Hawks Change the Past

June 30th, 2008 by Jonathon Lanzon

Hawks Score

This week Southern River’s number one men’s team took on their Achilles heel Westside Wolves. The Hawks having been enjoying their position at the top of the ladder were matched up against the only team to have beaten them, third placed Westside Wolves.

With perfect timing the Hawks were back with their regular strikers Lee Hansord and Paul Bailie (as well as third top goal scorer for the comp Jonathon Lanzon) meaning the odds were in favour of the inform side. To improve the odds even more for the Hawks camp the change of venue time hurt the Wolves who were only able to field 10 players.

With the change of venue and time the game started late, conveniently after a slight downfall. However the improving weather soon disappeared with the rain staying on for the show. The Hawks, with an extra player on the field, took control of the game early with frequent attacks. The Wolves showed their strength and held up well however it was inevitable the Hawks would score after a quality reverse stick shot from Paul Bailie putting the ball in the back of the net. With one extra player and one goal ahead the Hawks slowed down in attack and concentrated on defence and possession. This worked well with first half ending 1-0 to the Hawks.

Half time and although the lead wasn’t great the Hawks were glad to be in front, finally. The second half started with the rain continuing and the Hawks back in domination. The midfielders James Gradison, Steve DeWind, and Dean Morton did well to keep the Wolves out of attack while Kevin Pethick and Leighton Keane played their part in foiling any attempts that made it through the half line. During the strong defensive work there were plenty of offensive attacks including multiple short corners. However the Hawks (and Wolves) were unable to penetrate before the game ended with Hawks glad to walk way with a win under their belt continuing on their rights to be top of the ladder.

Next week’s game has changed to Sunday evening at the Perth Hockey Stadium. The Hawks will be looking at continuing on with their lead with past premiership side Riverside.

Goals: Paul Bailie
Best on Ground: Kevin Pethick, Paul Bailie, James Gradison

Hawkeye Vol3 Ed 9

June 26th, 2008 by Janson Hoskins

HAWK EYE
Southern River Hockey Club Vol.3 Ed 9

THERE’S A HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT COMING !!

HAVE YOU GOT A PINK SLIP ?
Please see Jean if you haven’t got one !!

CLUB HOME DAY ….
What a fantastic response to our Club Home Day last weekend and with all but 1 team winning it was a huge success. The “Alfresco Hawks Nest” proved very popular and the atmosphere was very family orientated. BBQ onions aroma filled the air and stirred the mouth watering juices!! Huge thanks to the unsung heroes for their help in setting up and tidying up afterwards. Your efforts didn’t go unnoticed. You know who you are and so do we…………

THE GAMES
The Ones- Barry Vanderputt
1’s V’s Canning 22/6/08
With Captain Lee Hansord & Paul Bailey out this week, the game against Canning was a good test to see how the team would perform without two of its key strikers.
The 1st 15 minutes wasn’t pretty with a number of unforced errors against a side at the bottom of the ladder. We opened the scoring with a powerful short corner strike from Leighton Keane which lifted the side to produce some better hockey. Not long after, a reflex deflection from close range by Jon Lanzon gave the Canning keeper no chance & just before half time Steve Martino made it 3 nil from a crowded circle.
Half time score 3 nil up.
The 2nd half saw the players keen to lift & play some good hockey. Connor was getting plenty of ball on the right wing & Jon Lanzon continued to work hard at centre forward. Dean Savage-Morton contributed with some strong runs from right half & inner. The extra dominance from mid field led to a number of breakaways & short corner opportunities which were well capitalized on by Leighton who finished the game with another 2 goals in the 2nd half resulting in a hat trick for the game.
Not an overly inspiring game to watch but a win never the less.
Final result: Hawkes 5 Canning 0
Goal scores: Leighton Keane 3 Jon Lanzon 1 Steve Martino 1
Best players: Leighton Keane, Connor Cracknell, James Gradisen & Dean Savage-Morton.
The Ladies-Paula Westell
Hawks vs Fremantle

What a fantastic game to be apart of. Hawks dominated the game right from the start by controlling all parts of the field. Even though the backs, Gail, Miranda and Tash didn’t get too much of a touch they were certainly kept on their toes by the lively banter coming from the opposition (you bullies). Karyn as usual controlled the midfield with super support from Jo and Jacinta. Our attack started with a lucky goal from Paula but was soon taken over by our back to form striker Alanah (who scored a lunging dirt in face goal) and although Tanase, Hayley and Ang had opportunities to score they were unlucky not to. Final score was 8 – 0 with Alanah scoring 5, Paula 2 and Karyn 1. A special thanks to Gibbo for umpiring and to Tilly for being our sub for Lou who was out with an injured foot. Well done ladies.

