PIMP OR PRO

Do you recognize anyone here ??
If you don’t then you possibly missed out on the social event of the year. Yes that’s right ….. The Pimp and Pro nite last Saturday brought out the very best in all who attended. Costumes were zany, costumes were raunchy and costumes were deceiving !! Congratulatons to Lou Spear and her committee for organising such a fun event. The music was loud and the music was good. Thanks Naveen… The drinks were cold and the price was right. Thanks Brian and John… The food was hot and the food was plentiful. Thanks Nina and her band of usual helpers. The night was a raging success and the only downside was the lack of numbers. The club tries to cater for all aspects of the members needs and part of your commitment is to attempt to attend and mix socially with your fellow team mates and club members. Keep your eye out for the next Hawks Nite and keep it free or you will again miss all the fun !!

junior scene

If you havent yet been to the grounds on a Saturday morning you should try and get there just to witness the amazing numbers of kids playing our great sport. We have again been granted consolidation of grounds this year for under 11 and under 13 district matches. This means that we have 8 games of hockey plus the “hook into hockey” program running each and every Saturday morning. The tireless efforts of all involved are recognised and the club is proud of you all !!

Each week we also ask for two senior members to assist and the co operation has been fantastic and further strengthens the bond between the junior and senior sections of the Mighty Hawks.

Metro 2 gold match report

Southern River threes V’s Fremantle
“Reinforcements needed”
It all started on Thursday night when we sat down to pick the sides for the weekend, we knew we were going to struggle for numbers from the outset. After careful consideration I chose a side of nine players so that Phils Metro threes would have a full compliment of players for their away game to Kwinana. We were going to rely on Dave Vanderputt and to juniors Thomas Vince and Jay Jay Werney to play a game at Mod’s ground and then fly back to our game to make up our numbers. Brad George and John Trent kindly offered their assistance until the reinforcements arrived after already playing a game in Metro four. Unfortunately John’s stint did not last long as he received a very nasty knock across his hand and had to leave the field leaving us with only ten men. Shortly after loosing John we lost Dizzy to a crude tackle and we now only had nine players on the park. The most pleasing part of all of this was our determination to keep Fremantle out. In fact we had run plenty of counter attacks against their defense and had been awarded three short corners it was during the third corner that our reinforcements rocked up, much to our relief.
Half time came with the game still in the balance. We stepped up our assault on Fremantle in the second half, due to us making a few structural changes at half time and now we had a full side to work with for the entire half. We received a few more short corners and finally we popped a goal in via Quinton. The second half saw us make many attempts to score but the end result was one nil to us. Thankyou to all our supporters once again and to my guys who have worked on their fitness, discipline and hitting and trapping as all four have improved.
GO HAWKS!!

Metro 2 gold match report

Southern River threes V’s Moderians
“At least we did not get wet”
We started with a good side on paper and with the confidence to take on the topside on the ladder. Our warm up was good and for the first time this year we not only had a full side but we also had two reserves. The start of the game had us pressing hard into the Moderians half of the field only to be repelled with ease. Their backline was going to be our major stumbling block. The game was in the balance for about the first twenty-five minutes before the Mod’s scored a scrappy goal against the run of play. We still felt very confident about getting the goal back and went into the half time break feeling as if we could still win this game. The second half was played almost exclusively between the two twenty-five yard lines and we felt like we were going to crack the game open anytime soon, but our forwards were just being pushed of the ball all over the ground making it impossible to get into the circle. With about twenty minutes to go we turned over the ball with nobody covering in our defense, we had gone all out in attack to try and get the equalizing goal, this resulted in a two on one against Callum our keeper and their second goal for the match against play. The post match talk had us amazed that we had carried the ball so much and held so much possession yet we did not get one short corner awarded to us and did not even have one shot on goal. The final result was two nil to Moderians.
Thankyou to all our supporters once again and we will work on passing the ball on quicker in training to avoid the negative tactics of these topsides in Metro Two

