Vets Win Premiership

September 25th, 2008 by Janson Hoskins

The Hawks Vets side travelled to Stevens Reserve in Fremantle last Saturday to take on Westside Wolves in the 2008 Grand Final. As the team began to assemble in fine clear conditions, it was obvious that these players were here to take home the Premiership. The ground condition was perfect and all was set for an epic battle. These two sides had been the best two teams in the competition so it was only fitting that they met in the final game of the year. We were even priveleged to have two WAHA umpires so all was in readiness for the match.
Wolves started the match at a frenetic pace and the Hawks back line was under immense pressure. The brilliance of goal keeper Dave Vanderputt was evident as he continually thwarted the opposition attacks and with Len Davies and Dave Frost cleaning up in the last line of defence the Hawks held the Wolves forwards at bay. As the match wore on it was apparent that nerves were playing a part of the Hawks midfield as several errant passes caused the forward thrusts to break down and put the pressure back on to our defence. As half time approached, a shift in the momentum began to become clear as half backs Barry Vanderputt, Colin Stewart, Jeff Anderson and Steve Airey began to take control. Some powerful running from forwards Paul Dixie, Phil Hewton and Rat allowed the free wheeling John Heath, John Trent and Mike Nicholas to start to build pressure on the Wolves defence. As half time approached, Hawks mounted an impressive attack that began in the midfield and after a series of passes as they approached the goal, a powerful cross from the right saw Mike Nicholas in the perfect position to beat the Wolves goal keeper and with jubilation slotted the much needed goal. The whistle sounded for half time immediately.

The second half was an intense battle as the Hawks were determined not to rest on their laurels and controlled much of the play in search of a second goal. Several near misses from John Trent and John Heath continually kept Wolves under pressure. Captain Lloyd Jones, on the comeback trail all year following serious injury, took to the field and his experience and guile was evident as he assisted in many midfield build ups. The game ebbed and flowed with the Hawks defence repelling the Wolves desperate attempts to score the equalizer. As the countdown began it was clear that the Hawks Vets team had withstood all challenges and were about to become champions. As the final whistle sounded scenes of jubilation followed and all players were ecstatic with the result. A great effort from a band of warriors who had set the pace all year and deserved the taste of glory. Special mention to Trevor Dayman for umpiring during the season.

Hawks Are Premiers

September 23rd, 2008 by Janson Hoskins

HAWKS ARE PREMIERS

The Southern River Hockey Club capped a remarkable season last weekend by winning two Premierships! The Hawks won Grand Finals in both Metro White and Vets O/40 grades and narrowly lost in four other Grand Finals. In an amazing season the Hawks showed that hockey in the local area is in a strong and healthy state with a total of six teams finishing the regular home and away season in the top two in their competitions. This is a feat in itself as the club has a total of 10 teams including five senior mens teams, one senior ladies team and four junior teams. The twin Premierships are the result of an outstanding recruiting drive at the beginning of the season and is the culmination of the commitment and dedication of the clubs playing roster. In the Hawks short three years of existence, they can boast a total of four Premierships, a membership in the vicinity of 150 players and in 2007 won HockeyWA’s highest accolade by securing the Byrne and Judge Trophy awarded to the most successful club per capita head.
The resurgence of hockey in the Southern River district has been illustrated by the clubs success and demonstrates that the future of the club looks bright for many years ahead.

The first of the Premierships on Saturday was won by the Hawks 2nd side captained by the evergreen Barry Romaro. This side has competed in all three Grand Finals since the clubs inception and has now been successful twice and lost the third narrowly last year in “golden goal” time. The side went through the regular season undefeated and finished on top of their division and were awarded the Guth Ardagh pennant for being minor Premiers. The side started the season with only half the players from the previous season in their line up and with the injection of new blood and youth carried all before them.

The Vets Premiership came about following an incredibly consistent season where they also finished on top of their division. This side is captained by Lloyd Jones and also fielded a somewhat different team in 2008 due to number of retirements and injury. An influx of new players saw them complete the home and away season with only 1 loss and the experience told in the Grand Final as they held on to win 1-0.

The Hawks other Grand Finalists included the first Junior team to compete in finals as the U/13 side finished top two but narrowly lost the flag in the final battle of the year. The Mens Top side also put up a brave fight in the Grand Final but unfortunately couldn’t secure victory. Coach Barry Vanderputt was extremely proud of his group’s achievements this season and was particularly proud of the young players and is confident that the Hawks will be a force for many years to come. The Ladies Top side were gallant in defeat and coach Alahna Ansett warned the competition that her group will come back better and stronger after the bitter taste of defeat last Saturday. It should be noted that this team won last years flag and also won the mid season Challenge Cup. The Mens 3rd side under the guidance of Phil Parkes also stumbled at the final hurdle but again showed the grit and determination that carried them to second spot on the ladder this year. The team was made up of a blend of youth and experience and displayed a brand of hockey that will carry them through the future with optimism.

