The Southern River Hockey Club moved pre-season training up a gear this week with the introduction of a skills program with a focus on stick work and ball control. Training numbers are extremely encouraging and the Hawks are ecstatic with the high number of new members. Fitness coordinator Geoff Daniels in partnership with skills coach John Heath have developed a balanced training regime that has all players impressed and training is performed with enthusiasm and enjoyment.
Training for senior men and women is currently being conducted on Sunday mornings at 9.00am and Thursday evenings commencing at 6.30pm at Sutherlands Park Gay Street Gosnells. The club is committed to fielding senior sides in both synthetic turf and grass competitions this year and vacancies exist in all grades. The numbers for the women’s team have been particularly pleasing and a coach will be announced shortly. Junior teams will range from u/11 through to u/17 and training will commence shortly.
The Registration Day on Saturday 17 February was an outstanding success and follow up registrations will be conducted at 6.00pm Thursday 1 March at Les Sands Pavilion on Gay Street Gosnells.

The Southern River Hockey Club has kicked off pre season training in style with a two day fitness camp at Myalup in the South West. The camp was coordinated by John Heath with the assistance of fitness advisor Geoff Daniels. The traditional 12 kilometre run was the focus of the weekend and good results were achieved given the early stage of the season. Strong work in the soft sand at the beach also proved beneficial and the cricket and volleyball exercises proved popular as the players had enjoyment and fun as well as developing leg strength. The camp was not all hard slog and all participants appreciated the opportunity to relax and socialise with team mates and newcomers. The popularity of the camp has guaranteed that it will now become a permanent fixture on our training calendar in the future.
Training has now officially commenced at Sutherlands Park with the co operation of the Gosnells Cricket Club and is held at 6:30pm on Thursdays and 9:00am on Sundays until further notice. We have been fortunate to engage the services of fitness advisor Geoff Daniels to prepare a balanced exercise regime in the lead up to the season and this coupled with the early introduction of skills training should ensure a perfect lead up to the start of the season in April.
Interested new players are encouraged to attend the training sessions as we are nominating teams in several high senior men’s grades including astro turf and grass competition and are continuing to provide the opportunity for veterans players with the fielding of an over 40 grade. We are also intending to fill sides in all junior grades ranging from u/11 through to u/17. A new innovation this year will be the introduction of a women’s side and early indications are that this will be well received as response has been encouraging.
The Hawks are conducting a combined senior /junior registration day at Les Sands Pavilion in Gay Street Gosnells on Saturday 17th February commencing at 11:00am. This is a perfect opportunity to observe the excellent facilities at Sutherlands Park as well as registering your interest for the upcoming season. Junior and Senior coaches as well as committee members will be on hand to provide information on the club. A sausage sizzle will follow. An announcement on junior/women’s training will be made following the registration day.