Southern River 5 vs Ranges 0
Some of us were hoping for a typical wet and windy game after all hockey is supposed to be a winter sport however it was not to be and although it was slightly cooler than the previous games the Southern River Hawks still turned up red hot and ready to play which was fortunate as the Ranges team was quick out of the blocks and attacking our goals. Gail, Sass and Nat held them off and somewhat broke their spirit early on which enabled the half back line of Chris, Karyn and Jacinta to push forward giving the Hawks forwards plenty of opportunity to score. The first goal was scored off a short corner by Gail (about time, I was going to say how many shots do you need but after my efforts on the weekend I will keep quiet). There was some excellent team work and communication between the forwards who dazzled the opposition at times not with brilliance but with basic quick short passes into the D and plenty of shots being had. For a change we entered the half time break at 1 zip instead of our normal 2 zip and then we started to find the goals (well some of us). Gail scored another off a short, Karyn put in a lovely goal which didn’t for a change nearly take some ones head off and Michelle finished off some classy stick work by Chris. Jessica did a solo run from halfway and finished it off with a lovely precise shot at goals. Both Tracy and Jessica worked well in the inner positions and were always amid the build up to a shot on goals. Hayley and Paula were at their persistent best maybe the passes to us are just too perfect, yes that’s the problem we are only able to hit or trap the difficult ones….Another exceptional team effort by all the ladies well played.

A REMINDER FOR ALL TEAMS…..

PLEASE MOVE THE GOALS TO THE SIDE OF THE PLAYING FIELDS AFTER TRAINING ON THURSDAYS NITES TO ALLOW FOR GROUND MARKING AND MOWING ON FRIDAYS.. THANK YOU !!

AFTER TRAINING

A disturbing trend is developing in our club and we need to address it and sort it out. Numbers entering the rooms after training and following games has decreased remarkably this season. In the past we prided ourselves on the number of people socializing after training and matches and the place was humming. For some reason this tradition has dwindled. We all need to make a make an effort to come in for a short time and hear announcements and rub shoulders with your fellow Hawkers. We are not asking you to stay all night but you do have an obligation to the club to make an appearance. The same goes for after matches. If you are playing away or playing outside of the traditional Saturday time slots please make an effort to get back to Hawks Nest. You may be surprised what good time you will have. In an attempt to keep fees to the bare minimum we have factored in bar takings to alleviate the financial burden of all members. If we don’t make the predicted turnover in the clubrooms we will have no option but seek elsewhere to raise the necessary funds to put teams out each week. This means fees WILL need to increase to cover the shortfall. We all don’t want that so help us to help you and have a good time whilst doing it !! The bar is open every Thursday after training and every Saturday after matches…. Please make the effort. We realise that by having two turf teams this year playing times do vary but we need members of these teams to attend the rooms to keep the Hawk Family together !!!

HAWKEYE VOL4 ED 2

HAWK EYE
Southern River Hockey Club Vol.4 Ed 2

LET THE GAMES BEGIN

Well here we are already three games into the 2009 season and what a great start we have had. The opening senior weekend saw the Hawks return a fantastic result sheet in. Of the eight senior games played we won 6 drew one and suffered defeat in one. The club was proud of all the efforts first up. Made even the more meritorious when noted that with the great influx of new players this year, a lot of players had not played together before and in some case some had not played before ever!!
The second weekend saw a return to reality and it must be stated that we have nominated higher grades this year to progress our development and the battles have become a little harder. Our success as a club is not only measured by on field performances, but also by a genuine desire to improve and provide our players with the very best opportunity to play against the best teams. By doing this we all improve and learn from each week. Success on the field will come as our entire playing list is well prepared and well coached.

Our junior teams commenced last weekend and a special welcome to all the new players to the club and also great to see so many familiar faces return this year. Special mention to the many junior parents who are making themselves available each week to assist in the day to day tasks so necessary in the running of a club. Good to see a lot of them stay back and socialize with the senior members of the club. As we grow it is important that we remain the tight “family” unit that we have become renowned for.
Good luck to all teams for this weekend.

TRAINING

THURSDAY TRAINING FINISHES AT 8-00PM AND ALL
PLAYERS ARE TO BE IN THE CLUB ROOMS BY 8-15 TO HEAR ANY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS AND TEAM SELECTIONS. THIS IS A REQUIREMENT AND YOU ARE NEEDED INSIDE TO BE A PART OF WHAT IS HAPPENING AT YOUR CLUB !! WE HAVE RE INTRODUCED THE WHEEL AGAIN THIS YEAR AND IF YOU BUY A DRINK WHEN YOU COME IN AFTER TRAINING YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO WIN ONE FREE WHILST WE ARE WAITING FOR TEAM ANNOUNCEMENTS.