The future of hockey is secure in this region and the success on the field this year has further enhanced the decision to bring hockey back into the area. The support of the Gosnells City Council has been amazing and the Hawks are assured of further support in the coming years.

Twos Are Premiers

September 22nd, 2008 by Janson Hoskins

“The 2008 Premiers”

Metro 3 white match report
By Barry Romaro 20/9/2008
Southern River twos V’s Fremantle
What can you say about getting into a grand final and winning it? You little ripper is what comes to mind. We have had a fairy tale year despite starting the season off with only five of the twos from 2007 we have been a “team” from the outset of the season. In an unlikely scenario we jelled as a side from game one and went through the entire regular season without losing a game. The reason we have had such an exceptional season was due largely to the way in which the team members of the twos conducted themselves. The sportsmanship was unequalled by any other team in my opinion. All team members turned up on time, a minimum of thirty minutes before each game as required and it gave us the edge over our opponents all year. In today’s game we went out hard and dominated for the entire first half with Troy Cornish scoring our first goal through a short corner just before half time. We spoke about keeping up the same intensity in the second half but unfortunately Fremantle scored a goal against the run of play through a short corner within the first three minutes. We did not handle this result very well and panic crept into our game but we still created many chances to score goals. The full time whistle came with both teams locked on a goal apiece. Now it was time for golden goal extra time. Suddenly we found the confidence that we started the game with and the way in which we passed the ball around cut the Fremantle defense up. We were awarded three short corners in the space of three minutes and it was during the third one that we got a direct shot on goals. With the ball bouncing off the keepers pads the quick thinking John Gradisen pounced onto it and slotted away the most exciting goal of the season. We had finally won the grand final players ran from all parts of the field and piled onto the goal scorer with delight. Well done “Twos “ all of the Southern River Hockey Club are proud of your win
“Go The Mighty hawks”
Thanks very much to Dean Savage-Morton for umpiring our game again, our club is blessed with some fantastic people who are prepared to put their hand up time and time again for extra duties and Dean you are one of them thankyou very much. A big thankyou also to Troy, Boyd and Glen for stepping up from the “fours” to cover for the injured players and you all played a big part in our win. And I would also like to thank our wonderful sideline support once again we had fantastic support and I think they will agree that we put on a most fantastic show both during the game and with our post game antics. I would also like to thank Troy and Natasha Cornish from Metro Tax Returns for providing premiership medallions in which we all very much appreciate.

THE GAMES
THE TWO’S- Barry Romaro
Southern River twos V’s Kwinana
“Two’s Make It Three”
After a very successful year we have finally made our goal and that is to play off for the flag. I commend our team for the spirit in which they have played throughout the entire year. This is the third year in a row that we have made it to the grand final match and it was no easy feat. Kwinana played extremely well today, although we had the run of play for most of the day they counter attacked us on many occasions but our defense was water tight today. Our lone goal was a beauty Connor latched onto a weak clearance by Kwinana just outside the Dee and stepped in and blasted the ball waist height past their goalkeeper for a very memorable goal. The game was filled with great passes excellent traps and very positive talking which kept us above our opponents even when scores were level. Although the goals did not come for us in this game we had our chances but just did not put them away. We must have been saving ourselves for next week…bring on Fremantle.
“Go The Mighty hawks”
Thanks very much to Dean Savage-Morton for umpiring our game today. And I would also like to thank our wonderful sideline support we had today it was quite remarkable that with so many sides playing all over the place that we could have such a strong supporter base and boy they made some noise.

THE WOMEN- Paula Westell
Hawks 5 vs Kwinana 4

Both Hawks and Kwinana wanted to win and this was evident by the amount of play in both forward lines. The backs for both teams were under immense forward pressure but the Hawks stood strong and then Karyn scored the first goal in the first few minutes of the game. Not that the Hawks rested but with one goal under our belt we did take the foot off the gas a bit and that was our big mistake as Kwinana counter attacked and scored an equaliser and then to our despair they scored another giving them a 2-1 lead. The hawks were not without there attempts at scoring with all of the forwards having opportunities to equalise and then Ang scored but Kwinana scored again with 9 minutes of the game to go. At this point most teams would have dropped theirs heads and called it a day but the Hawks did not and this was great to see, we were spurred on to equalise with all players holding there positions and creating excellent plays. Then it was Ang to our rescue again scoring the 3rd and equalising goal going into full time. With sudden death now upon us our intensity multiplied and we had a hand full of chances to score with myself missing an absolute sitter in the dying minutes of extra time and then Alanah received a yellow card from quick draw for saying something along the lines of ‘Oh I don’t quite think that call was correct’ and we headed into penalty flicks debating whether Alanah could take a flick and whether the opposition goalie could swap. In the end the goalie swapped and Alanah lined up to take the first flick for the Hawks. Alanah scored, Paula put it straight into the goalie, Karyn scored, Ang scored but was then disallowed and Miranda hit the post. Fortunately for us Tash our goalie was impenetrable with Kwinana only able to get one goal past her leaving the final score at 5 – 4 and seeing the Hawks Ladies join our other teams playing off in the finals next week. Look out South Perth we are hungry!!

