Dita has been found

May 27th, 2008 by Jonathon Lanzon

Dita Terra V5

News just in: John Gradisen has been reunited with his long lost Dita Terra V5 Hockey stick. John’s hockey stick went missing on the weekend of the Capel match.

Thought to have been lost forever the stick was found after being misplaced in someone’s hockey bag that had been stored away all this time.

John and his hockey stick are happy to be together again. Although the Dita has some work to do after John has hit top of the Hawks’ goal scorer’s table with his replacement hockey stick.

Hawkeye Vol3 Ed 5

May 22nd, 2008 by Janson Hoskins

HAWK EYE
Southern River Hockey Club Vol.3 Ed 5

THE DERBY

Yes, the Derby has arrived !!
This week sees the inugural “Brooklands Carona Cup” match between our 3’s and 4’s.
This match will become a regular season fixture between the Hawks 3rd side and 4th side no matter what grade they are playing. A trophy has been struck and will be awarded to the successful team on Saturday. We are fortunate to have the Brooklands Tavern as the sponsor for this game and the winning team will also be presented with a carton of Carona after the game !! In the event of a draw the team with the highest position on the ladder, as at the conclusion of the preceding set of fixtures, will be declared the winner. In subsequent years when the teams are not in the same grade, we will arrange a match at the conclusion on the first round each year at a time to be mutually acceptable to both teams. In the event of a draw in subsequent matches, extra time will be played.

We call on all supporters to be present this Saturday at 3.30pm to witness this inaugural event. We hope this will be a tradition to be continued for many years as the Southern River Hockey Club “ DERBY”

The sports nite was a huge success with in excess of 30 members present. Thanks to Jonathon Lanzon for arranging the evening and to John Heath for the ‘Big Screen”, Ian ( The Pizza Man ) Eggington for feeding the starving, Dave Vanderputt for quenching the thirst of dry sports fans and Kevin Pethick for ‘greasing the wheels’………….

‘The Funnies’
A Chinese man walks into a bar in America late one night and he saw Steven Spielberg.
As he was a great fan of his movies, he rushes over to him, and asks for his autograph.
Instead, Spielberg gives him a slap and says, ‘You Chinese people bombed our Pearl Habour, get outta here.’
The astonished Chinese man replied, ‘It was not the Chinese who bombed your PearlHarbour, it was the Japanese’.
‘Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, you’re all the same,’ replied Spielberg.
In return, the Chinese gives Spielberg a slap and says, ‘You sank the Titanic, my forefathers were on that ship.’
Shocked, Spielberg replies, ‘It was the iceberg that sank the ship, not me.’
The Chinese replies, ‘Iceberg, Spielberg, Carlsberg, you’re all the same.’

An old man, Mr. Wallace, was living in a nursing home. One day he appeared to be very sad and depressed. Nurse Tracy asked him if there was anything wrong,
‘Yes, Nurse Tracy,’ said Mr. Wallace. ‘My Private Part died today, and I am very sad.’

Knowing her patients were a little forgetful and sometimes a little crazy, she replied, ‘Oh, I’m so sorry, Mr. Wallace. Please accept my condolences.’

The following day, Mr. Wallace was walking down the hall with his Private Part hanging out of his pajamas. He met Nurse Tracy.
‘Mr. Wallace,’ she said, ‘You shouldn’t be walking down the hall like that. Please put your Private Part back inside your pajamas.’
‘But, Nurse Tracy I can’t,’ replied Mr. Wallace. ‘I told you yesterday that my Private Part died.

‘Yes,’ said Nurse Tracy, ‘you did tell me that, but why is it hanging out of your pajamas?’

‘Well,’ he replied, ‘Today is the viewing.’

