HAWK EYE
Southern River Hockey Club Vol.5 Ed 4

THANK YOU

A sincere thank you to the following people for assisting me with line marking in the last 2 weeks due to my unavailability:
Dave Vanderputt, Chris (Ports) Baker, Dave Frost, Geoff Foster, Brian Coppendale and Ashley Hoskins.
Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
Janson Hoskins( Ground Controller)

STOP PRESS STOP PRESS STOP PRESS

We have just been informed by HockeyWA that our U/15B side has been elevated into A Reserve Grade. This is fantastic news for the club because that means that they now compete all games on artificial surfaces. This will not only enhance the playing skills of the group but also the Hawks profile within HockeyWA . Well done to all concerned with this ground breaking achievement !!!!!
LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I would like to thank the members of the Southern River Hockey Club for the warm welcome back to Hockey after more than 15 years.
Having played all my junior years at Trinity before moving to Armadale and Gosnells clubs, it was a pleasant surprise to see so many familiar friendly faces around the club. I have had the opportunity to have a beer with John and Janson and hope to have a few more with whoever is up to it on a Thursday night after training and meet all the other members. Seeing Freddie still coaching is great and takes me back to when he was coaching the U17 first team and I was coaching the U17 2’s at Armadale, He is one person I know can develop and bring the best out of a player.
The socialness of all the people after training and the inclusion of the juniors and ladies in club house makes a big difference from the old days, Janson and I were reminiscing about the old days and training sessions ending in the club house in the wee small hours of Friday morning.
The club house and playing fields are of a quality I haven’t seen in many years since my school days and the perfect place for a strong sport and social club, with so many people doing so many jobs instead of the usual 4 or 5 committee members doing it all.
My son has decided after 3 years of soccer to turn to hockey and has fitted in with the other team members and has said they all talk to him which makes him more comfortable with the change.

It is great to be back.
Thanks to you all.
Martin and Connor Hickey.

Thanks Martin, Its observations like these that re in force the fact that we at Southern River are getting it right. We are glad that Connor has been accepted well by his team mates and look forward to a long and happy association with you both. – Ed.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT.

IF YOU HAVENT PAID YOUR FEES OR MADE AN ARRANGEMENT, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU SEE BARRY VANDERPUTT OR JEAN COPPENDALE IMMEDIATELY TO PUT SOME COMMITMENT INTO ACTION.
***************************************************************************
CLUBMAN NOMINATION:NOMINEE DAVE VANDERPUTT/NOMINATOR BARRY ROMARO
I just want to mention that over the last few weeks I have seen one of our foundation members make
a series of selfless commitments that I believe must not go unheralded. Most members
would not probly know that the Veterans 0/40′s side has had a hard time filling the goal keeper positions for the grass sides this year but that is because David Vanderputt has put his hand up each and every week to fill the keepers role in over three teams. David started the season looking forward to playing on the field this year in the vets forty competition and without any fuss he has done what is best for the club not what was best for himself. David has now put his hand up to keep full time for the metro three side to allow Noel to play Vets another selfless act. On top of all of the above
mentioned David as you know has taken on the role as coach for the ladies grass side and I see as usual David somehow finds time to help with other things around the club like ground markings. I know David would not like his contributions to the club to be made a fuss of because David does not do anything for recognition but for me David is the example of a “Club Man”
EDITORS NOTE: A worthy nomination Barry. Well done to Dave from all at Southern River Hockey Club !!

THE HAWKS IN BATTLE
UNDER 15B

A crisp Sunday morning saw Rockingham squaring up to the mighty Hawks on our home ground, and as they could only field 8 players it proved to be a daunting task. Not having our usual subs Chelsey heath stepped up and a new player in Jacob Wehr played his first game. (welcome to the Hawks Jacob)
The Hawks dominated all the game play having multiple goal scorers,
including the backline sneaking down the ground for a shot on goal.
Zak the goal keeper was disturbed but twice, (once to retrieve the
ball from behind the goals) and all in all a game the Hawks should of
and did win convincingly.
Now it seems the A reserves beckon.
For the second week in a row now the Hawks had players with hat
tricks. Congrats to Mitch and Jayden
It must be said, the game momentum was broken with many comical
moments as it seemed players vied for a Heathy sledge. The best being
a shot on goal from Mitch resulting in the ball coming back to earth
covered in ice.
Thanks to Chelsey for subbing (playing as if she belonged)
Score 12-0
Goals Mitch 5, Jayden 3,
singles to Aidan, Jess, Luke and Fabian
Votes Jayden, Chelsey, Aidan.

