THE GAMES
This week the U15 A’s travelled up the freeway to unfamiliar territory
to take on 3rd placed whitfords.
It was bitterly cold and with dew still on the grass as the game got
underway with the Hawks pressing ever forward. A solid Whitfords
defence held us back and it was only a matter of time before they
realized we had come to play and took us a bit more seriously.
A consistent Whitfords forward line attacked our defensive circle and
were rewarded with a great number of short corners. Our defences were
besieged time and time again and every time we managed to repel them.
A near perfect set play from defence, down the wing and a switch
across goals to a lurking Mitch saw the Hawks hit the backboard first.
Whitfords were stunned but rallied and were able to post their reply
shortly before the half.
The air over the half time huddle was blue as Heathy let the kids know
exactly how he thought the game was progressing. A few pointers here,
a spray there and a finish with some positves set the tone for the
second half.
The Hawks attacked strongly but the opportunities went begging. Whitfords
on the other hand ran hard to set up players and if it wasnt for the
superb goal keeping of Zak we would have been in trouble.
Whitfords did manage to slot another away towards the end of the
second half to finish winning 2-1
We have now played all the top of the ladder teams and have been very
competitive in each game, unlucky in at least two. The kids are
starting to get used to the pace of the grade and will surely post a
win very very soon.

Next week we play Newman Knights at Joondalup
Score 2-1 Loss
Goals Mitch 1
Votes Zak, Jayden, Jess.

A HARD FOUGHT GAME
Deb Clearwater

This week (Saturday 19th June) the Hawks travelled down to Fremantle to take on Fremantle White on their home ground. The Fremantle ground is renowned for being bitterly cold but luckily for us the weather was actually pleasant for playing hockey.
After not playing for a couple of weeks due to the long weekend and an umpiring bye the girls were keen to get back on the field. We had a full squad of 16 players and our coach on there to help out which was great.
Fremantle are known for their aggressive play and did not surprise us by playing any differently.
Southern River took the hit off and started their attack on the very experienced Fremantle side. The game was a fast running game with the ball going from one end of the field to the other very quickly especially as Fremantle had a couple of players that sat up very high into the attacking 25 and with their big hitting backs could turn the game very quickly.
The game was very evenly matched for the first 15 – 20 minutes of the game with Southern River’s forwards attacking Fremantle and our backs holding out Fremantle’s attacks with some great defence. Deb hurt her calf again and had to go off within the first 5 – 10 minutes of the game.
Fremantle scored their first goal after some continuous play inside Southern River’s defensive 25. The goal was an excellent goal with the ball being “smacked” from just inside the D at an angle that was just too good to stop. They then caught Southern River by surprise and scored again within a couple of minutes to go up 2-0.
The Hawks regrouped and continued to defend and attack however unable to put the points of the board. Nicole took a ball to the nose/forehead and had to come off but thankfully there was no blood and she got the ice onto straight away although did not return to the game afterwards. Fremantle scored their third goal just before half time to lead 3 – 0.
Dave had encouraging words with the girls at half time and pushed the point that they were hitting the ball to Fremantle’s flat and he wanted them to attempt to change that in the second half.
The Hawks took the field in the second half determined to put the fight up to Fremantle. And they succeeded in doing this with a number of attacks on the Fremantle goal and again some amazing defence at the back. With about 15 minutes to go the score was still 3 – 0.
Fremantle then subbed a young boy into the game. He was very skilled but even so our girls were very worried about hurting him. After some heated words on the sideline, which was then smoothed over, Fremantle pulled him from the field and the game continued as before.
The game was a very fast paced game which tested the fitness of both teams. With about 10 minutes to go Fremantle scored their 4th goal of the game after a period of sustained attack on Southern River’s goal. Diana, as goalie, played an amazing game and I’m sure the score would have been significantly higher if it wasn’t for her efforts in goal.
The game was stopped with about 5 minutes to go to apply emergency first aid to one of the Hawks who was having major difficulty breathing. I am pleased to say she recovered and watched the rest of the game from the sidelines.
Unfortunately, I hate to say this, due to some poor umpiring decisions Fremantle scored their 5th goal in the last seconds of the game to take the win 5 -0.
Although the Hawks lost the game they played really well. They were up against a very experienced team that beat the top team last week and was sitting 3rd on the ladder prior to this game. The goals that the Fremantle team scored were excellent goals that even a more experienced team would have struggled to stop. Our girls can hold their heads high for a game well played. The other encouraging thing was how many girls stepped up their game and showed how much they have learned and improved since the start of the season.
GO HAWKS!

