RIP PAUL ANDREWS

October 23rd, 2009 by Janson Hoskins

The Southern River Hockey Club wishes to pass on sincere condolences to Gim-Hoon and children on the very sad passing of Club Patron Paul Andrews. Paul was instrumental in the formation of our club and his advice and guidance was invaluable. In his role as a member of parliament, he was a strong advocate for sport in the district and field hockey was one of his passions . His enthusiasm and drive was inspirational to the founding committee of the Southern River Hockey Club. His attendance at club functions was warmly welcomed and before becoming ill was regularly seen at matches and training.

RIP Paul, you will be sadly missed by all Hawk players and supporters.

HAWKS HOST VICTORIAN HOCKEY TEAM

October 21st, 2009 by Janson Hoskins

            Vets  Vs Cosmos

The Vets team played a friendly game against “Cosmos” an over 50’s team from Melbourne on Saturday 3rd October 2009 at the Perth Hockey Stadium

Despite a considerable delay getting access to the Turf, the game commenced at 4pm on a superb Saturday afternoon. There were a number of supporters for both sides which added to the atmosphere.

The veteran Hawks had the bonus of younger legs & sound skills from the likes of Paul Dixie, Dave Vanderputt, Barry Romaro, Col Stewart & President elect – John Heath.  These guys helped out by fronting on short notice with a minimum of fuss. Dave & Heathy provided a faultless umpiring display.

We were also privileged to have the two young Keane boys – Fred & Pete dust off their sticks & remind us of what good players they were in their prime. Possibly a little slower now but the skills & reading of the play still clearly evident.

Cosmos were 1 nil up at half time & ended up winning a closely contested game 2-1. They had a number of skilled players, passing the ball in a controlled manner that created a number of scoring opportunities. The end result was somewhat irrelevant due to the good spirit & camaraderie that was always to be the most important goal of the day.

After the Game, a BBQ was put on for the visitors at our clubrooms. Special thanks to Deb Vanderputt, Gill Vanderputt & Jean Coppendale for the work behind the scenes to make it all happen & run as smoothly as possible.

The Cosmos team thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing night & the hospitality put on by the Club. A trophy was presented to their key organizer – Julian Maugey who incidentally is a friend of Barry’s father Trevor from their days in India. Each Cosmos player was presented with a bottle of Windows Margaret River wine courtesy of Len & Barbara Davies to remind them of their trip to WA. This gesture was particularly well received.

The guys from Cosmos were extremely appreciative of our efforts to help make their trip to Perth a memorable one. They are great bunch of guys who even helped us tidy up the clubrooms at the end of the night.  A trip to Melbourne for a return game is well & truly on the cards.

Some photos of the day can be seen on our web site.
