Hawks Fight Hard in Finals
Jonathon Lanzon
With what was the Southern River Hockey club’s second season the Hawks had a strong coverage with three out of their four senior teams participating in the weekend final matches.
The first game saw the number one men’s side, who finished third, take on fourth placed Riverside Lions. Even though the Hawks had never lost against the Lions they were down some key players with Carl Vanderputt overseas and Gavin Mclarren out with a knee injury from the previous game. Thanks go to young Connor Cracknell who made himself available helping out the team with a much needed bench.
The game was a delight for the Hawks spectators with the Hawks dominating the first half. However the Hawks fell short where it counted, on the score line. After a strong first half the game was still 0-0. The second half started out the same with the Hawks quick to dominate. It didn’t take long until the Lions got their chance and with 15 minutes remaining they were awarded a much needed goal after a scramble from a short corner. Unfortunately no matter how hard the Hawks fought they were unable to convert an equaliser going down 1-0 in the first elimination final.
It was a good season for the Hawks’ Provisional 2 Gold side with the team only going down five matches shared among the top two sides. Top goal scorer for the team (and the entire competition) went to Lee Hansord with 14 goals, followed by Jonathon Lanzon with 6 goals, and Guy Hoskin with 5.
Other results on the weekend saw the number two men’s side, who finished second, lose against top placed Westside Woves 3-5. The team fought hard competing against an unbeatable force with goals going to Barry Romaro, Troy Cornish, and Ryan Vanderputt. The next opportunity the team will have against the Wolves will be in the grand final as long as the Hawks win their final next week at 1:30pm against UWA.
The last final game was seen with the minor premiers and Challenge Cup winning Women’s team taking on second positioned South Perth. The Women’s side had gone through the entire season without losing a game and unfortunately they met their match with an expected turn of events as the game drew and the Hawks going down in penalties. It was a magnificent season for the inaugural Women’s side with Alahna Anset top goal scoring for the club and the Metro 2 Gold competition. The Women side get another chance to bring home the flag taking on Old Aquinians at 1:30pm this Saturday.