Match Report: Mens Provisional 2 Black
20th of June vs Curtin Pirates
Result: 3-0
Report: Jon Lanzon
This week the Southern River Provisional 2 Men’s team took a road trip for the first time in the season down to one of their “home ground” turfs, Rockingham, to take on bottom of the ladder, Curtin Pirates. After hearing the Two’s were successful on this turf the day before the boys of the Ones team were hoping to follow suit.
Following some unfortunate occurrences from the previous week the Ones side this week was slightly altered with promotions to Robert DeWind, James Gradisen, and Guy Hoskin. John Gradisen also came down to lend a hand with running the bunch.
With all the pre-game formalities done, the boys hit to the field with the confidence of a team that meant business. Following the starting whistle the Hawks quickly stole possession and attacked with an almighty force. After a constant bombardment of offence the Hawks were finally awarded their first goal near the end of the first half after James Gradisen showed his skill weaving around Curtin players then passing the ball onto Tim Bowman on the penalty spot who slapped the ball into the back of the net.
One nil up the Hawks continued to ask for more goals in the remaining time of the first half. However, time got the better of them and the first half ended with Tim’s sole goal the difference between the two teams. With some encouraging words from coach and captain the Hawks were ferocious at the start of the second half. Captain Quinton Fraser showed his sneaky side taking the hit off by dribbling the ball into Curtin’s half taking on players as they came. After multiple passes back and forth Quinton was in shooting position with a reverse stick shot that smashed hard into the frame of the goals only to ricochet away from the goals rather than go in.
Still one nil up the Hawks tried their best to increase their lead. They were finally awarded halfway through the second half when a hard push into the penalty circle was deflected by Dan Mckeown into the back of the net. Following the second goal the Hawks continued to display the dominance in attack. The third goal came after Coach Lee Hansord skillfully dribbled the ball into the edge of the penalty circle, striking hard on a tight angle and sending the ball into the back of the net.
The Hawks were unlucky not to score more goals by the time the game finished. With the final whistle declaring a good win to the Hawks and a good example of how well the team play together putting to bed the troubles that haunted the Hawks the previous week. Next week against Subs will be a tough game, however the boys are confident they can increase their lead to break it into the top 4.
Next Game vs Suburban at UWA at 7:00pm on the 27th of June.

Challenge Cup here we come?

Result 2-3
Another important game this week with a win or draw guaranteeing a Challenge Cup spot. We had some changes in the line up this week with Dave V out with a bad knee and Kurtis missing with tonsillitis. Young Brandon from the U/15 filled in at GK and acquitted himself really well. Eggy was available again from the 2’s to strengthen the mid field and Tyson was back after exams. Owen slotted into fullback to free Gibbo up on right half and Chad had a start at right wing in a number of positional changes this week.
Unfortunately we started poorly and were soon under pressure. A lack of tackling pressure opened up some midfield gaps and Pirates were pressing forward hard and forced a number of short corners. They converted 1 early on then a really soft call by the ref awarded another which was also put away. We were 0-2 down after 20 minutes and on the back foot. We started to respond to the situation and produced easily our best hockey of the half for the next 15minutes. Some near misses resulted followed by a short corner which Troy put away. 1-2 down at half time was a lot better than it could have been and we were still in the game.
There was optimism at half time that we had turned the corner in the game and with continued pressure we could get away with the points. Some nice ball movement started in the 2nd half with the half and forward lines combining nicely. Our efforts were rewarded with a great goal put away by Rusty after some concerted build up play. At 2-2 the game was in the balance and a frenetic period followed. Pirates pressed very hard and put the defence under real pressure. We lost a bit of our structure and reverted to longer passing during this time and lot a bit of control during this period of the game. Some clearances from within the D and nice saves by Brandon kept the scores locked. During this time a goal mouth scrimmage resulted in some heated words and a green card each for me and the Pirates forward.
Pirates continued to press and forced another short corner which they put away after they got the ball to an unmarked player off to the side. We had some chances on the counter attack but couldn’t quite convert. 2-3 down was the end resulted after an intense high pressure game of hockey.
Maybe a Challenge Cup to play in a couple of weeks depending on goal difference. We will need to team together a bit better to be competitive in this but at least we are in with a chance of getting there.
Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us. Looking forward to seeing everyone down to training on Thursday night. Next game vs. Freo away at 2.00pm.

THE KITCHEN SINK
Today’s game was played under quite warm conditions and those conditions were made harder by us only being able to field eleven players. We started the game with confidence but like last week we were playing against a “stacked” side. Victoria Park threw the kitchen sink at us today but we absorbed everything they had and converted enough of our chances to make the difference. It took us a long time to score our first goal but it was well deserved and we iced the game late in the second half with a third goal. We linked up better this week making the opposition chase us consistently, but the Vic Park side had a lot more run in them than last time and continued to press back against us. We missed Heathy and his ball carrying skills but we still managed many productive forward thrusts. The majority of the game saw our midfield and forward line linking up very well with very good passing that allowed John Trent to accumulate a hat-trick goal haul. And look out for Arthur as he is on the verge of a goal scoring feast with possibly four missed chances today. We finished the game with a three nil result to us and we look forward to playing the very strong Newman side next week at home. I would like to thank Dave Frost for umpiring us today he controlled the game very well and especially when the game became a bit heated.

