HAWKS SEE THE LIGHT
The Southern River Hockey Club will see the light this year with the much anticipated lighting upgrade finally underway. Work began last week as the lead in cable was laid to signify the first stage in the installation of new lighting at Sutherlands Park. The club has been fortunate enough to secure a grant to assist in the much needed extra training lights. It is predicted that the twin light towers, that will supply over 8000 watts of illumination each will be commissioned before the 2010 hockey season begins in April. The Hawks have been in dire need of the extra lighting due to the phenomenal growth of the club in its first four years of existence. The Hawks have won the prestigious “Byrne and Judge Trophy” twice and been Premiers in various grades seven times. Season 2009 saw the club finally win its first Junior U/15 championship in what was a ground breaking achievement. This was coupled with the Ladies Top Side capping a record breaking season to secure their 2nd title in three years.
The Men were also successful with multiple teams qualifying for the finals series with several near misses but unfortunately were unsuccessful in winning the ultimate award.
The Annual Myalup Pre Season Training camp will be conducted on the weekend of January 30th/31st with over 50 attendees expected. The Hawks pride themselves on the success of the camp as fitness exercises and various activities planned assist in team bonding as well as the usual “Xmas Excess” removal. The camp signifies the commencement of the pre season program as the club begins another year aimed at increasing membership and strengthening the solid foundation set over the preceding four years.
The club is looking forward to the upcoming season with incoming Club President John Heath predicting another strong season as the club continues to attract new local players as well as welcoming back past players. It is predicted that the club will field a Women’s side on Astro Turf this year to compliment the Top Two Mens Turf teams of last season. Senior grass teams this year are expected to be fielded in several strong grades and will be supplemented by an O/40’s side as well as an O/50’team. For those wishing to play social hockey, teams will also be fielded in the HockeyWA provincial grades. The Women are expected to be increased to two grass sides to back up the Astro Turf team.
Junior teams are also expected to be substantially increased with all age groups catered for as well as a continuation of the highly successful “Hook Into Hockey” programme.