THE GAMES
THE ONES”
Hawks V’s Dale
This was always going to be a game of considerable interest bearing in mind the history of the two clubs.
The 1st half was a scrappy affair with errors by both sides resulting in a number of turnovers.
We had most of the play but couldn’t score with Dale putting numbers behind the ball making it difficult to penetrate the circle & get a clean shot away.
Against the run of play, Dale scored in a crowded circle to go 1 up at halftime.
The 2nd half saw a vast improvement with the team playing with greater cohesion & composure. Good pressure was maintained on the Dale defense resulting in a number of short corners. A short corner variation with a layoff to Paul Bailey at the top of the circle saw the ball crashing into the backboards.
With the score level at 1 all & the Hawkes now brimming with confidence it wasn’t long before the floodgates opened. The midfield was now in complete control which resulted in a number of opportunities & another 4 goals to wrap up the match comfortably at 5 -1.
A good result considering the slow 1st half.
Goals – Bailey 1, Lanzon 1, D Keane 2 & Hansord 1
Best – Gradisen, Bailey, Hansord.

Barry V

THE TWO’S
Today we got to play on one of the very best grass surfaces in Western Australia. The attitude by us during the warm up set the tone for the game; all team members were listening
and prepared to carry out the tasks given to them.
We won the toss and everything else from that point onwards.
Guy Hoskin had one goal on the board before the opposition knew what was going on. Two minutes later and the score was two nil.
The passing of the ball was superb today and the great running of dizzy and Conner broke the defense of Vic Park time and time again. The great work of our flanks was turned into goal after goal. The luckless Panthers were happy to see half time. 5-nil “
At half time we talked about the wasted chances that we had in the first half and decided it was from messing around with the ball instead of giving the pass off.
The second half saw us score a couple more goals but really we had run out of puff.
A great game guys but next week we are up against UWA who will be a stronger opponent.

Goals: Guy Hoskin 3, John Gradisen 2 , Conner Cracknel 2

Best players
Guy Hoskin 3

THE THREE’S

Southern River 1 Drew Whitfords 1 at Whitfords

Well after loading up the cars with a packed lunch and water bag the extended trek was made all the way to Whtifords except for John Trent who just had to drive around the corner. Well it was expected to be a tough game with first playing second and we started with a player down only adding to the pressure. Whitfords kept on attacking hard but the team played a very defensive game and after defending a series of short corners we started to find ourselves in attack building up from the back line. After about 25 minutes the first goal was struck and it was all ours courtesy of Ian from the top of the D past the keeper a defender and into the right had side of the goal post. The boys kept pressing hard into attack and finally a second goal was scored, only to be disallowed after much confusion, and this certainly turned the heat up. However, it only increased our determination before half time was called.
Unfortunately we let our guard down and Whitfords hit back with a goal within the first five minutes, one all. The game maintained a vicious pace with some hard work put in by the forwards getting back to assist in defence. The pressure was maintained by both sides till the very end with some great work by Noel in goals being the last line of defence. Defensively a very good game. Well the Mighty Thirds are now geared up for the inaugural Derby and are looking forward to another win.
BOG Danny Hetherington, Noel ( The Keeper), Rusty Snook.

THE FOUR’S
Metro 4 : SR4 Vs Stirling Rangers
LOST 2 – 1
Goalscorer: Rhys Keane
Best (in order): Ben Armstrong, Alex Bunting, Troy Cornish
Very pleasing hard performance against a good attacking side. It was 1 – 1 at half time, with a scrapped goal from Rhys one minute before the half to draw level. It was our best team effort so far. Reduced to only ten men for the entire second half did halt our attacking ability, but boosted our resolve in defence. Unfortunately they slipped through with a good goal early in the second half. We fought well and even had a few good chances ourselves, with Ben Armstrong fighting like a tiger to win some shorts. However, it was not to be and the result 2 – 1, did not justify our efforts when we at least deserved a draw. All Out war next week with the much awaited and anticipated DERBY! Time to show the “threes” who’s the better team!

THE VETS
SR 1 V Wolves 3
Best players – Baz, Phil Hewton, and Naveen Holt
Goal scorer – Colin Smith (Rat)
Competitive and hard fought game and deserved to share the points. Sadly missed the goal scoring ability of Trenty

I walked into Bunning’s hardware at lunchtime, wandered down the timber aisle and some old fart dressed in a red shirt with a green apron on asked me if I wanted decking.
Fortunately, I got the first half dozen punches in and sorted the b———-d out.
Those less suspecting might not be so lucky. Spread this warning on to all your friends.