THE GAMES

Match Report: Mens Provisional 2 Black

13th of June vs UWA

Result: 3-1

Once again the Southern River Hawks’ Mens Ones saw themselves enter the pitch following a successful win from the powerful Men’s Twos team. The Ones were looking forward to make the game a back to back Southern River win on the Melvile turf. To do this though, they had to do over UWA. A feat that is never easy for the Hawks.

The game started with many members of the club present to watch both the Twos and then the Ones battle it out. The Ones, full of confidence, started the game on fire winning both the toss and early possession. After five minutes of starting the game persistence prevailed with the Hawks being awarded their first short corner. Although not normally successful with their shorts, the Hawks hit the lead with a clever tap from Coach Lee Hansord to Ben Cullen on the left post. With instinct Ben ensured the ball was in the goals.

The game re-started and with it UWA took their turn to hold on to the ball. Almost like a mirror image after another five minutes UWA were awarded a short corner which they successfully took advantage of to level the score, one all.

The Hawks and UWA continued to battle it out for the lead. The next goal came from UWA after the ball was raised into a Hawks player, following a UWA shot, before being deflected into the Hawk’s guarded goals. Most people would have expected a penalty awarded against the defenders in these situations but the umpire decided to bypass that and award the goal directly.

After an eventful first half the second half started 2-1 in UWA’s favour. The second half had its events as well, unfortunately the events were for the wrong reason. With most of the second half complete UWA scored their third goal (more devious than the last) after a deflection by UWA well outside the D was raised dangerously into the D towards Keeper Brad Kneebone, who let it go through safely into the goals. Of course, had Brad known the umpire was clueless about where the ball was actually deflected he would have made an effort to clear the “dangerous” ball. As it would happen the goal was awarded and the Hawks were awarded a red card to one of their players following a heated discussion.

The Hawks were close to gaining a complimentary goal in the dying minutes of the second half after Jonathon Lanzon placed the ball wide of the UWA keeper with the only task remaining to push the ball into the vacant goals. Unfortunately Jonathon was pushed off the ball, by a UWA player, before taking the opportunity and with no penalty being awarded against UWA the game ended sadly with the Hawks going down 3-1. Overall the team played good hockey with the loss seeming a little hard done by.

Next Game vs CT Pirates at Rockingham at 11:30am on the 20th of June.

Second Round

By Barry Romaro

Today we traveled to the picturesque Melvista Park in Nedlands to play Riverside Lions. The first thing we noticed was that this was hardly the same side we played in round one this year as there were at least five new players and we recognized that they were midweek division one players. We were ready for the challenge and this was easily the hardest game we have played this year with the Lions having strength in all positions over the field. The game was played at a frenetic pace for the first twenty minutes with neither side gaining any ascendancy or scoring a goal. The Lions had three chances to score only to be denied by Rob on the last line of defense, the Lions could have easily taken the lead at this point if rob had not been so switched on. It was not until we had all started to run out of energy that we finally scored a goal just before the half time break. We went into the second half with our one goal advantage but we did not look like we would hold onto it due to us hitting the post four times and the Lions keeper being superb in goals, stopping everything we hit at him. Finally we broke through with our second goal and this woke the Lions up and they attacked relentlessly only to turn over the ball at a crucial moment allowing us to take advantage and score our third goal. A positive thing to come out of this game today was the way our forwards worked to try and keep the ball trapped in our attacking part of the field and Rob’s positive talking from defense telling us who to mark and who to leave. We ended up winning the game three goals to nil with Heathy picking up his second yellow card in consecutive games, so we will be enjoying a few free drinks after next weeks game thanks to John. A very special mention goes to Colin Stewart and Martin Hickey for putting their hands up to umpire a half each of today’s game and to our spectators who came along and shouted encouragement to us throughout the game.

Match report:  Metro 3 Gold

12th June vs. WASP’s

Challenge Cup here we come?

Result 3-1

The Metro 3’s were the only team at home this week, playing the  2nd placed WASP’s. A win was vital for us to keep up our chances of getting a Challenge Cup berth in a few weeks time.  We had a full complement of players to choose from this week and the addition of Eggy from the 2’s to strengthen the mid field.

WASPS’s were struggling for numbers at the start but a delay of a few minutes helped them get a team together. We went off for a run and got pumped up for a strong early effort.

Fortunately we started very strongly and controlled play from the outset. A forward break from WASP’s early on was repelled and thereafter the Hawks dominated. Superior teamwork and ball movement was quickly rewarded with a goal to Eggs after a period of sustained pressure. Not long later Troy slotted another goal from a penalty corner conversion, continuing the excellent habit he has gotten into this year. This was helped by an earlier break by the defense leaving only 3 defenders for the short, which we took full advantage of.

Rusty copped some friendly fire on the knee from a lofted 16 yard hit and had to sit out some time and gained a really impressive bruise, complete with full dimple marks from the ball. I owe you a beer on Thursday night Rusty!

WASP’s were getting frustrated and continually verballed the umpires throughout the half. Our boys kept quiet (for the most part) and didn’t get sucked in by the backchat. At half time we had a well deserved 2-0 lead.

