Hawks Still Hold Second Spot

August 26th, 2008 by Jonathon Lanzon

Hawks Strong in Defence

This week the Southern River Provisional 2 Men’s team took on unpredictable Westside Wolves. This was the third encounter between the two teams this season. The first game went the Wolves way, the second shot saw the Hawks win. It will be a hard fought game from both teams.

The Hawks side has had major shake ups with players out from injury and other commitments. However this week we saw most players returning with the DeWind boys the only players still unavailable, Rob from his season ending knee injury. With the team back to almost full strength the Hawks were confident they could walk away with the three points and guaranteed second position.

The Wolves had a win in their eyes as well, when the start of the game whistle blew the Wolves attacked with all their strength. The Hawks could do nothing but defend the continued onslaught. After 10 minutes of continued possession the Wolves took advantage of a loose ball behind the keeper to put themselves in the lead.

Being a goal down seemed to kick the Hawks into gear because as soon as the game restarted the game dramatically changed direction. The Hawks took control of the game, the Wolves were totally thrown off the change in tempo. After some quality hockey the Hawks found themselves level after a perfect strike from Paul Bailie from the top of the circle.

Back on even terms the Hawks wanted more. The Wolves who seemed to have tired themselves from the early attacks could do nothing but hold back the Hawks attack. The next goal for the Hawks came from a short corner. After a standard strike from Lee Hansord was blocked by the goal keeper Guy Hoskin pounced on the deflected ball putting it high into the net.

The Hawks were finally in the lead and just in time before the first half ended. The second half started similar to the way the second half ended. The Hawks kept up the pressure through domination in the midfield. Unfortunately the Hawks’ luck ran out and no matter how many shots were taken they were unable to penetrate the goals. The Wolves on the other hand had luck on their side, especially after a mishit from a short corner near the end of the game found the back of the net putting the teams back to square one.

The game finishing… a draw, 2-2. The Hawks took away a valuable point, although a win would have been better. The Hawks now sit in second position three points ahead of third placed Melville. A win or draw next week will guarantee them a second position finish.

Next week the Hawks will be taking on fifth placed Riverside Lions. A win, although not guaranteed, should be a likely result.

Goal Scorers: Paul Bailie, Guy Hoskin
Best on Ground: Lee Hansord, Steve Martino, James Gradison

Southern River Hockey Club Vol.3 Ed 15

THE CHRIS (PORTS) BAKER EDITION

BROOKLANDS CORONA CHALLENGE DERBY 2

The much anticipated clash of the titans was upon us again, never in such a short time has a rivalry of such magnitude been created. To give you just a little bit of insight into the history of these two famous Southern River sides imagine doing the pre season together knowing that some will make the two’s and some the thirds, then the unexpected happened. The great swell of players that came to the club with only a few weeks to go before the start of the season meant big changes. Most of us had in our heads who would be in which side but now we had enough players to fill an extra side. After speaking to WA Hockey they allocated us an additional place in metro four competition meaning the fourth and third sides would be mortal enemies (well opposition teams at least). Now the selectors had a hard decision to make that being, choosing the make up of these sides and after a brief debate they decided to pick two sides of the same strength. Right from the outset of the season both teams were very competitive and when the much-anticipated “First Derby” known, as the “Brooklands Tavern Carona Cup” came upon us nobody wanted to miss this clash. The first derby lived up to its anticipated reputation within minutes of the start of the game and nobody was under the impression that this was a “friendly” game, as both sides were looking for premier ship points and a spot in the four. The game was a delight for all to see with fantastic skills and endeavor. With the end result being a one all scoreline it was decided the game would go to flicks to decide which side would enjoy the spoils. The rest is history, as the Threes will tell you they had it in the bag when the games went to flicks and the fours will tell you about the one that got away!
Game two and the sides lined up with almost the same players as in the first Derby. The Two’s and Vet’s games were completed for the day so with all the wives and girlfriends the derby had the bumper crowd it deserved. The game started at a frenetic pace making the previous “Twos” game look like a Sunday stroll such is the intensity of these clashes. Within minutes the plucky Four’s slotted away a fine goal.
I was standing in the beer garden soaking up the atmosphere whilst talking to a few of the Old Guilford veterans, and noticed their enthusiasm to stay around and in their own words ”watch this high standard game”. When we explained to them that these two sides were from the same club they marveled at the intensity, as not a single player from either side was prepared to take a backward step.
One nil at half time saw the fours with the advantage but Troys Troop’s knew it would not be enough. Mean while Phil’s Bandits were plotting the second half down fall of the Fours. We knew the second half would be a cracker and we were not disappointed. With about ten minutes left in the game the three’s finally scored the equalizing goal they were after. The final few minutes of the game was a display of end to end high quality hockey that was applauded with gusto by all and sundry. The final score after seventy minutes was one all and that was the signal for the crowd to roar “FLICKS”.
The crowd had swelled even more by this time as the victorious ladies side came to catch the second half of the game after playing away at Nedlands. The enthusiastic crowd gathered around curious to know how “Ports’ in his first year as a goal keeper was going to stack up to the experienced Noel Howe who is like a spring washer in goals nothing can squash his ability to control his goal line.
A record amount of saves, misses and ooohs and aarrs were seen culminating with a fitting win to Troys magical fours. I am told the flick count got up to fourteen apiece but you would have to ask Heathy about that as he never lost count….. or did he? Yes, Heathy had as much idea of the flick count, as the exact location of the local library!, And boy did the crowd let him know.
A very big thankyou to the metro 4 sides and umpires as that was the most entertaining game of hockey I have seen in a long time. GO THE MIGHTY HAWKS!!