GOALS
Can ALL coaches be aware that the goals near the clubrooms are to be removed to the side of the playing fields after Thursday training as this assists the lawn mowing and line marking that is done prior to the Saturday games. Your co operation is appreciated !! You also will have noticed that we have signs in the goal mouths on ground 1 asking for players to refrain from warming up in the goal circles. We are doing this to ease the pressure on these areas as we have a long season ahead and it is important that we maintain a high standard of playing surfaces for you to play on !! Again thank you for your co operation.

THE LADIES

Ladies 1s 18/04/09
Coach: Fred Keane
Captain: Gail Cracknell
Southern River 10 vs Harlequins 0
A new season a new team the unknown competitors just how will we go in our first game??? FABULOUSLY !! Southern River ladies were all over the opposition from the very first hit out. Defenders Gail, Miranda and Goal Keeper Nat rarely got a touch. Gail put thru some bullet hits and with Tracey not in her usual or preferred position of centre half controlling the mid field magnificently with full support from Chris and Sass the three of them let very little past and were the crux to our forward attack and attack we did. With Kate, Ang, Jacinta, Hayley, Paula and sub Jessica getting heaps of possessions it was only a matter of time before the first goal was on the scoreboard. After peppering the goals for what seemed an eternity the first goal eventually came about 20minutes in from a short corner shot from Ang. Ang seemed to have goal fever and shortly after she had scored her 2nd goal. Heading into the half time break the score was only 2 zip, we all knew goals would come if we continued playing with the same intensity. The next goal was a bit arsey although it involved some excellent running and ball control from Tracey who received the pass back from Ang to start the second half and then Tracey weaved her magic running all the way to the top of the d to pass the ball to a waiting Ang who hit the ball only to have the Harlys defender nearly trap it a metre out and have the ball only just roll over the goal line near the left post to give Southern River our third goal only moments into the start of the second half. After that the flood gates opened Ang put in another 2 (1 which was a lovely hit above the keepers head) Kate put in 2more, Paula finally got hold of one and Hayley was eventually rewarded with her persistence. A great game by all players, keep it up girls.

WOMENS’S WORLD
For the first year ever, women went to the Myalup pre-season training camp and what a success it was. Everyone blended in well and a good time was had by all.
Then it was the Capel weekend, when the Hawks take on the Capel Hockey Club in a pre-season warm up scratch match. Another first as the girls also joined in with this, not having been down there before. I was asked to run the side on the day, and was impressed by their skills, and was also reminded (many times) about the first aid I received when I was pushed down the stairs at Myalup!! This being the case, I agreed to coach the ladies until a regular coach was found. A week later I was hooked and decided to do the job full time. Another first was a training session as the Hockey Stadium which was enjoyed by all concerned. Then it was Club Day when all teams played. What a great carnival atmosphere there. The 1’s played the 2’s first, then the 2 womens’ teams played each other in a cracking game, followed by the 3’s and 4’s. This was followed by a BBQ and a few cordials.
Two weeks later the season started with both teams playing at home. The 2’s drew 1-1 against Willetton and the 1’s beat Harlies 10-0, with Ange pretty sharp up front scoring 5 goals. Next week both teams travelled to Mods ground. The 1’s won 6-0, whilst the 2’s were pipped in the last minute to go down 2-1. Things are looking good with plenty of improvements, and I am sure more to come. The girls would like to wish Karen and Tracey swift recoveries, and Ange all the best with her foot operation.
That’s it for now. Will keep the reports flowing in the coming weeks
Fred.

Southern River 6 vs Mods 0
Southern River Ladies 1s had a great game against Mods with the centre field under complete control by Chris who had an exceptional game and was an integral part of both defence and attack. The score line could have been completely blown out if the shots on goals by all players were converted. Jessica and Sass had a great game and put thru some lovely passes. Kate and Paula worked well together on the right to bring the ball into the D and with Hayley getting free from defenders on the left wing and having numerous opportunities to score it was only a matter of time before we were on the board. The goal scoring started with Gail slamming in her first short corner for the season. The second goal was also scored from a short corner with Paula hitting in a wayward ball from Gail although some may say it was a brilliant pass….yeh right who passes inside the D!! Half time was upon us and the score was 2 zip similar to last week which I am sure we all kept in the back of our mind heading into the second half. Ang was still on the field after being belted by the ball a couple of times I think it being her last game for the season before a foot operation was her drive to stay there. Hayley scored and then Chris scored and then Hayley scored again and finally Ang finished off what can only be described as a superb forward attack as the ball travelled from defence from hawk to hawk all the way into the forward line to be passed into the D as if in a training drill without touching a single opposition player for Ang to hammer straight into the goals. Another great game played by all players rest up over the bye and under no circumstances are there to be any injuries!!
Best: Chris 3, Kate 2, Paula 1
Goal Scorers: Hayley 2, Ang, Gail, Chris and Paula 1 each