Juniors U11 Blue vs Dale
Score 1 – 0
Unsure of the challenge ahead and starting the game with 10 players (Ruby was away) Lauren lead the team onto the field. The starting positions were Emma in goals, Madison and Lochlan as fullbacks, Alex, Lauren and Kayla as halves, Lachlan as the left wing Riley and Kaylee as inners and James as centre forward. The Hawks dominated the game from the outset with great forward pressure. Then a surprise recruit in Jordan (welcome to the club) who quickly took the position of right wing and everything was set for a great battle. James had a couple of opportunities to score and Riley was holding his position really well. Both Lauren and Kayla were resilient trapping the ball and pushing it forward again. The first half was a little quiet for the full backs with only a couple of touches coming their way. The second half saw Lochlan M and James and Madison and Kaylee swap positions and Riley moved to half back and Lachlan C played inner, with that much of a change around you would think that it would have disrupted the players but they took it all in their stride and not only maintained forward pressure they managed to score a great team goal. This was an excellent game to watch with excellent contributions from all players. Well done on your first win. A Big thanks to Greg for umpiring and to the spectators for their support.

Ladies Provisional 4 vs Uni
Score 3 – 3

It is funny when you play the team on the bottom of the ladder you have certain expectations, usually if you are sitting second on the ladder playing the bottom side the expectation would be for a win however that was not the case. It was not that we didn’t play well, some of the team did (great goals from Bec) and it was not that Uni didn’t play well because some of their players did but something definitely went wrong although having said all that I am told from the spectators it was a GREAT game to watch however frustrating it may have been to play in it. It was not that we didn’t dominate the game and control nearly 90% of the play because we did but Uni managed to congest the D and limit our scoring opportunities. Our short corners were played well and we are now starting to convert those (we are now remembering the ones that work) but I think our defensive pressure just wasn’t at its usual best and NO its not because Gail wasn’t there probably more because Mia was missing but either way every time we finally managed to score within minutes Uni had pegged us back. I think we will just pen this one down as the one that got away and look forward to doing it a little better next time we meet and hopefully next week when we play Aquinas. A big thanks to the spectators and the rowdy lot from the grass team who came to spur us on (pester us).

Match Report: Mens Provisional 2 Black
15th of May vs Kalamunda
Result: 3-2
On a cold Saturday night at The Stadium this week the top Men’s side returned to the pitch after, what some would say, a well deserved week off. In reality it was more a time of reflection for after three games the boys were still looking for their first win.
With the night getting cool the Hawks lined up in the centre of the pitch ready to take on a relatively unknown Kalamunda team. In the line up the team had coach Lee Hansord debuting after a long term knee injury and Brad Kneebone back from his honeymoon and taking on the captaincy spot from injured Quinton Fraser. Also missing in the line-up were Connor Cracknell and the New Zealand brothers (Michael and Ben) with Brad Hunt, James Gradison, and Ross Smith moving up from the twos.
Even while losing the starting toss and having a heavily changed team the Hawks started the game like a well oiled machine. With early dominance in the midfield the Hawks found themselves frequently in attack. With quality passing it was only inevitable that the Hawks would hit the lead. This happened midway in the first half when a cross into the penalty circle was received by Tim Bowman who cleanly swept the ball the rest of the way into the back of the net. With enough time in the first half to continue the goal scoring the Hawks’ second goal came after Jonathon Lanzon pounced onto a loose floating ball, after the Kalamunda keeper was forced to save a shot from Tim Bowman, and with difficulty helped it back into the net.
Two goals was all the Hawks would manage in the first half with the second half starting like the game started; the Hawks being in control. After multiple opportunities to score the Hawks finally increased their lead to three after Lee Hansord smashed the ball into the penalty circle catching Ross Smith’s stick within the penalty circle on the way to the back of the net.
With three goals up the Hawks thought they had their first win in the belt; however Kalamunda had plans of their own managing to score two goals in the dieing minutes of the game. The first goal came after a gifted one-on-one with the Hawks goalie and the second from a rare penalty corner. Thankfully the clock got the better of Kalamunda with the Hawks in celebrations finishing the game with their first win for the season. It was a well rewarded win for the Hawks after a quality 70 minutes of play.
Next Game vs Hale at PHS at 3:00pm on the 22nd of May.

THE UNDEFEATED TEAMS FACE OFF
By Barry Romaro
Today we travelled to the UWA playing fields in Mount Claremont to take on the only other undefeated side in our competition. The Uni Associates side has also been winning their games comfortably so we were all looking forward to a tough game. We lined up against a side boasting Craig Boyce at center half, who is a former Australian Olympic player and we were all wondering just how good this side was going to be. The game started at a frenetic pace with us having most of the possession but we kept turning the ball over in the middle, by trying to go through players with our passes and they were cutting our passes off with ease. We scored first with a great piece of play passing the ball around to beat the keeper. The moment we scored we woke up the sleeping giant and Uni attacked relentlessly. Uni were back on level terms with us within only minute of our first goal. Much of the rest of first half saw each side take control only to lose it to their opposition time and time again. With about five minutes to go in the first half we converted our second goal through a deflected short corner and we went to the half time break two one up.
Our half time talk was centered on finding a way around their defense without going through their center half and shortening up our passes. These tactics were put in place very well in our second half as we dominated the score board but our defense worked tirelessly some of us even took small naps after long defensive runs trying to shut down their counter defensive attacks. Finally the whistle to signal the end of the game came and we headed to the bar for much needed refreshments. The final score was 8-1 win to us with Trenty scoring his sixth hat trick in five games! A very special mention goes to James Gradisen who offered to umpire us without being asked after he found out we did not anyone to do the job for us and another thank you to both Rob and Jamie for filling in at short notice.

