Pingelley Carnival

March 26th, 2007 by Janson Hoskins

The Pingelly Carnival on March 31st is drawing near.

The first games will be at 11am carrying on through the day, those of you who have confirmed attendance will need to be at the grounds on the corner of Somerset Street and Brown Street, Pingelly by 10.30am AT THE LATEST. For those of who have not previously attended a Pingelly Carnival, allow 2¼ hours from Perth CBD and adjust from there according to where you live.

The best route is to travel the Brookton Highway from Armadale to Brookton, then turn right at Brookton to go to Pingelly. When you get to Pingelly, you will find the road veers right up the main street. Don’t go up the main street, but go straight ahead to the next corner (Esplanade Hotel is a landmark) and turn left over the railway line and go up Brown Street to Somerset Street, turn left into Somerset, and the entrance to the grounds is on your right. In to the entrance and then turn left to the pavilion

You may wish to travel down on Saturday morning, and returning on Sunday morning after enjoying the hospitality of the wonderful folk in Pingelly. If anyone wishes to stay overnight on Saturday, or indeed go down Friday night, please let Lloyd know and he will arrange accommodation for you. Please do not arrange accommodation individually. Arrangements are underway with the Pingelly Hotel for bed and breakfast at $30.00 per person (not bad eh?).

So that Lloyd has definite numbers, can you all please advise him by 27 March confirming your attendance, and where applicable, advise your accommodation needs.

The Pingelly trip follows close on the heels of our successful trip on 17/18 March to Busselton to play a series of games against Capel. The Pingelly Carnival is essentially aimed at veterans hockey players (35 and over) however around 25% of players who participate are younger. This is mainly a fun weekend so no matter what age come along and enjoy the outing and the rural setting at Pingelly.

Lloyd can be contacted either by phone on 93234454 or via email at lloyde19@bigpond.com.

You will also catch him at training on Thursday 6.30pm Les Sands Pavilion Gay St Gosnells.

Hawks Announce Coach

March 22nd, 2007 by Janson Hoskins

Barry Vanderputt

The Southern River Hockey Club takes great pleasure in announcing that the senior coach for season 2007 is Barry Vanderputt. Barry has an extensive and thorough knowledge of all facets of hockey and was a member of the successful premiership side from last year. Barry has coached at all levels of the game and has also represented Western Australia at junior level. He brings a wealth of experience and respect to the club and has succeeded in senior coaching positions for many years. The hockey fraternity in WA hold the Vanderputt name in the highest regard and Barry has earnt the utmost respect from all of his peers.

Barry succeeds Leighton Keane in the coaching role due to Leighton’s involvement with the current State U/18 side and we wish him all the best and thank him for his efforts from last year.

Barry will be assisted this year by a coaching panel including John Heath and Guy Hoskin as well as fitness advisor Geoff Daniels.

Training for both senior men and women is well and truly underway and is held at Les Sands Pavilion in the Sutherlands Sporting Complex Gay Street Gosnells on Thursdays 6.30pm and Sundays commencing at 9.00am. Junior training is scheduled to start very shortly with an announcement of the successful coaching staff being made in the coming week.

The Hawks recently travelled to Busselton to partake in a series of pre selection trials against local side Capel and the results were very encouraging. An impressive display by a number of the new members to our club was a feature as well as the early good form of our established stars. The solid pre season fitness campaign was evident as all players ran out the games well in hot and trying conditions.

The club will be holding an open day on April 14 commencing at 2.00pm with a series of training demonstrations and exhibition matches followed by a sausage sizzle. This is the perfect opportunity for the local community to attend and view the magnificent facilities of the Les Sands Pavilion as well as the manicured playing surface of the Hawks home ground. Coaches and committee members will be on hand to assist with information on the club. Social memberships are available and offer a wide range of exciting benefits. Local dignitaries will be in attendance including our club patron Paul Andrews MLA.

For further information on any aspect of the Southern River Hockey club please contact Lloyd Jones on 93234454 of Janson Hoskins on 0414890753.

Nomination Successful

March 3rd, 2007 by Janson Hoskins

The Southern River Hockey Club is pleased to announce that the proposal to field a women’s side in the HockeyWA grass competition this year has been passed by Committee and will go ahead for the upcoming season.

If you live in the local area and are interested in joining our family friendly innovative club then the Hawks are for you. The team will participate in the HockeyWA regular home and away season which runs from April until September.

Training is already under way and is held on Thursdays at 6.30pm and Sunday mornings at 9.00am at the Les Sands Pavilion located in the Sutherlands Park complex in Gay Street Gosnells. Currently the team is joining in training with the senior mens teams and the fitness and skills program is very successful. A coach will be announced in the very near future.

As well as the womens side the Hawks are also increasing the number of mens teams this season to include another grass side bringing the number of teams to four including a State 3C side in the astroturf competition and a Veterans team for the over 40’s. Junior training is scheduled to commence towards the end of March and we again will field sides in ages ranging from u/11 through to u/15.

The Hawks are proud to be associated with the “Hook Into Hockey” program being run by HockeyWA for local schools and have committed to run the program for our local area.

The club has organised a trip to Busselton for the weekend of 17th March for the traditional series of pre season matches against Capel. Numbers are limited and this is a perfect opportunity for players to impress the selection panel prior to the season commencing in April.

For further information on the Southern River Hockey Club please phone Janson Hoskins on 0414890753 or Lloyd Jones on 93234454 or see it here on our website.
