HAWKS ARE PREMIERS IN 2009

September 23rd, 2009 by Janson Hoskins

HAWKS ARE PREMIERS

The Southern River Hockey Club has capped of another remarkable stand out hockey season with the club winning Premierships in two divisions. The all conquering Ladies Ones side had a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Suburban at Fletcher Park last Saturday, and in a history making result, the U/15’s side created history by becoming the first Hawks junior team to win the coveted prize in a 4-1 victory over Aquinians at Perry Lakes. The Men’s 5 side were gallant in defeat against the powerful Rangers, going down 4-2, also at Perry Lakes.
The Hawks have again proved that hockey in the region is thriving with a strong season from all its teams and with a rapidly growing membership base. The club has now won a total of 6 Grand Finals in its short four year history as well as eight Challenge Cup pennants.
The recent AGM conducted at the club saw the inaugural Club President, Lloyd Jones hand over the reins to John Heath. Lloyd decided not to re nominate this year having been the driving force in the forming of the Southern River Hockey Club and overseeing its development in the preceding four years. Lloyd will continue to be a part of the 2010 committee by holding the Vice President’s position in a supporting role to incoming President John Heath.
The Club will hold its annual Trophy Presentation evening at the Les Sands Pavilion this Friday the 25th September commencing at 7-30pm.

Grand Final match reports to follow in the near future.

SOUTHERN RIVER 5′S REPORT

September 18th, 2009 by Janson Hoskins

The Second Last Hoorah- As reported by Team Captain-Brad George

The hockey season comes to the end this week as the Metro 4 (Men’s 5’s) prepare for their shot at the trophy in the grand final. We have just completed 22 games as we had no byes and surprised ourselves with a Challenge Cup match. We had an interesting season and on recount blooded 36 players including two women!! The nucleus of the team that I have to congratulate for being there week in week out include Ben Armstrong, Ben Collier, Ports, Dixey, Trenty, Colin Stewart, and Nav. We’ve had solid support from JayJay, Kurtis, and Dave Vanderputt through the season and repeat guest appearances from other key men included Neil Worland, Frosty and McGilla. Thanks to the 20 or so players who filled and sometimes starred. However I can’t fail to mention the man who was amazing throughout the season, after breaking his finger in the middle of the season (a victory against Whitfords that he played through!) he turned up week after week to watch and encourage the crew. Well done Paul Hewson, you show the spirit of a true club man… either that or you have no life! 

The road to the finals required us to face up to Rangers at home for the first semi, only to be taught a lesson on the finer art of tagging.

This week we welcomed back Paul Hewson post clearance from the doctor and McGilla whose boss was nice enough to let him come home from the salt mines. For the second semi we faced up to the team we consider our nemesis being the dreaded black and whites, Fremantle. With such characters on their team as Shrek who thinks he is a one man steam train we managed to feel the passion of Fremantle early in the piece. The strategy for the first fifteen minutes was a calculated assault using Dave, Colin and Trenty with solid support up the centre. Ten minutes into the game after dominating the play, Trenty was handed a gift in the circle from a deadly accurate pass and didn’t fail to disappoint. First blood to the Hawks.

The pleasure of being on top quickly dissipated when Fremantle popped one back 5 minutes later from a short corner and we were all square. We trialled some substitutions for the remainder of the half but the jet lag, red bull withdrawals and missing nicotine patches were taking their toll and we lost our focus. With 5 minutes to go in the half the halves and inners combined to take the ball into the circle and Trenty with a little help from a Fremantle defender deposited number two onto the backboards.

We were lucky enough to have a strong crowd building on the sidelines and were learning what our very expert umpires meant when they pointed in directions we didn’t understand.

We regrouped on the half time break and then prepared to get back to basics. The pincer movement up the forward line and the skills of Colin and Dave dropping back in support kept Fremantle honest. We denied short corner after short corner and Nav was truly inspirational in his control of the back. Ports continue to be Ports in goals with his flashes of brilliance and then his frustrating decision making. Thank goodness brilliance won out today.

