HAWKS ON DISPLAY
The Southern River Hockey Club will be holding their annual Open Day for season 2010 on Sunday 11/4/10. The day will commence at 11-00am with the first series of intraclub scratch matches between the ladies Top team and a composite team from the second and third teams. A junior scratch match will run concurrently and will feature some of the club’s most promising young talent. These matches will be followed by a challenge match between the mens grass sides. These teams will be made up from players wishing to play of grass this year and will include a number of o/40 veteran players. Another concurrent junior exhibition game and a further match including more grass players will be played during the same time slot.
The highlight of the day will be the highly anticipated exhibition match between the top two men’s turf teams. This match will showcase the best the Hawks have to offer this year and with the large number of quality new recruits, the match promises a highly competitive game. Senior coach Lee Hansord is particularly excited about a successful season in 2010 and will use Sundays match to gauge the depth of the club as well as using the match to assist his selection committee on the final composition of the teams for the opening of the season on April 17th. Ladies Coach Fred Keane is also looking forward to an exciting year and is impressed with high quality of players at his disposal.
The club overall has been extremely encouraged by the successful pre season campaign that has seen an unprecedented number of new players coming to the club. Of particular interest is the number of new members who have returned to the sport this year as well as the new members who have relocated into the area and have continued their careers with the Hawks. These players have brought experience and a high skill level to the club to compliment the very capable playing roster of existing players. One of the reasons behind this resurgence of field hockey could be attributed to the high profile the sport has enjoyed with the recent success of the Kookaburras at the 2010 World Cup.
The club will be fortunate enough to have a member of the Kookaburras squad in Chris Cireillo as its special guest at the Open day as well as many local dignitaries and sponsors representatives.
A sausage sizzle will be run during the day and the bar and social hall will be open throughout the day. The day concludes at approximately 4-00pm and gives the local community the opportunity to view the excellent facilities that the Hawks have on offer. Vacancies still exist in all teams but places are filling rapidly with the season opener approaching.

Hawks Light Up

The Southern River Hockey club’s training facilities have been greatly enhanced by the construction of two new lighting towers each delivering 8000w of illumination. The “Twin Towers” are the culmination of 3 years of negotiation with the City Of Gosnells and several government departments. The club also provided substantial funding. The incredible success and growth of the Hawks in its 4 year existence has meant that the club has needed to address several key issues including providing all members with state of the art facilities to complement the existing excellent clubrooms and playing fields at Les Sands Reserve. The club now has sufficient lighting resources to ensure that the top Mens and Ladies turf teams have access to the best training facility that the club can offer as well as continuing the extensive junior development program. The lighting upgrade will also allow the club to play a series of night matches.
The Southern River Hockey Club wishes to also announce the appointment of Lee Hansord as its Senior Mens Coach for season 2010. Hansord takes on the role this year after being Club Captain for the previous two years and the club is looking forward to his innovative enthusiastic approach. Barry Romaro will be in control of the mens grass sides this year and is a role he has performed with distinction in the past.
