HAWK EYE
Southern River Hockey Club Vol.3 Ed 1
Welcome to 2008
Well the 2008 hockey season is upon us and the games have begun. This year we welcome many new faces to the club and hope that you all enjoy your hockey with the Hawks as much as we enjoy having you part of our club. Welcome back to all the familiar faces from our first two years and its great to see you all back to carry the flag for us. The growth this year has been outstanding and we have achieved a remarkable milestone recently with the signing of our 100th member during the preseason. In fact Im told on good authority (Heathy !!) that we have passed the 140 mark. Well done to all.
HAWKS WIN BYRNE & JUDGE TROPHY
The Southern River Hockey Club has won the Byrne & Judge Trophy awarded by Hockey WA to the club with the highest points per capita head of players for the 2007 season. All Perth based hockey clubs are eligible to win the award including Classic League clubs. This outstanding achievement by the Hawks in only its second year of existence further enhances the decision to form a club in the Southern River region. Since its inception in 2006, the club has won two premierships, established a player base of over 100 members including senior men and women and junior age groups and have gained a reputation for professionalism both on and off the field. The Byrne & Judge Trophy caps off a remarkable 2007 season which saw the inaugural Womens team win the premiership and all other sides prove the Hawks will be power in the association for a long time.
The Pre Season !!
The 2008 pre season started way back on Feb 1 with the Myalup training camp in the southwest. What a fantastic way to start the New Year in a new environment as this year we stayed at the Indian Ocean Retreat and it was truly 5 star luxury compared with previous accommodation. The camp was attended by nearly 30 members and the group had a great time familiarising themselves with TV’s, DVD players, for some a double bed (Lloyd ) and for some others A SPA !!!!
Just ask Daniel Keane and his motley crew how they enjoyed the luxury of a bubbly spa. All reports say the boys had a splashing good time. Hope they weren’t naked !!
As the camp was about fitness we had the traditional run. Thanks to Geoff Daniels for travelling down on the Saturday to inspire us !! The run this year took a different tack as we were already at the beach. We “ran” to the crossroad of the Old Coast Rd and back ( probably about 6km). It was enough to clear the cobwebs and warm up for the Tip and Run of our famous beach cricket test. This sorts the men from the boys and you certainly find out who has co ordination when you see 26 rippling athletes floundering around in the sand. The beach was at its pristine best and the water was a welcome natural relief for the aching muscles (and a discreet way of disposing of excess fluids consumed from a glass bottle of amber fluid). Some great sights are to be had at Myalup Beach and the sunset on the Saturday evening was truly nature at its best. However for all of us in attendance the setting sun was outdone by the sight of one Troy Cornish trying to smuggle budgies into the country and his hiding place was obvious to all. Even the locals had to vacate the area as Troy paraded his contraband to the world. I could go on about the weekend but it would fill this newsletter. Please visit the website at www.southernriverhockey.asn.au to see the photographic summary of the weekend. Thanks to John Gradisen for the pics. A final word or two on Myalup. I had a phone call on the Monday morning from the owners of the resort congratulating us on our behaviour and complimenting us on the cleanliness on our departure. Not only have they invited us back next year they have discounted us by 10%. Well done to all. We were a credit to the Southern River Hockey Club.
Preseason didn’t end at Myalup and for us who hauled ourselves out of bed for the next 10 Sunday mornings to huff and puff our way around Sutherlands park, we thank John Heath, Barry Vanderputt and Janson Hoskins for co ordinating the program.

MATCH REPORTS
Mens 1: Southern River 3 V Melville 0
A good start 2008 with 4 new players in the team – Dean Savage-Morton, Peter Walker, Brad Kneebone & Paul Bailey
Hawks up against a young Melville side.
After being under pressure 1st 10 minutes, Hawks settled down & dominated the mid-field thru centre half James Gradison, & inners Lee Hansord & Daniel Keene
Opening goal Lee – continued from last years form as teams highest goal scorer
2nd goal Paul Bailey – making a come back being out of hockey for a number of years. Still showing a natural goal scoring instinct & scoring in a crowded circle from a clever pass from Peter Walker
2 nil at half time
Melville had possession of the ball for long periods in the 2nd half but could not crack a tight Hawks defense with young Dean Savage – Morton laying some sound tackles at left half & goal keeper Brad Kneebone making two good reflex saves.
Hawks slowly regained control of the game, which resulted in veteran Kevin Pethick scoring the 3rd goal from a number of precise passes in the circle.
3 nil full time
Best players – James Gradison, Lee Hansord & Steve Martino
Mens 2: Southern River 3 V Wasps 1
A great start to the season for the “twos” side. This side is very different to the side that played in the finals last year. Eight of the side’s players were made up from both new players to the club or new players to the team.We started quite well putting Wasps on the back foot but our finishing was not very good. We received five short corners in the first half but did not convert any of them but the pressure was getting to the Wasps backline. The second half saw us turning into a team rather than individuals. The passes by Clint Gavin and Gibbo were very telling and it was not long before we had scored our first goal. We faded in and out of the game at times but managed to slot another goal in before Wasps scored one through a short corner. The guys rallied hard knowing that the Wasps had a sniff of an upset. Our back line endured some good attacking moves by Wasps but we sealed the game up with two minutes to spare with our third goal.
Goal Scorers: Clinton 1, John 1,and Simon 1
Mens 3: Southern River 3 V Blades 1
Best Players – Rusty; Aaron Drane and Ian Egginton
Goal Scorer/s on Saturday led by Metro 4 – John Trent (2); Aaron Drane (1).
Mens 4: Southern River 2 V Kalamunda 3
The game was played at Hartfield Park and the Hawks were fielding a mixture of experience and youth with a couple of untried players making their debuts. Captain Troy Cornish was solid at centre half all game and Ben Armstrong was creating havoc on his wing. Chippy, in his last game for the club showed his experience and was a bonus to have him helping the younger guys. Solid play by JJ and Naveen at the back saw the Hawks repel many attacking moves. A star of the future was unearthed in Ben Armstrong and in a fine start to his hockey career scored our two goals. If the game had gone on for a couple more minutes a draw may have happened as the Kalamunda side tired and we started to have complete control. Good first up effort !! Thanks to Janson and Dave for umpiring.
Ladies 1: Southern River 3 V Dellas 1
The first game of the season saw the Hawks take on Dellas. After losing 6 players from last years Premiership side and with 6 new players to the club in the side, the girls did well. The final scoreline was 3-1. Three of the girls have NEVER played hockey before and today got a taste for the competition that’s ahead. Candice Airey, Tilly Vanderputt and Jess Heath from our juniors played well with Jess scoring a goal. Other outstanding players were Tash the goalie and Lou Spears at full back. Well done girls !!. Thanks to John Heath for umpiring.
Vets 1-Won on forfeit from Old Guildford !!!
Junior Short Passes
The Junior competition gets under way on May 3rd with Southern River fielding teams in u/11(2), u/13 and u/15. Unfortunately we had to withdraw our u/17 team due to lack of numbers. These players will be integrated into senior teams so they will not miss out. The big news this year for the u/11 and u/13 is that every second week we will host ALL games in these grades at home. A very big mention to Cindy Heath, Kevin Pethick, John Heath and Fred Keane for lobbying the association and presenting a sound case for our grounds and facilities. A canteen will be operational at these games and parent help and volunteers WILL be required. A roster will be drawn up and your co operation will be much appreciated.
