game was the most skilful game we have played, the Newman side were stronger than they were in the first round with just one inclusion going by the name of “Rocket” and we struggled all day to hold him. For the first time this season we faced an opposition who had scored against us twice in the first round and we knew they would be tough to beat. The game was played under quite warm conditions despite the fact that it was 1 degrees at the start of the day. The first fifteen minutes saw neither side control the game for any long periods of time, until we were awarded our second short corner that we converted with a timely goal. Then with about ten minutes to go in the first half we slipped in our second goal through John Gradisen with his customary low down sweep on the left post. With a few too many missed chances we kept Newman in the game and just before half time they scored a goal against play through a turnover in our forward line and we were only one nil up at the half time break. The second half was as tough as the first half but we were creating many more chances to score than Newman only to narrowly miss or have the Newman keeper make some great saves. Our third goal came from a penalty flick that Andy superbly scored, it was awarded due to their fullback stopping the ball from going into the goals with his shin and this gave us a two goal breather again as the scores were at 3-1 in our favour. With only a few minutes passing by they scored their second goal through a penalty flick awarded for the ball being stopped by a foot on the goal line bringing the score to 3-2. Once again we attacked very hard and missed a few more chances before we received a short corner that was converted like the first short corner and the score was 4-2 to us. With only a few more minutes passing they scored their third goal through a goal mouth scuffle and we all watched as the ball dribbled over the line to put the scores at 4-3. We could have easily scored five goals in the second half but the hockey gods thought two more goals added to our score would be enough and they were but only just enough. The game finished with us winning four goals to three and we now have a side that we expect to playing off against in the finals. Thank you to John Heath for umpiring our game today and the great support from our spectators.
