Hawks Win Byrne & Judge Trophy

January 14th, 2008 by Janson Hoskins

HAWKS WIN BYRNE & JUDGE TROPHY

The Southern River Hockey Club has won the Byrne & Judge Trophy awarded by Hockey WA to the club with the highest points per capita head of players for the 2007 season. All Perth based hockey clubs are eligible to win the award including Classic League clubs. This outstanding achievement by the Hawks in only its second year of existence further enhances the decision to form a club in the Southern River region. Since its inception in 2006, the club has won two premierships, established a player base of over 70 members including senior men and women and junior age groups and have gained a reputation for professionalism both on and off the field. The Byrne & Judge Trophy caps off a remarkable 2007 season which saw the inaugural Womens team win the premiership and all other sides prove the Hawks will be power in the association for a long time.

With Xmas over and a new year beginning its time to start thinking about removing some of that excess cheer gained over the festive season. The Southern River Hawks have a arranged a pre season traing camp at Myalup for the weekend of February 1st. The camp will be held at Myalup beach this year at the Indian Ocean retreat. The fitness program will include running, beach volleyball and cricket. It also serves as bonding session as players return from the holiday season. The camp will be run by fitness guru Geoff Daniels and co ordinated by Janson Hoskins and John Heath. All players who have registered to attend must contact Janson Hoskins on 0414890753 prior to the weekend to confirm attendance. Any prospective members may also call to express interest.

The club will be holding a registration day at the Les Sands Pavilion on Gay Street Gosnells on Saturday 16 February commencing at 11.00am followed by a sausage sizzle. Registration day is open to both seniors and juniors and is a chance for new players to observe the workings of the successful Hawks as well as past players to sign on for the upcoming season. The club is seeking to further grow its teams for 2008 and have plans to field more teams in the junior competetion as well as possibly another womens team.

Interested new members should phone Club President Lloyd Jones on 93234454 or Janson Hoskins on 0414890753 for further information on the Southern River Hockey Club.

Hawks Win Premiership

January 10th, 2008 by Janson Hoskins

HAWKS WIN PREMIERSHIP

The Southern River Hawks Hockey Club has won their second club premiership in as many seasons with the Womens Senior Team capping off a fantastic season with a resounding victory in the 2007 Grand Final. The team has been the trendsetters in the competition all season by winning the Mid Season Challenge Cup and the minor premiership.

The Grand Final was played at Richardson Park in South Perth in warm conditions in front of a huge crowd of supporters from both the Hawks and WASPS. The game started nervously for both groups and it took a while before the Hawks found their rhythm and started to mount dangerous forays into the Wasps goal circle. It was only a matter of time before the all conquering forwards found the back of the net with team leading goalscorer Alana Ansett slotting home the first of the afternoon. Some strong midfield work from Pip Parris and Jenny Parker gave the Hawks an abundance of drive and with the lurking Megan Vince scoring a hat trick the Grand Final became an exhibition. Strong defence from Gail Cracknell and Louise Spear combined with sound goal keeping from Natasha kept South Perth down to one goal. By then the game was as good as over and the Hawks continued to dominate with Miranda Pass and Paula still running strongly as the final whistle sounded and the jubilant Hawks team was awarded the 2007 Premiership flag.

The win further enhances the decision to bring hockey back to the Southern River region with two premierships in the two years of the clubs existence. This coupled with the fact that the men’s 2’s side made the Grand Final for the second year in a row but unfortunately fell agonisingly close to its second Premiership when their opponents Westside Wolves, scored a “golden goal” with seconds left in extra time. Barry Romaro led this team brilliantly all year and they were unlucky to be denied.

The Hawks development in its second year can be measured by the increase in teams from its inaugural season. This year the club fielded an extra senior men’s team, the Premier Women’s team and two extra junior teams bringing the club’s representation to a total of nine teams. This compared with the five teams in 2006.

The future of hockey in the area looks strong and plans are already under way for improved training facilities next year with a view to further increasing membership particularly in the junior grades.
Club President Lloyd Jones and his committee have already commenced plans for 2008 and with the pre season commencing in February with the annual Myalup camp, the future looks secure.
