Hawks to Defend Title

With the 2008 Hockey season rapidly approaching the Southern River Hockey Club Women’s team will be striving to achieve back to back premierships following on from their inaugural successs last year. Coach Alahna Ansett is recuiting new players to complement their line up for this season and has invited any prospective new players to come to the club to enhance her already strong team. Training for the ladies is under way at Sutherlands Park in Gosnells on Thursdays at 6.30pm and pre season is a structured mixture of fitness and ball skills and runs for about an hour and a half. Alahna has played 1st grade hockey in New Zealand and was an integral part of the Hawks Grand Final team last year and has a wealth of knowledge of the finer points of hockey. For further information please call Alahna on 0437154017.
The Hawks senior Mens training is setting new standards in attendance and Coach Barry Vanderputt is wrapt at the growing number of members at training and is particularly impressed with the high number of quality new players. In what is shaping up as a record breaking season, the Hawks are in a fortunate position of possibly nominating a further team in the competition due to the high standard of the new members attending training. As the season rapidly approaches Vanderputt and his selection committee are excited at the prospective of having so many players to chose from. There is still room for any new players wishing to join the club and training is being held on Thursdays at 6.30pm and Sundays at 9.00am at Sutherlands Park, Gay Street Gosnells.
In further exciting news, HockeyWA has allocated the Hawks home ground for junior games this season in a continuation of the centralised venue program. This in effect means that under 13’s and under 11’s will play every second week at home and that the club will play host to all other clubs in the grade at that time. This is a major achievement for hockey in the district and further illustrates the rapid development of the Southern River Hockey Club and shows the respect the club is gaining from the hockey fraternity in WA.
