Metro 2 gold match report

Southern River threes V’s Fremantle

Reinforcements needed”

It all started on Thursday night when we sat down to pick the sides for the weekend, we knew we were going to struggle for numbers from the outset. The above heading and the first paragraph were used the last time we played Fremantle. It seems that we always have problems fielding full sides against Fremantle and today was going to be one of them. Luck was on our side today as we were lent two players from our turf squad Conner and Adam. Both Connor and Adam played very well for us with Adam playing well in a very foreign role to him. Our luck continued with Boyd coming back from an injury that had seen him miss four weeks and I had not counted on him being available. We started the game with confidence but we were caught out by a long ball early that that resulted in a goal only seconds after john scored a remarkable goal only for the Fremantle umpire to blow his whistle too early not allowing us an advantage. The next fifteen minutes saw us let in another two goals one that Maradona would be proud of. The half time break saw us three nil down but our talk was positive and we all agreed to back our own players ability and play short passes to any genuine lead and have confidence with each other. To our credit we did exactly what we talked about and out- played Fremantle in the second half and we had plenty of chances to score and they had none. Although we did not win this game there were a lot of positive aspects and I feel we will take these into our big game against Mods next week. Final score three nil win to Fremantle. See you all at the club open day.

Southern River 4 vs Subs 1

With a challenge cup replay the Hawks were behind the eight ball from the start with key players missing from the side and having to rely on players from the second side (thanks heaps for helping us out yet again) but the Hawks came out fighting and should have been a couple of goals up midway thru the first half. It was not to be with quite a few near misses and deserved free hits from both sides going unnoticed the Hawks only managed to score 1 goal against Subs which was definitely not a true indication of the game (a very nice goal by Chris who has definitely perfected the weave in thru the defence and then fire). Hawks were 1 zip going into the second half and then it happened much to the horror of players and our spectators Subs managed to get the ball past our half, past our defence and OH NO past our goalie. The scores were now even at 1 a piece. The Hawks continued to battle and have forward dominance but much to Subs credit we could not get it past their defence/goalie but with a stroke of luck (lots of skill) with only minutes of the game to go a bullet pass from outside the D on the left side of the field found its way onto Faye’s stick which then diverted off a defenders stick into the goals phew it was now 2-1, although we were now back in the lead it was no time to rest on our laurels and we continued to fight for more goals and with true grit and determination from the entire team I was lucky enough to be rewarded with a goal which I belted in after a rebound, rebound, rebound, rebound out from a short corner. Then the sealer and what a sealer it was, if only someone was taping the game we could replay and replay the perfect goal, short corner pass to the top of the D, perfect trap by Karyn and then SLAM the perfect hit and although the goalie managed to get a bit of pad on the ball it was not enough to stop it from slamming into the back board behind her, it was fabulous and a terrific way to finish off a very very hard fought game. Well done to all the ladies who kept on run, run, running. A BIG THANKS to Lou, Robyn and Faye who helped us field a full side and a thanks to our supporters and a big welcome back to Gail who I hear may be back playing for us sooner than we first thought!!

YET ANOTHER VANDERPUTT IN ACTION-TILLY IN CONTROL

ROUGH AND TUMBLE

By Deb Clearwater

Saturday, 25th July, Southern River Gold was off to Nedlands to take on Subs at their home ground. It’s a cool clear day and the girls were eager to get on the field and improve on last week’s results.

The game started as with previous games. Southern River Gold attacking Subs goal, the difference this week was they managed to capitalise on a great team short corner. Annie hit the ball out, Jess trapping it outside the D, passing off to Deb, Deb then sending it towards the goal where a number of Southern River Gold players were hungry for the ball and that elusive goal. Robyn was the lucky one who got the ball past the goalie and over the line. Goal to Southern River Gold!

The team elated by their early goal headed back to halfway quickly ready to go again. Some great defence from Southern River Gold kept Subs from a quick reply goal. Then Southern River Gold was back up the other end peppering the Subs goal. Amy had a number of chances to level the score but couldn’t quite pull it off. Then she got it on the backboard only to have the goal disallowed dur to her feet helping it across the line. So close again.