A GOOD WIN
By Deb Clearwater

Saturday 15th May saw the “Lady Hawks” take on Dellas at Southern River although it was Dellas’s home game. The weather has finally moved into autumn trends with the day starting very cold but by the time 2pm came around it had warmed up to a perfect temperature for hockey. I would just like to say what good conditions the grounds were in and thank the line markers for getting it prepared for us.
Southern River Gold was lead onto the field this week by Tanase (all part of our plan to give each member of the team a turn at leading the girls on – sharing the responsibility so to speak). Dellas won the toss and chose the end.
Due to the fact that the team has a number of new players this year there were a few positional changes made to ensure we find the right position for the player. This week we had Megan and Candice sharing the role of Centre Forward, Sarah and Rachel as Inners and kept Kellie in the role of Centre Half. In goal this week we had the help of the wonderful Tash who filled in for us in Diana’s absence (thanks Tash). Lenni tried a new approach to our subbing which worked really well.
Southern River Gold took the hit off and was instantly on the attack. The girls worked well together passing out to the wings and back in again. The wings were in perfect position in on the posts giving our forwards and Kellie the chance to hit it up into the D on attacking moves. Dellas were very strong in defence and the girls had to work hard together to get past them. Dellas also had a very talented Centre half who needed to be shut down as when she got the ball she was off with skill and speed. However our Fullbacks (Annie & Tilly) did a great job along with Tash who saved countless attempts at goal. Dellas scored a goal from a short corner late in the first half only to have it disallowed as they had not taken the ball out of the D before shooting at goal. An excellent piece of umpiring on behalf of both umpires as they both had picked up on the fact that it had not come out of the D.
This week Southern Rivers attacking moves resulted in them making it into Dellas’s D a number of times in the first half and also resulted in a couple of short corners, something we have been unable to accomplish in the last few weeks so it was great to see the hard work the girls have been doing and the team working together to achieve this. As a result of one of our short corners (and some fancy footwork) Megan scored the first goal of the game. Southern River lead 1 -0 at half time.
The girls were buoyed by the fact they were leading at half time but knew they still had a lot of work ahead of them to win the game. Half time talk consisted on reinforcing the great work they were all doing in the first half along and reminding them of what we had practiced on Thursday night.
The second half played very similar to the first with both Southern River and Dellas attacking each other’s goals. With both the half’s and full backs clearing the ball out to the side under attack they kept Dellas from scoring and our forwards had some great runs up the centre to put pressure on Dellas’s backs. At yet another short corner the ball was hit out to Kellie who stopped it and took a shot at goal only to have Dellas deflect to back to Rachel who was in perfect position to send it back at goal for Megan to touch in and score her second goal of the game. Southern River 2 up. Dellas were not going to give up without a fight and took the attack back to Southern River scoring a well worked goal. Southern River 2 Dellas 1 with about 15 minutes still to play. Everyone was getting tired but Southern River was determined not to let this one slip away. After another attacking move Tanase who was in perfect position on the posts scored a brilliant defection goal. Southern River 3 Dellas 1. But there was still 10 minutes to play and Dellas rallied again to score a goal late in the half. Southern River 3 Dellas 2 with just minutes to go Dellas were on the attack again but after some great defence and clearing shots Southern River were able to hold on for a hard fought win. Final score Southern River 3 Dellas 2.
Watching from the sidelines was hard as I wanted to be out their but it was also pleasing to see the girls not only put into play moves and skills we had practiced at training but following Dave’s instructions and working together as a team. This team is a work in progress but it has the makings of a very fine team indeed and can only get better with each game they play.
Well done Lady Hawks!

Match report: Metro 3 Gold
15th May vs. Kalamunda
Result 3-0
The Metro 3’s were away to Kalamunda this week. We somehow ended up with extra numbers after a couple of surprise attendees turned up and we played with lots of interchange players. This proved to be a bit of a challenge in keeping everyone involved in the game and resulted in a few players in different positions than they’ve played earlier this year. We welcomed Dave Vanderputt in goals for the first time this year also – a very welcome addition to the team.
We started slowly – as has become a bit of a bad habit this year- and Kalamunda had all the play for the first ten minutes. Fortunately we managed to keep them out and started to counter attack. It took us a while to adjust to the playing surface and Kalamunda took advantage of home ground knowledge. After some better ball movement we pressed into to circle and Rusty put away a very good goal into the top corner of the net.
This seemed to inspire the team to greater effort and teamwork. We managed to produce the best goal of the year so far when a move that started in deep defence made it all of the way to our attacking circle without the opposition touching the ball. Troy was on hand to clinically put the ball away and we went into half time 2-0 up.
The half time talk centered on repeating the sort of play that produced the goal of the year. After half time we teamed well together but Kalamunda played some determined hockey and scoring was difficult. We managed a third goal through a short conversion courtesy of Troy and held on to keep Kalamunda from scoring.
It was a good effort all round by the team with some good ball movement and excellent back tackling and pressure on many occasions. Carl had his best game for the year at centre half and controlled the play nicely.
Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us. Looking forward to seeing everyone down to training on Thursday night. Next game vs Vic Park at home at 2pm.