We knew we had to maintain the pressure in the 2nd half but in the first minute a WASP’s break earned a short corner and the resulting goal mouth scrimmage led to a penalty stroke as the controlling umpire noticed a hand moving the ball rather than a stick! A fair call and the stroke was taken well leaving Dave no chance so after 1 minute we had lost half of our lead.

What followed was an intense 30 minutes of hockey where the Hawks displayed some real fighting spirit and excellent pressure hockey. The whole team displayed the Hawks mantra of constant pressure on the opposition, and some of the WASP’s players with good skills were getting very frustrated with the attention.

The 2nd half was also notable for the first 2 minute green card rests for our team for the year. The first was for me living the fullbacks mantra of only the ball or the player is getting past me not both when the ump didn’t like the tackle on a forward streaming towards goal and 1 for Rusty which can only be because the umpire started to listen to all the complaints from WASP’s and simply thought that was the only way they would keep quiet for the rest of the game!

Only a couple of minutes from the end Troy (in a BOG performance) slotted in the sealer after about every forward had had a shot on goal  but he was the one to put it away.

A great team effort by all in a really enjoyable contest. Onto next week where a draw or win secures a challenge cup berth.

Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us. Looking forward to seeing everyone down to training on Thursday night.  Next game vs.  Pirates WASP’s away at 3.30pm.

Clear skies at PHS1 oversaw the A reserve juniors take on 2nd placed

CT Pirates. 2nd from top against us—– 2nd from bottom.

Filling in this week were Keelie Hoskin and Tobias Dixey from the U13

squad.

The game was its usual ebbing and flowing of play from goal to goal

and we held the Pirates quite well. Mitch finally opened our account with a fantastic tomahawk from just inside the circle. Nice effort Mitch!!!

The opposition pressed and were rewarded with a goal to tie things up

and the game was on. Just before half time Aidan copped a severe knock to his right knee and had to sit the rest of the game out. This left us with no reserves.

The second half played out much the same as the first until the

Pirates scored again. Staring down the barrel at another loss the

Hawks rallied with Jayden playing a much harder game.

Our defence held strong and with the game nearing conclusion Tobias

Dixey pounced on a loose ball from a short corner and scored our

reply.

Minutes later the siren sounded to herald a tie.

These kids have been steadily improving week after week and there is

so much more to come.

Southern River v Whitfords

Result 2 – 0 defeat

So this week we organised our passports, visas and had our inoculations in preparation for the trip to South Geraldton for a game against league leaders, Whitfords.  After getting through passport control, passing a few brown paper bags to the border guards and handing over Ports for a full body cavity search we arrived at the grounds to find that a the appropriately named Macdonald reserve that there is actually nothing to eat or drink.

So game on and we settle into our new positions that have resulted from the additional numbers granted to us last week. Thirty seconds into the game and the Whitfords left wing is sitting in the D and firing one at goals. He gets away from us three more times in the first ten minutes before we lock him down. Gary and Kenny have a good shot at holding off the attack but an attack through the right inner penetrates and is into the goal and we are one down.

The team tightens up the defence, we can read Whitfords set plays but they still keep doing them.  Next play for us is get some penetration and we hit hard up the right wing and through the left inside. Phil gets some great balls through but the Whitfords defenders are on top of him like flies on road kill. Late in the first half, Phil and Bitters are deep in Whitfords D and have the goalie on toast but as the midget said to the hooker…there was just an inch in it.

Roll on the second half and we are really aggressive.  We have the right side of the field locked up and have more than ten entries into the Whitfords D with eight free hits inside the 25. Unfortunately for us, missed shots and no short corner awards leave us scoreless and vulnerable as we have flooded the 25.

Whitfords get a few lucky run on’s when we have flooded and unfortunately I have to perform the Captains duty and fire off the holy grail on some young bloke to stop him hitting the D. The only result and the fair one was the yellow card and 5min rest break.  Looks like a carton of Wife Beater is on it’s way to the club bar.   Kristian becomes a Sherman tank and takes on player after and player and with Army and Bitters continues the assault.

Same old problem though, flooding followed by run on’s and a lack of legs to save the attack and Whitfords get three short corners and a series of longs and inside 25 free hits. The short corners result in nothing due to our hard running but on one of the inside 25’s, Whitfords break through and get a shot on goals and put it through the keeper.

Late in the second half one of the Whitfords players throws a bit of body into the game, comes off second best against me and decides to hit me with his stick.  Not a smart move but cool heads prevailed and his red card should be a reminder about how far is too far.

In the end not a bad effort against the top team.  I can see some serious good play coming out most players, improved fitness levels and am enjoying having the extra beef in to line up.  Best on ground (and I don’t vote) was Georgie.