The Twos-Barry Romaro
Southern River twos V’s Curtin-Trinity
Well there is not a lot we can take away from this game. We started the day with a positive talk
about playing our brand of hockey but failed miserably. The thing we needed today was to get back to our short passing game after not keeping to it last week. Full credit to Curtin-Trinity they did not play like a side that was in last place without a win, they took the game to us and at times past us.
We won the game 3-nil but we will have to put more effort into keeping to our game plan if
we want to beat the teams placed higher on the table. Next week we face Wasp’s who will blow us off the park if we play as disgracefully as today. Let’s iron out our deficiencies at training on Thursday night and make up for it next weekend.
Thankyou to Lee Hansord for umpiring us this week and Ian Eggington for the same last week.
Goal scorers: Guy Hoskin 1, Simon Gillespie 1, Peter Walker 1
Best players: Guy Hoskin 3
Simon Gillespie 2
Gavin/Clinton/Quinton 1

The Threes- Phil Parkes
Southern River 3 defeated by Kalamunda 2-1
That is the unfortunate bit. Well the stakes were high and the guys were geared up for a tough encounter with the plan to play strong and hard. In the first half, the game was played at the same tempo where we had finished from the previous week with the SR deep in attack often with the defence remaining strong and the game was played at a torrid pace. With some heated discussion on the field it wasn’t long before the forwards did the talking by hitting the backboard with rusty off loading the ball to Andy Britt to defeat the keeper, score 1 – nil and that is where the score remained until half time. At half time a new game plan was struck and we were back into the heat of the game.
To Kalamunda’s credit they changed their strategy and tactics and this was the begining of our demise. They played deep in our attack with their forwards constantly playing high maintaing the pressure on the defence and even though Noel and Dave Blair continued to save the goals in the last line of the defence Kalamunda scored 20 minutes into the second half, score 1 all. The pressure on SR was now even greater. Kalamunda continued to flood the attack hard and the ball remained in our defensive zone and with 6 minutes to full time Kalamunda scored again 1 – 2. A final effort was made to attack and reclaim our lost goals with Dave Blair moving upto the forward line but it was too little too late before the final whistle sounded and SR3 tasted that foul taste of defeat for the first time. The bitterness will linger for some time yet.
BOG: Dave Blair, Phill Parkes, Ian Eggington.

The Fours-Troy Cornish
Southern River 4 vs. Fremantle 3:30pm @ Home
WIN 1 – 0
Best: Leon Cornish, Chris Baker, Ben Armstrong.
Goal: John Trent. Yellow Card (and Carton Thanks): Dave V.
Coming off the bye and with confidence on our side after our win against Whitfords, we were looking at a percentage boosting game against a team with only one win for the season. Well the tables were turned, and the Fremantle team played above themselves to shock us all. Realistically, they should have been 3 – 0 up at half time, but for some great saves by Ports and them missing easy open goals twice. Halftime 0 – 0.
We weren’t at all happy with our position but happy to have a second chance to come back. Not the prettiest hockey was played in the second half, but we got ourselves on top, however just could not find the net, after numerous short corners and shots at goal. With approx. 70% of the play we finally bashed our way through with a goal mouth scramble resulting in a Trenty reverse-stick flick in the net. A last ditch attack from Fremantle could have drawn with 30 seconds to go, but Ports would deny them for a hard fought win which was a get out of jail free card. We will need to get back to our best against the ladder leading undefeated Kalamunda next week.

The Vets- Won On Forfeit ………………………………………

Under 11 Blue- Paula Westell
Hawks vs Willeton

Hawks mounted a strong attack and Manvit put the first goal on the board early in the first half followed by Gurkami with the second goal. Unfortunately Willeton counter attacked and scored two quick goals to even the score coming into half time. Willeton then managed to score 3 quick goals after half time due to a subbing oversight from the Hawks however the Hawks remained strong in defence and attack after that. Well done to all the players.