Beaten With a Blunt Stick

Hawks v Fremantle
Brad George
Heading to Freo for a box on with the top of the top of the table Magpies was always going to be a challenge. We lost our second player of the season with Azza being confirmed as AIP….that’s ankle in plaster a week after we were dumped by young JayJay by text message. Ports was MIA ahhh that’s missing in alcohol thanks to wedding duties and Bono stood up after one hour of training on Thursday to play the game of his life.
Thanks to Mick Spear and Aiden Glen and our secret pale Azza replacement for jumping in at the last minute.
The game started off in the usual fashion at Freo with Freo’s Shrek and Birdy scaring the bejeezas out of everyone. On a perfect pitch it took us a while to get used to the ball not bouncing and everyone including me actually managing to stop it. We defended well for the first 15 minutes and then out of the blue the umpires of the century managed to not see the ball smack into the foot of the Freo player on their attacking 25, whilst 22 players did, 11 of whom stopped to take the free and hit and 2 who thought they might as well play and on and score a goal…lesson learnt..

Well that was the catalyst for Buddha Brad who has peacefully been floating around the field for the last four weeks to make way for Chopper to return and the game became the now traditional physical affair between the two teams. We travelled through the rest of the half with some powerful attacks onto the opposition half but despite Phil, Paul D and Army firing hard. Ravi played us into some sensational positions and was ripped off when a Freo player using his hand to stop a shot on goal was rewarded with a 16 yard hit.
Fresh legs arrived with Aiden Glen and Phil took control of the interchanges. We pushed hard early in the second half and somehow the act of Freo’s goalie on no less than two occasion’s accidently hiding the ball under his pads and another Freo defender using his hand to stop a goal all resulted in them being awarded 16’s. Finally after a succession of short corners the howitzer of big Neil “New Dad” Worland punished the backboard and leveled the scores.

Freo turned up the heavy stuff after our goal and pounded hard down the wings and through the centre. Kenny kept the defenders in order and kept his cool under fire. We survived two goals that were disallowed after our superior negotiations skills. Our foes weren’t happy and both teams poured it on for the umps so when I presented a holy grail to Shreks shins I received our first green card of the season. After the imposed break we finally succumbed to another short corner and my second big mistake of the game saw me break and get sent to the half way line. Fair call, but then Ravi copped the same fate without breaking, the boys were left to defend a short with only 3 in goal. Sorry guys for letting you down and the resulting goal was not a fair reflection of the game played.

So in the end, we went down 2 – 1 and I’m up for a six pack but it was an intense game and the boys played a great game. Best on ground was drawn by Bono in goals and Ravi from right half. Well done guys.

Editors Note- Some content has been withdrawn to protect negativity towards umpires and opposition players.

Vets over 50′s V Vic Park

After a confidence boosting draw in last weeks game against Hale, the O/50 Div 3 side headed to Fletcher Park to take on Vic Park.
The game started with plenty of energy with the Hawks bringing pressure to bear up forward resulting in a number of short corners. Bobby Figredo and Phil Hewton caused plenty of problems for the Panthers defence, assisted by Dave Frost’s strongly contested ball gets on the right wing. The Hawks were rewarded for their efforts when Bobby scored, putting us up 1-0.
In the second half we endeavored to maintain our momentum however Vic Park stepped up a notch providing contest after contest. Johnny Ellis was making his presence felt around the ground with Jeff Anderson providing strong support at left half.
Despite goalkeeper Geoff Wilson’s coverage and some solid repelling, Vic Park scored through the efforts of a dynamic forward line which provided stiff competition for our fledgling fullback team of Steve Airey and Bryon (Macca) McLaughlin. Despite our continued pressure we went down 1-4 to Vic Park, an outcome which didn’t truly reflect the level of competition and our ongoing improvement as a team since the commencement of the season.

Special thanks to young Dean Savage-Morton for umpiring the game despite required to play later on in the day.

********************************************************************** As you can see there has been a great response to the request for match reports. It is fantastic to read how our fellow Hawkers are fairing each week. The letter from Martin and Connor Hickey is a great testament to our club and I welcome articles from any member and will be published providing the content is positive.

THURSDAY NIGHTS

Great to see an increase in the amount of players staying for team selections. We have introduced an innovative “ match review” prior to team announcements and this makes for interesting listening. We are keeping it brief and light hearted and provides further insight into our fellow teams and how they are travelling. Thank you to all Captains/ Coaches for you co ooperation

This weeks edition recognizes the unheralded volunteers that this club is so blessed to have. All of our committee, coaches, junior co-ordinators, kitchen helpers, bar staff, umpires( both senior and junior), captains, report writers, ground markers, goal repairers….. the list goes on. The Southern River Hockey Club is like so many other amateur sporting clubs that rely so heavily on the behind the scenes people. We are so fortunate to have an abundance of people willing to put their hands up to assist this great club become greater. As a club that is still in its infancy, we have achieved so much both on and off the field. It is well documented that we have enjoyed unprecedented success on the ground with a series of important successes in our very short history. One only has to check out the northern wall of our club house to see the amount of awards we have won. The framed pictures represent the first senior mens Premiership, the first womens Premiership and last year we completed the trilogy with the first junior Premiership.