HAWKEYE VOL5 ED 6

June 1st, 2010 by Janson Hoskins

THE POSITIVES

We will once again open with a positive. Club President John Heath put a call out last week for some volunteers to come down to the club on Saturday mornings to help out with the junior contingent including umpires. Usually when the “ umpiring” word gets mentioned people bolt the other way and find reasons not to do it. Not so for us Hawkers:

A special mention to Rob De Wind, Dave (the Gibbo) Gibbs, Paul Dixie, Martin Hickey, Greg Button and Geoff Foster for giving up their valuable time to make sure our future stars are looked after.

Well done to these people and thank you on behalf of the junior players, coaches and parents.

Whilst on the subject of junior home games, you should see how popular the kitchen is with a serving of hot coffee, toasted sandwiches or bacon and eggs on the menu each week…..

THE BATTLES

Match Report: Mens Provisional 2 Black

22nd of May vs Hale

Result: 3-3

Entering the pitch following the Two’s impressive 3-1 win the Southern River Provisional 2 Black team were itching to take on second placed Hale. The day was a cold, wet, and windy afternoon. However the weather was the least of the One’s worry, with the biggest concern being that with 10 minutes to go four players were still unaccounted for, Including the Keeper!

Thankfully with minutes to spare the Hawks were lined up with all players present and ready for the starting whistle. With the Hawks starting with the ball, procession was held and the Hawks dominated early in attack. Five minutes on the clock and opportunities to score, the Hawks were awarded a short corner which Tim Bowman didn’t hesitate to take advantage of putting the ball into the back of the net as the main corner battery hitter.

One nil up and the game only just starting the Hawks were still goal hungry. The second goal didn’t take long to follow with the Hawks being awarded another short corner which once again Tim Bowman finished off in the back of the net on his first shot. It seemed like deja-vu when shortly after the second restart the Hawks saw themselves preparing for another short corner. This time Lee Hansord accepted the push out, which he sent to Jonathon Lanzon on the right post, who then sent the ball across the face of goals for Ben Culler on the other post to finish off into the back of the net.

With less then a quarter of the game complete the Hawks saw themselves with a nifty three nil lead. At that point no matter how hard they tried the Hawks ended up walking off the pitch at half time with no change in the score line. However the Hawks were rather confident with the position they were in.

The second half started like a bang for the down and out Hale who hit the Hawks hard with a never-die attitude. After a constant flury of attack Hale were given a short corner which out of no where they took full advantage off putting the ball into the back of the net. Now 3-1 up the Hawks tried their best to hold Hale back, unfortunately Hale were lucky when a block from Carl Bowman on the goal line was stopped by Carl’s foot instead of his stick giving Hale a prime penalty flick opportunity.

Hale stepped up to take the penalty stroke, up against reliable keep Brad Kneebone in goals. Unfortunately for the Hawks the flick was good giving Brad no chance to pull off a save. For the fifth restart the Hawks was slowly losing the unlosable lead, with the worst happening ten minutes before the end of the game when Hale evened up the score three all. At three all the Hawks finally switched on, however no matter how hard they tried they couldn’t pull that match winning fourth goal. The game ended three all with both teams walking away with one point each and the Hawks still trying to get into the top four.

Next Game vs Westside Wolves at PHS at 7:00pm on the 28th of May.

UNDER 11 7/8 GOLD TEAM – COACH – Gail Cracknell

SOUTHERN RIVER 5  – CANNING WHITE 0

The Under 13s Gold under 11 team played a great game against Canning White on Saturday 22nd winning 5-0. Despite pouring rain and having no subs, they produced some fine on-field action and worked together as a team brilliantly. Every player made solid contributions to the game even Beck in the goal that mostly had little to do except watch her team mates pushing in the other direction. Jessica in centre half scored the first goal early in the game and continued pushing forward confidently setting up goals throughout. Daniel Angel-Townley played a strong game in centre forward scoring 3 goals.

Emily in the wing finished off with her usual great positioning by seeing

through the final goal from the post. Tim, Isobel and Brittney kept a rock solid defence at the back line whilst Carl, Tayla, Daniel, Brittany Jasmine on the other wing all worked together showing a range of skills and determination in keeping the ball in the right half and setting up goals.

Well done guys – position, passing, teamwork and great fun. Hats off to both teams for excellent sportsmanship a positive game.

Thanks to Gavin for umpiring

Thanks John Townley and thanks for being a Cracknelling good Coach!

TWO IN A ROW

By Deb Clearwater

Saturday the 22nd May saw the clouds open up and the rain come down in buckets full but luckily it stopped just in time for the Lady Hawks to take on Canning at our home grounds.

This week we had a full team along with 5 subs.  We also saw Deb and Lou welcomed back into the team after injury and illness.  This would mean there were, once again, some positional changes and that the interchange bench would have to be managed well.  Thanks to Frosty who took on that job for us until Dave could get there.

