HAWKS TRAINING UNDERWAY
The Southern River Hockey Club has begun pre season training in earnest in preparation for the upcoming 2008 season. All players are currently training at Sutherlands Park, Gay St Gosnells at 6,30pm on Thursdays and 9.00 am Sundays. Early numbers indicate the Hawks are in for another successful season with a number of new faces attending. Training is open to all senior members both male and female and any new members are more than welcome to attend. Senior men’s coach Barry Vanderputt is conducting the training sessions and the fitness work is under the control of John Heath.
The Registration Day on Saturday the 16th February was an outstanding success with many new members signing up as well as most of last year’s players continuing this year. Vacancies still exist in all teams both senior and junior and by all indications teams will be increased again this year, further continuing the outstanding growth achieved by the club in its short existence.
The club has arranged the annual pre season series of practice matches against Capel Hockey Club for the weekend of March 16th. Games will commence at 2.00pm on the astro turf at Busselton Hockey Stadium. The clubs coaches and selection committees view theses matches as an integral indication as to team make up for the initial series of matches in the 2008 season. It is therefore very important for players both new and past to attend and push for selection in the highest grade they wish to participate.
Junior coaches and training times will be announced shortly and with the increased numbers already this year we are looking to field junior teams in all grades from the “Hook Into Hockey” program through to under 17,s.
The club is also embarking on a vigorous recruitment drive through the local schools and shopping centres. This will further enhance the exposure of the Hawks in the area and present both senior and juniors with opportunity to play hockey locally.

Hawks Announce Coaches
The Southern River Hockey Club is pleased to announce the senior coaches for season 2008. Barry Vanderputt will continue as senior men’s coach and the club is please to announce the senior ladies coach for the year will be Alahna Ansett. Both coaches are widely acknowledged in their field as being innovative and highly motivated by success. Vanderputt has a wealth of coaching experience over many years of hockey and was instrumental in the rapid development of the young Hawks club last year. Three out of four mens teams qualifyed for finals action with one side making it to the Grand Final and narrowly missing successive premierships.
Ansett was a member of the all conquering inaugural Ladies Hawks team last year and is highly respected for her goal scoring ability and shows tremendous leadership capabilities. She had tremendous input to the teams success last year and has committed to build on that in 2008.
The Hawks are conducting a Registration Day for both senior and junior players on February 16th at the Les Sands Pavilion in Gay St Gosnells commencing at 11.00am and concluding at 2.00pm. This is an important date as it allows past players to sign up for the coming year and presents an opportunity for prospective new members to join this exciting successful club and to meet the club coaches. Committee members will be on hand to assist and to showcase the excellent facilities available to members both playing and non playing. A sausage sizzle and refreshments will be available.
Junior co ordinators Cindy Heath and Fred Keane will be available to welcome junior players for 2008.
The Hawks have just returned from a highly successful pre season camp at Myalup in the South West and was attended by over 25 members. The weekend was an opportunity to begin the fitness program designed to shed some unwanted kilos and to prepare for the new season beginning in April. The camp was run with fun in mind and the road running was complimented with beach volleyball and cricket as well as swimming and sand dune exercises. The camp also is instrumental in team building and bonding of players and was the first time the club had stayed at the Indian Ocean Retreat.
Training for all senior members is under way at 9.00am Sundays and 6.30pm Thursdays at Les Sands Pavilion Gay St Gosnells.