THE HEATHS ON HOLIDAYS

Bali 2008
The Heaths on their yearly pilgramage to Bali. 11 days in bali seems like a long time but it does go very quickly, To say we had fun would be an understatement the family of 8 landed on the saturday and the party started with my nephew picking up his motor bike and then slamming it into a wire fence,He hadn,t even had a drink at that stage. Good job i was on hand to help him up once i stopped laughing. A big night was had by all on that night And the rest of the trip was pretty much the same. Trips throughout out the country side were the norm and even a trip to the local police station for not wearing my helmet,That one cost me 200 000 rupiah,Or in our terms about $20. Which wasn,t too bad until you realise that could have bought me another 20 bintangs. Oh well lesson learnt.A great time was had by all and as always it is good to be home.

Funny One …………………………………..
Dear Technical Support,

18 months ago, I upgraded to Girlfriend 1.0 from DrinkingMates 4.2, which I had used for years without any trouble.

However, there are apparently conflicts between these two products and the only solution was to try and run Girlfriend 1.0 with the sound turned off.
To make matters worse, Girlfriend 1.0 is incompatible with several other applications, such as LadsNightOut 3.1, Football 4.5, and Playboy 6.9.

Successive versions of GirlFriend proved no better. I tried a shareware program, Slapper 2.1, but it had many bugs and left a virus in my system, forcing me to shut down completely for several weeks.

Eventually, I tried to run GirlFriend 1.2 and Girlfriend 1.0 at the same time, only to discover that when these two systems detected each other, they caused severe damage to my hardware.

I eventually upgraded to Fiancée 1.0, only to discover that this product soon had to be upgraded further to Wife 1.0. While Wife 1.0 tends to use up all my available resources, it does come bundled with FreeS*xPlus and Cleanhouse2005.
Shortly after this upgrade, however, I found that Wife 1.0 could be very unstable and costly to run.
Any mistakes I made were automatically stored in Wife 1.0′s memory and could not be deleted.
They then resurfaced months later when I had forgotten about them.
Wife 1.0 also has an automatic Diary, Explorer and E-mail filter, and can, without warning, launch TurboStrop and Multi-Whinge. These latter products have no Help files, and I have to try to guess what the problem is.

Additional problems are that Wife 1.0 needs updating regularly, requiring ShoeShop Browser for new attachments and Hairstyle Express which needs to be reinstalled every other week.
Also, when Wife 1.0 attaches itself to my BMW Convertible hard drive, it often crashes.

Wife 1.0 also comes with an irritating pop-up called MotherInLaw, which can’t be turned off.

Recently I’ve been tempted to install Mistress 2006, but there could be problems.
A friend of mine has alerted me to the fact that if Wife 1.0 detects Mistress 2006, it tends to delete all of your Money before uninstalling itself.

Help requested please!

Did you hear this one …………………………..
BEST LAWYER STORY OF THE YEAR, DECADE AND PROBABLY THE CENTURY.
Charlotte, North Carolina. A lawyer purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars, then insured them against, among other things, fire.
Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars and without yet having made even his first premium payment on the policy the lawyer filed a claim against the insurance company.
In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost ‘in a series of small fires.’
The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason, that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion.
The lawyer sued.. and WON! (Stay with me.)
Delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous. The judge stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company, which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be unacceptable fire’ and was obligated to pay the claim.
Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000 to the lawyer for his loss of the cigars lost in the ‘fires’.
NOW FOR THE BEST PART
After the lawyer cashed the cheque, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON!!!
With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000 fine.
This is a true story and was the First Place winner in the recent Criminal Lawyers Award Contest.
ONLY IN AMERICA !