EDITORS NOTE !!

A special thanks to Barry Romaro for this fantastic report. I too was at the game and was privileged to witness this fine display of fast tempo hockey. For all those who attended I’m sure you will echo Barry’s sentiments and agree that all of us can be proud of both these teams and this further demonstrates the strength of the Southern River Hockey Club!

THE GAMES 9/8/08

The Ones- Barry Vanderputt
1’s V’s Melville 9/8/08
The Hawkes 2nd on the ladder, with 5 of their regular players out, were in for a tough game up against Melville 3rd on the ladder.
The 1st half saw plenty of early possession by Melville with the Hawkes defence under pressure but playing well considering the absence of 3 key defenders. Clive Reader & Quinton Fraser , both promoted from the 2’s , adapted quickly to the turf pitch despite all games so far this season being played on grass. Dave Gibb also from the 2’s slotted in superbly at right half. You can see his confidence growing with every game played in the 1’s.
As the game progressed, the Hawkes clawed their way back into the match with more possession midfield thru the tireless work of Captain Lee Hansord at Right inner & James Gradisen at Centre half. Kev Pethick once again calm in defence which assisted the new players.
Unfortunately Melville went one up late in the half with a well executed short corner variation.
Despite being one dawn at half time, the team was fired up to perform well in the 2nd half. With the new comers settled in, the Hawkes had far more scoring opportunities than Melville & came within a whisker of equalizing on a number of occasions. Brad Kneebone continued his fine form pulling off some great saves which kept us in the hunt. Peter Walker nearly scored the equalizer in the dying minutes with a stinging shot from the top of the circle that narrowly missed.
Final score 1 nil down.
Despite the loss, a sound performance from a proud Hawkes team.

The Two’s- Barry Romaro
Southern River twos V’s UWA
“SUPER CALLUM”
Today we faced the third placed team on the ladder and after playing a bit ordinary against some teams on the lower end of the table we were hoping do gel better as a team. We started well and moved the ball around the way we wanted to, short passes and making leads. We scored within the first ten minutes then went quiet before rounding out the first half with a second goal. During the half time break we spoke positively about the small things we could do to improve getting first to the ball and playing until we heard a whistle. The second half saw UWA dominate and kept us on the back foot for a great deal of the second half. We did have quite a few chances in the second half but we did not take them a little more practice will help. This half saw Callum make a number of saves
Collimating in two of the finest saves I have seen this year. These two saves were one on ones after our defense being soundly beaten and Callum was left in the dee on his own to defend against UWA’s most talented forward and on both occasions he incredibly came up trumps under enormous pressure. Well done guys willeton next week in the bog pit.
Final scores two nil to Southern River.
Last but not least thanks very much to Chris Baker and James Gradisen for umpiring our game today at very late notice.

