HAWK EYE
Southern River Hockey Club Vol.3 Ed 5
THE DERBY
Yes, the Derby has arrived !!
This week sees the inugural “Brooklands Carona Cup” match between our 3’s and 4’s.
This match will become a regular season fixture between the Hawks 3rd side and 4th side no matter what grade they are playing. A trophy has been struck and will be awarded to the successful team on Saturday. We are fortunate to have the Brooklands Tavern as the sponsor for this game and the winning team will also be presented with a carton of Carona after the game !! In the event of a draw the team with the highest position on the ladder, as at the conclusion of the preceding set of fixtures, will be declared the winner. In subsequent years when the teams are not in the same grade, we will arrange a match at the conclusion on the first round each year at a time to be mutually acceptable to both teams. In the event of a draw in subsequent matches, extra time will be played.
We call on all supporters to be present this Saturday at 3.30pm to witness this inaugural event. We hope this will be a tradition to be continued for many years as the Southern River Hockey Club “ DERBY”
The sports nite was a huge success with in excess of 30 members present. Thanks to Jonathon Lanzon for arranging the evening and to John Heath for the ‘Big Screen”, Ian ( The Pizza Man ) Eggington for feeding the starving, Dave Vanderputt for quenching the thirst of dry sports fans and Kevin Pethick for ‘greasing the wheels’………….
‘The Funnies’
A Chinese man walks into a bar in America late one night and he saw Steven Spielberg.
As he was a great fan of his movies, he rushes over to him, and asks for his autograph.
Instead, Spielberg gives him a slap and says, ‘You Chinese people bombed our Pearl Habour, get outta here.’
The astonished Chinese man replied, ‘It was not the Chinese who bombed your PearlHarbour, it was the Japanese’.
‘Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, you’re all the same,’ replied Spielberg.
In return, the Chinese gives Spielberg a slap and says, ‘You sank the Titanic, my forefathers were on that ship.’
Shocked, Spielberg replies, ‘It was the iceberg that sank the ship, not me.’
The Chinese replies, ‘Iceberg, Spielberg, Carlsberg, you’re all the same.’
An old man, Mr. Wallace, was living in a nursing home. One day he appeared to be very sad and depressed. Nurse Tracy asked him if there was anything wrong,
‘Yes, Nurse Tracy,’ said Mr. Wallace. ‘My Private Part died today, and I am very sad.’
Knowing her patients were a little forgetful and sometimes a little crazy, she replied, ‘Oh, I’m so sorry, Mr. Wallace. Please accept my condolences.’
The following day, Mr. Wallace was walking down the hall with his Private Part hanging out of his pajamas. He met Nurse Tracy.
‘Mr. Wallace,’ she said, ‘You shouldn’t be walking down the hall like that. Please put your Private Part back inside your pajamas.’
‘But, Nurse Tracy I can’t,’ replied Mr. Wallace. ‘I told you yesterday that my Private Part died.
‘Yes,’ said Nurse Tracy, ‘you did tell me that, but why is it hanging out of your pajamas?’
‘Well,’ he replied, ‘Today is the viewing.’
THE GAMES
THE ONES”
Hawks V’s Dale
This was always going to be a game of considerable interest bearing in mind the history of the two clubs.
The 1st half was a scrappy affair with errors by both sides resulting in a number of turnovers.
We had most of the play but couldn’t score with Dale putting numbers behind the ball making it difficult to penetrate the circle & get a clean shot away.
Against the run of play, Dale scored in a crowded circle to go 1 up at halftime.
The 2nd half saw a vast improvement with the team playing with greater cohesion & composure. Good pressure was maintained on the Dale defense resulting in a number of short corners. A short corner variation with a layoff to Paul Bailey at the top of the circle saw the ball crashing into the backboards.
With the score level at 1 all & the Hawkes now brimming with confidence it wasn’t long before the floodgates opened. The midfield was now in complete control which resulted in a number of opportunities & another 4 goals to wrap up the match comfortably at 5 -1.
A good result considering the slow 1st half.
Goals – Bailey 1, Lanzon 1, D Keane 2 & Hansord 1
Best – Gradisen, Bailey, Hansord.