Some team reports did not make it to my desk this week. I am on a tight deadline for any article insertions, so team captains and or coaches must have reports to me at vicjan1201@bigpond.com by Tuesday evening AT THE VERY LATEST. Any article after this time will miss out. Team reports are articles of HIGH interest, particularly to the players in that team. They are a vital part of the make up of this publication as it allows the club members and parents/supporters to keep up with the progress of our teams. Articles are to be emailed to me NOT handed to me at the club. Thanks to the captains/coaches who manage to email me each week. Your co operation is appreciated. !!!

Hawks too Good for Dale

May 20th, 2008 by Jonathon Lanzon

Goal Scoring Hawks

The Hawks’ first of two highly anticipated inter-regional match ups for the year occurred over the weekend. The match saw third placed Southern River’s top men’s side taking on the seventh positioned Dale top men’s side. Dale having beaten the only team to take points away from the Hawks meant the game could end with unexpected results.

It was anyone’s guess as to how the game would pan out after a fairly scrappy first half saw Dale get a lucky deflection inside the circle to get a 1-0 lead up on the Hawks going into the second half. The Hawks had plenty of chances in the first half and multiple short corners. However they weren’t able to penetrate where it counts.

The second half was an entirely different storey. The Hawks, not prepared to lose the game, upped the ante and took on Dale with force. It would be 10 minutes of persistent attacks before the Hawks saw the equalising goal from Paul Bailie off a short corner. The tension didn’t stop after the first goal with further determination from the Hawks saw the second goal off another short corner from Daniel Keane another 10 minutes later taking the lead for the first time.

Although the 2-1 lead was enough to take the points away the Hawks needed more goals to guarantee victory. And guarantee victory they did when 5 minutes later Jonathon Lanzon stepped up to the challenge putting home the third goal for the Hawks. Being two goals behind Dale started to show their weakness with the Hawks taking advantage of the lead. Goal number four came 5 minutes later from Daniel again after a perfect strike from the edge of the circle. To finish the game off Captain Lee Hansord had a perfect run weaving in and out of the Dale defence slapping the ball into the back of the net to complete the Hawks’ 5-1 victory over Dale.

The win moves the Hawks up to second position only one point behind top side UWA. Where as Dale stay put in second last. Unfortunately the win didn’t come without casualties with Rob DeWind suffering a knee injury in the second half. Fingers crossed it isn’t too serious and hope to see Rob back soon.

Next week’s game will be a fight for top spot with the Hawks taking on UWA on Sunday night at UWA’s home ground. The Hawks will be looking for another win to almost guarantee a spot into the mid season challenge cup.

Hawkeye Vol 3 Ed 4

HAWK EYE
Southern River Hockey Club Vol.3 Ed 4

SPORTS NITE
This Saturday, May 17th, we have our FA Cup night at the club.

As it turns out we have the Eagles on TV, followed by 20/20 Cricket and then
a cross over to the FA Cup (Soccer).

We desperately need to confirm numbers on Thursday night as we will be
cooking Pizza’s on the night with a pizza oven being brought in.

We also plan to have the pool table in action and a table tennis table as
well so plenty to do.

Would you please contact as many players as you can on and before this
Thursday night, especially those who you think may not turn up to training.

The door cost is a mere $10 for the entertainment and pizza.

We need a strong showing to confirm that running events at the club is the
direction that we want to go in, all club members are welcome with their
partners, kids as well if sitters can’t be found.
The bar will be open and we need you to kick off our social calendar for the year !!

THE JUNIOR SCENE !!
Last Saturday saw the first centralised home fixture for our home ground and here’s how it went …..
6.30am- Phew at least I didn’t have a hangover !! It was the initial set of fixtures for our u/11 and u/13 teams and it went great except for the rain. A big thank you to Cindy, Michelle, Rexy,Tony and Michael for their great work in the kitchen in cooking up a storm. By all reports (parents of the opposition included) they satisfied the starving millions! ? Cindy’s idea of giving each player a bunch of flowers to give to their Mums for Mothers Day went down a treat. That is unless you were the one putting them together until 11.30pm the night before 
Well done Cindy!!
Dave Vanderputt, Phil Hewton, Chris Baker (Ports) Janson Hoskins and John Heath were called on to do the goals and mark the grounds for the day and as you can see they have done a great job. Without the contribution of the above named people the day wouldn’t have happened. A big thank you to you all !!
By the way, no team form the Hawks lost on the morning so it was a great result on the field as well. A special mention must go to Chris Baker. He was at the club most of Friday and by my side most of Saturday morning helping out everywhere and doing a fantastic job. The only thing I need from him now is a GAG and it would be perfect. Seriously though, thanks Ports for your great effort.