Fremantle did not give up and could sense that we were tiring. In my mind they were showing that they wanted this more than us and were prepared to do whatever was necessary to win. They continued to push forward with the ball and the body. It seemed that for first fifteen minutes of the half every time we went into their twenty five they answered and we were left sitting too high. Some fresh legs from JayJay, the experience of Frosty and Dixey reading the play like they’d written it saved our bacon.

The slowing down of the more experienced players and some silly mistakes in passing allowed Ben Armstrong to fire up and star for the final 10 of the game. From his right wing position he was taking the ball out of defense, passing to Colin and then receiving again in the centre. He was inspirational in the way he didn’t stop chasing the ball end to end for such a solid period.

The beautiful ground left us no excuses in attack and in the 50th minute of play Trenty received and converted again in the circle. We bunkered down at this point, dropping in a third full back, multiple half backs and prepared to receive the final onslaught. Fremantle have to be congratulated for fighting it out right to the last minute. Hawks 5’s have to be congratulated for playing the best game of the season. A special thanks to the supporters who kept the messages positive from the sidelines and coached the younger guys with some expert advice.

Roll on the grand final 2009,

GO YOU GOOD THINGS……..

Win or lose its all back to the Hawks Nest for celebrations/commiserations. As is traditional with this club we party with our warriors after their fantastic seasons. To all players it is important to note that whether you made finals and lost or you played hard and missed out on September action, the club is so very proud of your efforts in 2009 and we look so very much to seeing you at the Club on Saturday to have drink with our fellow members. We also look forward to celebrating the “season that was” at the Club Windup on Friday 25th and we certainly look forward to seeing you all in 2010.

THE AGM

Well done to all who attended the AGM last Thursday and we thank you all for having made the effort to contribute to ensuring that the “right people” carry us forward into 2010.

Congratulations to President Elect- John Heath.

We are familiar with John’s passion for our club and know that he is the right man to succeed Lloyd. John has been instrumental in the push to give Southern River Hockey Club the profile within Hockey WA to make sure we are recognized as a go-ahead club with a dedication to hockey within our region.

LLOYD JONES

A few words about our outgoing leader that needs to be recognized. For those who may be unaware, it was Lloyd who developed the idea of creating the Southern River Hockey Club and it was his drive and ambition to ensure that he surrounded himself with a team of dedicated people to make that dream a reality. He enlisted the assistance of some quality people to create a club that was to be so very successful in bringing hockey back to the Gosnells region. In a very short space of time the club had organized club uniforms, nominated 5 teams(including 2 juniors), secured a very capable committee and appointed the highly credentialed Leighton Keane as our inaugural Club Coach. It was Lloyd’s untiring efforts behind the scenes that saw Barry Vanderputt, John Heath, Nina Keane, Jean Coppendale, Fred Keane, Cindy Heath, Brian Coppendale, Kevin Pethick and Janson Hoskins form the basis of a strong committee to oversee the birth of the Hawks. Many volunteers saw the merits of forming a new venture and willingly put their “shoulder to the wheel” both physically and financially to ensure that we had a strong foundation. It must be noted that Llyod was the conduit that glued these people together and has worked tirelessly on the two critical issues of 1) Club Constitution and 2) Club Liquor Licence. These two “red tape issues” alone are the make or break of any volunteer organization and Lloyd left no stone unturned to make them a reality.

LLOYD JONES-WE SALUTE YOU FOR A FANTASTIC 4 YEARS AS CLUB PRESIDENT AND THANK YOU FOR GIVING US…….