THE TWO’S
Today we got to play on one of the very best grass surfaces in Western Australia. The attitude by us during the warm up set the tone for the game; all team members were listening
and prepared to carry out the tasks given to them.
We won the toss and everything else from that point onwards.
Guy Hoskin had one goal on the board before the opposition knew what was going on. Two minutes later and the score was two nil.
The passing of the ball was superb today and the great running of dizzy and Conner broke the defense of Vic Park time and time again. The great work of our flanks was turned into goal after goal. The luckless Panthers were happy to see half time. 5-nil “
At half time we talked about the wasted chances that we had in the first half and decided it was from messing around with the ball instead of giving the pass off.
The second half saw us score a couple more goals but really we had run out of puff.
A great game guys but next week we are up against UWA who will be a stronger opponent.
Goals: Guy Hoskin 3, John Gradisen 2 , Conner Cracknel 2

THE THREE’S
Southern River 1 Drew Whitfords 1 at Whitfords
Well after loading up the cars with a packed lunch and water bag the extended trek was made all the way to Whtifords except for John Trent who just had to drive around the corner. Well it was expected to be a tough game with first playing second and we started with a player down only adding to the pressure. Whitfords kept on attacking hard but the team played a very defensive game and after defending a series of short corners we started to find ourselves in attack building up from the back line. After about 25 minutes the first goal was struck and it was all ours courtesy of Ian from the top of the D past the keeper a defender and into the right had side of the goal post. The boys kept pressing hard into attack and finally a second goal was scored, only to be disallowed after much confusion, and this certainly turned the heat up. However, it only increased our determination before half time was called.
Unfortunately we let our guard down and Whitfords hit back with a goal within the first five minutes, one all. The game maintained a vicious pace with some hard work put in by the forwards getting back to assist in defence. The pressure was maintained by both sides till the very end with some great work by Noel in goals being the last line of defence. Defensively a very good game. Well the Mighty Thirds are now geared up for the inaugural Derby and are looking forward to another win.
BOG Danny Hetherington, Noel ( The Keeper), Rusty Snook.
THE FOUR’S
Metro 4 : SR4 Vs Stirling Rangers
LOST 2 – 1
Goalscorer: Rhys Keane
Best (in order): Ben Armstrong, Alex Bunting, Troy Cornish
Very pleasing hard performance against a good attacking side. It was 1 – 1 at half time, with a scrapped goal from Rhys one minute before the half to draw level. It was our best team effort so far. Reduced to only ten men for the entire second half did halt our attacking ability, but boosted our resolve in defence. Unfortunately they slipped through with a good goal early in the second half. We fought well and even had a few good chances ourselves, with Ben Armstrong fighting like a tiger to win some shorts. However, it was not to be and the result 2 – 1, did not justify our efforts when we at least deserved a draw. All Out war next week with the much awaited and anticipated DERBY! Time to show the “threes” who’s the better team!
THE VETS
SR 1 V Wolves 3
Best players – Baz, Phil Hewton, and Naveen Holt
Goal scorer – Colin Smith (Rat)
Competitive and hard fought game and deserved to share the points. Sadly missed the goal scoring ability of Trenty

I walked into Bunning’s hardware at lunchtime, wandered down the timber aisle and some old fart dressed in a red shirt with a green apron on asked me if I wanted decking.
Fortunately, I got the first half dozen punches in and sorted the b———-d out.
Those less suspecting might not be so lucky. Spread this warning on to all your friends.
Some team reports did not make it to my desk this week. I am on a tight deadline for any article insertions, so team captains and or coaches must have reports to me at vicjan1201@bigpond.com by Tuesday evening AT THE VERY LATEST. Any article after this time will miss out. Team reports are articles of HIGH interest, particularly to the players in that team. They are a vital part of the make up of this publication as it allows the club members and parents/supporters to keep up with the progress of our teams. Articles are to be emailed to me NOT handed to me at the club. Thanks to the captains/coaches who manage to email me each week. Your co operation is appreciated. !!!