The second half was a tough and very physical half. It saw Lenni warned for rough play although it was Deb who was taking the brunt of Subs frustration with her receiving a stick around the leg, a ball and stick to her thigh and countless elbows and shoulders. Subs came off best in the second half by scoring early to level the scores.

No matter how hard the girls tried Southern River Gold couldn’t push on for the win and had to settle for a well played draw.

The improvement in the team continues. Look out Kwinana Tigers, we’re due for a win!

Please don’t forget to keep that fee money coming in. The club has paid its moieties to HockeyWA to enable us to field teams each week. Its now up to you to repay for the privilege to play the game you love each week. It has to be stressed that the club makes no financial gain from your fees. All money received from you pays either HockeyWA , The Gosnells City Council and The Les Sands Pavilion. Save yourself the embarrassment of being tapped on the shoulder and go and see Jean or Barry to discuss your situation before they come and see you !! All discussions regarding payment or payment arrangements are strictly confidential and are not discussed at committee level. If you experiencing some sort of financial discomfort during these economic times feel free to speak to Barry or Jean and you fill find a sympathetic ear and a mutually beneficial solution can be obtained.

YES…… ANOTHER VANDERPUTT… THIS TIME CARL…….

TILL NEXT WEEK.. JANSON (vicjan1201@bigpond.com)

HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL AT THE HAWK CLUB DAY ON SATURDAY.

Seventeen’s Rule”

Today’s game was a must win game for us to maintain our touch with the top four, after slipping to fifth place during our umpiring bye two weeks ago. The odds were against us from the start as I had four players unavailable for this week’s game and WA hockey had changed our start time without informing us resulting in two players not showing up because I could not contact them. All was not lost as the under seventeen’s had a bye and were keen to get a game with us and we were happy to have their assistance. We started well and had JTA on the back foot from the start. We knocked in five goals missed about five sitters and had a heap of other chances. You would think that we played well, but the reality was that we didn’t play to our potential. We need to lift our running when off the ball to assist the ball carrier or we will be pummeled against the top four sides and that will only be improved if I can get more than five of our team to training on a regular basis. Thankyou again to the three juniors Kurtis, Thomas and Kyle they all played very well for us in a variety of roles and certainly held their own against much older opponents. With quality juniors like that our club has a very bright future. I would also like to thank the many spectators for creating such a great atmosphere and to Janson and co for setting up the fine ambience enjoyed by all. As luck would have it the results in other games went our way and we are back in the top four and we hope to maintain this to make the finals.

FOILED AGAIN!

By Deb Clearwater

Saturday the 18th July 2009 the clouds were threatening to open up and put a dampener (literally) on the game between Southern River Gold and John’s XXIII.
Southern River Gold had a slightly depleted squad with Jo still in the UK, Lenni laid up in bed and Emma no longer playing. But they were able to call on Tilly, Collette and Steph from the Juniors along with Jasmine from the ones who was in goal.
This report reads very similar to the last one with Southern River Gold dominating the 1st half but unable to put points on the board. Southern River Gold had a number of chances to get those ever elusive goals with a couple of shots missing by mere centimetres. Great positioning by Robyn at Centre Forward, Faye and Collette on wings combined with some blinding clearing hits saw numerous breaks down the field. Only to be pipped at the posts.

The score at half time 0 – 0.

Southern River Gold was confident they could take the game in the second half only to get caught off guard by a quick goal from John’s XXIII. Southern River Gold’s defence stood strong against a number of short corners and their forwards did everything they could to even the score. Collette was in excellent position to deflect a shot in the dying seconds only to see it miss once again by centimetres.

Southern River Gold – that elusive win is coming – we are ready – seize the day!

