HAWKEYE VOL 5 ED 1

April 21st, 2010 by Janson Hoskins

 SEASON 2010 HAS ARRIVED

The 2010 hockey season arrived with a bang last Saturday. The Hawks started the year with a mixed bag and im sure you will read the stories about how our teams fared or you will hear from fellow Hawkers about how their games unfolded. To the initiated this is the official club newsletter and you will read all about our club in the following pages.

Firstly, a very warm welcome to the multitude of new players to our club. As you settle in you will find this club values its reputation both on and off the field in the highest regard and we are proud to have you on board. It is with the utmost pleasure that we also welcome back players from previous years. It is a gauge of any club’s success and respect when players return year after year. As we also welcome a new leader in John Heath and his hard working committee, 2010 looms as another great year for the Southern River Hockey Club. Good luck to all teams and remember the club is proud to have you as our ambassadors win lose or draw !!!!

LET THE GAMES BEGIN

THE BAR AND KITCHEN

The bar this year is once again manned by the evergreen Brain Coppendale and his trusty side kicks. The bar is integral to our operation as it serves as both a social gathering focal point as well as assisting us to offset some of the massive expenses incurred in running a sporting club. We attempt to keep all costs to an absolute minimum as well as ensuring that all members’ needs are catered for. This season also see us securing a new supplier and Club Sponsor in the form of CY Oconnor Bar and Grill. They have been more than accommodating in assisting us to secure a major liquor supplier and decided to also kick in a very generous sponsorship package for season 2010.The Club acknowledges the management of CY Oconnors and ask that all members utilize the facilities and very well stocked bottle shop. The restaurant has a wide variety of moderately priced meals as well as the traditional Garden Alfresco for a relaxing afternoon and the extensive snack menu caters for all tastes. CY Oconnors are situated close by at the intersection of Warton and Nicholson Rds Piara Waters ( Forrestdale). Make sure you mention the Hawks and you will be looked after…..

The Kitchen will once again be serving up the sumptious meals that has become famous both for Thursday nights and Saturday afternoon/evenings. Nina Keane will once again be head honcho but a slight change of format this year sees Thursday night meals supplied on a rotating system. Not only will this provide a wide variety of meals but will also relieve the pressure on the team as the team of “chefs” and “cheffettes” will take their turn to satisfy the rumblings…..

THURSDAY NIGHT TRAINING

Just a quick word on the need to have ALL players attend Thursday night training and more importantly the compulsory attendance in the rooms for team announcements and any important information. The club has prided itself as a family friendly club and we ask that all players pop into the rooms for 15 minutes following Thursday night training. You don’t have to guzzle litres of beer or stay all night, just come in and enjoy and add to the atmosphere that is Hawks At Play….

The club has identified the need to provide turf training for both the top Mens and Ladies teams but we ask that even if you attend training at these venues you also have an obligation to attend the club on Thursday nights…

You wont be sorry !

THE COMBATANTS

Match report:  Metro 3 Gold

17th April vs Fremantle

 Result 2-2

The Metro 3’s got a home game up front on a warm sunny day against arch rivals from prior seasons, Fremantle.

Our start before the whistle was pretty disorganized with a number of no shows and a late starter.  With the help of some Vets (Neil, Dixey and John Gradisen) filling in and two juniors in Brian and Curtis we managed to get together twelve players which proved crucial in the end against a team playing with fifteen. Chris Baker also stepped up for us in goals. Thanks to all the guys who helped out.

With only a few players having played together before we took a while to know our team-mates names, let alone how they play the game. Despite this the effort and intensity was pretty high early on and that intensity made up for some rustiness in trapping and skills. Our short passing game was working quite well and we controlled large parts of the first half. A goal to Freo was conceded from a fast break from the side line pretty much against the flow of play.

We had some good opportunities to score but could not quite penetrate and went into the break 1-0 down. Some minor positional changes were made and we looked forward to the second half with confidence.