Heathy…

THE GAMES

U/11 GOLD- After a late start we attacked well and it was 0-0 at half time. Some good play from Joshua Bason and Liam Poole were the highlights of the first half. The second half saw Chelsea Heath find the back of the net. Good play from Alisha Francis at right half saw us hold on for a 1-0 win. Well done team.
My contact details are as follows- 93988905 or mob 0420279772

Ports (Chris)

U/13- What a game. The team played fantastic. This was the team Aiden left to come to Southern River, so I built it up with the team to make sure we got the points. 1-0 at half time from a short corner scored by Aiden. We held the ball well all agme and saw the rewards in the second half with a great pick up on the post by Rosco, 2-0. Another short corner and 3-0. Aiden again starring with a great hit from the top of the “D”. A mention must be made of the way the guys listened and out into practise all the things we learnt at training. Well done team and thanks to Chris Baker for standing with a whistle in his hand…

Heathy

Women– Today saw us up against an unknown opponent in Kwinana. They played a very set defensive game and held the score at 0-0 until half way through the second half. A quick pass set up Collette on the wing. Overall it was a hard game and with all of us feeling we played flat. The new field was slightly spongey which tested our trapping skills and the humidity was a little uncomfortable. Thanks to Naveen and Heathy for umpiring.

ONES- Result SRHC 1 Riverside 0
After coming off a 3 – 1 loss last week, the side was keen to get back on the winners list. This was always going to be a tough game as Riverside Lions won the Premiership last year & remained unbeaten in their 1st 3 games.
The 1st half was dominated by the Hawks with some well structured play & a dominant midfield. The deep defense look tight & the forwards looked threatening.
Despite a number of good opportunities, we couldn’t capitalize on the scoreboard.
Half time score – nil all.
The 2nd half continued with the Hawks once again dominating the game applying plenty of pressure on the Riverside deep defense.
Considerable drive was generated from centre half – James Gradisen who was impassable in the mid field with good support from inside forwards Lee Hansord & Daniel Keene.
The pressure finally told with a goal from Paul Bailey late in the 2nd half.
Riverside had a few penetrating attacks late in the game but were well held out by the deep defense.
Final score SRHC 1 Riverside 0
Best Players James Gradisen, Lee Hansord, Paul Bailey

Barry V.

TWOS- Our team put on a great exhibition of how hockey can be played today.
It was also great to finally have a home game after waiting five weeks.
The movement of the ball was superior to last week and it made all the difference.
We started the game with a few positional changes to our previous games.
This week Clinton moved to right full back and teamed up with Clive and was outstanding,
He like Clive dominated our defense repelling every attack and cutting through the opposition with ease.
We also saw Barry line up in his customary left inner position with Quinton moving to center forward and dizzy
Lining up at left wing
We talked about rebuilding “the wall” as we have done in recent years to press their defense when they get free hits, Like recent years it was a huge success we trapped or got our sticks to nearly everything that was hit leaving their defense with no options. With this dominance we passed the ball around
and the maestro (John Gradisen) Cleaned up big time. John put on a rare display of left wing dominance slotting in four sensational goals and missing another two by less than a few centimeters. Our other goal was superbly scored from a short corner set play. The ball was hit out by john trapped by Barry then baz held it long enough to draw the player and then
Passed the ball off to Quinton who craftily flicked the ball into the goals.
A great effort by all .
Goals: John Gradisen 4, Quinton Fraser 1
Best player’s: John Gradisen, Clive reader, Gavin Mc Clarren .