Southern River 9 vs Dellas 1

Ladies 1s 18/07/09

Coach: Fred Keane

Captain: Karyn

Yes you did see correctly, they did it to us again. When we manage to keep so many teams out of our goals Dellas yet again have slipped thru the net and scored another goal against us. As long as they don’t go telling the rest of the opposition teams how they do it we should be right….Even though hockey is supposed to be a winter sport and played in the rain when you go a couple of seasons without this happening you get kind of used to it and I think I speak for most when I say

YOU CAN STOP RAINING ON SATURDAYS NOW…. We were down a couple of key players and yet again had to call on the assistance from our junior teams and the second ladies team so that we could field a side and we did so playing with only 10 players for the first 15minutes, but after that we became almost unstoppable with nearly all on the forward line scoring a goal. There were so many great plays it will be hard to mention them all (so I won’t even try) it was a great team game with gallant efforts from everyone and this was evident by the fact that every player received a vote in the 3, 2, 1s making this game one of the hardest to pick the best on ground. Keep up the super effort ladies you are doing the Hawks proud. A big thanks to Jessica, Jasmine, Amy and Deb for helping us out this weekend, and again to Ang for sorting all the paper work out for me!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WOMENS 1’S SIDE ON A GREAT CHALLENGE CUP VICTORY !!

Challenge Cup
Southern River 5 vs Subs 0
Some games can be unexpectedly hard and this game was no exception. Subs were hot to trot and dominant right from the start which put the mighty Hawks on the back foot a little but with most of our players getting over there pre-game nerves it didn’t take us too long to switch on and start our own fight. Jessica was awesome in the back line taking control of any forward attack coming her way and when there looked to be no way forward was even daring enough to flick the ball over the top to an always running Kate. Both Jessica and Miranda had their work cut out for them as Subs used both sides of the field, Miranda was in her element clearing the ball to the waiting halves with some precision hits (very nice). Nat who was on the field and not in her usual position of keeper finally got to see some action and was a very handy defender. Jacinta was also strong over the ball and getting lots of touches and continued to push forward much to the exasperated Subs team dismay (good to see you running again). Yet again the halves were running havoc all over the field with Karyn getting plenty of touches and setting up some impressive forward plays and Chris having her usual commanding presence on the field in which ever position she slots into and there seemed to be a few different ones this week. Amy (one of our subs) had a few good runs in the right half position weaving thru opposition and was well supported by Kate, Chris, Karyn and Paula. Finally late in the first half the Hawks managed to capitalise on a pass across goals with Hayley hitting in a lovely reverse stick (too lazy to get her bum around) some say it was a fluke (I think that was Neil) but Hayley was out to prove it wasn’t by putting in another reverse stick goal early in the second half (no it didn’t look as pretty as the first but Hey it did the job). Then the flood gates opened as the Hawks bobbed up exuding confidence, showing they were the fittest on the field and controlling all positions. Subs were still very persistent and giving our back line a work out with a couple of breakaway passes but the Hawks defence and Jasmine (our now adopted goal keeper) gave them absolutely no chance to score!! (great keeping Jasmine thanks for helping us out). Kate then scored and so did Chris. Tracey and Michelle were pivotal on the left with opportunities to get themselves on the score board but were denied. Four goals up what do you have to lose so we tried something different, our next short was taken from the right side instead of the usual left it went straight to Chris who trapped and belted the ball towards goal, Paula managed to get her stick in the way (was probably going into goals anyway) and put it across the face of goals where a waiting Karyn slotted it in straight past the keeper. A big thanks to the very very vocal supporters who I’m sure spurred us on to win and to Fred who was the best coach on ground. A well deserved, hard fought and great team win. It was good to see everyone rise to the challenge, Well Done Ladies!!

Best on ground: Kate, Karyn, Jessica
Goal Scorers: Hayley 2, Karyn 1, Kate 1, Chris 1

On behalf of the Southern River Hockey Club, three cheers to the ladies on a fantastic result. The Challenge Cup should be renamed the “Hawks” cup as the remarkable record continues in this annual match !!!

The mens 5 side also qualified for the Challenge Cup in their grade and despite a courageous and valiant attempt to bring home the bacon, they were beaten by Rangers. One must acknowledge that Rangers field just one side in HockeyWA and they were up against our 5th side. That achievement alone signifies a moral victory for Brad George and his warriors. The game may have been lost but the respect you guys have won is as good as a victory. Well done to the
team and remember the Club is so proud of your efforts. Keep it up fellas and rewards will soon come your way !!!!!!!!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADER

Presidents Message

How time flies while we are having fun – who would believe we are already half way through the 2009 season and not doing too bad on the field, with 2 of our senior teams contesting the Challenge Cup finals.