Metro 2 gold match report

Southern River threes V’s North Coast Raiders
“A Great Start”
Well we found our selves in a different grade with a few new faces but that team spirit that has made us the side that we are was well and truly still there. We started with a bang pushing an equally strong side as hard as we could. Raiders used their physical strength to their advantage on a number of occasions but we quickly adapted to this faster pace of hockey required to play Metro Two.
We scored our first goal through a short corner scramble and our confidence then increased.
Our goal only seemed to awaken the sleeping giant as the raiders stepped up a gear and scored two goals inside five minutes. We were evenly matched but we seemed to find the gaps in attack but we narrowly missed three goals that could have easily gone in. finally after a very good patch of passing we slotted in our second goal and the first half finished at two all.
We made a few tactical changes for the second half one of those was for Ian to tag the Raiders left inner out of the game as he was ripping us apart in the first half. Ian did a sensational job and the inner did not trouble us in the second half.
We attacked their defense for the entire second half and missed getting a penalty flick and another four or five shots on goal were narrowly saved or missed. Finally we knocked in another goal
With five minute to go and hung on from there to claim our first scalp in the Metro Two grade.
Last but not least thanks very much to the spectators who traveled a vast distance and gave us great encouragement from the sidelines.

Southern River threes V’s Victoria Park Pirates
“The reality check”
After a good start to the season with our win against North Coast Raiders we had a reality check. Today we suffered the biggest loss that I have endured as a Hawk, the skill and the shear running ability of Vic Park had us caught out right from the start and we were flat as tacks and two goals down within five minutes. Our pre game warm up was a mess due to four of us turning up late from umpiring commitments and we never really got going.
The eight to one defeat will burn inside us for many weeks to come and I hope we will use this bitter taste of defeat as a weapon of destruction against the teams we play in the coming weeks.
Thanks very much to the spectators who gave us great encouragement from the sidelines even though this was not our best display of hockey. Thankyou to John Heath for umpiring at short notice due to one umpire not showing up. We will be back and with the spirit this team has we can’t wait to play Vic Park in round two. Go Hawks!!

THE “ZIMMER FRAMERS”

Following our good start to the season last week against Hale 3 nil we played Subs at their patch and unfortunately could not repeat our first game effort.
Going into the game with one player short was always going to be a challenge. Our regular goalie Steve Airey could not play but thanks to Tony Ewing we were able to have a goal keeper.
The first half was a hard slog with Subs scoring 2 goals despite some resolute defence from Len Davies, Mick Spear and Tony in goals.
We started the 2nd half with more of a sense of purpose with Dave Frost scoring a goal from a well earned short corner. Unfortunately soon after Subs rebounded with their 3rd goal. Not to be outdone we persevered and following a scrimmage in the attacking circle Jeff Anderson found a small opening on the left and put away our 2nd goal. Phil Hewton maintained his tireless work in midfield.
It would have been nice to come away with a draw and a point but time ran out.
The team is playing with plenty of spirit and could do with 2 more players to help some weary legs.
Goal scores – Frosty and Jeff
Best Players – Phil Hewton; Frosty and Len

SOUTHERN RIVER V WILLETON 2/5/09

With a full compliment of 11 players we took the field hoping to make a contest and give Willeton a run for their money. Unfortunately this was not to be.
The first half saw Willeton slot away 3 goals and could have scored more had it not been the post being hit on 3 occasions and some good defense from Len and our new found goalie Tony.
Whilst not blaming the heavy and spongy ground the 2nd half realized more of the same with Willeton putting away another 3 goals. Although we fought hard we managed to score one goal for the game with hard working Phil finding the net. Phil and Frosty worked hard and could do with bit more support in the forward line.
A disappointing game and one we would like to forget in a hurry. We will need to lift our game if we are to beat Melville at home next week and go into the following week with a bit of confidence when we play Dale.
Goal scorer – Phil Hewton
Best Players – Phil Hewton, Len and Frosty