Barry Romaro

THREES- Mens Thirds v Stirling Rangers 1 – Nil
Well game 4 and finally a home game and we were expecting it to be a tuff game and the Rangers certainly delivered. The game started at a furious pace and it wasn”t long before the substitution was made when Phill Parkes scored a hockey stick into the throat. Score Nil all however, that did not last long with some great team work with Danny in the back line through Parkes then Rusty and finally goal of the stick of Phil Hewton score 1 – Nil. The pace of game was still frenetic although the legs of both teams were easing so, Rusy decided to take to flying with a the help of a stray hand in his back.
After half time we were all expecting the game to slow down but it certainly wasn’t the case, in fact it went up a gear much to the credit of the Rangers. Rangers kept on testing the defence of the Three’s over and over again with some great clearance from Noel. At one stage the ball was only a matter of inches from the goal line however with some great defence from Dixie and Ian the ball was denied the opportunity. A great effort from a hard fought game. Carn the Thirds big game this week against Whitfords.
BOG: Rusty, Ian, Danny, Noel

Phil Parkes.

FOURS- 7-1 WIN against Dale.
Best Players: Rhys Keane, Alex Bunting, Ben Reeves, Troy Cornish
Goals: 2: Rhys, 1: Ben Reeves, Alex Bunting, Glenn Walker, John Trent, Troy Cornish.
Good solid win for the boys, against the spiritual arch-enemy. A good confidence booster, showing what we are capable of as a team. Excellent start to the game going 1 – 0 up in the first minute, thanks to a wonderful strike by Rhys. Unfortunately, two minutes later with our defence caught asleep, it was 1 all in the blink of an eye. We controlled the rest of the first half, with many shots on goal and Rhys scoring his second just before the end. 2 – 1 at half time. Having wasted many opportunities, short corners and with a sense of injustice in the score line, we started the second half as the first scoring through Alex in the first minute. From then on we dominated possession and looked every bit the finals contending side that we should. The goals came more freely as we started to go more direct and put the chances away. Great goals from Glenn, Ben Reeves, Troy and John Trent rounded out a good team effort with six different goal scorers. Great to see KO playing well on the left wing, and Ben Armstrong doing well on the right post. Thanks to John Trent from the Vets and Gibbo off the bench. Over-all a good rewarding team effort, striking fear in the SR3 camp ahead of the Round 6 DERBY in a couple of weeks.

Troy Cornish.

THE HAWKS OWN DERBY !!

Yes that’s right , we have our very own DERBY coming up next week when our threes and fours meet at home at 3.30pm.
The banter has already started as to which team is the better. The club has struck a trophy for the match and we intend to make this an annual challenge no matter which grade the teams are playing in. We are open for suggestions a to the naming of the match and to give you an idea one that comes to mind is: NAPA Challenge Match.
What is NAPA- Not A Players A….hole
Please submit our suggestions to me at vicjan1201@bigpond.com

Hawks Lose Top Spot

May 9th, 2008 by Jonathon Lanzon

Hawks Under Pressure

This week the top of the ladder first men’s side from Southern River took on bottom of the ladder West Side Wolves. All conditions showed a should be easy win for the travelling Hawks. However the extended trip to Hale’s turf in the evening of Saturday night didn’t end the predicted result.

The game started with the Hawks looking for an early goal. Some great work from the mid field saw some close opportunities for the Hawks. The Hawks were even awarded two short corners. However the Hawks were unable to convert.

By half way through the first half the momentum of the game changed and all of a sudden the Wolves has the upper hand. Some quality defensive work from the Hawks saw the frequent attacks stopped in their tracks. Unfortunately just before the end of the first half the Wolves took advantage of a defensive error converting and putting them in the lead at the half way point.

The Hawks, after regrouping, took advantage of the second half by dominating early. The persistence payed off when a quality ball from James Gradison at the 25 yard line through to Jonathon Lanzon running into the D saw Hawks equalise through a one touch from Jonathon.

The Hawks’ celebration was unfortunately short lived when the Wolves converted soon after putting themselves back into the lead. Unfortunately the damage had been done and the Wolves, with the new spout of confidence, were able to convert for a third time finishing the game 3-1 over the Hawks.

The Hawks now being pushed down to third position have a tough game against top spot Riverside Lions at the Perth Hockey Stadium on Sunday night. It will be a game that the Hawks will want to win in order to regain the top spot.