This season we managed to field two extra senior teams – one in the mens competition and a second in the womens competition. More importantly we were also able to nominate an under 17’s side which importantly helps bridge the gap in picking young players from this age bracket to play senior hockey.

We are finding it more difficult winning more games than we did in our first three years due mainly to the committee nominating higher grades in an attempt to prove we can play better hockey and believing players will accept the challenge. At this stage half the teams are in the four and threatening to contest the finals in September – a fine effort to date.

Congratulations to one of Fred Keanes womens teams for contesting the Challenge Cup and going on to win the cup. Well done Fred and a great effort from all the players on a magnificent win.

Congratulations also to our Metro 4 team led by Brad George who made the Cup but were not successful. I am confident the players would have learnt a lot from the game and will work a bit harder at training to contest the finals and go on to win a premiership.

I can once again confirm that our committee is working tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of our hockey club and our coaches are working even harder at making sure the game is played correctly and in true spirit.

With the assistance of Ben Armstrong we are putting together a Business Plan. The plan will play an integral role in managing our great Hockey Club and will assist in achieving its goals over the next five years.

Special thanks to all those assisting with our young juniors in particular to Cindy Heath and Dave Vanderputt and to all those who are assisting with the coaching. Also a special thanks to the volunteer umpires and some of the parents who have unreservedly stepped forward to help in the kitchen and with running of the teams.

Also many thanks to Clive Reader for successfully running Minkey Hockey for the tiny tots. From all reports the kids enjoyed the treat and thank you Clive for giving these youngsters an opportunity to play and enjoy our great game.

Finally, I welcome all the new members to the Southern River Hockey Club and trust you enjoy your hockey as well as the wonderful facility and more importantly the friendliness extended by all our members.

Remember, “The idea is to participate – winning is not everything…”

Go Hawkers..!!

Lloyd Jones
PRESIDENT

THANKS-
1) JOHN ELLIS FOR THE GREAT JOB IN INSTALLING THE BUNKER LIGHTS IN THE ALSFRESCO AREA. NOW WE ALL CAN ENJOY SOME GREAT AMBIENCE AFTER GAMES WITH AN ALE OR TWO …. NO MORE DARK SCARY NIGHTS !!!!

2) PAUL DIXIE FOR HIS STIRLING EFFORT IN HELPING ME WITH THE LINE MARKING LAST WEEK IN THE POURING RAIN !!

CLUB OPEN DAY

As mentioned last week the Club is having an Open Day/ Social event on Saturday 1 st August at the clubrooms. Apart from 5 games being played, the “Alfresco” will be open and Nina’s kitchen will be firing out culinary delight throughout the afternoon and into the evening. The day begins at 2-00pm with the first round of fixtures and then carries on to the 3-30 game and then straight into the festivities. We ask that all players attempt to come to club after your game or stay if you are playing at home. Supporters, friends and family are encouraged to stay on after the last game and experience the atmosphere of the Hawks nest as dark settles. Hot showers both male and female are available following your game so be encouraged to bring a change of clothes and continue to enjoy the clubs hospitality. Nina will keep her kitchen open to feed you and your friends and family and of course Barman Brian will have a plentiful supply of refreshment to replenish your thirst after your match. Away teams are requested to make a genuine effort to support this event and enjoy our club !!!!!

There is no charge and you have been given 3 weeks notice so keep the evening free.
Please note there will be no break between the end of the 3-30 game and the function-it will be seamless so come, enjoy, stay !!!

SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

Every week the back pages are dedicated to recognise our valuable sponsors. As you can also see from the Banners hanging in the rooms, we have a fantastic group of Club Sponsors to whom the club is appreciative. All these people ask in return is the support of our members and their friends and family. Take the time to look at the back pages, it may save you some money and support them as they support us.

CHALLENGE CUP EDITION

Well here we are, unbelievably at the half way mark of the season. The Challenge Cup weekend always symbolizes the official mid season reflection of how our teams are fairing. Again the Hawks are privileged to have two teams competing in the “Mid Season Grand Final”

Congratulations to our Ladies No 1 team for making their 3rd successive Challenge Cup match. In fact in their 3 years of existence these ladies have made this cup their own !! Again they will play off to bring home the spoils. Fred Keane has done a remarkable job with this team and they have certainly carried all before them so far this season. This is even more noteworthy when one considers that this team is made up of half newcomers to the club and our regular stars. They have not only made them feel welcome but the whole team has “gelled” together remarkably well and the reward for their effort is the chance to hang another pennant on the club house wall. Good luck ladies…… The Hawks are with you !!!!!