The Ladies- Paula Westell

Hawks 7 vs Riverside Lions 0

An all round team effort was displayed this week with the backs Gail and Lou passing and hitting the ball well and with precision. The half back line of Karyn, Jo and Candice were defending and creating plays enabling the forwards to score. There was great positional play by Ang who was in all the right places but just unlucky not to get on the score board, The scoring was started by Alanah taking a penalty flick due to a Lions back trying to stop the ball going into goals with the back of her stick and within seconds of Jessica being subbed on she had scored the second goal. Tanase had some excellent runs down the left wing maneuvering the ball around and thru players. Hawks had majority of the play with Jacinta, Karyn, Ang, Paula, Alanah and Jessica having clean possessions and numerous opportunities to score. Karyn got a lovely goal off a short corner and Jacinta has perfected the sweep into goals while Tanase was in the right position to score we are pretty sure the ball did all the work. Thanks to Miranda for wearing the goalie gear again apologies for not giving you more than one touch, but we did notice you doing a good job of sitting down and keeping the back board warm. Well done to all the team we have really gelled into a force to be reckoned with.

Goal Scorers: Alanah 3, Jacinta 1, Karyn 1, Tanase 1, Jessica 1.

Under 11 Blue- Paula Westell
Hawks Blue 0 vs Fremantle 5

With a couple of our regular players missing we saw the Hawks team in positions they hadn’t played before, but they all took on their new responsibilities and played their hearts out. With Ethan missing the Hawks forward attack was spurred on by some great runs from Ryan this week with support from Jasmin, Isobel, Gurkami and Manvir. Paige also did some great tackles and forward passes with super support from Alice. However with Fremantle at full strength most of the game was played in the defensive half with Jessica, Emily and Brodie being called on time and again to defend the Fremantle attack. Well done team keep up that great fighting spirit. Thanks to Matthew from Hawks gold junior team for helping out.

THE GAMES 16/8/08
The Ladies-Paula Westell
Hawks 10 vs Canning 0

Hawks ladies finally hit double figures in what at first appeared to be a tough game with shots on goals limited however we were not intimidated and we stuck to our game plan which allowed us to get on top of Canning. With the entire team at there usual dominant best (except myself who was plum tuckered out within the first five minutes thanks to the lovely hitting from Gail, Alanah and Karyn) it was only a matter of time before goals were converted. Our ‘new’ short corner plays were excellent and had the opposition beat. An excellent game to be apart of and certainly a different result to the last time we played Canning even in the soaring 21degree heat. This win sees us back on top of the ladder, lets keep this momentum rolling into next week when we will face a determined John 23rd team. Big thanks to John Heath for umpiring and to Chris for taking over when John had to leave.

Goal Scorers: Alanah 4, Ang 3, Jacinta 2, Collette 1.

Under 11 Blue- Paula Westell
Hawks Blue 3 vs CT Pirates 0

What a lovely morning for a game of hockey. Hawks were back to full strength on the weekend and dominant in all parts of the field. With Isobel taking on the goalie duties Brodie was left to arrange the forward assault and he did with the combined help from Gurkamal, Manvir, Ryan, Ethan, Alice and Paige. Brodie scored the first goal then Gurkamal and then Manvir. Ethan was very unlucky not to have one or more goals against his name, maybe next week on the turf will see his luck change. The Hawks half and fullback lines were impenetrable with Jessica, Emily, Billie and Zac stopping everything and sending it forward again. Zac even had a few runs forward and scored a lovely goal unfortunately from outside the D and Jessica had a couple of scoring opportunities as well. Sam, Ben, Luxy, Gursheer combined well thru the centre tackling and laying off passes to waiting team mates. What a great team effort by all, an excellent demonstration of junior hockey, Well Played Hawks!! Thanks to Jessica Heath for umpiring.

The Twos- Barry Romaro
Southern River twos V’s Willetton
“DEFENSE WINS GAMES”
This week we were up against a very solid Willetton side and every time we play them the games are close. Today would be no different the Willetton side has improved as the season has worn on and they have certainly added some talented players to their roster. We started with a bang making three or four hard-earned chances in their Dee, but their defense has been strengthened with some positional changes since the last time we battled and we found it hard going. Our line up today was a little rejig due to john being injured and Quinton and guy being unavailable. Ian Eggington put on a superb display at full back for us and Dean Savage-Morton also played very well at left wing. Barry Romaro moved to left inner and although I was a bit rusty I had a reasonable game. Once again this week it was our defense that kept us in the game Clive, Ian and especially Callum produced another clean sheet which was quite an achievement considering Willo got a penalty flick awarded in the first half, only to be saved by Callum. Our defense has now managed to have no goals scored against them on seven occasions which has keep us on top of the table. The end result for this game was one nil once again a very close margin and the rivalry is building between these two sides.
Thanks very much to Barry Vanderputt for umpiring our game today.

