Southern River’s top Men’s Team had a hard battle to get victory over Old Guildford over the weekend. Last week we saw the Hawks easily beat Riverside, however this week it was a different story. Statistically you would assume the Hawks would win however not without breaking a strong defence, and this is exactly what happened.
This week’s game was on Saturday night at the Melville Turf. Although the weather was calm there were worrying moments when the team’s captain eventually turned up to the right venue after being redirected by a Shenton Turf ground controller for being at the wrong place.
Crisis over the Hawks were pumped and ready for battle. Once again Captain Lee Hansord proved his worth winning the toss and electing to start with the ball. The whistle blew and the Hawks were quick to attack with the midfield controlling the ball creating multiple attacking opportunities. However Old Guildford weren’t going anywhere as they too increased the pressure testing the Hawks’ strong defence. Luckily Rob DeWind and Leighton Keane were tuned in eliminating the need for keeper Brett Chappells to touch the ball in the first half.
By the end of the half the game was still a draw; 0-0. The next half started, this time with Old Guildford stepping up the fight. There were many close calls that would have surly seen the Hawks trailing if it wasn’t for Brett’s coverage in the goals. The close calls continued when a Hawks defensive Short Corner saw Old Guildford being awarded a Penalty Stroke after the first Short Corner shot was blocked by Leighton’s knee. Thanks to Fate (as Leighton’s knee is higher than the backboard) Brett made an awkward save keeping the Hawks in the game.
The close downfall to the Hawks saw a change of direction as the Hawks turned up the heat dominating in all directions of the field. The Hawks were finally awarded a goal after Leighton took the most of an attacking Short Corner (and the help from the Guildford defence) slotting the ball behind the line on his first shot. The goals didn’t stop there when once again the Hawks were awarded a attacking Short Corner, this time Lee making a perfect strike hitting the back board hard on an angled shot.
Two goals up and the Hawks didn’t have much time to relax before the final whistle blew. Game over, the Hawks win again! The Hawks keep their winning form beating Old Guildford 2-0 ensuring their position in the top three.
Next week the Hawks get a well deserved rest due to a general bye. However keep your diary open for Sunday the 10th when the Hawks take on Old Aquinians for the second time in the season.

The top Men’s Southern River Hockey team celebrated their third consecutive win over the weekend beating Riverside Lions late Sunday night on the Shenton Turf.
The pre-game warm up was tense being a cold night. The Hawks were determined to not be the first team Riverside take three points away for their season. Goal Keeper Brett Chappells had his own target to not be the first keeper to let a goal go through against Riverside.
Once again captain (and top goal scorer for the club) Lee Hansord won the toss electing to take the ball first on the hit out. The confidence started with the whistle as the Hawks were quick to dominate at the start. They passed the ball well around the mid field creating many chances in attack. It didn’t take long until the Hawks were awarded their first Penalty Corner which gave Lee his first goal for the night after a lucky deflection off the opposition keeper. The Hawks were now in the lead.
One goal up and the Hawks were hungry for more goals. The Hawks continued to dominate in the mid field and the attacking 25 creating multiple scorering opportunities. The second goal came off another short corner this time Jonathon Lanzon was ready on the far post to deflect a raised shot safely into the net.
The Hawks started the second half with a 2-0 lead and the skill to add more to the tally. The second half was full of more scoring opportunities for the Hawks however they could only manage to get one more goal off a beautiful long range shot angled from the top of the Penalty Circle by Simon Gillespie.
Credit for the Hawks 3-0 win needs to go to the dedication of the Half Backs and especially Full Backs Leighton Keane and Robert De Wind. Their hard work in defence meant Brett was rarely tested.
The Hawks next game is on Saturday night at 7:00pm against Old Guildford at the Melville Turf. Old Guildford is breathing down the Hawks’ back in 4th position so it will be an interesting game.
