The Southern River Hockey Club’s mens top side played against Aquinas on Sunday at Shenton Turf
After a patchy first half it was one all with both sides having plenty of control at differing stages of the game.
After a regroup at half time the Hawks came out to play and found the rhythm that they established over the previous two games. The Hawks opened up the field by playing the ball more consistently around our own backs to use the entire field to our advantage and get the Reds doing a lot of running to cover space. With persistent attacks the Reds defence eventually opened up and the Hawks had a two one lead. Whist the Reds had the occasional counter attack the second half saw the Hawks with the fast majority of possession and with patience paying off, the side slid another two goals through the Reds overworked defence.
It was an even goal spread with Nathan Messer, Lea Hansard, Guy Hoskin and Steve Martino all getting on the score sheet.
Again the Hawks have some momentum up and are looking forward to the challenge of playing the top two sides in the coming weeks

Saturday 7th July saw the Hawks Vets travel to Newman College to tackle the second placed team in the competition. Due to a couple of unforeseen circumstance the team took to the field with ten fit players and Janson Hoskins on one leg due to a knee injury.
The game started and immediately the Hawks were on the attack. Some constructive midfield work by Barry Vanderputt and John Heath saw the ball deep in Newmans defensive area when a free sideline hit from Paul Dixie found the dangerous John Trent in the circle, the teams leading goal scorer calmly slotted the ball to put the Hawks 1-0 up within the opening few minutes. This sparked the Newman team and they attacked ferociously but some outstanding defensive work from fullbacks Len Davies and Peter Cupitt kept them at bay. Dave Vanderputt was impassable in goals and some fine saves frustrated the Newman forwards The half time score line was 1-0 and the Hawks were sensing an upset.

For the Hawks’ Provisional 2 Men’s team this week’s game was a must win. The team had gone three consecutive games without a win, allowing fourth position room to close in. With a line up against fifth position Old Guildford the Hawks were easy favourites.
To Coach Barry Vanderputt’s delight all players arrived early and eager on a cold Sunday evening at the Melville Turf. After some major changes in the last few weeks this game was not much different with Gavin McLarren and Nathan Messer back in to replace John Heath and Barry Vanderputt. While James Gradisen was in the side to replace Steve Martino who was unavailable.

This week the Hawks’ number one men’s team were matched up against Riverside Lions on an unsettled Saturday afternoon at UWA. The Hawks were coming from a two week losing streak against a team they have beaten twice previously. The odds were in their favour.
Like the Hawks’ losing streak, they have also had multiple team line-up changes in the previous two games. This week was no different with Simon Gillespie back from injury, Leighton Keane available again, and Coach Barry Vanderputt putting his mouth guard in to help the team out after Steven DeWind and Nathan Messer were both unavailable. This is on top of Center Midfield Gavin McLarren still being out.