HAWK EYE
Southern River Hockey Club Vol.3 Ed 14

HAWKS FLEX MUSCLES

Last weekend we saw an amazing display of the depth and talent within the Southern River Hockey Club this year. Just look at the results from last weeks games to gauge where we are as a club and to further enhance our position of strength for the future.

Mens 1’s- Defeated Willetton 7-0
Ladies- Defeated Old Aquinians 8-0
Mens 2’s Defeated Vic Park 1-0
Mens 3’s Defeated Whitfords 2-0
Mens 4’s Defeated Rangers 4-2
Vets Defeated Melville 2-0
U/15’s Defeated Canning 3-0
U/13’s Defeated Melville 5-0

Unfortunately both under 11 teams were beaten but they put up fantastic efforts to be very competitive. As you can see the talent this club has at the moment is reflected in some awesome displays and rivals clubs are now sitting up and taking notice of us and can see that we are going to be a power in the competition for a long time !!

A WEEKEND IN THE LIFE OF JOHN HEATH

John’s weekend starts sometime on Friday afternoon when he checks in with Janson Hoskins to assist in the marking of the grounds. He usually spends a couple of hours with him and then they have a quiet beer. John then heads home to start planning his strategy as team coach of the under 13’s. This takes him into the late hours of the evening and then treats himself to a beer or two to wind down. Off to bed !!
Saturday 6-30am He is up and dressed and heads down to the club to set up for the morning junior fixtures. He puts goals in place, brings the bacon and eggs in to the kitchen and puts the kettle on for a cuppa. That cuppa never gets drunk because as the players and parents start to gather for the morning games, the demand for bacon and egg burgers and hot coffee begins. He assists Michelle and Cindy in the kitchen until its time for his team to play. His forte is flipping the eggs perfectly and cooking the masses of bacon rashes. Another coffee he poured goes to waste as its time to assemble his team for their game.
Game over, its time to go back to the kitchen to pack up and clean up.
Saturday 12-30pm He is back down the club to make sure all is in readiness for the senior games. He volunteers to umpire the early game and is developing into an umpire of some note. Game over he heads to the kitchen to see if the ladies are ok and treats himself to a Corona. That Corona doesn’t get finished as he is called upon to umpire the late game!! Another sound umpiring display follows and after putting up with the abuse and dirty looks from the players retires to the bar for a well-earned drink. Once there his ear is often bent by some one who has a gripe or wants him to do something for them.
Saturday-sometime after everyone has gone home to their family he helps the last remaining people vacuum the floor, clean the tables and locks the clubrooms.

Sunday10-00am He is on his way to watch daughter Jessica play in the under 15 team at Melville turf. He gets up close and personal with the umpire there and cops more abuse. This team he hands a bit back as he doesn’t have a whistle in his hand.

Sunday Lunchtime- Back home to watch a bit of footy before he heads back to Melville turf to umpire the 1’s game.

Sunday 7-00pm Back in the fray with a whistle in his hand and control of the game. He loves that word control.

Sunday 10-00pm Finally home for the weekend, so its off to bed for an early start Monday.

All this and John has just recovered from major surgery and anxiously awaiting test results from that.

John Heath, the club is truly indebted to you for your tireless acts that often go un noticed by the members but mate you are “OUR CLUB LEGEND” THANKS HEATHY !!

THE BROOKLANDS CORONA CHALLENGE PART TWO 2008

The Corona Challenge is on again this weekend with the 3’s playing the 4’s for bragging rights, the trophy and of course the carton of Corona. A BOG medal will be struck again and awarded following the match. Please make an effort to attend as it has become a ‘showcase’ game for the club and one in which the players rise above themselves.