Match Report

By Barry Romaro

Metro Two Gold v Modernians

“THE FAIRYTALE IS OVER”

We gave it our best shot on the weekend but we were beaten by a better side on the day. I must give credit to Modernians they put us under pressure from the start of the game and were relentless to the end. For the record with were beaten six goals to two. The score line looks bad but it was not that one sided as we did not convert our chances when we had them but Mod’s did convert theirs. We have had a sensational year making the finals from very long odds and I am extremely proud of my “troupes”. Our team has been very successful right from its conception and up until now we had played off in the grand final every year. We have moved up a grade at the end of each year and at the end of last year we were promoted three grades and we knew it would be a tough assignment. We are all very proud of what we achieved and we are especially grateful to the gent’s from our Metro Three side that completed our side and helped us make and play in the finals without them we could not have achieved finishing the year after the finals in third place. We had a wonderfully large vocal crowd that cheered us on to the final whistle and like us not giving in even when we were several goals down. I would also like to make mention of how important it was to us to have a few of the senior members of the club just quietly whispering in our ears how proud they were of our achievements, as we were still at that stage very down on our selves and their thoughtful words helped alleviate the pain of defeat. The spirit is strong at Southern River Hockey Club and we will be stronger, better and more determined for next season.

Go Hawks!

Southern River Hockey Club Vol.4 Ed 16

CLUB AGM 730PM THURSDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER-CLUBROOMS

TWO STRAIGHT INTO GRAND FINALS

After the first weekend of finals we have two teams straight into Grand Finals The Women one side following a hard fought victory have qualified for their 3rd straight Grand Final appearance in a row !! Great effort girls. Read more in Paula’s report and enjoy your well earned week off. The other side straight through is John Heath’s all conquering under fifteen side. They too had a hard fought victory over quality opposition and have earned a weeks rest before the big GF.
The Mens 3’s side defied all odds and gallantly accounted for Melville courtesy of “Golden Goal Gradisen” For those who don’t know JG reserves his best for when it matters most. A Premiership last year was won by a JG Golden Goal. They now front up to Mods at Vic Park this Saturday at 3.15pm to see if they can again qualify for their 4th consecutive Grand Final. I told you all three weeks ago this side has that famous “Hawk never say die “ attitude and predicted that they could be playing hockey deep into September. Read Barrys report for a scintillating account of their remarkable victory.

The Mens 5 side battled hard against the best in their grade and with a bit of luck could have pulled off a remarkable result. Unfortunately a couple of missed chances saw them on the back foot and Rangers completed a comfortable 3-0 victory. A battle against Fremantle this weekend and if a victory can be achieved will earn a rematch against rangers to determine the champions.

The under 13’s also qualified to stay alive with a fantastic 6-1 thrashing of Vic Park and this has earned them a crack at Mazenod this weekend and victory will see them into the GF against Hale. They have split the results with Mazenod in the regular home and away season and lost narrowly to Hale twice. Good chance to make it and then its all on the day.

Unfortunately the Mens Twos side went down in the sudden death semi final against Rockingham 3-2 and finish the season in 4th spot. The club is proud of your efforts and you have provided tremendous depth and have backed up to the Mens Ones when injury robbed them of their best starting line up. Still performed strongly and with a slice of luck the result could have benn different. Well done guys…. See you all next year for revenge !!!

CLUB FINALS DAY

For those of you who supported the club last Saturday and assisted in the very successful Club Final’s Day, thank you very much. In what was a fantastic advertisement for the Southern River Hockey Club we can all be proud of the very positive comments about our efforts. The day, despite the weather, was well supported by the visiting clubs and all 7 teams stayed and enjoyed our hospitality. The bar did a roaring trade and the kitchen fed the starving all day and into the evening. Great to see our away teams coming back to enjoy the “Hawks Nest”. In particular the Womens top side. Unfortunately the Mens 2’s side had an 8-30pm game at Rockingham and couldn’t stay.

