WELL DONE WE ARE ALL PROUD OF YOU !!
Well done to all our members for making the effort to come into the rooms after training and Im sure you all agree the atmosphere being created by all the announcements is remarkable. Please just remember to keep the noise down when other team captains are having their spiel-its just a respect thing.
The next mission is to encourage those players not playing Saturdays at 2.00 or 3.30 to come down to the club for a short time to support the grass roots of our hockey club. You all will be surprised at the level of skill shown by our grass players and it makes for a good Saturday arvo’s viewing. The “Alfresco” is pumping, Nina’s Kitchen is creating culinary masterpieces and of course Brian’s Bar is well stocked with ample quantities of refreshments. Please make an effort to come down and support the Hawk’s. You all started your hockey on grass and Im sure these players would appreciate your attendance. Even if your game is early and you are finished and have a spare hour or so, come on down….. You will be pleasantly surprised !!!!!

10th July vs. Kwinana
Challenge Cup Round
Result 0-1
A rare opportunity to bring a pennant back to the club rooms this week with a Challenge Cup game against Kwinana. We knew we were in for a tough game and wanted to avenge our 0-2 defeat at the hands of Kwinana in the first round. The weather had looked threatening all day but remained fine for the duration of the game much the delight of the crowd that was gathering to support the Hawks.
We tried some positional changes this week knowing where Kwinana’s strengths were and wanted to be very solid early on at the back to resist the inevitable pressure. Troy joined me at fullback with Kyle taking on left half duties. Peter was available this week and slotted into centre forward.
As expected Kwinana came out hard and put a lot of pressure on us deep in defence for the 1st 10 minutes. The backline held up well with no clear shots at goal being allowed and 1 short corner being repelled. We started to apply some pressure of our own to return the favour to the Kwinana defence. Everyone was working very hard and the pressure on the opposition was starting to show as their tackling became more aggressive and the in fighting became more pronounced.
The teamwork displayed by the Hawks was some of the best this year and we generated a number of chances to score. Unfortunately we couldn’t quite convert and following some more solid defence we went into half time locked at 0-0.
The 2nd half saw more excellent hockey from all players in toughly contested game. Both teams generated some more chances but nothing resulted until about 15 minutes from the end of the half when Kwinana scored a field goal after some concerted pressure. For the rest of the half we pressed very hard but with could not get an equalizer. With about a minute to go a short corner was won but the resultant shot went just wide and there was no time left for any further significant play.
All up the boys should be very proud of the way they played and with so many youngsters in the team it was a great learning experience for them. We gave it everything but could not quite bring it home. A great team effort.
Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us.

17th July vs. Willeton
Result 1-3
We ventured down to the swampy bog pit known as Trevor Gribble Reserve in Willeton expecting to find Shrek, donkey, Fiona and Puss in Boots but instead came across a Willeton team very keen to defend their turf. We knew we had to adjust to the ground conditions to be competitive.
Gibbo led the team today in my absence and also took the fullback spot. Young Kyle joined him at the back and acquitted himself well during the game. Willo started strongly and showed they were really keen to avenge a defeat from early in the year. After only about 5 minutes we conceded a goal and were facing a strong challenge. After some settling down and adjustment to the conditions we started to press forward but the passes were getting cut off due to lack of punch in our passing and a willingness to try to take on one player too many rather than playing the early ball. Some concerted forward play from Willeton on a fast break led to a short corner being conceded not long before the break. The corner was converted and we headed into the break 0-2 down
At half time we discussed the changes we needed to make to our approach to the game on this field and came out determined to pull the 2 goals back. We tried to pass the ball earlier and make stronger passes and to everyone’s credit we played a much better brand of hockey in the 2nd half. Penetrating the D was proving difficult with Willeton defending their territory strongly. We managed to force a few shorts but couldn’t convert and despite some really solid play conceded a 3rd goal.
We didn’t drop our heads and struck back with a goal to Troy in open play very quickly. We pressed hard for the balance of the game but couldn’t break down the Willeton defense. A much better 2nd half than the first but we weren’t good enough to peg back the deficit. The guys put a good effort in today with everyone complaining of heavy legs at the end of the game.
A chance to rest up with an umpiring bye this week.
Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us.

FREO AGAIN
By Deb Clearwater
Saturday 17th July saw the Hawks heading off to Fremantle again this time to take on Fremantle Black. The weather gods were once again on our side and put on a fine day for the game (we all know how cold playing in Fremantle can be).
This week our player pool of 18 was severely depleted with a number of players unable to play. Special mention must be made though for “Scary” who turned up to play even though she had only got to bed at 5am that morning – and it must be said she played a blinder! And also a big thank you to Candice for donning the goalie gear again (especially after what Fremantle did to her last time! )
Another big thank you must also go out to Ange who helped us out and to Paula and Sharon (Kwinana) who umpired for us as Willetton Reds never turned up to umpire.
Dave decided to make a few key positional changes this week by putting Lou into Centre ford (first time playing in the front line), Kellie played a number of different positions (Inner, Centre Half, Right Half and fullback – 2 of those she had never played before), Megan was moved out onto the wing to give us some speed out wide and Deb was back in at Centre Half.
There were good points and bad points to our game this week. The positional changes seemed to help stop the issue we have been having with the opposition getting the ball and racing up the middle of the field – this week they had to take the ball wide to get it up the field. We also had some good runs up the middle ourselves and this week we scored a goal (well done Megan)– which was much needed for our confidence. We also had a number of scoring shots that we were unable to capitalise on and Fremantle got a couple of quick goals at the end of the game. Once again though the elusive short corner evaded us again, not from lack of trying but we just can’t seem to buy one.
It must not be forgotten that, although we lost the game 5 – 1 it was a vast improvement on the last time we played Fremantle Black who beat us 9-0 when they had no goalie and a player short.
Come on Hawks let’s see if we can convert all that hard work we’re doing to get the points on the board.