This is the final edition of the Hawkeye for season 2008. I would like to thank a few people for their contributions this season and without their input this publication could not happen:

Barry Romaro- His consistent and graphic match reports were always in my inbox by Sunday morning. His article on the “Corona Cup” was the highlight for me as it portrayed the spirit of this great club.

Paula Westell- Her consistent reports on both the Ladies and u/11 matches made for interesting reading and kept all members up to date with their progress.

Jean Coppendale, Cindy Heath and Paula Westell – Assisting in printing for me when my resources became stretched.

Barry Vanderputt, Phil Parkes and Troy Cornish- Your articles on your team’s matches were both informative and interesting.

U/13’s INTO GRAND FINAL

YES THAT’S RIGHT, OUR ALL CONQUERING U/13’S HAVE PROGRESSED STRAIGHT THROUGHT TO THE GRAND FINAL WITH A GUTSY WIN OVER HIGHLY FANCIED RIVALS MAZENOD IN THE SEMI FINAL LAST STAURDAY. IN A FIRST FOR THE HAWKS WE HAVE A JUNIOR TEAM PLAYING OFF FOR THAT ELUSIVE PREMIERSHIP. THIS TEAM UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF COACH JOHN HEATH HAVE HAD A REMARKABLE SEASON AND HAVE PROVED TO BE A POWERFUL COMBINATION ALL YEAR. WELL DONE TEAM AND GOOD LUCK IN YOUR QUEST FOR GLORY !!

OUCH !!

THE HAWKS BLED A LITTLE LAST SATURDAY WITH ALL SENIOR FINALISTS UNFORTUNATELY BEING DEFEATED. ALL TEAMS GAVE A GREAT EFFORT AND WITH A LITTLE LUCK COULD HAVE BEEN HAVING A REST THIS WEEK TO PREPARE FOR THE GRAND FINAL. INSTEAD THEY ALL BUTTER UP AGAIN THIS WEEK IN AN ATTEMPT TO PROGRESS THROUGH TO THEIR RESPECTIVE GRAND FINALS. NO MATTER HOW THE RESULTS GO THIS WEEK, THE SOUTHERN RIVER HOCKEY CLUB IS VERY PROUD OF THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THESE TEAMS THIS SEASON. THE FACT THAT ALL FINALIST TEAMS FINISHED IN THE TOP TWO POSITIONS IN THEIR GRADE NOT ONLY GAVE THEM THE DOUBLE CHANCE BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY DISPLAYED THE CONSISTENTLY HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY ALL SEASON. OF COURSE ALL PLAYERS PLAY THE GAME TO TASTE SUCCESS AND A PREMIERSHIP IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL AND THE CLUB WISH YOU ALL WELL THIS WEEK AS YOU GO INTO BATTLE. GO HAWKS !!!

HAWKS NEST-ALFRESCO STYLE

The club was fortunate enough to be granted a series of finals matches at our grounds last Saturday. Not only did we have the luxury of our Twos at home for their semi final but we also played host to 11 other teams for the afternoon. This gave us the opportunity to showcase our magnificent facilities and entertain our “ guests” in style. On a balmy Saturday afternoon with the sun in all its glory, the alfresco garden was set up to allow spectators to view the matches in style. We had umbrellas and ‘beer garden’ style table set up. We had music and friendly atmosphere and of course the bar and kitchen were fully operational and by all accounts did a roaring trade all day !! Other teams marvelled at our efforts and most stayed on after their games to soak up the atmosphere as well as a drink or three. We received positive comments all day and Im sure all visitors left with a lasting impression of how well we entertained. A good advertisement for the professionalism and organisation of the Hawks !!

THE LADIES- Paula Westell
Hawks 0 South Perth 1

What is it with losses at the moment, definitely not the right end of the season to start having them however it was not because we played bad, we played an excellent team game. Karyn, Jo and Miranda controlled the half back line as usual and Gail, Lou and Tash controlled the back line. Unfortunately although Alanah, Ang, Hayley, Tanase, Jacinta, Jess and myself controlled the forward line and didn’t give an inch it just was not our day to score. Ang was denied a lovely head high goal and Hayley had the ball all ready to go in the goals when a slight back spin caught her off guard and the ball rolled back onto her foot. We must have had about 20 or more short corners but in fairness to us the South Perth goalie (Liz) played an excellent game and deflected all attempts at scoring and then in the dying minutes of the second half South Perth managed to break away (2nd time all day) and this time they scored. Now it is do or die against Kwinana and as long as we play the same team game but convert our chances we will see ourselves in the grand final. Lets go get them girls!!