A SINCERE THANK YOU FOR THE VOLUNTEER UMPIRES ON THE DAY:

Southern River 2 vs Subs 1
They always say finals is a different ball game didn’t realise how right they were, well it was either that or most of the team forgot to eat their Weeties. Subs were definitely hungry for the ball today, the sidelines packed with supporters cheering them on (obviously not like the hawks who have nearly every team in finals contention) making it difficult for the Hawks to get on top of the play. The game was more competitive than we were expecting. For a change Nat our keeper was put under a bit more pressure than she had seen all season, but was definitely up to the challenge. Miranda was exceptional in left full back and Michelle had her work cut out for her playing in right fullback (not her usual position). Karyn, Sass and Chris were as usual dominant across the half back line and the forwards did have quite a few opportunities to score but unfortunately seemed to let a few more get away than usual. Our release of the ball was definitely not quick enough today, trying to beat the opposition when players are free and ready to run or in a position to shoot needs to improve. A Big Big thanks to Amy for helping us out. We did make it a little difficult for ourselves today but it’s all good because we are in the GRAND FINAL and it is our year to collect another premiership. Let’s go show them why we finished the season top of the ladder. A big thanks to our Big Little cheer squad, Karyns mum, Karyns children, Gail and Fred.

Metro 2 Gold Match Report
By Barry Romaro 5/9/2009
Southern River threes V’s Melville
“DETERMINATION”
We new we were in for a hard game and we were prepared for it. We had not beaten Melville in the regular season this year and we did not expect to meet them in the first final as we expected them to finish in second spot. We got away to a good start attacking well through our midfield and linking well with our inside strikers and our wingers. We were unlucky to turn over the ball inside our defensive half when we had over-committed to an attacking move giving Melville a huge advantage with our defense unable to cover all of their attackers and Melville slotted in an easy goal. We went into the half time break still down by a single goal but we were confident we could still win this game. I made the call that we would win this half and that’s what we went out and did. We scored our equalizing goal though a great move with Troy, Ian and john who drew a defender in the circle and passed off to Arron who slammed home a great goal. Melville went all out in attack from that point on having numerous shots on goal only to be denied by Noel or our defensive back line. Our back line faced over fifteen short corners many of them end on end but we kept the score to one all at the full time whistle. Now it was time for the sudden death golden goal time. A quick chat amongst the team and we were bristling with confidence as we have won from this position before and new we could do it again. The first half of extra time play was basically a stalemate with neither side really having any chances. During the second half of sudden death time Melville had two very good shots on goal only to be denied again by our determined defense. We pushed hard through our midfield and had Melville trapped inside their defensive zone. Finally our chance had come to win this game. We had a good shot on goal that was cleared to the sideline but was picked off by Barry who lunged with a last gasp effort and slapped the ball into the circle. Somehow the ball cut a path through many players and sticks only to be slotted away for a golden goal by John Gradisen. I wish to thank the our spectators who shouted support to us as we tried desperately to win this game. Also a special thanks to the “super fours” because we could not of achieved this result with out you guys.

WOMEN 1’S MATCH REPORT 25/9/09

Ladies 1s 29/08/08
Coach: Fred Keane
Captain: Karyn
Southern River 5 vs Harlequins 0
Harlies were celebrating 40 years so we thought they might come out swinging and they did (especially one of their defenders). Harlies had a couple of Div 1s players at their disposal that gave us a little more of a challenge than we were expecting. However the Hawks skill level was on par if not better and the Hawks had complete control of the game with 90% of the game being played in the forward 25. The score line doesn’t show how many shots were had on goals (which could be a good thing) and it must be said that the Harlequin keeper did some beautiful saves (damn her). Gail put her best foot forward and gave everyone a scare when a couple of the opposition went at her with errant tackles but it’s okay she didn’t score (see not as easy as it looks from the sidelines). Karyn tried all through the second half to hear the lovely metal sound of the ball hitting the backboard but unfortunately only 1 goal was scored at that end of the ground. All of the Hawks attackers had to have eyes everywhere waiting for the axe wielding harlequin defender who thought the ball just had to cross the 25 and she could start swinging. A very eventful game with exceptional team play hopefully holding us in good stead for the finals ladies…

