HAWKS SET TO SOAR IN 2010

The Southern River Hockey Club looks set for another successful 2010 hockey season following an outstanding response to the recent Registration Day. The club is also buoyed by the large number of people attending pre season training at this early stage of the year. Initial indications are that the club will be further increasing its representation in all teams including senior men and women. The club is particularly impressed with high number of junior signings from both new members and returning players. With plans this year to field an artificial turf team in the Womens division, as well as a very competitive over 40 veterans grade, the club looks well on track to enjoying another productive season. This follows on the outstanding success of the fledgling club which is currently just beginning its 5th year of competition. In that time the club has won several Premierships and Challenge Cup awards. This includes the history breaking first junior Premiership for the club as well as two consecutive Byrne & Judge awards for the most successful club per capita head in HockeyWA.

Senior pre season training has begun and has slowly started to ramp up in intensity. It is currently being conducted on Thursday evenings commencing at 6.15pm and Sunday mornings at 9.00am at the clubs headquarters at the Les Sands reserve in Gay Street Gosnells. Turf training for senior players will commence shortly as well as a series of scratch matches against rival clubs. Junior training dates and times will announced in the very near future.

The club has vacancies in all teams, including junior age groups and its popular” Hook In To Hockey” program.  Further information on any aspect of the club can be obtained by contacting Janson Hoskins 0437157556

Hawks On The Run

February 7th, 2010 by Janson Hoskins

HAWKS ON THE RUN

The Southern River Hockey Club has commenced pre season training in readiness for the 2010 Hockey season. Training for the Senior men and women is currently being conducted on Sundays 9-00am and Thursdays 6.15pm at the club’s home base in Gay St Gosnells at the Les Sands Pavilion. Early indicators including the encouraging numbers attending the early sessions suggest another successful year ahead for the Hawks. This is coupled with the very popular Myalup camp that was held on the weekend of 30/31 January, where nearly 50 attendees enjoyed a weekend packed full of fun and fitness. The camp successfully combined bonding sessions for the players with a program to prepare the full playing roster for another rigorous pre season designed to carry on the outstanding success of previous seasons. Club President, John Heath has predicted another season of growth with several exciting additions to the Club’s on field team nominations, including a Ladies Astro Turf team and representation in the very competitive HockeyWA provisional grades. This is in addition to the lighting upgrade to enhance training facilities which commenced in late January. The Hawks will conduct its Registration Day for both senior men and women as well as all junior players on February 20th commencing at 11-00am. A sausage sizzle will be held and all coaches and committee members will be on hand to assist in the “meet and greet” session. The club recognizes the need to provide teams in all age groups including the popular” Hook into Hockey” program. This is an excellent opportunity for members intending to continue their careers with the innovative local club to register their intentions for season 2010 as well as any prospective new comers to assess the excellent facilities offered. It is intended that the club will extend its playing roster to include a team in the highly competitive O/40 division this year. The much anticipated series of team trials against Capel Hockey Club will be conducted on the weekend of 13/14 March and will include teams in both men and women’s grades.

Further details on all club activities can be obtained by phoning Club President John Heath on 94594009 or Janson Hoskins on 0437157556

Hawks Slog It Out

February 4th, 2010 by Janson Hoskins

Hawks Slog It Out

The Southern River Hockey Club conducted its annual Pre Season training camp at Myalup Beach on the weekend of January 30/31 and was again an outstanding success. With nearly 50 attendees making the trek to the south west resort, the camp’s program was designed to combine club bonding with the commencement of pre season training. The annual road run this year was complimented by the addition of some rigorous beach work in the soft sand. The run produced some outstanding results with some excellent times being recorded by many participants. One of the most pleasing aspects to the organisers was the fact that many Myalup newcomers figured prominately in the place getters with the winner and runner up being part of that. The exercise that trainer Lenni Ligtenburg devised for the beach combined a strenuous slog through the soft sand and demonstrated the value of team work. The traditional beach cricket and volleyball was postponed due to the windy conditions. The accommodation lived up to its usual high standard and the Club wishes to acknowledge the co operation of the Myalup Indian Ocean Resort in assisting the camp to be another fantastic event.

The camp is also the signal that pre season training is under way. The initial training times will be Sundays 9-00am and we will congregate in the carpark of the Les Sands clubrooms in Gay St Gosnells. Thursday training will commence shortly. The pre season program will be co ordinated by John Heath, Janson Hoskins and Lenni Ligtenburg .

The club wishes to invite all players from last season to attend and any prospective new comers are encouraged to come down and join in. If you are new to the area or wish to take up the fulfilling sport of field hockey, feel free to attend or call janson Hoskins on 0437157556 for further information.
