WOUNDED HAWKS

This year has seen an unprecedented run of injuries with some players having their season cut short by the half way mark . If you are one of them, our thoughts are with you and we hope to see you back next year bigger and better as the Hawks continue to do battle without your invaluable contribution.

HOORAY FOR BOLLYWOOD !!

THANKS

To all members for co operating with the recent call for goal removal after training and making an effort to visit the “Hawks Nest after training and games. Well done ….. the response has been fantastic !! I suppose it also co- incides with the return of Nina and her band of culinary experts as they again strive to feed the starving millions ……. (ahem I mean starving Hawks)

THE GAMES

Metro 2 gold match report
By Barry Romaro 13/6/2009
Southern River threes V’s Old Guildford
“Better Late Than Never”
Our Rocking & Rollin goalkeeper Callum was caught up in the recording studio and gave me a call to let me know he would be late, so this meant I would line up as a sweeper in defense. Old Guildford smelt blood with our goal line only being defended by a field player with no kicking fullback entitlements. But we were resolute holding them off to Callum arrived and I even had to save a shot at goals. We started the game where we left off from last week; passing the ball around with short passes and chasing down the ball carrier which was very good to see. Our first goal game from a great ball crossed deep inside the circle that John slotted away. Then our second goal came from John again when we worked the ball up the left side and John gave a great pass to myself at inside left and I was able to give him a good pass back releasing him into the circle to slot away another goal. Old Guildford were able to get a goal back about five minutes before the half time break, once again we got caught out through a turn over upfield but we panicked with our tackles rushing them and missing the ball allowing Old Guildford to score. We continued to move the ball around well right from the start of the second half and we were rewarded with a short corner. I was having a rest on the side line so the ball was hit out to Quinton who trapped the ball and drew a defender before passing it off to Dizzy on his right who neatly slotted it in for our third goal. The game continued a break neck speed and with only one minute left in the game Old Guildford scored another goal. As luck would have it they did not have enough time to equalize as we took the ball from the restart and smashed it over and well beyond their base line with the full time whistle blowing before they could restart. Final score Hawks 3 defeated Old Guildford 2
Thankyou to all our supporters once again its great to have supporters who will travel so far and give us such great encouragement. I hope all of us can attend training more often as we still need to improve our fitness.
GO HAWKS!!

Southern River Ladies 2 v Westside Wolves

Westside Wolves 4 def Southern River 0

A defeat for the ladies 2s but a huge pat on the back is well deserved by the whole team. From the outset it was going to be a difficult game as the Wolves are dominating the Metro 2 Gold division with wins all round.

The Wolves were slow to get their team together before the game and we were hoping to capitalise on short numbers but unfortunately this did not come to fruition as they managed to get a full team on quickly after the whistle. Our girls were switched on and ready to go with their sticks down ready to take off. Sadly the Wolves scored quickly in the first half but our heads did not drop and we came out fighting again ready for the next round. Jasmine from the U17s covered us in goals again this week and what a superb job she did aggressively attacking the ball and clearing it on many occasions.

The strength of the Wolves made it a defensive game and with Lou and Nic constantly under pressure on the back line there was no time for rest. Rachel, Amy and Chris held fast on the half back line and all ladies provided great defence and engineered some fantastic tackles. The forwards, Annie, Emma, and Debra found it a little quiet at times and Lenni and Joanne were back helping defend from the constantly attacking Wolves. The Wolves had us running ragged by half time and the help of Robyn and Faye slipping in to give us a breather during the half was a great help.

At half time the score was 3-0 and there needed to be a little re-evaluation in the Hawks huddle. The first half saw a lot of play over on the left side and we were struggling to move the play over to the right. Poor Debra was run off her feet last week but had the opportunity for a nap in this game! As Debra was well rested in the first half she was switched to left wing to help on the dominating side, Joanne was moved to half back (hooray, she hates inner!) and the ladies up forward were shuffled to cover the small changes.

The second half played out a lot better for the Hawks with only one goal being scored against us. Well in saying that the second half was a lot better for all of the team bar one, Chris, defending fabulously against a free hit, copped a ball clean on the chin, she even has the ball marks to prove it and if you ask her to show you her dimples I’m sure she will! Well done Chris – that’s commitment for you!

Overall a good game for the ladies and with six players on this side never picking up a stick before this season realistically a fabulous result it could have been 10 nil but our tenacity pays off week after week.
THE FUNNY SIDE
Two Kiwi businessmen in New Zealand were sitting down for a break, the new store wasn’t ready, with only a few shelves set up, one said to the other, ‘I bet any minute now some thick tourist is going to walk by, put his face to the window and ask what we’re selling.’

No sooner were the words out of his mouth when, sure enough, a curious Australian walked to the window, had a peek and in a broad Australian accent asked: ‘What are you selling?’

One of the men replied sarcastically, ‘We’re selling ass-holes’.

Without skipping a beat, the Australian said, ‘You’re doin’ really well, only two left!’

**************************************************************

Remember Myalup 2009 ?? Well here we are halfway through the season and thoughts are starting to turn to Myalup 2010 …. Just a little heads up that bookings will soon open. Numbers will be restricted to 50 people… start thinking about it !!!!