THE SURPRISE PACKET !!

This one crept up on us a little bit. Our Mens Metro 4 side has had a strong second leg of the first half of the season and surprised most pundits by storming into the Challenge Cup Final this weekend. Brad George and his intrepid band of Hawkers have slowly but surely started to get the wheels in motion and have had some significant wins against some quality opposition. Again this team has to be commended as they are made up of a lot of newcomers to the club as well as some experience “old stagers” from last years victorious Vets side. The guile and experience coupled with the youthful exuberance should see a strong showing from this team. Support them as the “ Go For Glory”

Three Old Men

“Sixty is the worst age to be,” said the
60-year-old man. “You always feel like you have to pee and most of the
time you stand there and nothing comes out.”

“Ah, that’s nothin,” said the 70-year-old.
“When you’re seventy, you don’t have a bowel movement any more. You
take laxatives, eat bran, sit on the toilet all day and nothin’ comes
out!”

“Actually,” said the 80-year -old, “Eighty is
the worst age of all.”

“Do you have trouble peeing, too?” asked the
60-year old.

“No, I pee every morning at 6:00. I pee like a racehorse on a flat
rock; no problem at all.”

“So, do you have a problem with your bowel
movement?”

“No, I have one every morning at 6:30.”

Exasperated, the 60-year-old said, “You pee every
morning at 6:00 and crap every morning at 6:30…… So what’s so bad about
being 80?

“I don’t wake up until 7:00!”

THE GAMES
Metro 2 gold match report
By Barry Romaro 29/6/2009
Southern River threes V’s Victoria Park Pirates
“ARE WE ANY BETTER”
After being soundly beaten by the Pirates in round three by eight goals to nil, we were on a mission to improve. We have been playing good hockey for over four weeks and this game would show us how much we have improved. Just like the last few weeks we started well moving the ball short and backing each other up and I knew early that we had surprised Pirates with our improvement. We went into the half time break down one nil. We had a very positive talk about what we were doing right and where we could improve. The main thing we believed was that we needed to maintain the intensity and not panic when they carried the ball. We played well in our second half but the Pirates ended up running over us towards the end with the result being a five to nil win to them. It was still a good game for us but rushing our tackling in our back half caused some of the goals. The tackling is a point we will work on over the next few weeks. The Pirates will have to look out for us in the finals as we are vastly improving every week.
Thanks very much to the spectators who gave us great encouragement from the sidelines.
Go Hawks!

Our defensive line had a different flavour this week with Jessica and Jacinta starting with the full back roles and playing them very well, Jessica read most of the play and intercepted excellently Jacinta trapped well and moved the ball out to the half line and if I’m not mistaken had her first hit of the ball which surprised herself by going quite a distance (well done). The half back line were as usual dominant however with the ball bouncing all over the ground a few managed to get thru and give Mods some opportunities to score but Miranda, Jessica, Jacinta and our fill in keeper Jasmine(thankyou) were up to the task of clearing it back out. The forward attack saw a couple of unlikely players pop up for a few touches with Michelle starring in the centre forward position and scoring a lovely goal from the top of the D and Jacinta getting stick onto a bullet of a pass to see it rocket into goals they both should have had more but it was not to be. Sass also managed to get a few touches playing both left half and in the right inner position and was unlucky not to have a goal or two against her name. Our shorts, trapping and wayward hitting let us down today but I am sure we will get all of that sorted before next week’s Challenge Cup game. Well played ladies!!