Southern River v Fremantle
Result 1 -1 Draw
Best on Ground – Gary
Last time we met Fremantle my report was edited due to content about the opposition and the umpiring. So to save the editor a job I will self edit. On the umpiring… BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANKETY BLANK. On three of the black and whites….BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANKETY BLANK.
Now onto the good stuff. Last week Fremantle won the Challenge Cup against Whitfords in a strongly fought game. We didn’t roll over the last time we played them and after two wins in a row, the Fives were fired up and ready to take it to the Magpies.
We set up our 4 3 3 1 combo expecting that it was going to be a defensive game on our part. Strangely enough, it was us attacking up the wings and defending in the centre. It was a bizarre experience, there wasn’t a lot of talking going on, but everyone seemed to know where to pass the ball and where their team mates were. I think it is a sign of the team gelling and getting used to having a rotating bench after starting the season without a full team.
Now we know Kenny is on some medication for his stuffed shoulder so we thought why not put him in charge of the bench. Well I want some of what he’s taking because after the first fifteen minutes we’d had twelve rotations and Fremantle were obviously more confused than me. Mind you when the Chief and I collided knee to temple I was the one seeing flying elephants.
Fremantle picked up two short corners in the first half and we had one. All the short corners were futile. It was half time and we were ready for a breather. Phil called the gang to order, read the riot act and we reset to the starting lineup. Freo were clearly rattled by the pressure that had been loaded on them by the forwards and by the defensive of triumphant of Phil, Gary and Paul D.
Fremantle having confused us for Dale in first half and not being used to being scoreless were ready to fire. However the right side combo drove us forward and once inside the circle Trenty and Dylan combined to give Tomahawk the first goal of the game. Unfortunately that brought out the uglies all round as we tried to stay in front and Fremantle tried to come back. At this point we reinsert BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANK BLANKETY BLANK as six players across the two teams discovered the colour green. I enjoyed mine which was issued for apparently inciting another player to slide tackle head first into my knee by smiling at him. Pretty sure I was given the cane for that at high school as well.
Anyway when we are down to seven players on the field the defence holds up well. Four minutes to go, and as everyone runs back on as Fremantle drive forward one more time. How hard it is to breathe though as we see them inside the D and as if in slow motion the ball gets through and scores are even. We mark time the whistle is blown and our fourth draw of the season is complete. Ahh the joy of snatching a draw from the jaws of victory.
Congratulations guys, absolute team effort, great skills displayed by all and proof that we are “Moving Forward”.
Match Report: Mens Provisional 2 Black

17th of July vs Rockingham
Result: 2-0
Returning from the midseason break, the Southern River Hawks’ Provisional Two team weren’t looking too good with only two wins under their belt. So this week’s game against Rockingham, down in Rockingham, was a must win for any chance to make it to the finals.
The Hawks team was fairly slim this week with two players out of action, meaning the eleven that made the long trip down to the Rockingham turf had to be prepared to fight it out with minimal rest. If the opposition was anything to come by, a Rockingham player with his front teeth missing, the Hawks had to make sure they kept their composure for any chance to take away the points.
Sun facing the Hawks, the Hawks took early procession of the ball. The powerhouse of the Hawks, missing in previous games, started to come to fruition with total domination from the not-as Southern River team. However no matter how much the Hawks continued to attack they couldn’t break the stronghold of the Rockingham defence.
The constant attack almost ended up being the Hawks downfall when Rockingham missed an open goal after a ball streamed side on to the Hawks’ goals towards an unmarked player. Being so close to going down, the Hawks turned up the heat and went back into attack. It was twenty minutes into the first half until the Hawks got their first goal with Ross Smith smashing the ball from a difficult angle on the edge of the penalty circle into the back of the goals. Ross’s goal was the only goal the Hawks would score in the first half.
With the start of the second half the opportunities started to come with the Hawks even more determined to increase their lead. The second half saw some quality play from Luke Giblett (promoted from the two’s), Lee Hansord, and Tim Bowman, all ensuring they controlled the mid field. This helped gift Ross Smith and Jonathon Lanzon a few chances, however the nail in the coffin came from Lee on a short corner. With a perfect push out, a perfect trap, and a perfect strike Lee gave the Hawks their second goal and with the final whistle following shortly after the three points the Hawks came to collect.
Over all it was a good game with quality play from all involved. In particular a shout out goes to Quinton Fraser who did a fine job for his first time in fullback.