Southern River won the toss and took the ball.  The game was underway.  As with previous weeks the ball moved from one end of the field to the other regularly.  Unlike previous weeks though Southern River had the majority of the attack with numerous shots into the D but were unlucky not to get the deflections required to make the goals count.  We did however get a couple of short corners, the very first resulted in the new rule regarding breaking being called into play and a Canning player sent back to halfway.  The Lady Hawks took advantage of this with Jo hitting the ball out to Kellie who controlled the ball and took a shot a goal, this was deflected by the Canning goalie where Deb and Megan both went for the rebound some great calling between the two saw Megan leave the ball and Deb punch it in for the first goal of the game.

During one of our attacking moves Robyn when for a ball and slipped on the wet grass falling badly resulting in her having to be carried off the field with what is suspected to be a torn thigh muscle.

The game continued this way with Southern River attacking Canning’s goal but unable to put further points on the board.  Half time saw the Lady Hawks up by 1.

Kellie came off the field at half time after receiving a ball to the ankle which required icing before she could return.  With Kellie off the field Lenni moved Jo into the position of Centre half, Jo was then moved back to her normal position and Lou took over the role.  Shortly after this change  Southern River got another short corner which saw Jo hitting out to Lou who stopped the ball and sent a fantastic shot  into the back of the goal unfortunately the ball was just short of the D when she hit it resulting in the goal being disallowed.

The game had many interruptions due to Robyn being hurt, a Canning player having numerous problems with her breathing and one of the Canning players being sent off after words with the umpire.

The Lady Hawks worked together well moving the ball up the field, on one occasion though an excellent breakaway move my Teri was brought undone by her feet.  Devastating as it was for Teri who was unchallenged at the time it did look funny from the sideline (sorry Teri had to comment J ).

Then with less than 10 minutes to go Canning scored a goal against the passage of play which shocked the Lady Hawks and had them thinking they had let the game slip away.  But they were not going to give up without a fight and took the attack to Canning once again.  With less than 4 minutes on the clock the Lady Hawks were awarded a free hit from the sideline.  Deb played on and ran down the line towards the backline then fired a hard cross into the middle of the D where the Southern River forwards where waiting.  Lenni had a shot at goal which was stopped by Canning right on the line and pushed back out then again some great calling resulted in Lenni leaving the ball for Jo who flicked it into the goal to not only score the winning goal but also her first ever goal.

Southern River came away with the win 2 –1.  From the way the game was played the score should have been higher but a win is a win and it was also the Lady Hawks second win in two weeks so they were elated to say the least.

The team is improving as every week goes by and they are now in the top 4 of their grade.  The challenge now is to continue improving, to continue working on various moves and to keep that top 4 spot.

Next week we take on Kwinana in Kwinana – we look forward to the challenge!

Come on Lady Hawks!

PS: Thanks to the umpires for filling in at short notice.

Metro 4

Southern River v Joondalup Lakers

Home Game at Southern River

Firstly let me start with a Shakespearean ode to Trenty who we haven’t managed to help boost his statistics this year in his two appearances for us!

O Trenty, Trenty, wherefore art thou goals Trenty? Denied by thy defenders, and refused thy easy shots. Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn at umps, and he’ll no longer be a forward…’Tis but thy stick that is thy enemy, thou art thyself, though, usually a goal freak. What is goal? It is nor hand, nor foot, nor arm, nor face, nor any other part belonging to a Hawk. O be some other name. What’s in a name? That which we call a reverse stick by any other name would smell as sweet; so scoring would, were he not Trenty called, retain that dear perfection which he owes without that title. Trenty doff thy name, and for that name which is no part of thee, score us some goals!

Now for some something less homosapien… Here is a match report.  Our core players turned up once again and we welcomed back Ports body and Phil’s lungs. The whole team was fired up and ready to put on a show for the home crowd.  We were bolstered by Martin, Trenty and Baz who had a forfeit induced availability.  We invited Gibbo to run the bench for us and he did an excellent job. Thanks Gibbo.

It was clear from the outset that Lakers were a very fit team.  The skill base amongst the older players was excellent and where the younger guys lacked skills they had some good running ability.  They hadn’t travelled from south Geraldton to lose and made it clear with strong play over the ball, a great short ball game and plenty of contact.

Our back line held up strong and Kenny and Phil controlled the centre of the field. Neil and Phil shared sweepers duty and we powered up the right side with Ravi and Army owning the ground.  The rain fell in the first half but it had little impact on the ground or players.  The next seventy minutes is basically a blur but in short it involved Lakers scoring and us equalizing off of a Neil Worland short corner Howitzer. Then they scored again and we got a little grumpy as they pounded into our defensive 25 again and again. So 2-1 down with 5 minutes to go we picked up a succession of short corners and on the last of these a mistrap by Neil slips through to Brad who after realizing he has actually managed to stop the ball for the first time in the game, passes back to a now open Neil who deftly fires into the goal and equalizes for us.

After a never to be repeated celebration we slipped through the last 90 seconds of the game and hit the bar!  So 2-2 but Trenty… what happened, aren’t we good enough for you anymore??

Best on Ground drawn by Ravi, Neil and Army.  Well done guys.