All this is not possible without you, the players, but also is testimony to the enormous work done by our volunteers. All of the tasks required to run a club has to be done by someone and we are fortunate to have those someones to fill the shoes. The people who do these tasks don’t look for exposure so I wont embarrass them with names. Just look around the club and you will find tasks completed with a minimum of fuss and there will be no fanfare from these people. The Hawks say thank you to these people and we are grateful for your input.

THE GAMES

Southern River vs Harlies

Veterans 40’s

8/5/2010

By Barry Romaro

OUR BIGGEST TEST YET

This weekend’s game pitted us against a well-drilled side that Heathy knew well because he plays with quite a few of them in the midweek vet’s competition. It started off as a dour affair with neither side getting any ascendancy until well beyond the fifteen-minute mark of the first quarter. We started to struggle with our game plan as the opposition forced us to make errors and we started to use the long ball far too often. Arthur was having his best game for us since coming out of retirement but we were making it too hard for for him to get the ball into the forward line with any impact, by leaving a gap to large between Arthur and our strike forwards. Due to us not covering our man our opposition they were able to use a loose man in defense, to continually mop up nearly every ball that Arthur delivered. Things changed a little for us when John Gradisen dispossessed a Harlies player just inside their half and sprinted to the top of their circle and deftly slotted away our first goal. We went into the half time break one to nil up. We had a good chat about the changes that could be made to our short corners and forward structure and put our talk to good use in the second half. Goals started to rain for us not long into the second half with John Gradisen adding another goal and John Trent setting what I believe is a club record by scoring a hat trick for the fourth consecutive game! Thank you to all the supporters for cheering us on. And a special mention also for Janson Hoskins for setting up the great ambience of the alfresco and music that was enjoyed by all including the opposition who said they loved playing with music in the background. The game finished with us winning five goals to one. Thankyou to Dave Vanderputt and Barry Vanderputt for umpiring a half of hockey each both at short notice. And also  thankyou to Chris Baker and Brad George for also filling in for us and both had great games.

Best players: John Gradisen, Craig Ryan, John Trent

UNDER 15B

A warm Sunday morning saw the Hawks play Aquinas on their home turf. The game started with the hawks fielding only 8 players as parents were arriving late (including yours truly) yet this didn’t hamper our efforts as Jayden hit the back of the net in the first few minutes of the game.

With close to a full squad now on the turf, the hawks dominated the play with strong defensive efforts from Jess Jayden and Luke setting up many forward forays.

A quick goal to Aidan and a nice deflection goal to Keelie saw the lead extended. Mitch then joined in with a powerhouse shot that could have taken the goalies head off.

Aquinas were battling on with many attacks but were shut down with tireless efforts from our midfield who pressured the opposition into many turnovers.

Our next score came from a scrimmage in our attacking goalmouth as Aidan scored a seagull gimmee from a Tobias Dixey loose ball. Aquinas scored but only after a valiant effort from Zak, repelling the ball twice before it dribbled over the line. It must be said much to his disgust.

The Hawks dominated the game all day and then late into the second half Aidan decided to help himself to a goal fest scoring three goals to finish with five for the day.

All up a great game for the Hawks with Rockingham meeting us at home next match.

Juniors U11 Blue vs CT Pirates

Score 0 – 0

For a group of juniors that had never played together before and for the majority had never played hockey at all, what an outstanding team performance they displayed early Saturday morning against CT Pirates. With Riley as captain leading the team onto the field and a very good turn-out of spectators spirits were high.  Starting positions were Emma in goals, Alex and James as fullbacks, Lochlan, Lauren and Lachlan as halves, Ruby and Riley as wings Kayla and Kaylee as inners and Madison as centre forward. Both teams had scoring opportunities and our defence stood firm clearing the ball wide and on a couple of occasions straight into forward attack. The team played out a couple of short corners in attack and with a little more practise I am sure they will convert a few  in future games. An all round excellent performance and all players should be proud of their efforts. A big thanks to Greg for umpiring and to all the parents and spectators.