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY
By Deb Clearwater

Saturday the 4th July was slightly overcast no wind and more importantly no rain, in other words “perfect hockey weather”.
Southern River Gold took on Mod’s at our home ground and it was good to see some of the club on the sideline to cheer us on.
With a few of our players away sick, injured and on holidays Fred had to make a few positional changes with Deb going to Centre Half, Robyn to Centre Forward and Amy up into Inner to take advantage of her attacking ability. In fact, most of the team was playing in a different position at some stage through the game.
Southern River Gold won the toss and chose to defend the west end goal.
The game started well for Southern River Gold with some great defence and excellent attacking runs. This resulted in the first 3 short corners of the game. Unfortunately, Southern River Gold was unable to convert this passage of play into points on the board. Faye was very unfortunate to have her goal denied as she was in position on the corner post and got the deflection perfectly.
Southern River Gold had most of the possession in the first half so were stunned when about halfway through the first half Mod’s scored a goal against the passage of play, then shortly after scored another goal to put them ahead 2 – 0 at half-time.
The second half was pretty much the same as the first with Southern River Gold doing some line breaking runs but unable to capitalise on these with points on the board. Lou had a scorching run up the middle from fullback to take Mod’s by surprise (and herself I think).
Then Southern River Gold were awarded another short corner but this time a much practised move between Annie and Lou resulted in Lou scoring a great goal (resulting in another sprint down the field – this time in celebration). Score now 2 – 1.
Although Southern River Gold kept the pressure on Mod’s they were unable to score another goal, the final score 2 – 1 to Mod’s.
I would have to say that this game was one of the girls best to date with everyone on the team contributing 100% (it was very had to pick our 3, 2, 1 at the end of the game). Unfortunately the final score doesn’t really tell the true story of the game.
The girls are improving each week and I’m sure that will soon be reflected on the score board. Keep up the great work girls.

Metro 2 gold match report

Southern River threes V’s Curtin Trinity Pirates
“A Solid Display”
This weeks game was a must win situation for us, if we could beat Curtin trinity we would take fourth spot on the ladder. We started with a rush but they held us well and started to counter attack us. Our team approach today was to pass it early and attack and harass the ball carrier, much the same has we have been able to do in the last few weeks. After an unproductive first ten minutes we were on the score board and full of confidence. Our ball movement really had the Pirates on the back foot and it was not long before we had another goal to celebrate. We went in at half time with three goals to nil advantage. We spoke about leading to the ball carrier in attack at half time and also chasing down the opposition ball carrier and we did it to perfection during the second half. This resulted in a good display of hockey for our spectators and a solid workout for us. Final score Hawk’s 5-defeated Old Curtin trinity nil.
Next week we face Victoria Park and the last time we played them we went down by seven goals so it will be a mighty test for us to see how much we have improved since round three.
Thankyou to all our supporters it’s great to have supporters stand in the freezing wind and give us such great encouragement. I hope all of us can attend training more often as we still need to train as a team to play as a team.
GO HAWKS!

Ladies 1s 27/06/09
Umpiring round.
A BIG thanks to the ladies who were able to complete this round of umpiring duties. It is never easy trying to persuade people to do things that don’t come naturally like umpiring but for the person organising it, it makes it oh so much easier when people are readily available and take on these duties without any gripe. Thank you.
THANKS TO BARMAN BRIAN FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE IN HELPING ME MARK THE GROUNGS IN THE POURING RAIN LAST FRIDAY !!

THE FUNNY ONE
A married couple were on holiday in Jamaica . They were touring around the market-place looking at the goods and such, when they passed a small sandal shop. From inside they heard the shopkeeper with a Jamaican accent say, ‘You foreigners! Come in. Come into my humble shop.’
So the married couple walked in.
The Jamaican said to them, ‘I ‘ave some special sandals I tink you would be interested in. Dey makes you wild at sex.’
Well, the wife was really interested in buying the sandals after what the man claimed, but her husband felt he really didn’t need them, being the Sex God that he was.
The husband asked the man, ‘How could sandals make you a sex freak?’
The Jamaican replied, ‘Just try dem on, Mon.’
Well, the husband, after some badgering from his wife, finally gave in and tried them on.

As soon as he slipped them onto his feet, he got this wild look in his eyes, something his wife hadn’t seen before!!
In the blink of an eye, the husband grabbed the Jamaican, bent him over the table, yanked down his pants, ripped down his own pants, and grabbed a firm hold of the Jamaican’s thighs.

The Jamaican began screaming: ‘You got dem on de wrong feet!’
