DID YOU HEAR THE ONE ABOUT ….
5-year-old boy went to visit his grandmother one day. Playing with his toys in her bedroom while grandma was dusting, he looked up and said, “Grandma, how come you don’t have a boyfriend now that Grandpa went to heaven?”
Grandma replied, “Honey, my TV is my boyfriend. I can sit in my bedroom and watch it all day long. The religious programs make me feel good and the comedies make me laugh. I’m happy with my TV as my boyfriend.”
Grandma turned on the TV, and the reception was terrible. She started adjusting the knobs, trying to get the picture in focus. Frustrated, she started hitting the backside of the TV hoping to fix the problem.
The little boy heard the doorbell ring, so he hurried to open the door and there stood Grandma’s minister. The minister said, “Hello son, is your Grandma home?
“The little boy replied, “Yeah, she’s in the bedroom hittin’ her boyfriend.”
The minister fainted.
THE GAMES
THE THREE’S-Phil Parkes
Brookland Corona Cup
Well the game was played hard and fast and It was by far the toughest game of the year so far with all of the boys giving a 100 percent in the rather unfavourable weather conditions. We lost Andy within the first five minutes to injury which saw rats positioned on the wing. After a ferocious start the game settled into more of rythym with the Fourths scoring first however the lead was short lived with it being levelled by Rats after a great run up the wing. At half time it was one a piece. Half time huddle was called and everyone was reminded that we weren’t just playing for three points but we were playing for beer and the boys fired up and were ready to commence the second half.
The second half certainly didn’t start the way we had just talked about with the Fourths scoring very quickly. Much to the credit of the boys and in particular our two new stars Dave and Sinclair the boys held their heads high with even greater determination and increased their rage for the ultimate quest “BEER”. After some great runs up the wing the ledger was finally even after a goal was scored from our latest recruit Dave. The Fourths kept on pressing hard with much of the play in the second half but the defence of Danny and Nav and the goalkeeping of Noel kept the goals at bay. Final Score was 2 all however that was not the end and the Carona’s still didn’t have a home. A Penalty shoot out was held and after two goals a piece the breakthrough finally came, with Noel saving two in a row and the “Beers were all ours”.
Like I said and many can attest it was a fast paced game and certainly one of the toughest games of the year without a doubt. So thanks to Troy and his boys for the game and we look forward to doing all again in about 10 weeks time. Come on the Thirds.

THE FOUR’S- Troy Cornish
The much anticipated Derby was finally on us, and we were the home team. Nothing else had mattered previously but this one game. Both sides were evenly matched, despite the ladder standings, and some rather dubious attempts to injure our players at training by none other than the captain of the “threes”. It did not even make us flinch.
One of the best games of the year with the fulltime result justifying the build up with a 2 – 2 draw. Both teams had their chances, although we probably had more and did not make the most of them. With a carton of Carona on the line, bragging rights and premiership points up for grabs, unfortunately we did not come through, but rest assured DERBY 2 “The Revenge” will be on us before we know it. Bad luck to Ports who performed well in the goals, only narrowly missing some of the flicks, and to our guys who did their best from the penalty spot. A cruel way to end it, as we believed we could have had them in extra time. Congratulations to Leon for taking out the Best on Ground Carona Medal. Bring on DERBY 2!!!
Cheers
THE LADIES- Paula Westell
Hawks vs Riverside Lions
This was a great team game to watch and be apart of with the Hawks winning 9-2. Hawks were completely on top of Riverside Lions with only a couple of break aways catching the team off guard. Karyn controlled the midfield with the help of Jo and Jacinta and it was good to see all the new players Jo, Tenace, Hayley and Jacinta’s skills growing with each game they play. Goal scorers were Alanah 3, Tenace, Ang and Paula with 2 apiece giving Alanah top position on the Southern River goal scorers tally with 9. Special thanks to Andy for umpiring.
THE TWO’S-Barry Romaro
This game had a big build up UWA have always been a tough opponent and today was not going to be any different. The field was very spongy and extremely slow and it took us to half time to adapt to it.
Today we saw to players added to the squad and also some positional changes. Peter Walker had his first game for us at centre forward and Alex Bunting played his second game for us in the position of left half.
Conner Cracknell played at right half and Barry Romaro switched back to right full back.