The first ten minutes of the second half we played some very good hockey with short passing working well and bringing team-mates into the game. Our effort was rewarded with a fine opportunist goal from the evergreen John Gradisen off a short corner. John scored a second soon after finishing off some good forward moves in another classic display of how to play left wing. The half line of Andy (in his first senior game), Carl and Owen were teaming well and the coordination with the forwards was improving. Clint was very solid at fullback, Chris made a couple of good saves and Troy and Rusty were looking dangerous up forward. Brian was acquitting himself very well also in his first senior game at 15 and Curtis (a seniors vet. at 16) was also causing plenty of headaches for the Freo defence.  Towards the end of the second half we conceded a few short corners, possibly due to a lack of fitness, the hot weather or the number of interchanges the opposition enjoyed and we unfortunately conceded an equalizer from another short corner not long from the end. We pushed hard in the final few minutes but could not grab a winning goal.

All up a pretty good start to the year against a tough opposition. Thanks to all the supporters who turned up and cheered for us and enjoyed the great facilities we have at Southern River. Special thanks to Barry Romaro for helping me get my act together as a first time captain at Southern River.

Next game vs Melville at Melville at 2pm.

Best players

1.     Owen De Snoo

2.     Clint Laurench and Troy Cornish

3.     Carl Vanderputt.

LADY HAWKS SOAR HIGH

By Deb Clearwater

Well everyone the season is upon us once again.  Players old and new have dusted off their sticks and shin pads and gathered at the club to begin what promises to be a successful season in 2010.

With the temperature forecast to reach 28 oC it was shaping up to be a hot day for

hockey.

Southern River Gold was taking on the unknown opponent in Victoria Park.  Victoria Park is a new team to Metro 2 this year.

Southern River Gold had a new look this year with a number of new players joining the old along with a new coach (Dave) to get them off to a good start.

Lenni lead the girls onto the field in her first game as team captain and won the toss opting to take the end.  Victoria Park took the hit off and promptly took off towards Southern Rivers goal.  Southern River moved quickly back into defence but unfortunately in this move Deb had to leave the field with a badly torn calf muscle.  From that first passage of play from Victoria Park Southern River mounted a counter attack that would set the tone for the rest of the game.

Following Dave’s instructions the team played a brilliant game of fast flowing attacking hockey resulting in Tenase scoring the first of many goals.

Watching from the sidelines you wouldn’t have guessed that this was the first time the team had played together and for some their first game in many years.  Southern River defended well and had plenty of attacking opportunities many of which were converted into points.

Southern River had the run of the match where they dominated for most of the game.  It was great to see the ball being passed around all players and the quick short passes that saw the ball quickly to the forwards who hungered for goals.  Victoria Park scored their goal within the last 10 minutes from a well executed short corner which gave them the left that every new team needs.

Southern River won the match 8 – 1 with Tenase scoring 3 goals, Bec 2, Robyn 2 and Rachel 1.

I would just like to thank those who came to watch the match. Having supporters cheering on the sidelines definitely helps boost a team.  I would also like to congratulate the girls new and old on a fantastic game and I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season.  Although this was, in the end, an easy win, I would like you girls to remember what Dave said “You have to be in a position to be able to score the goals, if you’re not up there attacking then you don’t get the goals” or words to that effect. Great effort ladies!

Come on Lady Hawks – let’s make this season a good one.

 Southern River vs Riverside Lions

Veterans 40’s

27/3/2010

By Barry Romaro

We had not much idea of what to expect today, as this was our first outing in the over forty competition. We new we were going to be short of players due to injuries so went looking for players around the club and ended up dusting off Barry Vanderputt. We got of to a shaky start as this was the first time we had played together other than in a few scratch matches. After about ten minutes we had the backboard ringing and we started to think this was going to be easy. Riverside answered our goal within minutes and then we knew we had to get better. The game was played from end to end for the next five minutes before we started slotting in goals from everywhere. We now had complete control over the game and many near miss goal opportunities. We went into the half time break with six goals to one and enjoyed a break from the sun. The second half saw us dominate again especially as Riverside started to get tired. Our only real fault for the day was we started to bypass our midfield on too many occasions in the second half. Todays result was a good start to the season. The final score was ten – one. A big thankyou to Troy Cornish for umpiring our game and also the great support from the spectators.

Best players: Andy Smythe, John Trent, Colin Stewart

Goals: Andy Smythe 4, John Trent 3, John Heath 2, John Gradisen 1

 Till Next Week….Go Hawkers !!!