GAME TIME 3-30PM SR-1(HOME IN FRONT OF THE CLUBHOUSE) THIS SATURDAY 9TH AUGUST

THE GAMES

THE ONES-Barry Vanderputt
1’s V’s Willetton 3/8/08
Motivation is always tough playing a 7pm game on a cold Sunday night. Heartening to see supporters there after a full weekend of hockey.
Willetton fielded a team with a number of juniors as reserves. Despite a promising start to the game, they found it hard to penetrate a solid Hawkes defence. It wasn’t long before the Hawkes midfield took control. Some penetrating passes from deep defence found our forwards high in attack on a number of occasions. This constant pressure was too much for the Willetton defence to handle. The floodgates finally opened with the Hawkes going into the half time break 4 nil up.
The 2nd half was dominated by a Hawkes team keen on building on a considerable half time lead. Once again Bailey found himself high in attack with one defendef to beat. A superb display of skill & strength over the ball saw him beat the cover defence & slot pass the keeper. A memorable goal!
Lee Hansord dominated at right inner & with strong support from James Gradisen at centre half . Steve Martin had a workmanlike game at right half. Fullbacks Leighton Keane & Kevin Pethick were exceptional at fullback where we built a lot of our attacks from. Goal keeper Brad Kneebone didn’t have a lot to do on the night but looked impassable with some confident saves & clearances. It was also pleasing to see Peter Walker, Guy Hoskin & Dave Gibb contribute soundly.
A very even performance from all members of the side proved too much for Willetton with the Hawkes scoring 3 goals in the 2nd half .
Final score Hawkes 7 Willetton 0.
Goal scores Paul Bailey 4, Leighton Keane 1, Lee Hansord 1 & Peter Walker 1.

THE LADIES-Paula Westell
Hawks 8 vs Aquinas 0

Well this was definitely a game of halves, the forwards played excellent in the first half with all the forwards stopping and blocking everything that came their way. Aquinas defense could not get the ball forward and when they did Jo, Karyn and Gail were there to stop them. The scoring was started with a great hit out of the backline from Gail which enabled Paula to put thru a lovely pass that was supposed to have been a square ball to the spot that somehow went straight into the goals?? A sweet thru pass from Karyn saw Paula score the second goal within minutes of the first. Then Ang connected with a bouncing square pass and scored the third. At this time Alanah was getting a bit worried as she hadn’t scored yet but we all knew it would only be a matter of time and then Alanah was on the board belting a short corner straight into the goals and then another (our pass offs are working brilliantly). Jacinta was unlucky not to score her second goal for the season running onto a well weighted thru ball and sweeping it at the goals only to have the goallie deflect it out and then Alanah and Ang scored again, Ang was on fire stopping and hitting everything. Going into half time with a lead of 7 zip you would think we would hit double figures in the second half but that was not to happen…..Aquinas came out strong and with Hawks needing a canoe to get thru the right side of the field the game was now in the hands of the defense. Miranda (goalie) stood steadfast in goals no ball or person was going to get past her even when a mix-up of communication saw her having to defend a two on one attack. I thought we learnt not to do those type of passes in juniors!! Jo and Karyn were instrumental in clearing the ball forward only to see it back again. We did however have a couple of forward attacks in the second half we even tried to lift the ball over the lake only to sit it plop straight in the middle of it. Mind you tip toeing thru the mud is not going to get you anywhere fast Alanah ya big girl and then it happened against the flow Tanase scored our final goal tapping the ball in off the left post. A good team effort by all. Thanks to Jessica for being on the sidelines and for your lovely big hits. A big thanks to Nav for umpiring.

Best on Ground: Miranda, Jo, Karyn
Goal Scorers: Alanah 3, Paula 2, Ang 2, Tanase 1

