FINALS FIXTURING
We have been fortunate enough to be awarded a series of final’s matches at our home ground this Saturday and this is further testimony that HOCKEYWA is taking the HAWKS seriously. We have 6 matches at home this weekend including the 2nd semi final for our Twos side at 1-30pm. If you are not involved in finals we would love to have your assistance at the HAWKS NEST to help and to support our 2’s. If you are supporting or playing in our other teams at various venues around Perth please make your way back to the ground to celebrate/commiserate your result. The bar and kitchen will be open from 1-30pm on Saturday and we would love to have your presence !!
JUNIOR WINDUP
By all accounts a fantastic windup was had by all that attended. I have it on good authority that ALL junior players were present at some stage during proceedings and that is significant in the development of the junior contingent of our club. Well done to all players and coaches for a fantastic season and the successful trophy winners will be published in the next edition. Well done to John and Cindy Heath, Michelle and Guy Hoskin, Fred Keane, Chris(Ports)Baker, Dave Vanderputt, Gail Cracknell, Brian and Jean Coppendale and Lloyd Jones for their efforts on the day. I apologise if I have missed anybody but you know who you are and your tireless contribution is appreciated!

“Top of the Ladder”
Finally we got a chance to play Fremantle again after losing the cup match to them, we were missing as many of our first team line up today as we were on the cup match day but after only a few minutes I could see we were switched on . The game was really about teamwork
And before the game Rex reminded us of how much fun we were having at the start of the year and if we could find the fun again, that it would not matter win, loose or draw. Two fine goals to dizzy today put Fremantle on the back foot and the incredible save’s from Calum ensured that freo would suffer another defeat at the hands of Southern River. Thankyou to Navine for umpiring and all the support from spectators on the sideline. Next week we take on Curtin trinity pirates at their home ground, we have achieved our first team goal by finishing on top of the ladder and if we can win or draw this weekend we will have had an undefeated regular season. Well done The Mighty Two’s.

1’s V’s Wolves 23/8/09
Game started at a slow tempo with Wolves having much of the possession in the 1st 10 minutes. It wasn’t long before Wolves were 1 goal up which seemed to stir us into action.
With more possession midfield, we found ourselves in the Wolves circle on a number of occasions. Paul Bailey scored from a crowded circle to level the score & not long after Guy Hoskins put us one up with a good reflex shot from a bouncing ball in the circle. Special mention to Connor Cracknell playing at left half to give Dean a spell. Connor was nervous playing at left half but marked his man tightly with some good support & advice from Kevin & Leighton in deep defence.
The 2nd half saw us get a number of shorts but unfortunately we couldn’t convert. Wolves equalized with a powerful short corner conversion with about 5 minutes to go. We managed to withstand a mountain of pressure at the end of the game to hang on for a 2 all draw.
At least a draw is required for the last qualifying round to ensure we retain 2nd spot on the ladder & a double chance in the final
Thanks to Troy Cornish for umpiring

Vets
Prelude to the finals. Southern River 3 V Rockingham 0.
With one week to go and the finals around the corner the Vets took on Rockingham at home in the last qualifying game of the season. We have a bye next week. The team is sitting on top of the ladder with a five point lead so a draw or a win would guarantee a spot on top of the table.
We started without our regular centre half Barry Vanderputt and full back Len Davies (both rested for the finals) and also forwards Phil Hewton and Mike Nicholas (business commitments).
The first half presented many opportunities to be at least 4 or 5 goals in front due to some good mid field play by centre half Colin Stewart and our two half backs Jeff Anderson and Steve Airey. It was not until the last 15 minutes of the first half that we saw some good work from John Heath and Dixey who found sharp shooter Trenty. Trenty found his range and did not let his fellow forwards down scoring two timely goals.
The second half continued with many an opportunity going begging and it wasn’t until John Heath refused to give up trying that we saw our third goal.
Although Rocky threatened to score, Dave Vanderputt, John Zimdahl and Frosty made sure the score card remained nil.
With next week free, courtesy of a timely bye we are looking at taking advantage of the break and going into our first final against Wolves fully rested and well prepared.

“UNBEATEN”
The last game of the regular season saw us still unable to put our full line up on the park, it has now been ten games in succession that we have fielded a fill in side. We hope in earnest with the finals next week that we can finally put our full strength side on the pitch. Thanks to Paul Dixie for playing for us today and he played extremely well I doubt the vets will get him back next year. Once again we played with flair and the result was a very enjoyable game. Today we passed the ball around both with short passes and long passes making us unpredictable. Although we did not score any goals in the first fifteen minutes we pressured the Pirates defense and had four or five shots on goal to no avail.
We scored two goals in each half of the game and maintained control for most of the match, but we did turn the ball over a few times when we should not have. All in all we managed to get through the game with no major injuries which is a good thing going into the finals. I must make mention of Clive finally putting away his once a year goal, it took a couple of swings to clear the area before slotting it in but that is something we have got use to well done Clive you can put your stick into mothballs now.
Thanks very much to Kevin Pethick for umpiring our game today.

Hawks 5 Fremantle 0 (Fremantle Forfeited)
What a ball burster of a game, it all started with Tash our goalkeeper throwing her helmet to the ground and taking a solo run weaving in and out of not only the opposition but her own players a total display of ball hogging but it paid off with her taking the ball right into the D and flicking it into the top left hand corner of the goals not only were Fremantle stunned but so were we and it was as if the flood gates were opened the goals then came in a flurry first from a belter of a ball from Gail straight down the right wing which Paula struggled to catch but Lou was onto it flying past Paula as if she was standing still catching the ball and smashing it at the goals from the sideline only to pick up the rebound off the keeper and hammer the ball back past the goalies head for our second goal. Not to be outdone Jo and Karyn teamed up to take the ball straight down the guts around Ang and into the D for Jo to smack the ball that hard that it went straight through the back board of the goals. The forwards were not happy by this time and as if to make matters worse the one person we did not expect to run let alone run with the ball now had it in her possession but no it couldn’t be possible surely she would pass or break down exhausted by the time she reached the halfway line and to our horror she didn’t Gail ran all the way from the back line to the attacking goal line dummying one way and then the next and just as we were expecting the ball to be caned into the goals she miss hit it topping the ball and we all watched on as the ball bobbled and rolled and stopped on the goal line but fortunately the goalie had lost sight of the ball and stepped back knocking it over the line and our fourth goal was scored. Who was going to score next we did not know if only one of the forwards could get a touch if it wasn’t the Fremantle defence stopping them it was there own defence preventing them from getting the ball. Finally Miranda passed the ball to Tanase who combined with Jacinta and Hayley who then passed the ball to Candice who combined with Collette bringing the ball into the forward 25 passing the ball to Ang who weaved in and out running lateral as well as around and around and around of course she could none of the forwards were puffed this was their first touch. Alanah was screaming for a pass she was at the top of the D and ready to hammer anything within reach and there it was the pass came from Ang a lovely flat square pass and Alanah swung and missed (oh bother I think she said) but it was okay Miranda was there and she didn’t miss smash no-one saw it coming not even the goalie and we had our fifth and last goal. What an excellent virtual game lets hope the forwards get more of a touch in the 1st final against South Perth next week.
CHECK THIS OUT !!!
The Olympic Games have made a huge impression in the Parkes household.
Young Declan (6 years old) when discussing the Olympics said to his Dad, “I don’t have to wait 1432 days until the next Olympics as the “Paralytic Olympics” are on in two weeks.” When asked what the “Paralytic Olympics” were he innocently said “well that’s where all the old people race!”
Oh to explain that to a Paralympian!
Cheers Phill