A big thank you to Conner Cracknell and David Gibb for taking turns in umpiring they did a great job and it was Conner’s first time umpiring! We started this game where we left off from last week by passing the ball around with great skill which resulted in an early goal to us. 1 nil
UWA reacted to the goal and pressed us for ten minutes before scoring an equalizer, 1 all.
But we went into the half time break ahead after scoring another two goals, 3-1
During the half time break we talked about adapting to the surface of the field and we all agreed firmer passes were required. We dominated this half and witnessed an incredible goal by Peter Walker. Dizzy smashed the ball from the side line at Peter who was standing at the very top of the “D”. In desperation at trying not to get hit and keeping the ball heading towards goals he deflected the ball at enormous speed into the top left hand of the goals. We finished the game with six goals and soaking wet from all the rain. Well done guys, we are looking forward to the top off the table clash against Fremantle in a few weeks..
THE ONE’S- Barry Vanderputt
The 1’s new they were up for a tough game playing the top side University.
There was some good hockey played in the 1st half with both sides looking to play well structured open hockey.
The Hawks opened the scoring with Steve Martino pouncing on a loose ball after a short corner attempt. Uni equalized not long after with a thumping short corner.
Score at half time – 1 all
2nd half was once again even with Uni going up 2 – 1 midway through the half after another short corner goal which was deflected high into the net. It was clear Uni’s plan was to get as many shorts as possible & capitalize on their strong short corner battery (their short corner striker has scored 12 goals this season)
The Hawks refused to give up & kept up the pressure with some strong tackling midfield from centre half Gradisen & able support from flank halves Martino &
Steve De Wind. Inners Hansord & Keane were now getting plenty of possession & creating opportunities. Debutant Clinton Laurentsch was also starting to find touch on the wing & was instrumental in the equalizer which was netted by the goal savy Lanzon.
Final score – 2 all which was a fitting result.
THE VETS- Janson HoskinsThe match was played in warm conditions and started at a cracking pace. A spot in the Challenge Cup was up for grabs with only 1 point separating the teams. Hale opened up our defence and slotted a good goal past keeper John Zimdhal and the game was on !!. A good attacking move by the Hawks saw a scamble in the goal mouth and Naveen Holt raised his stick in triumph as the ball crossed the goal line ,1-1.
An even second half but despite some chances by both side the score remained locked.
THE JUNIOR SCENE

UNDER 13’S- John Heath
What a game it was.The top of the table clash was all it was supposed to be.The Hawks played fantastic hockey and showed Mazenod how it was done. Ball movement was very well controlled and it didn’t take long for the first goal to hit the backboards 1.0 A few minutes later and it was all over with the final score being 4.1 With Mazenod scoring a consolation goal with only minutes to go. Now I’m not one to heap praise on my own siblings but a special mention must go to Jess as I threw her back to fullback and she didn’t let her team down with a sterling effort along with frosty to abort all the forward thrust by the opposition. The team is really starting to “gel” together really well and if anyone saw me on the sideline then they would of seen how proud I am of their efforts so far.
WELL DONE GUYS AND GIRLS.
UNDER 11-Juniors Blue-Paula Westell
Hawks vs Canning
Well the rain held off long enough for the team to have a tough battle with Canning drawing nil all. The Hawks had a couple of opportunities to score but were unfortunate with Canning’s defence standing strong. Both Zac and Ethan held the Hawks defence together with Billy sturdy in goals. Hawks forward attack came from Gurkami, Paige, Brodie, Alice and Jasmin backed up by Jessica, Shonia, Sam, Ryan, Ben and Gursheer. Well done to all the players.
******************************************************************UNDER 11-Junior Gold-Chris (Ports) Baker
For our fourth game we went at it hard and we kept Wasps 0-0 to half time. The second half the Wasps scored first but we came back with 1 by Emma Bason and wit in seconds Wasps scored again to make it 2-1. The last five minutes of the game was great with Joshua Bason getting the late goal for a two all draw. To the whole team well done and great going.
A sad time …………………..
For those who may be unaware, Leigh Matthews of Dale Hockey Club passed away recently. Some of us who played our early hockey with Dale will remember Leigh as the Vets Goalie and an all round nice guy. He had a talented way with poetry and “spinning yarns” Many a late night would be had as Leigh would entertain us all with his skillful renditions of life.
Sincere condolences to Leigh’s Family and to the Dale Hockey Club on Leigh’s passing ………………