Ladies Provisional 4 vs Dale

Score 4 – 1

With a top of the table clash on a newly laid turf on field one at Curtin against league leaders Dale we all knew we would be under pressure from the first whistle but the team came out of the blocks fast and dominated from the outset. The run and ball skills that our team displayed were excellent, we used both sides of the field to perfection with excellent trapping and quick passes to running players it was only a matter of time before we were on the score board. Our first goal was from a short corner with the ball being trapped at the top of the D laid wide and a shot across goals saw the ball being swept into the left corner of the goals. We were not without our scares as Dale took the ball into our defence and had the opportunity to score a couple of times but our defence was just too good. The new turf caused a few problems with the slipperiness seeing players from both teams losing their footings some in spectacular fashion and some at the worst possible moment. The next goal came from a run in play and some great fighting spirit from the forwards saw Jacinta slap a bouncing ball into goals. Then it happened late in the first half Dale scored but we didn’t let that phase us at all with Rebecca dominating the left side of the field, and everyone at their usual best we knew we would get more goals. Then Emma capitalised on some great passing to score our third. Dale were unrelenting and if they had concentrated as much on the ball as they did on our bodies we would have been in trouble. We had quite a few short corners but Dale were always out of the blocks very very fast which put us under a little more pressure than we are used to, something I am sure we will work on although having said that we did manage to finish off the game with not only a very skilfully placed (no not blowing my own trumpet) but controversial goal with a short corner being take from the unorthodox side to Chris who trapped, dribbled and smashed the ball toward the right hand corner of the goals only to have myself get stick on ball and deflect it up over the keepers head into the top net, after a little debate from the two umpires and the very unhappy Dale team we were awarded with our fourth goal. Our team played with professionalism and the umpires commended our players saying we were a delight to umpire. A big thanks to our spectators that cheered us on, yes we could hear you!! And to Fred as always for sharing his knowledge of the game with us.

HAWKEYE VOL 5 ED 2

May 4th, 2010 by Janson Hoskins

HAWK EYE

THANK YOU

This edition starts with a positive!! It seems the call for all players to attend Thursday training has been heeded. The numbers have been fantastic and the fact that the majority of players come into the rooms for a short time is certainly a huge positive. Thursday nights is important for all members to hear the announcements of both teams and club news. The format will now include a short rap of the previous week’s game before the team is announced. This duty will be performed by coaches and captains and this gives all members the opportunity to get to know the players and captains from teams other than your own. This can only serve to strengthen the unity of the Hawk family. We are also almost ready to re introduce the buy one drink, get the chance to get a free bee. Just looking for a wheel and Plucka to complete the props and we are away!!!! Don’t forget the KITCHEN is now operational on Thursday and Saturdays. This is very popular to have dinner on Thursdays after training and there are some scrumptious meals on offer each week and they are cheap !!!!!!!!!!!

See you on Thursday………

THE GAMES

LADY HAWKS PUT UP A GOOD FIGHT

By Deb Clearwater

Saturday the 24th of April was shaping up to be yet another warm day for hockey (whatever happened to hockey being a winter sport?).

The ladies met at the club before heading North of the River to Mod’s home ground.

With 16 players the trick today would be to manage the subs to ensure everyone got a run. The injured Deb was given this task in Coach Dave’s absence.

Lenni gave Annie the responsibility of leading the girls onto the field this week and we won the toss choosing to take the hit off.

Robyn hit the ball back to Jo, who was taking on the role of Centre Half for the game.  The girls then mounted Southern Rivers attack on Mod’s. The first 20 minutes was like watching a game of tennis with Southern River moving forward towards Mod’s goal only to have Mod’s counter attack.  The game seemed to be being played down the right side and between both 25’s.

Late in the first half Mod’s attacked Southern Rivers goal.  Diana, playing her first official role as Southern River’s new goalie, made a number of saves backed up by Tilly and Kellie and the team managed to defend a couple of short corners.  Unfortunately during one attacking move Diana who had just proved her commitment to the team by throwing herself across goal in a desperate dive to save a goal (which she successfully saved) was unable to get back to her feet in time to stop Mod’s from scoring.  It must be pointed out though that she defended at least 2 – 3 rebounds from her knees before the ball was pushed just wide of her into the goal.  A gallant effort Diana!

Mod’s led 1 – 0 at the end of the first half.

Half time talk involved getting the girls to focus on short sharp passes and trying to switch sides as Mod’s seemed to be reading our play.

The Lady Hawks took to the field determined to level the scores.  The second half played along the same lines as the first with the ball going from one end of the field and back again.  Late in the second half Southern River managed some breakaway moves with Rachel and Tenase working well together which nearly saw them score.  Unfortunately the girls were unable to get that equalising goal and Mod’s won the game 1 – 0.

Considering this was only our second game of the season and we are a new team, a 1 – 0 score against a team who played together last year was a good result.  And there is always room for improvement which only bodes well for the rest of the season.

The subbing of players to ensure fresh legs on the field proved to be a difficult task which involved players being put into positions they had never played before.  I would like to say how well everyone played and how proud I was of the new girls who took on whatever position they were asked whether they had played it before or not.  The subbing is something we can work on as the weeks go on to ensure continuity for players and positions.

Once again Lady Hawks hold your heads high, you’re doing a great job!  Look out our competitors as we are getting ready to take flight.