“FINAL FOUR”
Our destiny was in our own hands today, a win or a draw would be enough to get us fourth spot and a chance to play in the finals. This year has sure been a long haul and all the members of the Metro Two side can feel proud of their achievements. This Grade has proven to be very tough for us and making the finals was not really expected, but our core group of players expect nothing other than September hockey! We once again had to beg borrow and steal to get eleven players on the field as season ending injuries have taken a toll on our playing group. We had no end of players offering their services even after they already played in an earlier fixture. A big thanks to Noel, Danny, Ben, Kurtis and Adam who although he has become a regular member in our side he also fronted up for the Two’s turf side earlier in the day. We controlled this game from start to finish today and I feel all players had the skill to out play their direct opponent. The goals scored today were all field goals and they certainly got our crowd cheering. John chimed in with a couple, one being a rare full blooded hit into the netting and Kurtis and JayJay scored one each. The ball movement was sound throughout the match and we will be well served by taking this form into the finals. Next week we will probably play Melville a side we have not managed to beat this year but that will not be a problem for this side as we have enjoyed the challenge of playing sides well above the caliber we have been accustomed too in the past. I hope we get a good number of players down to the club this Thursday to train as we will need to fill a few spots once again, so I will be on the lookout for players with some fitness and touch and in particular from the Metro Four side. A special thanks to all our supporters as they made the day all that more exciting.
GO HAWKS!

ONE LAST TIME
By Deb Clearwater
Well I can’t believe the end of season has come around so soon. The day had threatened to be wet but we were lucky and the sun shone, albeit with a very cool wind blowing. The girls were keen to end their season with a win and headed to Willetton’s home ground full of purpose and a desire to erase the loss from their last game against Westside Wolves. With 10 minutes to go before the game the girls were still 1 player down, Robyn had not shown up. After a number of frantic phone calls we find out she had had to go to the airport and would not be coming to the game. Lou then puts in the mercy call to Tilly to see if she can get from Southern River to Willetton as soon as possible to help us out. Needless to say the girls took the field 1 player down and hoping they could keep Willetton at bay until Tilly could get there. To cover our missing Centre Forward, Lou brought Deb in from the wing and they played the first 25 minutes without a Right Wing.
Southern River Gold took the first hit off and headed off up the field towards Willetton’s goal. A misplaced foot just outside the circle saw the ball come back down the field towards Southern Rivers goal. The game continued in this fashion for most of the first half. Up and back, up and back but some excellent defence from the undermanned Southern River Gold team ensured that Willetton did not get any points on the board. Southern River Gold had an excellent chance to put points on the board late in the second half but Rachel, when the pressure of being faced with an open goal, had what we all have had at some time during our playing careers that “Oh My God” thought and tried to hit the ball instead of pushing which gave Willetton that split second chance to regroup. Southern River Gold swooped on the deflection again and again put were unlucky not to get it in due the some great defence from Willetton.
Tilly arrived with about 10 minutes left to go in the first half and I have never seen so many happy faces on a team at one time. With Tilly’s arrival we saw a change in positions with Annie moving up from Fullback to Right Inner and Lenni moving out to Right Wing. Deb and Jo changed between Centre Forward and Centre Half whenever each player needed to catch their breath and Tilly took up the vacant Fullback position.
The girls had been running and chasing the ball down like a team possessed and to their credit went into half time with the scores nil all.
The second half played pretty much the same as the first. Southern River would attack Willetton’s goal then Willetton would attack Southern Rivers goal. Both teams were keen to get points on the board but again great defence kept the ball out of the goals. Southern River Gold worked well as a team and moved the ball out wide and back in again with some great passes. Rachel had a fantastic game out on the Left wing and Annie had some great runs up the middle from Inner (a position she hadn’t played before) but no matter how hard the girls tried they just couldn’t get the points on the board.
The final whistle blew as the girls were once again attacking Willetton’s goal. The final score was 0 – 0. I think this score, although it wasn’t the win the girls were after, was a fair score for the game that was played. Both teams played well and their defence was unshakable so although it wasn’t the win I’m sure both teams were chasing it wasn’t a loss either.
This team has grown so much since the start of the year – who would have thought that with so many new players (not just to the club to but hockey itself) would do so well. They can hold their heads up high and the opposition next year better look out as this team can only get better.

GREAT JOB GIRLS it’s been a pleasure.