THE GAMES

The Ones-Barry Vanderputt;
Game against Melville opened at a quick pace. A young Melville side held possession of the ball & looked threatening in attack.
The Hawkes scored 1st after a brilliant save by goalkeeper Brad Kneebone. The ball was cleared quickly & decisively out of defense to Paul Bailey at right wing who took on the Melville defense with a penetrating run & finished with a diving goal past an outstretched keeper . An inspiring goal that lifted the side after being dominated early by Melville.
Half time score: 1 nil up
The 2nd half was similar to the 1st with Melville now looking frustrated that they could not penetrate a tight Hawkes defense. Centre half James Gradisen was starting to get on top in the middle & fullbacks Kevin Pethick & Leighton Keane were getting stronger as the game progressed.
The game was sealed with a fine finish from Jonathon Lanzon from an accurate shot from close to the backline with approx 10 minutes to go.
A good win for the Hawkes against a young Melville side which will be a handful in the finals.
Final score: Hawkes 2 Melville 0
Goal scores Bailey 1 Lanzon 1
Best players Brad Kneebone Lee Hansord Paul Bailey
****************************************************************The Two’s-Barry Romaro;
The top of the table clash was finally upon us; this game was going to determine who really is the Metro Three form side. With only one change to our side being Noel Howe filling in as goal keeper
There would be no excuses, this was a must win game for us with the challenge cup looming.
We started well with confident short passing from defense into attack. This Fremantle side gave us a good work out but we were unlucky not to put away the four of five short corners we received during the first half of play. A highlight of the first half was Rexy’s dominance in attack. Rex was an integral part of nearly all our forward moves until he ran headfirst into a cyclone fence on the boundary line behind the goals. We went into the half time break at nil all.
We came out in the second half brimming with confidence as we had dominated the first half and we were sure it was only a matter of time before we scored the goals our attack was promising. The tables were turned at the ten-minute mark of the second half with Fremantle converting a penalty corner. The call went out for “Five”(this means all player must man up and lift their attack on the ball) and every body knuckled down to business. The most important factor in our side is our belief in overcoming adversity and today was to be no different. Our fierce attack on the ball saw Rexy slot in the equalizer and our confidence was high. We toiled hard for another ten minutes before Rexy slotted away another and the game was ours to win. We dominated for the last ten minutes and had a series of shortcorner chances but failed to put them away. Final score line was Southern River two Fremantle one. This result puts us on top of the table and into the challenge cup well done to the mighty twos.
Goals: Guy Hoskin (Rex) two
Best player votes: Guy Hoskin 3
Clive Reader/Barry Romaro 2
Gavin Mc Curren/Quinton Fraser 1

The Three’s- Phil Parkes
Well after two weeks without a game it was time to get some valuable match points to cement our position in the top four. We went into the game at Fremantle with a new strategy and it was to be tested for the first time. The game started and the frustration of having two weeks was evident as we just couldn’t click as one, the talk on the field was lacking and the umpiring was a little frustrating. Fremantle scored the first goal with a great run down the wing and into the middle of the D and that is when we started to settle down. After a period of consolidation it wasn’t long before the results were on the board with a great chase by Adam down the wind with a pass into the D followed by Bitters beating the keeper one-all. This did not stop Fremantle and they kept up the attack and with Noel in goals some great saves were made to keep the opposition at bay.
Half time was our chance to regroup and recommit to the game plan and suck on the oranges. The play up forward opened up with some great run down the wings and the centre and it was early in the second half when Bitmead found the back board once more two – one. The defence stood up well with Leon and Danny playing down back and being supported by Ian and Aarron. After great push from defence through the centre the ball was again in the attacking D with the goalkeeper protecting the goals lying down the ball only to be rebounded of the keepers pads onto Rusty’s stick and then slotted into the back board where it rightfully belonged. To Fremantle’s credit they continued to push hard until the last minute but the defence stood strong to deny their offensive and keep the final score 3 -1. Thanks To Leon, Rhys for their assistance, Quinton for umpiring (greatly appreciated) and the TWO’s for their support.
BOG. Bitmead, Rusty, Noel

The Ladies-Paula Westell
Hawks vs John 23rds
What an exhausting game in what seemed like summer conditions. The team battled hard against a quality opposition that we had never faced before and having some of our players trying out new positions. Within the first couple of minutes we had our first and only goal on the board however that seemed to spur on the John 23rds team who had quite a few opportunities to equalize but were unable to penetrate our defensive half and fullback line backed by a stella performance from Tash our goalkeeper. Well done to all the girls trying out new positions and taking on new responsibilities. This win puts us back on top of the ladder. A BIG thanks again to Kevin for umpiring.

U/11-Juniors Blue- Paula Westell
Hawks Blue vs Hawks Yellow
The junior derby was a great game to watch lead by a superb solo run from Zac (fullback) down the right wing before winning a free hit in the forward 25. All the players were in the thick of it with only Ben (goalkeeper) getting a couple of touches late in the game. Most of the players are now starting to hold their positions which saw Paige, Brodie and Ryan get some extra touches that they would not normally have received. Well done to all the players on a 3-1 win. Goal scorers Zac 1, Isobel 1 and Gurkami 1.

