HAWK EYE
Southern River Hockey Club Vol.3 Ed 10
A WORD FROM OUR LEADER
Who would believe we are already half way through the 2008 season and from all indications we are heading for another hugely successful one.
I say this because our juniors have swelled in numbers and securing junior games at our home ground has been one of the reasons our existence and popularity is growing in this only our third year as the “Southern River Hockey Club”. Thanks largely to John (Heathy), Cindy, Fred, Guy (Rexy), Dave Vanderputt, the coaches, the volunteer umpires and some of the parents who have unreservedly stepped forward to enable our juniors to enjoy their hockey at such a tender and impressionable age.
What can I say with respect to our seniors you may ask? Men’scoach Barry Vanderputt is firing up his troops and priming the squad for the oncoming finals and Ladies coach Alahna Ansett has her team again on top of their grade.
The discipline and professionalism to our approach to training has filtered right through our seniors whereby five teams out of six have made it to the Challenge Cup (that is after round 1 the top two teams play each other for the Cup). What a marvelous effort. Congratulations to the team captains and all the players for making it to the cup. At this rate we are well on target to once again win the Byrne and Judge trophy.
It is with pleasure I can confirm that our committee are working tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of our hockey club and our coaches are working even harder at making sure the game is played correctly and in a true sporting sense of fair play.
I would also like to extend a special thanks to our ground manager and Hawke Eye editor Janson Hoskins who has ensured our playing fields are at a high standard and the communication lines are well and truly alive by making sure our club newsletter is regularly published.
In summary, at the half way mark we are enjoying a fantastic season mainly because of the hard work by every one of us – so keep up the good work and continue to promote our great game with the sense of fair play, both on and off the playing arena.
Good luck to all the teams who are playing off in the Challenge Cup Go Hawkes..!!

THE GAMES
THE ONES-Barry Vanderputt
1’s Vs Wolves
This was always going to be a tough match against a young Wolves side that beat us 3-1 in the 1st round handing us our only loss for the season.
The game started 10 minutes late with Wolves one player down. The Hawkes dominated much of the 1st half which led to a number of early opportunities that unfortunately couldn’t be capitalized on. We opened the scoring with Paul Bailey receiving the ball in a crowded circle & putting a bullet like “toma” past the keeper. A clinical finish under pressure! Wolves were battling to keep possession of the ball but had a couple shots late in the half. Keeper Brad Kneebone stopped a cracking shot from close range to keep us one nil up at half time.
The 2nd half saw Wolves picking up momentum but unable to penetrate a solid defense. James Gradisen was sound at centre half. Captain Lee Hansord received a lot of the ball at right inner coming back after a weeks break due to a broken finger. The Hawkes managed to hang on despite a great deal of pressure from a Wolves side that refused to give up despite being one player short.

Hawks 2 vs Dellas 1
One week up next week down, although there were still some excellent passages of play often started by Karyn in the midfield, the team play was not consistent throughout the game and it became a very scrappy affair with players not supporting each other like last week. Hawks had plenty of opportunities to score in the first half but didn’t capitalize and had to defend hard to protect the two early goals scored by Paula and Alanah. Dellas came out strong in the second half and with Alanah on the sidelines with a foot injury our forward thrust seemed to wane. Our defense was called on time and again to stand strong and fortunately they did with Gail, Jo, Tash, Karyn, Lou and Miranda clearing the ball only to see it back again moments later. Hawks were very lucky that game time was up before another goal was scored by Dellas. Special thanks to Dizzy and Heathy for umpiring. Although must remember to give Heathy more beer (or less not too sure) before handing him the whistle next time!!

A tough game today that was played in good spirit. The going was hard right from the start with WASP’S confident of an upset. We defended for the first ten to fifteen minutes and held them at bay
only giving them half chances and two short corners. After that period we started to find our feet and moved the ball around with confidence. Our major problem still comes from our poor choice when passing buy going long when the short pass is on. We scored our first short corner through a new variation that had the WASP’S guessing. We went into the second half one nil up but it was not all our way as the WASP’S continued to press our defense, but we held up strong. Early into the second half WASP’S scored a goal through a short corner now we were locked at one all. The play was then a battle of the midfields for sometime. Midway through the second half a little against play we scored a second goal this only seemed to spark up the WASP’S who put pressure on our backline to the end of the game. A good win to the two’s , enjoy the bye next week guy’s and bring on the challenge cup.

THE THREES- Phil Parkes
With the bitter taste still lingering in our mouths from our loss to Kalamunda, the team was set to make amends on a gloomy Saturday afternoon. Blades held a strong defence against our attack and our defence stood stern and repelled their attack driving an offensive from the back line. After numerous shots on goal the backboard was finally ringing to the sound of our efforts. It was 1 – nil at half time and our heads were high but we knew the job was not complete. After some words of advice from Clive we took to the field with a slight tweak to our game plan. The ball was passed around with everybody supporting our own player often providing two or three options and the ball was in our pocession consitently. Our efforts soon paid off early with a second goal, then a third, a fourth, a fifth and a sixth. With too many goals to describe Bitters goal was the stand out goal for the day. Bitters standing just of the right post when the ball was deflected in play at about waist height before it was sent into the back of the net. Late in the second half Blades through down several challenges to our defense bit it remained tight and kept the goals at bay.
Overall a fantastic game all round and it will prepare us well, for what should be a tough and physical encounter this weekend against Suburbans.

THE VETS-Lloyd Jones
The Vets team traveled all the way to Port Kennedy to play Rockingham at their brand new Lark Hill facility.
We welcomed the presence of Brian Coppendale who finally volunteered to assist as we were likely to be short of numbers for this game.
The game was played in good spirit with some good forward play resulting in the half time score sitting at 3/1 in favour of Southern River. Two of these goals (one of them a gem) were scored by the team and competition top goal scorer Trenty. The other goal was scored by Dave Frost from a good short corner variation which gave him enough time to pick his spot on the back board.
The second half started with a firm resolve of not letting Rockingham get into the game, with the first 15 minutes ensuring the ball was kept away from our defensive 25 – which was stoutly led by Len Davies and Dave Frost.
The remaining 20 minutes saw some strong midfield play resulting in goals from our star recruit Colin Stewart and self confessed star Mike Nicholas who scored a good first timer.
Colin Smith (Rat) continues to provide some legs to the team with good runs on the wing and mowing down of opposing players with blistering pace. Keep up that marathon running Rat.
We will need to take advantage of more opportunities in the circle and I am sure with the bye next week we will be ready to take on Wolves in the challenge cup to be played at 2pm at Richardson Park on 12 July. Stay tuned…….
BOG – Len Davies, Colin Stewart and Phil Hewton.

Congratulations to Brian for his first game for the club and the team also thanks him for helping out.

Hawks 0 vs Melville 3
Guts and determination saw the Hawks put up a real challenge to Melville. The score line of 3 zip to Melville was not a true representation of the game with 90% of the game being played in the Hawks forward half and only 3 breakaway goals in the 1st half giving Melville the win. The team play from the Hawks was excellent with Emily, Jessica and Zac steadfast in defense and stopping most traffic coming their way. Ethan had a run up forward and was instrumental in the Hawks forward attack with support from Jasmin and Ryan on the right, Ben and Sam thru the midfield and Gurkami and Manvit on the left. Paige and Brodie shared the goal keeping and Paige was unfortunate to be faced with defending the breakaways. Well done to all the players on what was an excellent team game.
Did you hear…..Brian Coppendale has been around hockey for over 25 years and only last weekend played his first game..