GOOD LUCK TO JOHN HEATH AS HE TRAVELS TO PENANG THIS WEEK WITH THE STATE VETS TEAM….

Southern River Ladies 2 v Canning 3

Go the Ladies 2s!! What a fabulous game for the ladies on Saturday against Canning. The whole team played well with terrific positioning, great sharing of the ball and strong play. We welcomed two new players into the club and team this week; welcome Debra and Rachel. Debra hadn’t picked up a stick for a few years and Rachel is completely new to the game however both ladies were thrust unceremoniously into the game and both held their own. On the right wing Debra’s positioning saw numerous balls hit forward to her with some fabulous crosses off her stick straight across into the circle. Rachel, as left half, defended the goal with ferocity and saved the Hawks from defeat a couple of times.
It was great to see Emma back on the forward line this week although she has missed a couple of games her tenacity paid off and she was rewarded with a goal in the first half. Amy at centre half controlled the mid section of the park with her usual skill and grace and with Chris and Nic supporting her down the left side it was difficult at times for Canning to get the ball through. Annie and Joanne played strong games helping the ball up forward and turning to defend when needed. Robyn’s patience on the left wing saw her have a few good runs up the side line but again our teams’ tenacity is our strength. Absolute commitment from Robyn going in for a tackle saw her backing away blinded by the lime of the pitch markings. An opposition players’ poor strike at the ball saw the stick break and the subsequent blinding of Robyn with the lime. Confusion seemed to reign after this incident, especially with the umpires, and all of our new players experienced a “bully” for the first time.
Our back line of Lou and Tilly held fast throughout the game. Lou has taken to chasing the player down and defending like a woman possessed and Tilly’s quick retrieval of the ball and fast turn around saw the ball sail up the line on numerous occasions feeding the forwards fabulously. A big thank you to Tilly and Jasmine who filled in for us once again, Jasmine’s efforts in goal definitely saved the Hawks from defeat. A great effort!
Our second goal, from a brilliant cross by Debra, came off a Canning stick and for those of you who were at the U11 White game on Saturday morning who witnessed some questionable umpiring would now believe in Karma. It was the umpires stick it came off!! See Phill patience is worth it!

The team came together really well this week and it paid off with our second win of the season. As mentioned the teams tenacity is one of our biggest strengths and the strong play (what hip and shoulder Chris) who pushed who in the back Deb? The ladies 2s are not shy get in there and give it there all week after week. Well done girls!

Metro 2 gold match report

Southern River threes V’s Melville

“Tough Assignment”

We new we were in for a hard game and we were prepared for it. We got away to a good start attacking well through our midfield and linking well with our inside strikers and our wingers. We had a few early chances in attack then like most weeks before we got caught out, over committing and they scored a goal through a turn over within our midfield. We did not drop our heads and fought hard to get an equalizing goal. Finally after some great endeavor by the entire side Dizzy scored a miraculous reverse side scoop from the top of the circle that managed to clear the keeper yet still land inside the goals. We went into the half time huddle one all. The second half saw us play much better hockey with lots of short passing great teamwork and the chasing down of the ball carrier, all of the things we spoke about in the half time huddle. It was not to be our day though as Melville showed their class and found the net four times in the second half and the two goals we scored in the second half were correctly disallowed.
Thankyou to all our supporters once again and to my guys who have worked on their fitness, discipline and hitting and trapping as all four have improved further again.
GO HAWKS!!

Southern River 9 vs Whitfords 0

No rain in sight and armed with a cut lunch and a water bag we all made the trek out to Whitfords all hungry for a bit of action after last week’s bye. Again the game was controlled by the centre line of Chris, Karyn and Sass with very little opportunities for Whitfords to get past the halfway and when they did they were confronted with the brick wall of Miranda and Gail and our poor goal keeper Nat has forgotten what the ball looks like, it is just as well we give her a work-out at training. The forward line was yet again in complete control. There was some great talking and passing of the ball lateral opening up both sides of the field. With some excellent switching the left side was used a bit more than in previous games which enabled some excellent running and passing between Sass, Jacinta, Tracey and Hayley. Kate was her usual hungry self beating everyone to the ball time and again and was unlucky not to have quite a few more goals than the one she got. Karyn was a dynamo in amongst everything creating plays and capitalising on some precision passes, her traps at the top of the D on shorts gave all the forwards including herself plenty of opportunity to score. Hayley was steadfast on the left post even when blind-sided by some of her own team who were hungry to score but her persistence from previous weeks and today paid off with Hayley slotting in 3 goals (yay). Tracey was unlucky not to have more than the one goal and may be a bit sore tomorrow after being man handled by players who thought hockey was a contact sport and that if you have full control of the ball you should expect to get kicked in the shins, hip and shouldered and crunched time and again it is just as well Tracey had the composure and restraint not to retaliate, as she showed them a clean set of heals weaving in and around the opposition setting up her team mates for shots on goals. Another fine example of great Hawks team play, well done ladies!!