Southern River vs Victoria Park

Veterans 40’s

24/4/2010

By Barry Romaro

Todays game was played under quite hot conditions and those conditions were made harder by us only being able to field eleven players. We will be hunting high and low for one or two over forty players over the next few weeks because we all ran out of steam with about fifteen minutes left in the game.  We started the game brimming with confidence and it only took about two minutes before we had the back board ringing. We linked up better this week making the opposition chase us consistently. The second goal of the day was spectacular we had moved the ball from the centre of the field out to Andy at right inner and he carried it from the twenty five yard line into the circle. As Andy entered the circle the defenders backed off so Andy smashed the ball in to the upper left hand side of the goals at lightning speed. The majority of the game saw our midfield and forward line linking up very well with very good passing that allowed John Trent to accumulate a staggering goal haul. We finished the game with nearly every one of our forwards scoring a goal, and your time will come Arthur as you very nearly scored a couple today. I would like to thank Dean Savage-Morton for taking on the role of the umpire for us he is a true clubman and it is also great to have a good confident umpire when you have twenty hot cranky old men with no idea running around the field.

Best players: Craig Ryan, John Trent, Colin Stewart

Goals: John Trent 7,  John Heath 1, John Gradisen 1,

Match report:  Metro 3 Gold

24th April vs Melville

Result 5-1

The Metro 3’s had a short drive to Melville on another great day for hockey. We had a few changes from last week with a couple of key players unavailable but some new faces were welcome additions to the team.  Special thanks to Ian Eggington (filling in from the 2’s) and Andy taking up the challenge of goal keeping after a little arm twisting from his Dad! The Melville pitch was a bit uneven and we knew it wasn’t the day for fancy stickwork just simple hockey.

We started well with Rusty playing some great determined hockey at right inner, running hard and pressurizing the Melville defence. Before too long the rest of the team responded in kind and we were rewarded with an early goal through Troy.

After some even play Melville got a goal back after yours truly tried to stop a shot at goal and managed to deflect it up and over Andy in goals giving him no chance to stop it. Fortunately we didn’t drop our heads , worked hard and earned a short corner soon after which Troy neatly put away.

At the break we were 2-1 up and looking forward to continuing our good work in the second half. We knew we had to run hard as Melville had three reserves versus our one.

In the second half we played some great hockey in patches and kept Melville out in the balance. The sharing of the ball, calling and short passing was excellent and we wore down Melville through really effective, simple hockey. The youngsters in Cameron and Brian provided good run and started to team well together. Chad, Kyle Owen and Ian in the half line were providing the forwards with plenty of supply and the experienced trio down the right of Nathan, Rusty and Troy were providing plenty of headaches for the Melville defence. Gibbo was very solid in the unfamiliar role at fullback making life easy for me on the other flank  and Andy in goals.

Our good play was rewarded with 2 more goals to Troy who was deadly in front of goals today and a well deserved 1 to Rusty which was great reward from all of the effort being put in across the ground. Troy owes the Melville fullback a beer or 6 (maybe he should just shout the bar on Thursday night after training!) after a short corner attempt that was missing by at least 2 metres was deflected into the goals by their player.  (training note for all our juniors out there – always know where your post is when defending short corners!)

All up a really good team effort. Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us. Looking forward to seeing everyone down at our home turf next week.

Next game vs Willeton Reds at home at 2pm.

LADY HAWKS HAVE THEIR WINGS CLIPPED

By Deb Clearwater

Looking out the window on Saturday 1st May you would have been convinced that we would have “proper” weather for hockey with light drizzle and a very overcast sky. However by the time 2pm came around the sun was shining and the sun screen was out once again.

The girl’s day started badly when they arrived at the club at 1.30pm to find it locked up and unfortunately the goalie gear was locked in there too.  When the club was finally opened Candice had a difficult task of trying to get a set of gear that would fit her.

We knew from the start that this week was going to be hard.  Not only were we taking on an experienced Fremantle team but we were doing it without our senior players as Deb, Lou, Lenni and Jo were not playing this weekend along with our new star goalie Diana.

The game started 10 minutes late and still Southern River took the field 2 players short as Tilly was helping Candice get into her goalie gear, in the interim Teri donned the helmet and took up the position of kicking full back.  With the absence of our senior players the team was shuffled around, to get some fire power up front we moved Kellie out of her comfort zone into the centre half position while moving Annie back into fullback to keep our defence strong.  During the game Annie and Kellie switched between fullback and centre half when one needed a break.

The first half saw Robyn come off with a pulled calf muscle so Sarah took over the Centre Forward position (only her 2nd game for the team).  We had to send for ice as both Teri and Nicole were hit on the knees (within minutes of each other) by high balls.  Fremantle played a very aggressive attacking game of hockey unfortunately for Candice she was one of their main targets.  She had to endure being pushed and shoved along with balls flying at her head.

Going into half time Southern River were down by about 5 goals.

The half time talk concentrated on keeping their spirits up, not to let Fremantle’s tactics get to them and to try and get the ball wide.

The second half played pretty much the same as the first although it got a little fierier as Southern River started to take exception to Fremantle’s rough play and Fremantle got upset when we managed to shut one of their main players down.  The umpires had to have words with both teams regarding their language.

Fremantle won the game 9 – 0 however Southern River played a really good game of hockey and the score line is not a true indication of the way they played.  Kris was excellent during defensive short corners running out hard and stopping a number of the Fremantle girls from taking a hit.  All the players defended well although the score line doesn’t show that.  The girls were simply out played on the day by a very experienced aggressive team.