THE TWO’S-Barry Romaro
“Dizzy Takes the Lead”
This game saw the first team on the ladder playing the last placed team on the ladder, but there was not a single player in our side that thought this was going to be an easy game. The last time we played Vic Park they pushed us all the way we were just lucky the scoreline flattered us. Vic Park started well once again today and with a side that was bolstered with the addition of some very handy players, they began to stretch our defense. Vic Parks ploy of having two players playing very deep into our defense caused some angst for the first ten minutes. With some good talking and Clive’s experience we reorganized our set up so we could still defend whilst not getting caught square. Well done to Callum for keeping us in check at all time without his imput we were sure to let there attack through. We settled into our rhythm and started passing the ball around half way through the first half then dizzy scored his ninth goal for the season taking him to the top of the goal scorers board for the two’s after about twenty minutes. Now that we had scored we felt it would only be a matter of time before we would here the backboard ringing like a bell, it was not to be. Vic Park came out and put pressure on us for the entire second half and at times we were just playing chase the Park player. Dizzy was unlucky not to be awarded a second goal off a short corner to seal up the game but he just took the decision on the chin and we all got on with the game, true two’s spirit. The game finished with a short corner to Vic Park as the final siren sounded. Our defense was very nervous as we had managed to keep a clean slate for seventy minutes and the pressure was on us now to win the game. Vic Park got a shot away from a wide angle but it hit the post at head height and went out of play giving us a win by a narrow margin. Final scores one nil to Southern River.
Last but not least thanks very much to John Heath for umpiring our game today, without taking any thing away from any other umpires we have had this year, it was fantastic to have two umpires who controlled the game and umpired so well.

Hawks Blue 1 vs Dale 2

Missing a couple of regular players saw the Hawks battle hard against Dale. The game was very evenly matched considering Dale seemed to rely solely on a couple of their bigger players to do most of the work. Hawks definitely had their opportunities to score, still need some more hitting practice though. Ethan had a couple of good runs thru the centre as did Gurkami and Manvir. Isobel was in amongst the action and was unlucky not to score. Emily was excellent in defense as was Liam. Jessica seemed to have a bit more hunger in her this week, and did an excellent job stopping Dales forward attack, winning free’s and back tackling her new nickname is now ‘Just Hit it Hard’. Shonia and Jasmin did some great tackles and passes and Brodie was yet again excellent in goals, I am sure he is made of rubber with his extender legs stopping and clearing almost everything. Well played team you are all improving each and every week keep it up. A big thanks to Hawks Gold junior team for lending their players to help us out. A thanks also to Jessica Heath and Alanah Anset for umpiring.

Hawks Continue Dominance

August 6th, 2008 by Jonathon Lanzon

This week the Hawks top men’s side took on the up and coming Willetton. Willetton having a slow start in the season appear to be having a late charge moving up to fifth place and only a win outside of the top four. The Hawks on the other hand are sitting comfortably within the top four and are a win behind top spot.

There were a few new faces in the Hawks camp with Peter Walker, David Gibb and Guy Hoskins filling in while Jonathon Lanzon and Dean Morton were both out through injury. With the whistle starting the Hawks seemed to be taken back by the Willetton early charge after Willetton took control having most of the possession. Up until the 10 minute mark the Hawks never looked like they were going to score with keeper Brad Kneebone frequently put under pressure by Willetton.

However the control from Willetton soon disappeared after Paul Bailie received the ball from a defensive clearance, ran into the penalty circle, and smashed the ball passed a defender and goal keeper to give the Hawks the unexpected lead they wanted. Just like the first goal the second goal came out of the blue after the Hawks managed to get the ball up to the Willetton defensive quarter when James Gradison smashed the ball through a minor gap picking up Peter Walker on the post and allowing Peter to put away the second goal.

Two goals down and Willetton didn’t know what hit them. After dominating the early minutes of the game it was everyone’s surprise to see the Hawks with the upper hand. The Hawks on the other hand took full advantage and continued to put the pressure back on Willetton through mid field possession. The third goal after Lee Hansord skilfully dribbled his way into the Willetton penalty circle and flicked the ball into the back of the net. Paul Bailie, having scored the opening goal of the match, was itching for more goals after he slammed away the fourth goal of the match before the end of the half.

Half time and the Hawks were in a very comfortable position. However there was still another half to play and Willetton showed they have the pace to dominate. Lucky for the Hawks the Willetton night never approved from the start of the second half whistle. Not long after the half started Paul Bailie was rewarded a hat-trick with his third goal for the night and the Hawks’ fifth.

The Sixth goal came from a penalty corner after Leighton Keane, who normally traps the ball for the shooter, decided to do the shooting and smashed the ball in to the net. Paul Bailie’s night wasn’t over after three goals. The goal of the match came when Paul received the ball inside the penalty circle, under pressure he dribbled around a defender and the goalie to have an open shot putting away the seventh goal of the night.

Hawks continued to have more goal scoring opportunities however seven appears to be the most the team can get in a single match after the full time whistle got the better of them. Final score; 7-0.