Deja-vu for the Hawks

June 17th, 2008 by Jonathon Lanzon

Hawks Strong in Defence

The Hawks were back in action on Sunday night with a rematch against Melville at Melville. The last time the two teams played each other was in round 1 with the Hawks walking away 3-0 after a tough fight. With all teams having played each other the Hawks entered the match in second position while Melville having also done well saw themselves entering the match in third.

With the weather looking gloomy the game started with a cool breeze. The Hawks, having loss the toss, were quick to pounce on the ball taking early possession and showing Melville they were in it for the points. Through some tough resistance the Hawks made ample opportunities early in the game. It took about 10 minutes before Paul Bailie intercepted the ball at the top of the D and with a clear shot pounded the ball into the back of the net. One goal up and the game still had plenty of time remaining until a result was ensured. Taking no chances the Hawks took the defensive approach after Melville lifted their game with an onslaught of shots only to see them saved by keeper Brad Kneebone.

The second half and the Hawks were still up, thanks mainly to Brad’s efforts in goals. The second half started similarly to the first half. The Hawks dominated in defence feeding the ball to the mid field creating plenty of scoring opportunities. However the Hawks weren’t able to convert providing Melville the chance to regroup to put on an offensive show of their own. Thankfully the Hawks defence was too strong and once again were able to get back into attack. The second goal came five minutes before the end after a loose ball from James Gradison was picked up by Jonathon Lanzon a metre off the back line and put into the back of the net on the narrowest of angles.

The second goal was enough to reduce Melville’s determination and the Hawks happily saw the time run down with the Hawks once again walking away winners after a tough fight from Melville. The 2-0 win sees Hawks sit comfortably second on the ladder and Melville pushed down to fourth. Next week’s game is on Sunday against bottom of the ladder Canning.

Goals: Paul Bailie, Jonathon Lanzon
Best on Ground: Brad Kneebone, Lee Hansord, Paul Bailie

Southern River twos V’s Willetton
This match was one game we have been looking forward to. Willetton have
Been a thorn in our side in recent years and today we had that in mind as we took to the field.
We started with a slight line up change that saw Connor start in the left wing position.
Today we had two players on the bench to interchange with and Barry Vanderputt organizing the changes. Congratulations to Ian Eggington who played his first game for us today and played very well in at least three different positions. We started pretty rough today once again adjusting to the surface very slowly. Fortunately not all of us had the yips as both Clive and Gibbo covered well for me as tried to remember how to hit the ball. Willetton threw everything at us right from the start
and our defense was under pressure for the first seven to ten minutes. The call went out for us to play our own brand of hockey and instant results were seen. Our superior ball movement saw us score a goal at around about the twenty-minute mark of the first half. We finished the half two nil up
And went into the change rooms confident of winning this game.
We came out with purpose in the second half and moved the ball around so well that the oppositions frustration was beginning to show. We scored five team goals in the second half and missed about five more, great effort gent’s lets look to next week’s top of the table clash with Fremantle.

Hawks vs Canning
This was a great demonstration of how not to play hockey against a team with only 9 players. Unfortunately a game that should have been a walk over turned into a game of ‘Oh my Gosh’. There were moments of exceptional game play and skill but these were few and far between. Credit needs to be given to Canning as they fought hard and wanted a win and kept the score to a 1 all draw with a steadfast backline. Special thanks to both Kevin for umpiring and to TJ for babysitting.

Hawks vs Wasps
It was a lovely day on the new home ground for hockey. Hawks battled well against the Wasps and had a few scoring opportunities lead by Isobel, Gurkami and Jasmin. Unfortunately the Wasps managed to get past our stella defense of Zac, Ethan, Billy, Brodie and score. With the score 1 nill Hawks continued forward pressure but to no avail. Better luck next week team. Special welcome to Emily playing her first game of hockey.

THE VETS-Lloyd Jones
Bolstered by the return of Trenty and Phil Hewton and the skill and endeavor of our new recruit Colin Stewart the vets had a comfortable win in the end – although the score was locked at 3 apiece at half time. A great second half with a further 3 goals scored to end up in a rout !!
Depending on how Hale went in their game against the top side Wolves we are hoping that this win would put is in the play off for the challenge cup.

QUIZ NITE COMING UP IN JULY !!