I know the Lady Hawks are disappointed in the result but in every bad result there is a silver lining.  This game introduced the new girls to how some of the other teams play and how to stand up for themselves.  We also pinpointed a couple of items we can work on at practice which will help improve their game.  Remember girls every game is a learning opportunity – be proud – hold your heads high and be ready for Willetton next week.

Match Report: Mens Provisional 2 Black

1st of May vs Rockingham

Result: 1-2

Reporter Jon Lanzon

The top Hawks men’s side have walked away with two draws for their first two games. With this game being the last before a bye the Hawks needed a win to make an impact on the league ladder. Unfortunately the Saturday evening timeslot appeared to unsettle some of the team, before the game even started, with the team late getting onto the field causing the Hawks to miss their pre-game warm up.

After some encouraging words from Coach Lee Hansord the team started the match with encouraging signs. The midfield worked hard feeding quality balls to the forwards. Jonathon Lanzon had an early chance to open the score line winning a 50:50 with the Rockingham keeper, unfortunately he was de-possessed before he had a chance to get a shot off into the unguarded goal. With persistence the hawks continued their attack with Tim Bowman the next forward unlucky not to score with a shot going just wide of the post. Third time lucky, however, with Connor Cracknell finally breaking the drought putting the ball into the net from the right post.

One nil up the Hawks continued to dominate the first half, however no matter how much they tried they couldn’t get that second goal. While the half neared the end Rockingham were gifted an opportunity in attack and where the Hawks struggled Rockingham succeeded with their only shot on goal being a reverse stick shot to be envy about, right in the top right corner of the net. There was nothing fill-in keeper Guy Hoskin could do. With that, the first half ended one all.

A little rattled not having the lead they deserved the Hawks started the second half meaning business. The team continued to dominate from the fullbacks to the midfields. However the forwards, no matter how much they tried couldn’t finish it off. With the game looking like a draw Rockingham had plans of their own given a rare one on one with the Hawks keeper and putting the ball away, stealing the lead, with a few minutes remaining on the board.

Down by one the Hawks were desperate to even the score line. An opportunity came with seconds remaining after Captain Quinton Fraser ran the ball into the circle firing off a fierce shot forcing the Rockingham keeper to pull off a match winning save. The game ended with the Hawks dumbfounded, losing a game they played so well in. The team would like to thank Guy Hoskin for filling in for Brad Kneebone in goals.

1st May vs. Willeton Reds

Result 3-0

Reporter Clive Reader

The Metro 3’s were at home to Willeton this week. We had little idea what to expect from them as it was the first time we had played them after their merger in the off season. We had a few changes from last week with both Rusty and Nathan unavailable but we had Carl, Clint and Curtis very welcome returns to the fold. Andy filled in at goalie again this week and we had a sub which was greatly appreciated by all. Thanks to Noel for bringing the goalie gear down for Andy to use.

Willeton started with 10 players and mentally I think we thought it was going to be an easy game. Ball movement was slower this week, long passes were used rather than sharing the ball and generally we were off our game from the first two weeks. In short we were a t bit flat. We had a couple of chances to score and a couple of chances for Willeton were missed also. At half time it was nil all with the only short corner awarded going to Willeton.

After some home truths were reviewed at the break we came out with a lot more purpose in the second half.  After a period of sustained pressure Curtis got a nice deflection from near the post to slot the first goal of the game. Willeton responded with some quick breakaways but the defense stood firm and saved a couple of short corners with solid play. Troy continued his fine goal scoring start to the year with a short corner conversion. We continued to work hard and combinations between defense and the forward line improved as the second half went on.

It was really pleasing to see Cameron rewarded for an excellent game when he slotted in his first goal in senior hockey a few minutes from the end. He had positioned himself well all game with a few near misses earlier in the first half. A very John Gradisen esc performance at left wing.

All up another solid win for the 3’s. After a slow start we worked hard through the second half and got the rewards deserved for the effort.  Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us. Looking forward to seeing everyone down to training on Thursday night. Next week is an umpiring bye.

Southern River vs Newman nights

Veterans 40’s

1/5/2010

By Barry Romaro

TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH

We travelled over to Churchlands today to take on the second placed side in our division and we found out why they are in second spot. The game was not the most skilful game we have played, but quite a bit of that could be attributed to the endeavor of the Newman side. For the first time this season our opposition scored against us first and it was good to see it did not bother us at all, we just knuckled down and stopped mucking about and went and scored a goal of our own. With a few too many missed chances we kept Newman in the game until just before the half time whistle when we slipped away with our third goal giving us a two goal breather. We had a good chat about our style of play during the half time break and decided we needed to shorten our passes up and that’s what we did. Our second half saw us dominate over the whole field with Newman only having brief moments of control of the game. We could have easily scored ten goals in the second half but the hockey gods thought two more goals added to our score would be enough. The game finished with us winning five goals to two. Thankyou to John Heath and Barry Romaro for umpiring a half of hockey each since no club umpires could be found for our game.