U/15,S

What better way to spend a sunshine soaked sunday morning than

watching the Hawks V OGMHC on grass at Melville? Well there are a

number of things that come to mind, but with these kids you know its

always going to be time well spent anyway.

Once again the Hawks had to rely on the younger brigade to fill in

with Chelsey Heath and a young newcomer named Jesse Ryan stepping up

from the U13s.

The first half was played out with OGMHC attacking strong but being

repelled repeat ably. They eventually managed to slot 2 away whilst at

the other end Jesse in his first game at this level smashed the ball

from just inside the circle for a fantastic goal. Not bad for his

first effort. Shortly after Mitch chimed in with one of his own to tie

things up at the break.

No Heathy tirade this week, a calm approach outlining what was

expected and the fact that we were making them look good with

positional errors and not manning up when needed.

The second half was an arm wrestle for scoring opportunities but OGMHC finally broke through the tiring hawks to score their third.

Not going down without a fight the hawks pressed on with many forays

into the attacking zone but not being able to finish off cleanly.

The whistle blew as the ball was ever so close to tieing up the game

but alas not to be. The first time in three seasons that this group has lost two in a row, but they will be better off for the experience.

This week Jayden had the misfortune of suffering an umpires wrath as

he was yellowed for “language”.

Goals…Mitch and Jesse with one each

Southern River  Vs Rockingham

29/5/2010

LATE ARRIVALS

By Barry Romaro

Today we traveled a very long distance down to Lark hill just beyond Port Kennedy to play Rockingham. The distance and time to travel caught most of us out with only seven of us there and ready to play with only five minutes to the start time. We managed to have ten players for the start after the umpires allowed us an extra five minutes to delay the start of the match. Rockingham moved the ball very well right from the outset of the game. Our defense was under pressure for the first seven to ten minutes due to us having to clear the ball under pressure only to have it come straight back at us. The last of our playing group showed up and we started to settle down with more direct and relaxed passes. We scored the first goal after some superior ball movement by our midfield and forward line. Rockingham were very quick to respond with a scrappy goal that was first well saved by Rob but our defense was unable to clear the ball from the circle before the opposition scored. We rallied together and after many chances we scored a second goal to go two one up at half time. During the half time break we talked about making a few changes to our short corners and also the way we would attack the circle and these strategies worked well. We managed to slot home two more goals in the second half but Rocky battled very hard and counter attacked us relentlessly only to be stopped by our rugged defense. The final score was 4-1 win to us and proves we can win games without Trenty scoring although he was off to a night in Mandurah so he probably did. A very special mention goes to Lee Hansord who umpire us very well and another thank you to both Rob for filling in at short notice.

Goal scorers:  Andy Smythe 2, John Gradisen 1, John heath 1

Best players Colin Stewart 3 votes, Andy Smythe 2 votes, Martin Hickey 1 vote.

Match report:  Metro 3 Gold

29th May vs. Kwinana

Battered Bruised and Beaten

Result 0-2

The Metro 3’s were away to Kwinana this week. After last weeks win on forfeit we were looking forward to playing a “live” game against a tough opposition. Kwinana had played in the last 2 grand finals winning 1 of them and we knew they were going to provide a physical contest. Two very late withdrawals meant we had the bare minimum number of players as opposed to the 15 for the opposition. Many thanks to Luke Frost for filling in as a reserve at the last minute which managed to provide some interchange relief for us.

We started slowly once again despite us discussing this issue before the game and it continues to be a bad habit this year.  Kwinana dominated play early on and had the ball inside our attacking circle on a number of occasions but some resolute defense and very good goal keeping from Dave V kept them out.  Eventually we started to get some of the ball and after a free hit mid field Rusty took off with the ball, taking advantage of the stationary Kwinana defense and waltzed past everyone to crack a goal in past the keeper. Confusion reigned and it was eventually agreed that the ball should be called back to the where the free hit was awarded, thus avoiding the break out of World War III.

This may have proved to be critical in the outcome of the game but was certainly very good sportsmanship from the Hawks and is to be applauded by all.  The rest of the first half was a tough physical contest. The Kwinana defense that had conceded only 3 goals to this stage of the season proved very difficult to penetrate and we went in a half time 0-0.

We were still in the game at half time despite Kwinana playing the better hockey. We talked about being strong over the ball and being solid in the tackles and continuing to work hard.

The second half proved to be as physical as the 1st with Kwinana coming off 2nd best in the physical stakes with 1 dislocated finger (he coolly slotted the finger back into place and kept on playing) and some broken glasses and a blood nose for their right wing who foolishly decided to try to run through yours truly at fullback. Our younger players in Kurtis, Brian, Andy and Kyle were acquitting themselves really well in this environment and will gain a lot from their exposure to tough seniors hockey and will be better prepared for when we next play Kwinana. In the end we conceded a couple of goals in the 2nd half after some intense forward pressure from the opposition who deserved to win.

Despite the loss we played some very good hockey today and can be pleased with the effort put in all game. We will bounce back after the bye next week as we take on another team likely to be in the top 3 in  WASPs.

Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us. Looking forward to seeing everyone down to training on Thursday night.  Next game vs.  WASP’s at home at 2pm.

Match Report

Metro 4

Southern River v Dale

Final Score Southern River 4 defeated Dale 1

Ok on Wednesday as far as I knew we had seven players available. On Thursday once we did the rounds of text messages and ringins we were up to nine and somehow 13 minutes before the whistle we had 15 including three guys who are new to the club.

Consulting with the Oracle aka Phil we came up with a cunning plan to run the bench which lasted well until the second of the interchanges but nonetheless got us though the game.

My prematch speech went something like this…If we lose to Dale then Heathy will make you all pull your pants down and run around the club rooms… I followed this with…”we have reserves, so if I see anyone not chasing the ball and running back to defend I will send you off for the rest of the game.”  Pretty inspirational stuff and it seemed to work.  We moved away from our trademark defending rover to a traditional 5,3,2,1 field and commenced operations.

Our forward line proved their manliness with more penetrations than a night in Bangkok but the forwards were perplexed by a goalie that actually attacked rather than defended.  The whole team from defense to the wings had one thing on the mind…pants up and goals scored.  We had 11 short corners in all for the game.  The two variations that we have perfected now were increased to four as a result of scoring goal from a missed trap last week and the rotations went well.  We were hampered by the slow heavy grass but still were able to let Howitzer kill another back board.  Against any other goalie this season he would have converted 6 of the corners.  Testament to Dale’s yellow giant. Note to Heathy here…recruit Dale’s Metro 4 goalie for one of our senior teams.

Late in game, the barefoot wonder from Dale got away from us and put one through Port’s legs.  No excuses except, it was probably karma for a few interesting decisions that went our way earlier in the game. So in the end great goals from Army, Phil, Howitzer aka Chief, and the mystery light skinned Azza.

A big welcome to Kristian, Dylan and Gary into the team.

Best on ground Neil Worland.

Match Report: Mens Provisional 2 Black

28th of May vs Westside Wolves

Result: 0-0

This week the Men’s Provisional two side from Southern River took on top of the table team Westside Wolves. Being scheduled for an early Friday evening, both teams struggled to make it to Perth Stadium in time. The Hawks were close playing down but thankfully they had a full contingent come whistle time, the Wolves weren’t so lucky with their keeper MIA.

With the game starting on time the Hawks broke out early trying to take advantage of the “kicking fullback”. However no matter how hard the forwards tried they weren’t able to penetrate the strong Wolves defence. The first half started and finished with minimal opportunities from both sides and therefore ending the same way it started, nil all.

The second half started similarly to the first half with the Hawks putting the pressure on the Wolves and their partly guarded goals early. However ten minutes into the second half the Hawks were made true equals when the Wolves keeper eventually took his place in the Wolves goals. With the added protection the Wolves turned up the heat putting a huge amount of pressure on the Hawks defence. The Wolves came close to scoring with a perfect shot being stopped on the line by even better defence from Carl Bowman. With the help from Dean Savage-Morton and Brad Kneebone the Hawks defence played their part to restrict the Wolves from having any further opportunities with the second half and the game finishing in a dead lock nil all.

Next Game vs UWA at Melville at 5:30pm on the 13th of June.

O50s  V Whitfords

Macdonald Park 29/05/2010

It was always going to be a tough game… Whitfords were undefeated at the top of the table- we arrived and saw their 14  players ready to be pitted against our 9 (bad week for our numbers)- it got even tougher.

Undaunted we committed ourselves to putting up a strong contest. Both

sides went hard and we ran hard (boy did we run hard) however it wasn’t long

before Whitfords made inroads and registered a score. Johnny Ellis was

everywhere contributing strongly and Dave (Frosty) Frost was trying

everything he could to put pressure on their midfield. Our team did all we could to keep repelling,  even getting a couple of short corners thanks to Phil Hewton with strong support from Jeff Anderson and Lloyd Jones but  their scores started to rack up.

Both sides continued to play the game in good spirits but when we went  into half time 0-5 we knew the day was by no means over. The second half went the way of the first and the waves of Whitfords forwards descended on our back line again and again. Geoff Wilson produced some great saves in goal and the defence in Steve Airey and Bryon (Macca) McLaughlin threw everything they had – but the final score ended up 0-10.

Hopefully with a general bye next week and some time to lick our wounds coupled with getting a few regulars back week we can mount a better challenge against the 2nd top side in the comp in the shape of Melville.

Team thanks to Barry Vanderputt for coming and umpiring for us – a true

 clubman…

Macca (intrepid reporter)

Well that was a bumper edition this week. With the general bye this weekend, it will give all players with those niggling injuries a chance to recuperate. The grounds also will get a well deserved rest as well. On that, please note that in an effort to preserve our number 1 ground, ALL PLAYERS are reminded that the D”s are sacrosanct and no warming up by anyone is permitted. This also includes training both senior and junior. Please warm up/train between the 25’s and assist us to look after our grounds during the season
