HAWKS TO SOAR IN 2009
The Southern River Hockey Club is set to soar in the 2009 Hockey season following an unprecedented success at its recent registration day. In an outstanding indication of the sport’s popularity over 100 members attended the day to sign on for the upcoming season. This huge response included juniors, senior men and senior women and has forced the club to re think its strategy on the number of teams it will nominate with HockeyWA. With plans for a second Men’s turf side already decided it now appears the club will have a second Ladies side as well as fielding teams in ALL junior grades. This will include an Under 17 side for the first time in the clubs history. With an outstanding number of new registrations the club appears set to have multiple Under 11’s as well as representation in Under 13 and Under 15 competitions. A Hook in 2 Hockey program for 5-10 year olds will also be conducted at the club and registrations for these sessions are also at an unprecedented level. The club is continuing Registrations for all grades at its Senior Training sessions so it is not too late for further new players to join the Hawks for 2009.
Senior Training is well and truly under way each Thursday night at 6-30pm and Sunday mornings at 9-00am. Record numbers are in attendance at all sessions and the club is excited about the huge influx of new players both men and women. These numbers also include people who are new to the sport. With skills coaches on hand to guide the newcomers, the club has identified the need to cater for all level of playing ability. The sessions are held at the club’s headquarters at the Les Sands Pavilion in Gay St Gosnells and are conducted under the guidance of John Heath and Club Coach Leighton Keane. With the annual pre season trial matches at Busselton to be held on the weekend of 15 March rapidly approaching, it is imperative that players wishing to impress the coaching panel attend these training sessions. A series of scratch matches will be played on the Busselton Astro turf and will include Senior Ladies for the first time this year. With the record breaking numbers already attending training the club is keen to asses its playing roster with a view to continuing the outstanding success achieved on the field in 2008.
Junior training will commence on Thursday 26th March at the clubrooms in Gay St commencing at 5-00pm and will include some training sessions on the artificial surfaces at HockeyWA headquarters in Bentley for the Under 15 and Under 17 players. Coaches are due to be announced in the very near future.

KEANE APPOINTED COACH
The Southern River Hockey Club has great pleasure in announcing the club’s senior men’s coach for 2009 is Leighton Keane. Leighton takes on the exciting role in a concerted effort by the Hawks to continue the remarkable on field success achieved by the fledgling club in its short 3 year history. Keane has extensive experience in hockey coaching having been heavily involved in WA State teams for a number of years as well as assistant coaching roles in Classic League clubs associated with HockeyWA. His vast knowledge of the new game including modern day techniques and an understanding of the importance of being a hockey tactician will be pivotal to the Hawks in the upcoming season.
The clubs annual pre season training camp conducted at Myalup Beach in the southwest proved to be an outstanding success. Over 40 players attended and slogged it out in the soft sand in a range of exercises designed to clear the cob webs during the off season. The road run was completed in good time and was won by Lee Hansord, whilst the first woman over the line was Jacinta Inman.
The club has now commenced senior training at Sutherlands Park in Gay st Gosnells on Thursday 6-30pm and Sunday 9-00am. The pre season programme will be co ordinated by John Heath, Janson Hoskins and Leighton Keane. All players are invited to attend and is also an opportunity for any prospective new members to join the club. The Hawks will travel to Busselton in early March to participate in a series of pre season trial games against Capel. Pre season training is a requirement for players wishing to be selected and will provide the senior coaching panel an opportunity to assess new players.
The Hawks will conduct a Registration Day for senior and junior members at the club in Gay St Gosnells on Saturday 21st February commencing at 11-00am. A sausage sizzle will be operational as well as all club coaches will be on hand to meet any new members.
